1 Hopper Cristóbal Colón launched on 4 July 2008 Nineteen months after placing the order of the trailing suction hopper dredger Cristóbal Colón with the shipyard Construcciones Navales del Norte in Sestao (Spain), the vessel was launched on 4 July This mega hopper with a hopper capacity of 46,000 m3 is by far the largest of its type, being almost 40% larger than the 33,000 m3 Vasco da Gama, the present record holder. The vessel is equipped with two suction pipes, with a diameter of 1,300 mm, and equipped with electrically driven underwater pumps, with a power of 6,500 kw each, enabling dredging down to water depths of 155 m. Discharging is possible by means of two electrically driven shore discharging dredge pumps, with each 8,000 kw power. Fully loaded, carrying up to 78,000 tons of sand, the Cristóbal Colón will sail at a speed of 18 knots. All this results in a very performant vessel, offering an economic solution for the execution of major dredging and land reclamation jobs. The godmother of the vessel, Mrs. J.F.J. De Nul-De Ryck, mother of Mr. Jan Pieter De Nul and Mr. Dirk De Nul, actual Directors of the company Jan De Nul Group, and widow of Mr. J.F.J. De Nul, the founder of this company, cut the ribbon holding the traditional Champaign bottle, wishing the vessel and its crew a safe and prosperous journey. The bottle crashed, and accompanied by the sound of the horns of nearby vessels in the harbour, the Cristóbal Colón slid into the water. Now the 'Cristóbal Colón' is launched, the construction of its twin vessel, the 'Leiv Eiriksson', can start. 2 Sleephopperzuiger Cristóbal Colón te water gelaten op 4 juli 2008 Negentien maanden na het plaatsen van de bestelling van de sleephopperzuiger Cristóbal Colón bij de scheepswerf Construcciones Navales del Norte in Sestao (Spanje), werd het schip op 4 juli 2008, te water gelaten. Deze mega hopper met een beuninhoud van m³ is veruit de grootste in zijn soort, en is bijna 40% groter dan de Vasco da Gama, die met een beuninhoud van m³ de huidige recordhouder is. 4 Who are we and what do we stand for? In 1938, Jan Frans Jozef De Nul, son of a joiner in Aalst, started what was his lifetimes work: he became a Contractor in Civil Engineering. In 1951, this activity was expanded and the first large dredging project in Jabbeke was started. Ever since that time Jan De Nul Group has seen continual growth culminating into a world leader in the dredging industry. Nowadays, the activities of Jan De Nul Group are based on three main activities: dredging works (84.5% of the total turnover in 2007), civil engineering (13% of the total turnover in 2007) and environmental activities (2.5% of the total turnover in 2007). Worldwide, more than 4,300 employees are deployed and the fleet is continually being expanded. With a new building programme of more than 20 new vessels, by the year 2011, Jan De Nul Group will have at its disposal the most modern and most technologically advanced dredging fleet in the world. Currently, Jan De Nul Group has more new vessels under construction than the three other major dredging companies put together. In spite of its expansion, the Jan De Nul Group has preserved its marked family character. The Company is a 100% family business and as such is managed in a very dynamic way. The family De Nul reinvests the profit from projects in new vessels and the innovations involved with these. The search for new technologies and modernisation takes place on the principle that what we do ourselves, we do better. The majority of the designs of the dredging vessels and the corresponding installations are developed and executed in-house. Thanks to an intensive cooperation between the Engineers at the new building companies, staff at the drawing office and the workshop, new vessels are born in the office in Aalst. In this way, Jan De Nul Group is able to make very quick decisions and to continuously modernize their operations. The Company partly owes its strong growth to a number of complementary factors. Thanks to the growth of world population, container transport and the growing energy consumption, more dredging projects are placed on the market. Jan De Nul Group can offer total packages and meet the criteria of Engineering-Design and Construct contracts: thanks to the shrinkage of government machinery in many western countries and the increasing need for infrastructure in countries where such government machinery does not exist, contractors have many opportunities for such work. Jan De Nul Group can offer to carry out such works as one package: from Conceptual Design to Engineering (basic and detailed) up to and including the execution and completion stages. The massive, yet realistic, investment programme of floating and land equipment; and of personnel training makes it possible for Jan De Nul Group to face up to and meet the needs of the future

