3 Inleiding De Filser LX20 is eigenlijk drie instrumenten tegelijk: de FAI Logger, navigatie en terminal functies hebben elk hun eigen gebruiksdoel. De FAI Logger dient als elektronische vluchtdocumentatie en kan met de juiste formulieren worden gebruikt voor brevetaanvragen en wedstrijden. Daarbij wordt zowel de barograaf als het fototoestel vervangen. Deze werkwijze is momenteel nog nieuw voor de KNVvL, zodat in deze handleiding vooralsnog wordt uitgegaan van de officiële Engelstalige Sportcode, Sectie 3 en daarin opgenomen formulieren. Voor hoogtewinst en records dient de LX20, net als een normale barograaf, te zijn geijkt. Dat is niet nodig voor de overige breveteisen. De navigatie functie kan tegelijk met de FAI Logger worden gebruikt. Daarbij is geen final glide berekening aanwezig, daar de LX20 niet de stuwdruk meet. In de LX20 kunnen drie soorten gegevens worden gebruikt: Vliegvelden (Airports, APT), Keerpunten (Turnpoints, TP) en Opdrachten (Tasks,TP). In deze handleiding worden de Engelse termen gebruikt. Een task wordt samengesteld uit een aantal turnpoints. De LX20 kan 100 tasks opslaan. Als een task ook in de FAI Logger moet worden gebruikt, dan moet deze daarvoor worden geselecteerd. De terminal functie is een soort electronische emmer. Hiermee kun je gegevens overbrengen van een PC naar een LX4000 of LX5000 door ze tijdelijk op te slaan in de LX20. Je hoeft dan dus geen laptop naar de kist te sjouwen. Verder is de LX20 voorzien van een ingebouwde accu. Deze heeft een capaciteit van slechts één uur, welke alleen is bedoeld voor het inprogrammeren van een opdracht (b.v. bij een wedstrijdbriefing) en het gebruik van de terminal functie. Voor navigatie en FAI Logger moet gebruik worden gemaakt van een externe accu. 3

4 Checklist FAI Logger Deze checklist omvat alle stappen om de LX20 voor te bereiden op het gebruik voor een brevetvlucht of wedstrijd. Stap 1: FLIGHT INFO Voer de gegevens in over de vlieger, het vliegtuig, de registratie en wedstrijdnummer, de wedstrijdklasse en de sportcommissaris. Deze gegevens kunnen ook via een PC worden ingelezen. Belangrijk: bij CLASS mogen alleen de volgende woorden (precies zo) worden ingegeven: STANDARD, 15-METER, OPEN, 18-METER, WORLD, DOUBLE, MOTOR GL. Andere teksten maken de vluchtgegevens ongeldig! Stap 2: TASK Voer de opdracht in middels de functie TASK. Deze kan worden overgenomen uit de opgeslagen tasks, of uit de opgeslagen turnpoints worden samengesteld. Kies voor MODE (rechtsboven) de waarde FS (Foto Sector). Stap 3: LOGTIME Stel in hoeveel informatie moet worden vastgelegd. Dit bepaalt de beschikbare opnametijd. Bruikbare waarden zijn 12 seconden voor B-RECORD en 4 seconden voor NEAR TP INT. Bij NEAR TP. RAD. 0,5 km selecteren (FAI vereiste). Als een K- RECORD wordt gebruikt, is daar 60 seconden aan te bevelen. Stap 4: (I)-RECORD en (L)-RECORD Met deze keuzes wordt ingesteld welke aanvullende gegevens moeten worden vastgelegd met het interval wat in LOGTIME onder K-RECORD is ingegeven. Als motor registratie moet worden vastgelegd wordt dit ingesteld door het J-RECORD te kiezen de keuze ENL op Y in te stellen (ENgine Level). Stap 5: OBSERVER ID Overhandig de LX20 aan de sportcommissaris. Deze controleert de opdracht en stelt een password in (OBSERVER ID) als de LX20 na installatie niet continu door hem of haar kan worden geobserveerd. Na de landing moet dit password weer worden ingegeven om de LX20 te kunnen uitlezen. Stap 6 Je kunt nu zonder verdere zorgen over barograaf of camera de opdracht gaan vliegen. Niet alle stappen zijn nodig. Sommige zijn aanbevolen. In onderstaande tabel is aangegeven hoe dit precies zit. Er zijn twee mogelijkheden: gebruik van het algemene programma LXFAI of de speciale programma s DATA-FIL, CONV-FIL en VALI-FIL. Het programma LXFAI bevat alle functies om bestanden te lezen, analyseren en af te drukken. Ook kunnen taken, turnpoints en opdrachtgegevens worden bewerkt. De programma s DATA-FIL, CONV-FIL en VALI-FIL voeren slechts één door de FAI bepaalde taak uit. Met DATA-FIL wordt uit een LX20 de logging van de laatste vliegdag gelezen, CONV-FIL vertaalt dit bestand van het eigen Filser formaat naar het algemene IGC formaat en met VALI-FIL kan worden vastgesteld of het bestand niet is gemanipuleerd. 4

