9 Verstoorde sediment balans Worldwide natural sediment equilibriums are seriously obstructed by human interventions. Examples are: Damming for hydro-power production and for flood protection River training for improving navigability Water diversion for water supply and irrigation Dredging for improving navigability, for improving drainage capacity and for mining of building material (sand and gravel extraction) Dike construction for flood protection and land reclamation Figure: Mosselman (2012)

18 Bevindingen Sedimentbalans NL rivieren is verstoord: Rijn, Maas, Schelde, Eems Maar wat is de juiste balans? Dat hangt van het gewenste gebruik af! 19 Ondertussen in het buitenland Zand, zeldzamer dan je denkt Zand en grind: wereldwijd meest gewonnen delfstoffen miljard ton per jaar 2012: miljard ton aggregaten voor productie 3,7 miljard ton cement Zandverbruik China in 4 jaar > verbruik USA in 19e eeuw Sneller gewonnen dan vernieuwd Grootschalige winning: impact op rivieren, delta s, kusten en mariene ecosystemen, erosie in rivier en kust, verlaging grondwaterstand, verminderde aanvoer sediment Despite the colossal quantities of sand and gravel being used, our increasing dependence on them and the significant impact that their extraction has on the environment, this issue has been mostly ignored by policy makers and remains largely unknown by the general public.