5 C The launching The ambitious investment programme for the period is in full progress. In total, more than 1.8 billion will be invested in the new building programme. By doing so, as from 2010, Jan De Nul Group will have at its disposal the largest and most modern dredging fleet in the world, suitable to execute the most complex dredging works. The 223 m long trailing suction hopper dredger Cristóbal Colón is unique in the world of dredging. Not only with respect to its hopper capacity of 46,000 m³ but also with respect to its dredging depth. No other dredger can dredge up to a depth of 155 m. The Cristóbal Colón is equipped with two suction pipes which were entirely designed, detailed and constructed in Aalst by Jan De Nul Group employees. With this vessel, challenging projects with a long sailing distance or extreme depth will become possible and profitable. Shipyard La Naval in Sestao (Bilbao, Spain) is building this vessel which will be commissioned in The ship will probably head for Dubai, from where it will go to Canada to execute dredging in more shallow areas. What you perhaps may not know yet... During a banquet with Cardinal Mendoza, Cristóbal Colón was told that someone else could also have discovered America if he had not. Thereupon, Cristóbal Colón asked all those present if they were able to make their egg stand on its end. Nobody succeeded. The eggs always fell over. Then, Cristóbal Colón grabbed his egg and made one side flat by tapping it on the table. Now, the egg kept standing on its end. He said that everyone can discover something but the point is that you have to be the first one. Some facts and figures in respect of the new dredger. Along with its Owner the vessel is a leader in the world of dredging. The vessel s carrying capacity and capabilities are 50% greater than the largest dredger built to date which is the Vasco Da Gama (also belonging to the same Group) which in turn was, at that time, 50 % larger than any other dredger. The new Dredger s capacity of 46,000 m³ compares to a football field piled up with sand to a height of 6 meters which amount is achieved in less than 3 hours. Another comparison is that this capacity is the same as 2,500 road trucks filled with sand, bumper to bumper, along a highway for over 60 km. The vessel s engine installation is the biggest that has ever been used for a dredger and powered by over 40,000 kw. Its electrical plant is powerfull enough to supply two small provincial towns with domestic electrical needs. The Dredger s suction pipes reach the deepest depth ever achieved by a conventional dredger and extends up to 155 meters in depth. The overall height of the vessel corresponds to that of a tall church but the installation of an elevator makes life easier in this respect. First class accommodation in the vessel for a workforce of over 40 people completes no doubt another major achievement for Jan De Nul Group. C

6 Jan De Nul Group Attention grabbing projects... Currently, the value of dredging work projects in hand amounts to more than 3 billion. These projects are spread all over the world though more than half are situated in the Middle East. Present market situations require an increase in dredging capacity. Up to a few years ago, growth in the hopper fleet kept pace with the expansion of the dredging market - this expansion was largely driven by the increasing number of land reclamation projects which require a higher hopper capacity. A few projects in progress Dubai Waterfront Project off the coast of Dubai. This projects includes reclamation of seven islands which, as it were, encapsulate Palm Jebel Ali. Reclamation of 350 million m³ of sand and placing 15 million m³ of rock, continuously require a considerable part of the Group s fleet and personnel. Currently, 60% of the first island is completed. Furthermore, this Project includes also a civil onshore part: Cove Canal. The completion of the offshore works is foreseen mid If the Client does not request any further extensions, the onshore work is foreseen to be finished by the end of The ports in South America are mainly focused on export and are an important factor for the further economic development of the hinterland. In this context, the deepening work for the access channel of the port of Buenaventura, Colombia is critical. This port, Colombia s only port located on the Pacific Ocean, is the most important export port in the