5 De programma s draaien onder DOS. Bij gebruik van Windows dient de communicatie snelheid van de PC en de LX20 op 9600 te worden gezet, daar er anders communicatie fouten kunnen optreden. Voor een brevetaanvraag moeten bepaalde bestanden (*.FIL en *.IGC) op een diskette worden gezet en samen met de betreffende formulieren worden ingestuurd. De formulieren worden ondertekend door de sportcommissaris. Daarbij kunnen ook afdrukken worden gevoegd van de gevlogen route, barogram en keerpunten (via programma LXFAI). Formele procedure Conform de Sportcode, Sectie 3, paragraaf Zo spoedig als mogelijk na de landing zal de sportcommissaris de gegevens van de vluchtrecorder overzetten op diskette of PC. De sportcommissaris dient daarbij te controleren of de vluchtrecorder correct is verzegeld aan het vliegtuig indien deze voor de vlucht is aangebracht. De vlieger mag de sportcommissaris uitleggen hoe de gegevens kunnen worden uitgelezen, maar dient dit niet zelf uit te voeren. Er dienen minimaal twee kopieën van de vluchtgegevens te worden gemaakt, waarvan één door de sportcommissaris veilig wordt opgeslagen en de tweede aan de vlieger wordt overhandigd. De gegevens dienen absoluut ongewijzigd op de diskettes te worden overgenomen, waarbij eventuele conversie later op basis van deze originele gegevens kan plaatsvinden. Op deze wijze is het mogelijk om later zonodig de vluchtgegevens te kunnen vergelijken met het origineel op wijzigingen. Als de sportcommissaris door de KNVvL is gekwalificeerd voor analyse van de gegevens dan kan dit nu worden uitgevoerd. Zo niet, dan dient de eerste diskette aan de door de KNVvL aangewezen persoon te worden toegestuurd voor beoordeling. (Nell Dijkstra-Adriaansen). Uitvoering met het programma LXFAI Het programma zal normaal gesproken te vinden zijn in de directory \LXFAI en heet LXFAI.EXE. Vluchtgegevens worden door het programma opgeslagen in de directory \LXFAI\LOGGER. Zie de gedetailleerde handleiding hierna. 5

6 Gebruik van het LXFAI programma Uitlezen van vluchtgegevens Verbind de LX20 met de bijbehorende kabel met de communicatie poort van de computer. Start het LXFAI programma en zet de LX20 aan. Druk op de PC op de letter T om de Transfer functie te activeren. Selecteer op de LX20 het FAI LOGGER menu item en druk op de <WRITE> toets, waarna een CONNECT scherm wordt getoond. NB: voor een betrouwbaardere verbinding wordt een snelheid van 9600 bps gebruikt. WRITE Als de verbinding tot stand is gekomen, op de PC op <ENTER> drukken. Nu haalt de PC een inhoudsopgave uit de LX20 voor de daarin opgeslagen vluchten. Vluchten worden getoond van de nieuwste naar de oudste. Gebruik de <UP> en <DOWN> toetsen op de PC om vluchten aan te wijzen. Met F2 kan de betreffende vlucht worden uitgelezen. Als meerdere vluchten moeten worden uitgelezen, dan kunnen deze met de INS toets worden aangewezen (er verschijnt een + teken achter de vlucht) en dan met F2 worden opgehaald. 6

