1 Fall pipe module Simon Stevin ready for departure to Spain Hoboken, 10 June 2009 At 4 pm, the fall pipe module for Jan De Nul Group s mining and fall pipe vessel Simon Stevin was placed on a pontoon to be transported to the La Naval shipyard in Sestao, Spain. This Monday, 15 June, the pontoon and its tugboat leave for Spain. Approximately 7 days later, after passing through the Scheldt past Antwerp and Vlissingen, through the Channel over the Biscay Gulf to Bilbao, the pontoon will arrive in Sestao, where the 2,000 ton module will be hoisted on board the Simon Stevin by means of the floating crane Rambiz. This fall pipe module was designed by Jan De Nul Group itself, aided by Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam in The Netherlands. Iemants Staalconstructies in Arendonk built the module. The heart of the installation, namely the motion base, was built by Jan De Nul on its own account. Facts & Figures: This module is 40 m long, 24 m wide and 31.5 m high (above the deck of the Simon Stevin), the size of an apartment building consisting of about 70 flats divided over 8 floors; The weight at transport is 2,000 tons; The 2,000 ton module is moved by means of 16 SPMTs (self-propelled modular trailers). 96 axes, with a total of 384 wheels, are needed to move the module; In order to install the rocks with great accuracy, the pipe is attached below the vessel until right above the seabed, up to a depth of 2,000m. That is as deep as 6x the Eiffel tower. The fall pipe can be built in 6 hours and, after dumping, can be dismantled in six hours and taken on board of the vessel. To facilitate this, Jan De Nul Group designed a new installation method that is fully automated and that works independently from the vessel movements at sea: the heart of the installation, the so called motion base.

In total, more than 1.8 billion will be invested in the new construction programme. By doing so, Jan De Nul Group will have at its disposal the largest and most modern dredging fleet in the world, including the fall pipe vessel Simon Stevin, suitable to execute the most complex dredging works by The 191 m long vessel will be used for precise rock dumping to a depth of 2,000 m. The system for the unfolding of the fall pipe is extremely advanced and operates fully automatically. At the bottom of the fall pipe there is an ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) that accurately corrects the position of the lower end of the fall pipe. The vessel has a 33,500 tons loading capacity and makes it possible to dump 2,000 tons of rock per hour at a depth of 2,000 m. The vessel can accommodate 70 persons. The fall pipe vessel Simon Stevin will mostly be deployed in the offshore industry in which oil and gas pipes have to be installed at large depths: the Simon Stevin can level the seabed and dump rock up to a depth of 2,000 m. The fall pipe can process boulders with a diameter up to 400 mm, which is more than any other fall pipe vessel on the market. This vessel is being built by the shipbuilding yard La Naval in Sestao (Bilbao, Spain) and will be brought into operation begin November 2009.

3 Fall pipe module Simon Stevin ready for departure to Spain Simon Stevin in the Offshore Industry New oil and gas fields that are difficult to exploit are being sought for because of the energy shortage. Consequently the demand for specialized equipment continues to rise. The planned fleet expansion is therefore especially concentrated on the offshore capacity. With the construction of the 37,500 tons fall pipe vessel Simon Stevin and the 6,000 tons stone dumper Willem De Vlamingh (under construction) and the conversion of the 4,600 tons La Boudeuse into fall pipe vessel Jan De Nul Group reinforces its position and enters the niche market of the offshore rock works. Although it was not a priority in the past, Jan De Nul Group wishes to meet the demand of the oil industry for a single contractor concept in which one company is responsible for the design and execution of all related maritime works such as dredging, rock works and civil constructions. The two new 46,000 m³ trailing suction hopper dredgers Cristóbal Colón and Leiv Eiriksson (both under construction) are not only unique when dredging capacity is concerned, but also when it comes to dredging depth. 4 Valpijpmodule Simon Stevin klaar voor vertrek naar Spanje Hoboken, 10 juni 2009 Om 4 uur deze namiddag rolt de valpijpmodule van het mijnbouw- en valpijpschip Simon Stevin van Jan De Nul Group op een ponton voor transport naar de scheepswerf La Naval in Sestao, Spanje. Aanstaande maandag, 15 juni, vertrekt het ponton met sleepboot richting Spanje. Ongeveer 7 dagen later, na een tocht door de Schelde langs Antwerpen en Vlissingen, door het Kanaal over de Golf van Biskaye naar Bilbao, komt het ponton aan in Sestao, waar de ton zware module aan boord van de Simon Stevin zal worden gehesen. Dit gebeurt in 1 keer door middel van de drijvende kraam Rambiz. Deze valpijpmodule werd door Jan De Nul Group zelf ontworpen, ondersteund door Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam in Nederland. Iemants Staalconstructies uit Arendonk bouwde de module. Het hart van de installatie, met name de motion base, is door Jan De Nul in eigen beheer gebouwd. Enkele feiten & cijfers: Deze module is 40 m lang, 24 m breed, 31,5 m hoog (boven deck van het schip Simon Stevin), zo groot als een flatgebouw met een 70-tal flats verdeeld over 8 verdiepingen; Het gewicht bij transport is ton; Het verrijden van de ton zware module gebeurt door middel van 16 SPMT's (self-propelled modular trailers). Er zijn 96 aslijnen nodig met in totaal 384 wielen om de module te verrrijden; Om de stenen met grote nauwkeurigheid te installeren wordt een pijp onder het schip gehangen tot vlak boven de zeebodem, tot m diep. Dat is zo diep als 6 keer de Eiffeltoren. Deze valpijp wordt in 6 uur opgebouwd en na het storten ook weer in 6 uur afgebroken en meegenomen aan boord. Om dit mogelijk te maken werd door Jan De Nul Group een nieuwe installatie ontwikkeld, volautomatisch en onafhankelijk van de scheepsbewegingen op zee: het hart van de installatie, de zogenaamde motion base.