country. Infrastructure works are necessary to fully exploit the capacity of the port and to keep it competitive. By the end of 2007, the first phase was completed, the second phase is foreseen to be completed by mid Together with Brazil, Australia is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Iron ore is mined inland and transported to the ports by means of specially built railways. The hugely increased Asian demand for steel results in serious investments in iron ore quarries, transport capacity and corresponding export ports. The two largest projects executed in 2007 entail the rise in the port capacity of Cape Lambert and Port Hedland. By mid 2007, dredging and reclamation works for a terminal in Port Hedland were completed. Besides the construction of two quays and premises for the storage of iron ore, an access channel and swinging basin were dredged. The dredged material had to be pumped onshore over a distance of 4 km. extract oil by means of traditional offshore methods. Therefore, the Client chose to exploit the oil field from 27 reclaimed islands, including two nearby islands for water injection. Twelve million tons of rock has to be placed to protect the islands against erosion and any rise in sea level. The islands will be connected via 41 km of road, 10 bridges, 180 m long and a bridge of 2.4 km as a connection with the mainland. Besides reclamation and rock works, an access channel and a berth for two vessels have to be dredged. Jan De Nul Group is responsible for both the design and the execution of all these works. By the end of 2009, the works have to be completed and handed over. By mid 2011, 900,000 barrels of extra crude oil will be achieved daily, an increase in the total oil exploitation capacity of Saudi Arabia of about 8%. Dredging projects in Belgium include maintenance and deepening dredging works in the coastal ports and on the river Scheldt. All dredging projects were carried out by order of the Ministry of the Flemish Community. Two trailing suction hopper dredgers (Manzanillo, 4,000 m³, and Alexander von Humboldt, 9,000 m³) are continuously being active on the river Scheldt and since October 2007, the split hopper barge Pinta (3,400 m³) has additionally been deployed. With its Civil Engineering Division, Jan De Nul Group is active in Belgium mainly in connection with the following: wastewater treatment plants, sewerage works, concrete construction, dry earthworks and buildings. The following main Projects were executed in 2007: Wastewater Treatment Plants (a.o. in Grimbergen, Merchtem, Beveren, Thuin); Water Tower (Raeren); Locks (Evergem); Bridges (Welkenraedt, Schuman); Collectors (a.o. Ham-sur-Heure, Antwerp, Leuven); By way of its environmental technology subsidiaries Envisan N.V. and Envisan International S.A., Jan De Nul Group is also represented in the market of redevelopment of groundwater, remediation of polluted soils, construction and redevelopment of landfills, as well as treatment of sludge, dredged and cleared spoil. In Asse, redevelopment of the factory premises of the former Asphaltco site, one of the most heavily polluted sites in Flanders, was commenced. In total, 55,000 ton of material has to be excavated and removed. One of the most challenging works is the Manifa Field Causeway and Island project in the Gulf by order of the Saudi State Oil Company. The Manifa oil field is situated in shallow waters off the coast of Saudi Arabia. The shallow location of the oil field makes it impossible to

8 Wie zijn we en waar staan we voor? In 1938 begon Jan Frans Jozef De Nul, zoon van een Aalsterse schrijnwerker, aan wat zijn levenswerk moest én zou worden: hij werd aannemer in de burgerlijke bouwkunde. In 1951 werd deze activiteit uitgebreid en werd het eerste grote baggerproject in Jabbeke aangevat. Sindsdien is Jan De Nul Group uitgegroeid tot een wereldleider in de baggerwereld. De activiteiten van Jan De Nul Group berusten vandaag op drie pijlers: baggerwerken (84,5% van de totale omzet in 2007), civiele bouw(13% van de totale omzet in 2007) en milieu activiteiten (2,5% van de totale omzet in 2007). Wereldwijd worden meer dan 4300 werknemers tewerkgesteld, en de vloot is in volle uitbreiding. Met een nieuwbouwprogramma van meer dan 20 nieuwe schepen zal Jan De Nul Group tegen 2011 over de modernste en meest technologisch geavanceerde baggervloot beschikken. Momenteel heeft Jan De Nul Group meer nieuwe schepen op stapel staan dan de drie andere baggerbedrijven samen. Ondanks de expansie behield Jan De Nul Group zijn uitgesproken familiale karakter. Het bedrijf is voor 100% in familiehanden, en wordt daardoor zeer dynamisch bestuurd. De