7 Nadat een vlucht is opgehaald wordt deze automatisch omgezet naar het IGC formaat. Zowel het oorspronkelijke FIL bestand als het IGC bestand worden opgeslagen. De naam van het bestand wordt volgens FAI regels automatisch als volgt aangemaakt: ymdfxxxn.fil y -laatste cijfer van het jaartal m - maand van de vlucht (A- oktober, B - november, C - december) d - dag van de vlucht ( A -10, B - 11.) F - FILSER xxx - serienummervan de LX20 n - volgnummer van de vlucht van die dag. Alle vluchten worden opgeslagen in de LOGGER directory. Zodra de gegevens zijn ingelezen kan met de <ESC> toets worden teruggegaan naar het Transfer menu. Bij problemen De CONNECT boodschap komt niet op het LX20 scherm Zorg er voor dat de apparaten op de juiste wijze zijn verbonden, en dat in het LXFAI programma (Setup menu) de juiste communicatie poort is geselecteerd (meestal 1). Data transfer Error Dit kan voorkomen als het LXFAI programma onder Windows wordt gebruikt. Kies in de programma instellingen van Windows voor exclusive mode en probeer het nogmaals. Ook 7

8 kan de communicatie snelheid lager worden ingesteld, 9600 bps. Dit moet zowel op de PC als de LX20 (SETUP/COMSPEED) gebeuren. Uitlezen turnpoint database Writing turning point database to LX20 Het is niet nodig om alle turnpoints handmatig op de LX20 in te voeren. Met de PC gaat dit eenvoudiger, waarna de gegevens worden gekopieerd naar de LX20. Daarbij kunnen ook turnpoint files van de LX4000 of LX5000 worden gebruikt. Selecteer het Transfer menu op de PC in het LXFAI programma. Kies de functie Write TP and TASK en druk op de <ENTER> toets. Een lijst van alle turnponts databases wordt getoond. Selecteer de gewenste met de <UP> en <DOWN> pijltoetsen op de PC. Selecteer op de LX20 het TP&TASK menu en druk op de <READ> toets. Een CONNECT boodschap wordt getoond. Druk nu op de PC op <ENTER> om het bestand te versturen. Lezen van de turnpoint database van de LX20. Een in de LX20 aanwezige turnpoint database kan ook worden overgezet naar de PC. Kies op de PC uit het Transfer menu de optie Read TP and Task. Druk op <ENTER> en geef een (nog niet bestaande) naam voor het in te lezen bestand. Het bestand krijgt als type.da4. De database zal worden opgeslagen in de directory LXFAI\DATA. Selecteer op de LX20 het TP & TASK menu en druk op de <WRITE> key. Druk op <ENTER> op de PC om de overdracht te starten. 8

9 De turnpoint database kan ook met andere programma s worden uitgelezen, zoals het LXGPS programma voor de LX4000 en LX5000. Overzetten vluchtgegevens Kies het Transfer menu op de PC en vervolgens Write flight info. Kies FAI LOGGER op de LX20 en druk op de <READ> toets om vluchtgegevens op de LX20 weg te schrijven. Na indrukken van <ENTER> op de PC worden de gegevens weggeschreven. Lezen van de LX20 kan ook en verloopt vergelijkbaar. De gegevens worden opgeslagen in de directory LXFAI\DATA. Vlucht informatie Zodra de vluchtgegevens zijn opgeslagen in de computern, kunnen barogram, route en andere informatie worden getoond. Kies daarvoor het Logger menu op de PC. Selecteer vervolgens het View Logger menu als een bestand in IGC formaat moet worden getoond of View Binary als een bestand in Filser formaat moet worden getoond. De laatste werkt iets sneller maar kan alleen voor LX20 bestanden worden gebruikt. Selecteer de te analyseren vlucht met de pijltoetsen en <ENTER>. Vervolgens worden algemene gegevens van de vlucht getoond. 9

10 De bovenste regel toont de bestandsnaam, de datum en de geldigheid. Als INTEGRITY IS BAD is aangegeven, dan is het bestand NIET officieel geldig. Dit kan zijn veroorzaakt doordat de LX20 is geopend geweest, een ongeldige CLASS is ingevuld, het bestand niet van een LX20 afkomstig is of het bestand is gewijzigd. Daaronder wordt informatie getoond over het GPS type, de vlieger en het vliegtuig. Onderaan wordt de opdracht getoond. Met de <F1> toets kan een helpscherm worden opgeroepen. Vlucht analyseren en afdrukken Statistiek Druk op de <F2> toets in het vlucht informatie scherm om de statistieken op te vragen. 10

