1 BIMBIA VILLAGE An alarming increase in malaria in Cameroon s southwestern coastal area Drive Against Malaria focuses on malaria prevention in this area through the distribution of LLITNs, ACTs and diagnostic support (Version: Dutch & English) Edited by: Stephen Johnston Bimbia Village is situated in Cameroon s mountainous southwestern coastal area in the Limbe Healthcare Area and has over 4,000 inhabitants. Despite an explosive increase in malaria during the past two years (2007 WHO report), the village had no LLITNs, ACTs or diagnostic material. Empty Health Centre in Bimbia

2 This mountain village s Health Care Centre was empty when we arrived, even though health care here is essential for surrounding villages, especially during the rainy season, when inhabitants are unable to reach the hospital in Limbe. The Mayor of Bimbia has promised to map the mountain range area, including the number of inhabitants, to give us a clearer picture of exactly what is going on. DAM s Julia Samuel makes malaria prevention plans with the mayor This clearer outlook will make it much easier to help over 30 different tribes in the area. Much is needed. A malaria expert is required to train local nurses, and council assistant nurses cost approximately 45 to 50 thousand CFA (about 50 Euros) per month. However, Bimbia is eager to use DAM s expertise. The Mayor is already proving to be a staunch supporter of the fight against malaria, and has promised to provide housing for nursing personnel. The first priorities for the Health Care Centre are scales for adults and babies, beds, diagnostic material, KTab 123, LLITNs, ACTs, and sterilisation equipment.

3 DAM s David Robertson and the local GlocalGaz unite in the fight against malaria. Plans Many plans are now underway in this region. Obviously, a well-functioning Health Care Centre is crucial in the struggle against malaria, and it will stay under Drive Against Malaria s care. DAM will increase the number of nets provided to the community, organize monitoring and continuous education at the only local school, as well as malaria diagnosis for the community and an ACT program. DAM has also been offered ground to build storage space. Dancing and singing with the whole community

4 DAM together with the Mayor, GlogalGaz and the Junior Chamber at the proposed storage facility location Results: DAM distribution over 3,000 LLITNs within the community; During distribution, DAM also provided an educational program about malaria prevention; The Mayor and Secretariat were provided with ACTs and supplies, including a guide for appropriate use; The Secretariat was provided with thermometers; DAM created a local partnership with the Mayor, Secretariat and GlocalGaz; DAM received national media attention.

In dit bergachtige kustgebied in zuid-west Kameroen is de afgelopen twee jaar een explosieve toename van malaria waargenomen (Bron: WHO rapport 2007). Er zijn geen LLITN s, ACT s of diagnose materiaal aanwezig. Het gebouw in dit bergdorp, dat een Health Centre zou moeten zijn, staat leeg terwijl gezondheidszorg

6 De communitie komt in groepen naar het gemeentehuis voor een net op deze locatie voor de dorpen in de wijde omgeving essentieel is. Voornamelijk tijdens het regenseizoen wanneer het ziekenhuis in Limbe voor de bewoners onbereikbaar is. Met de burgemeester van Bimbia is afgesproken het bergketengebied in kaart brengen plus het aantal inwoners. Julia overhandigd het eerste net aan de burgemeester

7 Ruim 30 verschillende stammen zouden hiermee geholpen zijn. Bimbia wil hierbij graag gebruik maken van de ervaring van DAM. Wat verplegend personeel betreft zal de burgemeester zorgen voor huisvesting. Een westerse arts is nodig om lokale verpleegsters op te leiden. De kosten van een council assistant nurse zijn 45 tot 50 duizend CFA per maand. Dat is ongeveer 50 Euro per maand. Burgemeester / Secretariaat zal tot die tijd functioneren als dienstdoend malaria hulpkracht. Eerste benodigdheden HC: Weegschaal volwassenen, weegschaal baby s, bedden, diagnose materiaal, KTab 123, LLITN s, ACT s, sterilisatie apparatuur. Ook het burgemeester secretariaat helpt mee met de distributie

8 Plannen Opzetten van een goed functionerende HC voor malaria geïnfecteerden t.b.v. het hele gebied. Malaria educatie programma voor de - enige - lokale school. Het Health Centre zal onder de hoede blijven van Drive Against Malaria met nodige uitbreiding van het aantal netten ten behoeve van de gemeenschap, monitoring, educatie herhaling, malaria diagnose voor de gemeenschap, een ACT programma, vanaf september DAM krijgt grond aangeboden om opslagruimte te bouwen. Samen sterk in het gevecht tegen malaria Resultaten: Binnen de gemeenschap heeft DAM ruim 3000 LLITNs gedistribueerd; Tijdens distributie educatie programma gegeven over malariapreventie; Burgemeester en Secretariaat voorzien van ACT s, inclusief handleiding juist gebruik, voorraad tot oktober 2008; Secretariaat voorzien van thermometers.