familie De Nul herinvesteert de winst in nieuwe schepen, en de daarmee gepaard gaande innovatie. Het onderzoek naar nieuwe technologie en permanente innovatie gebeurt onder het motto wat we zelf doen, doen we beter. Het overgrote deel van de ontwerpen van baggerschepen en bijhorende installaties wordt intern ontwikkeld én uitgevoerd. Door een intensieve samenwerking tussen het ingenieursteam op de nieuwbouwafdeling en mensen in de tekenkamer en het atelier worden nieuwe schepen in de schoot van het kantoor te Aalst geboren. Op deze manier is Jan De Nul Group in staat om zeer kort op de bal te spelen, en continu te vernieuwen. De sterke opgang van de firma is mede te danken aan een aantal structurele factoren, die complementair zijn. Door de toename van de wereldbevolking, het containertransport en de stijgende energieconsumptie, komen er meer baggerprojecten op de markt. Jan De Nul Group kan totaalpakketten aanbieden en tegemoetkomen aan de opmars van Engineering- Design and Construct -contracten: door de afslanking van het overheidsapparaat in vele westerse landen en de groeiende nood aan infrastructuur in landen waar een dergelijk overheidsapparaat niet bestaat, komt er veel werk op de plank bij aannemers en contractors. Jan De Nul Group kan dit werk als één pakket aanbieden: van Conceptual Design over Engineering (basic en detailed) tot en met de uitvoering. Het grootse en toch realistische investeringsprogramma in vlottend en landmaterieel en in opleiding van personeel, maakt dat Jan De Nul Group kan beantwoorden aan de noden van de toekomst

9 C De tewaterlating Het ambitieuze investeringsprogramma is in volle uitvoering. In totaal zal meer dan 1,8 miljard geïnvesteerd worden in het nieuwbouwprogramma. Hierdoor zal Jan De Nul Group vanaf 2010 over de grootste en meest moderne baggervloot ter wereld beschikken, geschikt voor de meest complexe baggerwerken. De sleephopperzuiger Cristóbal Colón is met zijn 223 m lengte uniek in de wereld. Niet alleen wat betreft zijn hoppercapaciteit van m³, maar ook qua baggerdiepte. Geen enkel ander baggerschip kan baggeren tot op een diepte van 155 m. De Cristóbal Colón wordt uitgerust met twee zuigbuizen. Deze zuigbuizen werden geheel in Aalst ontworpen, getekend en vervaardigd door medewerkers van Jan De Nul Group. Met dit schip zullen projecten met een grote uitdaging zoals een lange vaarafstand of extreme diepte mogelijk en rendabel worden. Dit schip wordt gebouwd door de scheepswerf La Naval in Sestao (Bilbao, Spanje) en zal in 2009 in bedrijf worden gesteld. Het zet vermoedelijk koers naar Dubai om in tweede instantie naar Canada te varen om daar het diepere baggerwerk uit te voeren. Wat men misschien nog niet wist... Tijdens een gastmaal bij kardinaal Mendoza werd aan Cristóbal Colón gezegd dat ook iemand anders Amerika had kunnen ontdekken als hij het niet had gedaan. Cristóbal Colón vroeg daarop alle aanwezigen of ze hun ei rechtop konden laten staan. Niemand slaagde daarin. De eieren vielen steeds om. Cristóbal Colón pakte toen zijn ei en maakte één kant plat door het op tafel te tikken. Het ei bleef nu rechtop staan. Hij zei dat iedereen wel iets kan ontdekken, maar dat het erom gaat wie dat het eerste doet. Enkele interessante feiten en cijfers over dit baggerschip Net zoals zijn eigenaar, is dit schip toonaangevend in de baggerwereld. Het laadvermogen en de capaciteit zijn ruim 50% groter dan de Vasco Da Gama, ook eigendom van Jan De Nul Group en destijds reeds het grootste baggerschip ter wereld. De beuninhoud van m³ komt overeen met een voetbalveld dat in minder dan 3 uur volgestort is met zand tot 6 m hoog. Dat betekent vrachtwagens die volgeladen met zand bumper aan bumper de weg blokkeren over een afstand van 60 km. Het totaal motorvermogen bedraagt meer dan kw. Nog nooit eerder werd zo n motorengroep geïnstalleerd op een baggerschip. Het elektrisch vermogen is voldoende groot om twee kleine provinciesteden van elektriciteit te voorzien voor het huishouden. De zuigbuizen reiken tot een diepte die nooit eerder werd behaald door een traditioneel baggerschip. Nu kan er gebaggerd worden tot op 155 m diepte. De afmeting van kiel tot brug is zo hoog als een kerk. Een lift op het schip maakt het leven evenwel een pak gemakkelijker. De accommodatie op het schip voor ruim 40 man kan gemakkelijk concurreren met viersterrenhotels. C