11 De verschillende confirmation modes zijn: FOTO; photo sector 500m; het vliegtuig is door een cilinder van 500m rond het keerpunt gevlogen 90 o ; het vliegtuig was parallel aan het keerpunt 1km; het vliegtuig is door een cilinder van 1000m rond het keerpunt gevlogen 2km; het vliegtuig is door een cilinder van 2000m rond het keerpunt gevlogen De gewenste confirmation mode kan worden ingesteld in Setup scherm. Als de opdracht is afgebroken wordt FOTOLAND or LANDING aangetgeven. Druk op <ESC> om naar het informatiescherm terug te gaan. Route, Barogram en Foto Sector Met de <F4> toets in het informatie scherm wordt de route getoond. 11

12 Linksboven wordt de schaal aangegeven. De gevlogen route en de opdracht worden getoond en de luchtruimte structuur (mits dit in het Setup menu is aangezet). Onderin het scherm worden de verschillende opties getoond. Met <F5> kan een deel van de vlucht worden uitvergroot, er verschijnt een kruisje linksonder in het scherm. Beweeg dit met de pijltoetsen naar één van de hoeken van het uit te vergroten gebied en druk op <ENTER>. Nu kan met de pijltoetsen de uit te vergroten rechthoek worden getekend. Om de gehele route weer te zien wordt de <F6> toets gebruikt. Met <F3> wordt het barogram getoond. Zowel de GPS hoogte (geel) als de barometrische hoogte (groen) zijn zichtbaar (mits geselecteerd in het Setup menu). Indiend e GPS ontvangst niet mogelijk was, wordt dit in rood aangegeven. Bovenin het scherm zijn kleine groene driehoeken zichtbaar welke de keerpunten aangeven. Events worden aangegeven met korte blauwe lijnen. Met <F4> worden de keerpunten getoond. Elk keerpunt heeft een eigen schermdeel. Het type keerpunt, de naam, de tijd en de confirmation mode worden getoond. Een groen kruisje geeft aan welke fix is gebruikt voor de confirmatie. Met <F2>, <F3> en <F4> kan worden gewisseld tussen route, barogram en fotosector. Met <ESC> wordt teruggekeerd naar het informatie scherm. 12

14 Afdrukken Met <F3> wordt het afdrukscherm getoond Selecteer de af te drukken gegevens met de pijltoetsen. Vlucht afspelen Het naspelen van een vlucht wordt gebruikt voor gedetailleerde analyse. Dit wordt gestart met de <F7> toets in het informatiescherm. Een scherm met de route, opdracht en het vliegtuig verschijnt. Onderaan worden de verschillende mogelijkheden getoond. Rechts zijn vluchtgegevens zichtbaar. Om over de rotue te bewegen kunnen de de <F4> tot <F8> toetsen of de pijltoetsen worden gebruikt. <F7> of <rechts> om naar de volgende fix te gaan, <F8> of <PgUp> om drie minuten verder te gaan, <F6> or <links> om naar de vorige fix te gaan, <F5> of <PgDn> om drie minuten terug in de vlucht te gaan. 14

15 Dit kan met de <F4> toets ook automatisch worden getoond. Dan kan met <F2> de snelheid van naspelen worden ingesteld. Met <F3> wordt teruggesprongen naar het begin. Met <Z> kan een bepaald gedeelte worden vergroot. Om terug te gaan naar de gehele route moet na <Z> twee keer op <ENTER> worden gedrukt. Gedurende de analyse kan met <F9> worden gewisseld tussen route en barogram. Daarmee is het eenvoudig mogelijk om te controleren of bijvoorbeeld een CTR correct is gepasseerd. De gegevens aan de rechterzijde zijn verdeeld in twee secties. De bovenste geeft informatie over de huidige fix. 16 De onderste sectie geeft indormatie over een vluchtdeel. This document gives formal approval from the above date for the undermentioned GNSS FR equipment to be used for validation of flights under the FAI Sporting Code (Gliders and Motor Gliders), subject to the conditions and notes given later. IGC reserves the right to alter this approval in the future. GFAC tests are concerned primarily with data accuracy, security, data transfer, and conversion to the standard *.IGC file format. Other aspects of the equipment may not be tested and are a matter between the FR manufacturer and customers. The attention of NACs, Officials and Pilots is drawn to the latest edition of the FAI Sporting Code Section 3, including all amendments. Copies may be obtained from NACs. It is recommended that a copy of this approval including its annexes is kept with each unit of the equipment. 