1 TRC Newsletter Tentoonstelling/Exhibition Special 2013 MEER DAN DE CHADOR. Kleding uit de bergen en woestijnen van Iran Van 23 januari tot en met 30 mei 2013 presenteert het TRC een spectaculaire tentoonstelling van kleding uit Iran. De bezoekers zullen versteld staan van de grote diversiteit en de heldere kleuren van de kleding stukken, die zo'n enorm contrast vormen tot het doorsnee beeld dat men in het Westen heeft van de kleding in Iran. Het is ook een land met een ruwklimaat, met woestijnen en bergen en een grootgebrek aan water. Voorheen vooral bekend alsperzië, ligt het land op een kruispunt van wegentussen Centraal-Azië en het Midden-Oosten. Iran is het land van vele oude keizerrijken, zoalsdat van de Perzische Achemeniden, de Parthen, de Sassaniden en de Safaviden. Door de eeuwenheen zijn vele legers en volkeren door het landgetrokken, van oost naar west en van west naaroost. Sommige nieuwkomers bleven in het land,anderen trokken verder. Vandaag de dag heeftiran grenzen met Irak, Turkije, Azerbeidzjan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan en Pakistan. De ligging en gesteldheid van het land, hetklimaat en de geschiedenis van zijn bewonershebben een samenspel geschapen van oudeculturen en tradities. En hoewel sommige oude gewoontes in onze moderne tijd snel aan het verdwijnenzijn, worden vele aspecten van het traditionele Iran nog steeds teruggevonden in de kleding van deiraniërs, en vooral bij die van de vrouwen. De meeste kleding die op de tentoonstelling kan worden bewonderd dateert uit de tweede helft van denegentiende en uit de twintigste eeuw en wordt nu bewaard in de collectie van het Textile Research Centre in Leiden. De meeste kleding werd tussen 1998 en 2003 in Iran verzameld door Gillian en WillemVogelsang tijdens lange reizen door het gehele land. *****

2 NEW TRC EXHIBITION BEYOND THE CHADOR: Dress from the mountains and deserts of Iran From 23 January until 30 May 2013, the TRC presents a spectacular exhibition of clothing from Iran in itsleiden gallery. Visitors will be struck by the sheer diversity, the bright colours and multitude of shapes, which constitute such a marked contrast with the dominant perception of Iranian clothing as being dull and uniform. Iran is a country with a very ancient and proud history. It is also a country with a harsh climate, with deserts and mountains and an overall lack of water. Formerly known as Persia, it lies at the crossroads between Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Iran is also the homeland of many empires, including the Persian Achaemenids, the Parthians, the Sassanians and the Safavids. Over the centuries numerous groups crossed the country, in both directions. Some of the newcomers settled down, others moved on. Nowadays Iran shares frontiers with (clockwise) Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Two Bakhtiari women from Western Iran. Photograph: Ien Rappold, The country s geography, climate and human history have thus created a complex tapestry that reflects a wide diversity of cultures and traditions. Although rapidly vanishing in some areas due to national pressures and globalization, many aspects of these traditions can still be found in the regional dress of the country, especially that worn by women. Most of the outfits in the exhibition date from the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries and are now housed in the collection of the Textile Research Centre, Leiden. Many of the garments were collected during long periods of field work in Iran between by Gillian and Willem Vogelsang.