10 Jan De Nul Group Projecten in de kijker De waarde van de baggerwerken in portefeuille bedraagt momenteel meer dan 3 miljard. Deze projecten zijn verspreid over de hele wereld, al situeert meer dan de helft hiervan zich in het Midden-Oosten. De huidige marktomstandigheden vereisen een verhoging van de baggercapaciteit. De groei van de hoppervloot hield tot enkele jaren geleden gelijke tred met de expansie van de baggermarkt. Deze expansie werd immers grotendeels gedreven door het toegenomen aantal landwinningsprojecten, wat een hogere hoppercapaciteit vereist. Enkele lopende projecten Dubai Waterfront Project voor de kust van Dubai. Dit project bestaat uit het opspuiten van zeven eilanden die als het ware Palm Jebel Ali omarmen. Het opspuiten van 350 miljoen m³ zand en het plaatsen van 15 miljoen m³ rots eist continu een aanzienlijk deel van de vloot en het personeelsbestand op. Momenteel is 60% van het eerste eiland afgewerkt. Daarnaast bevat dit project ook een civiel onshoregedeelte: Cove Canal. Het einde van de offshorewerken is voorzien voor midden Indien geen verdere uitbreidingen worden aangevraagd door de klant, zal het onshorewerk eind 2008 worden afgerond. De havens in Zuid-Amerika richten zich vooral op de export en zijn een belangrijke factor voor de verdere economische ontwikkeling van het hinterland. In deze context kaderen de verdiepingswerken voor het toegangskanaal van de haven van Buenaventura, Colombia. Deze haven, Colombia s enige haven gelegen aan de Stille Oceaan, is de belangrijkste exporthaven van het land. De infrastructuurwerken zijn nodig om de capaciteit van de haven ten volle te benutten en om concurrentieel te blijven. Een eerste fase werd afgerond eind 2007, de tweede fase is voorzien voor midden Samen met Brazilië is Australië de grootste ijzerertsproducent ter wereld. IJzererts wordt in het binnenland ontgonnen en via speciaal aangelegde spoorlijnen naar de havens gevoerd. De enorm toegenomen Aziatische vraag naar staal heeft geleid tot serieuze investeringen in de ijzerertsmijnen, transportcapaciteit en bijhorende uitvoerhavens. De twee grootste projecten die in 2007 werden uitgevoerd, kaderen in het verhogen van de havencapaciteit van Cape Lambert en Port Hedland. Midden 2007 werden de bagger- en opspuitingswerken voor een terminal in deze laatste haven afgewerkt. Naast de bouw van twee kades en terreinen voor de opslag van ijzererts, werd een toegangskanaal en draaikom gebaggerd. De gebaggerde specie moest via 4 km lange leidingen aan wal geperst worden. Eén van de grootste uitdagingen is het Manifa Field Causeway and Island project in de Golf in opdracht van de Saudische Staatsoliemaatschappij. Het Manifa olieveld ligt in ondiepe wateren voor de kust van Saudi- Arabië. De ondiepe ligging van het veld maakt het onmogelijk om olie te winnen via de traditionele offshore-ontginning. Daarom opteerde de klant ervoor om het olieveld te exploiteren vanop 27 opgespoten eilanden, inclusief twee verderop gelegen eilanden voor waterinjectie. Twaalf miljoen ton rotsen moeten de eilanden beschermen tegen erosie en tegen een stijging van de zeespiegel. De eilanden zullen onderling worden verbonden via 41 km wegen, 10 bruggen van 180 m lang en een brug van 2,4 km voor de verbinding naar het vasteland. Naast de opspuitings- en rotswerken moeten een toegangskanaal en een ligplaats voor twee schepen gebaggerd worden. Jan De Nul Group is verantwoordelijk voor zowel het ontwerp als de uitvoering van deze werken. Eind 2009 moeten de werken worden opgeleverd. Tegen midden 2011 zullen hier dagelijks vaten extra ruwe olie worden ontgonnen, een toename van de totale ontginningscapaciteit van Saudi-Arabië met zo n 8%. De baggerprojecten in België omvatten de onderhouds- en verdiepingsbaggerwerken voor de kusthavens en op de Schelde. Alle baggerprojecten worden uitgevoerd in opdracht van de Vlaamse overheid. Permanent zijn op de Schelde twee sleephopperzuigers (Manzanillo, m³, en Alexander von Humboldt, m³) actief en in oktober 2007 werd bijkomend de splijthopper Pinta (3.400 m³) ingezet. Met haar civiele divisie is Jan De Nul Group in België vooral actief op volgende terreinen: waterzuiveringstations, rioleringen, betonwerken, grondwerken en gebouwen. In 2007 werd onder meer aan volgende projecten gewerkt: waterzuiveringsstations (o.a. in Grimbergen, Merchtem, Beveren, Thuin) watertoren (Raeren) sluizen (Evergem) bruggen (Welkenraedt, Schuman) collectoren (o.a. Ham-sur-Heure, Antwerpen, Leuven) Via haar milieutechnologiedochters Envisan N.V. en Envisan International S.A. is Jan De Nul Group ook aanwezig op de markt van de sanering van grondwater, de reiniging van vervuilde gronden, de bouw en sanering van stortplaatsen alsook de behandeling van slib-, bagger- en ruimingsspecie. In Asse werd gestart met de sanering van het fabrieksterrein van de voormalige Asphaltco-site, één van de zwaarst vervuilde sites in Vlaanderen. In totaal zal ton materiaal worden afgegraven.
