8 Inleiding Martin & Smedts (2009: 8) zijn er wel van overtuigd dat ze door het Belgisch-Nederlands en vooral ook door het Nederlands-Nederlands als natiolecten te beschrijven, volledig recht doen aan de variatie in het Nederlands en dat ze op die manier de gebruikers een nuttig instrument bieden voor een meer genuanceerd taalgebruik. 9 Opzet van de lezing 1. Pluricentriciteit: het klassieke model zoals voorgesteld voor het Duits en het Engels en zijn overdraagbaarheid op het Nederlands; 2. Bezwaren bij de klassieke opvatting van pluricentriciteit en voorstel voor een alternatieve benadering vanuit actuele inzichten over taal; 3. Implicaties voor Nederlands, Duits en Engels met toepassing op het taalonderwijs.

Duits: officiële taal in 7 landen Zentren einer plurizentrischen Sprache sind allerdings nur die jenigen Länder oder Regionen, die eigene standardsprachliche Besonderheiten herausgebildet haben.

12 Ammon et al (2004: XXXIII) Von einem Vollzentrum spricht man dann, wenn die standardsprachlichen Besonderheiten in eigenen Nachschlagewerken, vor allem Wörterbüchern, festgehalten und autorisiert sind. Beim Fehlen eigener sprachlicher Nachschlagewerke spricht man von nationalen Halbzentren einer plurizentrischen Sprache.

13 Pluricentriciteit: Nederlands (1) Pluricentriciteit van Nederlands lijkt ondertussen tot de received opinion te behoren (Smits 2012: 330): Nederlands komt voor in meerdere landen; Nederlands is officiële taal in meerdere landen en regio s; Er zijn meerdere natiolecten met eigen standaardtalige varianten ; De natiolecten zijn (gedeeltelijk) gecodificeerd.

14 Pluricentriciteit: Nederlands (2) Bezwaren tegen de aanname van pluricentriciteit van het Nederlands: Functie van natiolecten? Een Belgisch-Nederlandse standaardtaal past weliswaar goed in het concept van een pluricentrische taal [...] maar de duidelijke aanwezigheid van het Verkavelingsvlaams vertekent het beeld van de standaardtaalpoot in Vlaanderen. (Boonen & Harmes 2012:368)

15 Pluricentriciteit: Nederlands (3) Bezwaren tegen de aanname van pluricentriciteit van het Nederlands: Hoe veel (nationale) centra zijn er? 2 centra (Smits 2012); bi-centriciteit (De Caluwe 2012) Voll- vs. Halbzentrum (vgl. Ammon et al 2004) Suriname: the degree of standardisation of the Surinamese variety is very limited (Geerts 1992: 75) Caribisch Nederlands: Taal [...] en rekenen zijn op peil. [...] Dat voorkomt dat de overgang naar Nederlandstalig voortgezet onderwijs [...] een struikelblok wordt [...] (Onderwijsagenda Caribisch Nederland 2011) 4 centra? Er is niet één standaard van het Nederlands. Nederlands is een bundeling van gelijkwaardige variëteiten: het Nederlands in de Antillen, Nederland, Suriname en Vlaanderen (België). It simultaneously shapes and hides many of the actual practices of speakers, especially minorities and migrants. 22 Implicaties en toepassing Tot nog toe ging de discussie over de toepasbaarheid van het Duitse en Engelse model van pluricentriciteit op de Nederlandse taalsituatie Alternatief: vertrekken vanuit een actueel concept van taal dat recht doet aan de realiteit van taalgebruik, bv. pluricentric practices relevant voor Nederlands, Duits en Engels! Toepassing: taalonderwijs Awareness: bewustmaking van variatie bv. Dutch++