18 CONDITIONS OF APPROVAL: 1. Permitted Connections to the Main (FR) Module pin plug with wires to 12V external battery power, to a pilot event button, a light indicating GNSS lock-on, and NMEA signal output to appropriate instruments. 1.2 External antenna to antenna port. 1.3 PC to 4-pin circular data-transfer port. A PC must not be connected between the takeoff of the claimed flight and the transfer of data after flight V battery to the 3-pin circular port. 2. Installation and Security. GFAC is presently satisfied with the physical and electronic security of this equipment subject to Fout! Bladwijzer niet gedefinieerd. on the physical security seal. 2.1 Installation in the glider: The FR may be fitted anywhere in the glider (subject to para 4). If the antenna or antenna port is accessible to the crew in flight, no attempt must be made to inject data at these places; any abuse of this may lead to a future requirement to place the antenna and antenna port out of reach of the flight crew. 2.2 Sealing of data ports: no present requirement, but no unauthorised data must be passed into the FR during the time between takeoff and the start of the post-flight transfer of data. 2.3 Motor Gliders. The microphone system automatically produces an ENL (Engine Noise Level) value with each fix up to a maximum ENL value of Check of Installation in the Glider. Before flight, an Official Observer must check the place of the equipment in the glider concerned and how it is fixed to the glider. Following this examination; EITHER, 3.1. Continuous Observation. The glider must be under continuous observation by an OO until it takes off on the claimed flight (so that the FR cannot be transferred to another glider without this being seen); OR, 3.2. Sealing to the Glider. If para 3.1 cannot be met, the FR must be sealed to the glider by an OO at any time or date before flight so that it cannot be removed without breaking the seal. The date/time of sealing is not critical because the date/time of GPS fixes is not in doubt, every fix having its own accurate date/time. The sealing method must be acceptable to the NAC and IGC. Paper seals must be marked with the glider registration, the date, time and OO's number and signature. The use of adhesive plastic tape is not satisfactory for IGC-approved sealing because it can be peeled off and re-fitted. Gummed paper tape is recommended, as used for sealing drum-type barographs. The OO must seal the FR unit to glider parts which are part of the minimum standard for flight. It is accepted that such parts can be removed for purposes such as servicing; such parts include the canopy frame, instrument panel, and centre-section bulkhead fittings. If such a part is transferred between gliders, any FR seal for the previous glider must be removed. 4. Security Seal. The FR is sealed with adhesive security tape across the top of the case above the screen and/or across the side of the two halves of the case. If it is found to be unsealed, it must be returned to the manufacturer or his appointed agent for investigation and resealing, with a statement of how the unit became unsealed. Whenever any unit is resealed, the manufacturer or agent must carry out positive checks on the internal programme and internal wiring, and ensure that they work normally. If any evidence is found of tampering or unauthorised modification, a report must be made by the manufacturer or agent to the Chairman of GFAC and to the NAC of the owner; the IGC approval of that individual unit will be withdrawn until the unit is re- set and certified to be to the IGC-approved standard. 