5 Valpijpmodule Simon Stevin klaar voor vertrek naar Spanje Het mijnbouw- en valpijpschip Simon Stevin en het investeringsprogramma van Jan De Nul Group Het ambitieuze investeringsprogramma is in volle uitvoering. In totaal wordt meer dan 1,8 miljard in het nieuwbouwprogramma geïnvesteerd. Hierdoor zal Jan De Nul Group vanaf 2010 over de grootste en meest moderne baggervloot ter wereld beschikken, geschikt voor de meest complexe baggerwerken, zoals het mijnbouw- en valpijpschip Simon Stevin. Dit 191 m lange schip zal gebruikt worden voor het zeer precies dumpen van rots tot op een diepte van m. Het systeem voor het ontplooien van de valpijp is uitermate geavanceerd en werkt volledig automatisch. Onderaan de valpijp zit een ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) die de positie van de stortmond van de valpijp nauwkeurig corrigeert. Het schip heeft een laadvermogen van ton en maakt het mogelijk om ton stenen per uur te storten op een diepte van m. Er wordt accommodatie voorzien voor 70 personen. Het valpijpschip Simon Stevin vindt vooral toepassing in de offshore-industrie waarbij op grote dieptes olieen gaspijpleidingen geïnstalleerd moeten worden: de Simon Stevin kan tot op m diepte de zeebodem nivelleren en rots storten. De valpijp kan rotsblokken met een doorsnede tot 400 mm verwerken, wat meer is dan eender welk ander valpijpschip op de markt. Dit schip wordt gebouwd door de scheepswerf La Naval in Sestao (Bilbao, Spanje) en zal begin november 2009 in bedrijf worden gesteld.

6 Valpijpmodule Simon Stevin klaar voor vertrek naar Spanje Simon Stevin in de Offshore-Industrie Door de schaarste aan energie, gaat men steeds vaker op zoek naar nieuwe en moeilijker ontginbare olie- en gasvelden. Als gevolg hiervan neemt de vraag naar gespecialiseerd materieel verder toe. De geplande vlootuitbreiding is dan ook voor een aanzienlijk deel geconcentreerd op de offshorecapaciteit. Met de bouw van het ton valpijpschip Simon Stevin en een ton steendumper Willem de Vlamingh (in aanbouw) begeeft Jan De Nul Group zich op de nichemarkt van de offshore-rotswerken. Waar dit voorheen geen prioriteit was, wenst Jan De Nul Group nu tegemoet te komen aan de vraag van de olie-industrie naar een single contractor concept waarbij één firma als hoofdaannemer verantwoordelijk is voor het ontwerp en de uitvoering van alle gerelateerde maritieme werken zoals baggeren, stenenwerken en civiele constructies. De twee nieuwe m³ sleephopperzuigers Cristóbal Colón en Leiv Eiriksson (beide in aanbouw) zijn niet alleen uniek wat betreft hun baggercapaciteit, maar ook qua baggerdiepte. Met deze nieuwe vlootentiteiten zal Jan De Nul Group als enige firma ter wereld baggerwerken tot op een diepte van 155 m kunnen uitvoeren.