5 After-Flight Transfer of Flight Data - from the FR, and conversion to the *.IGC file format. Only the IGC-approved standard of software shall be used, see above under Equipment and Software. 6 Analysis of Flight Data - may be through any analysis programme which is approved by the relevant NAC including those which use the *.IGC file format. The NAC must check the *.IGC file as unaltered, by the use of a copy of the VALI-FIL.EXE file which has originated from the FR manufacturer; for how to use, see Annex B. 7 Manufacturer's Changes. Notification of any intended change to hardware, firmware or software must be made by the manufacturer to the Chairman of GFAC so that a decision can be made on any further testing which may be required. 19 Annex A to Version 2 of IGC Approval Dated 25 March 1997 NOTES FOR OWNERS AND PILOTS - PART OF IGC APPROVAL FOR FILSER LX20 GNSS FR To be read together with the main terms of approval to which this is an Annex. It is recommended that a copy of the approval document including annexes is kept with the equipment concerned, for the use of pilots and Official Observers. Pilot's Responsibility. It is the responsibility of the pilot to ensure or to note the following: A1 Antenna - That the antenna is positioned in order to give sufficient signal strength for IGC purposes. No deliberate attempt must be made to inject data via the antenna or antenna port; any abuse of this may lead to a future requirement to position antennas and the antenna port out of reach of the flight crew. Note that tests show that carbon fibre skins covering some centre-sections attenuate the 1.5 GHz GPS signal, and also that proximity to some metal fittings can also attenuate the signal. A2 Geodetic Datum. That the WGS84 Geodetic Datum is set (IGC Sporting Code rule). A3 Connection to Ports. Although this approval does not presently require sealing of any ports, no unauthorised data must be passed through any port during the time between takeoff and the start of the postflight transfer of data. See para 2.3 in the conditions of approval on page 2. A4 Use in Motor Gliders (including self-sustainers): The internal microphone and associated circuitry automatically records an ENL (Engine Noise Level) value with each fix. The ENL system is enabled by switching ENL to "Y" for yes in the I-Record screen. This screen is accessed by selecting "FAI LOGGER" and pressing Enter, 4 down strokes to access the I-Record screen, Enter. For more detail, see Annex B, para B.4. A5 After Flight - The pilot should ensure that the time and point of landing has been witnessed and recorded for comparison with that recorded by the GNSS FR. Until an OO has witnessed the FR fit (installation) to the glider, the pilot must not alter the installation. The OO will carry out the actions given in para 2.3 of Annex B, and the OO's copy of the transferred flight data will be sent to the NAC. Note that the OO does not have to transfer the data from the FR, but witnesses the transfer and is given a copy on floppy diskette. A6 Calibration of Barograph Function. Pilots are advised to have a barograph calibration carried out either by the manufacturer or by an NAC-approved calibrator before any GNSS FR is used for a claimed flight performance. Altitude and height claims require a calibration for the flight performance concerned, and speed and distance claims need a calibration in order that the altitude difference between the departure and finish points may be calculated. Takeoff and landing pressure altitudes recorded on the FR may be compared later by the NAC with QNH pressures obtained from a local meteorological office.

It is recommended that a copy of this approval document is kept with the equipment concerned, for the use of pilots and Official Observers. B1. CHECKS BEFORE FLIGHT B1.1. Glider Installation of the FR. An OO shall inspect the installation of the FR in the glider before flight and shall note the position in the glider, the version and serial number of the FR, glider registration, date and time. On switching on, the LCD sequence includes VERSION (2.0 or later), SN (serial number of the individual FR). If the glider cannot then be observed continuously by the OO until it takes off on the flight concerned, the OO shall seal the FR to the glider in a way acceptable to his NAC and to IGC (see paras 2 and 3 of the Conditions of Approval given above).. B1.2. At Takeoff. The time and point of takeoff shall be recorded, either directly by the OO, other witnesses, or by other means such as an Air Traffic Control or Club log of takeoffs and landings. B2. AFTER LANDING B2.1. At Landing. The time and exact point of landing shall be recorded, either by an OO, other witnesses (SC3 para (b) (2)), or by other means such as an Air Traffic Control or official Club log of takeoffs and landings. B2.2. Checking the Installation of the FR. As soon as practicable after landing, an OO shall inspect the installation of the FR in the glider (including any sealing to the glider), so that this can be compared to the pre-flight check described in para B1.1 above. B2.3. Transferring the Flight Data. If a portable PC is available, the flight data may be transferred at the glider without disturbing the installation of the FR; if a portable PC is not available, the OO shall check and break any sealing to the glider, and take the FR module to a PC. If the OO is not familiar with the actions required, the pilot or another person may transfer the data while the OO witnesses the process, security is maintained by electronic coding embedded in the FR and in the data transferred which is then independently checked later at the NAC (and at FAI if the claim goes to them). Method: Connect the PC to the main FR module's 4-pin data port, and use either the file DATA- FIL.EXE (see under software above), or use the manufacturer's full PC programme "LXFAI", following the instructions given in the menu. The floppy disk may be self-booting and may have a short menu with instructions. This process will produce a binary format flight data file *.FIL, which shall be on or copied to a diskette signed by the OO, and retained by the OO in safe keeping for later checking and analysis under NAC procedures. The OO's diskette shall originally either be blank or may be the one which contained the DATA-FIL.EXE file. At this or a later time, the binary *.FIL file should be converted to a separate ASCII-format *.IGC file using the CONV-FIL.EXE file of the main LXFAI programme. B3. ANALYSIS OF FLIGHT DATA FILES. A Data Analyst approved by the NAC can then commence the flight analysis using an analysis programme approved by the NAC concerned. In addition to checking flight data, an authenticated version of the file VALI-FIL.EXE shall be used by the NAC and by FAI (if the data goes to them) to check the electronic security coding, and that the flight data in the *.IGC file has not been altered. Method: type VALI-FIL.EXE followed by a space and the name of the file to be checked. The message "Integrity is OK" should appear, not "Integrity is NOT OK" (in the latter case the NAC should investigate the reason). Both the *.FIL and *.IGC flight files should be checked by this method. B4. MEANS OF PROPULSION (MOP) RECORD - MOTOR GLIDERS. The MoP must either be sealed (SC3 para ) or inoperative (SC3 para 5.5.1/2), or the microphone system (para A4.1) used which records an ENL value with each fix up to a maximum ENL of 999. ENL readings of less than 060 indicate normal quiet gliding flight; during aero tow, in a high-speed glide, or in a noisy glider, the ENL may increase to about 200, but on engine running an increase to over 800 ENL has been found on test, some values as high as 905 have been recorded. During ground contact during takeoff and landing, ENL readings up to about 550 are to be expected due to wheel rumble; unlike engine running these last only for a short time. Short periods of higher ENL while gliding (up to about 200 ENL) may indicate aerodynamic noises such as due to airbrakes, lowering the undercarriage, sideslip, etc, and are normal before landing. B5 CALIBRATION OF BAROGRAPH FUNCTION. The FR can be calibrated in an altitude chamber in the same way as a drum barograph. After the calibration, the data is transferred as if it was flight data (see B2.3 above) and the calibration data file will then be analysed and a correction table produced of true against indicated altitudes. This table can then be used to adjust pressure altitudes which are recorded during flight performances and which require correction for validation to IGC criteria. These include takeoff, start and landing altitudes for altitude difference and for comparison with QNH readings, and low and high points on gain-of-height and altitude claims. The maximum altitude tested by GFAC (Mar 96) was 40,000 ft.
