ONDERZOEKSOPDRACHT KCNR SEPTEMBER 2016 Titel van de opdracht (Kort en krachtige weergave van het onderwerp) Technical development and improvement of underwater drones for water management IAESTE internship/research assignment @INDYMO Korte omschrijving van de onderzoeksopdracht Underwater drones are promising tools for several applications in the water sector, namely to perform water quality measurements, ecological scans or underwater inspections. They can provide additional insight and understanding of the water system, and therefore contribute for good water management decisions. With universities of applied science in Groningen, Amsterdam and Leeuwarden we will bring this development further with casestudies in North East Netherlands and we provide office workspace in Leeuwarden en Groningen. Aansluiting bij thema s NoorderRuimte x Duurzaamheid & Overvloed x Gezondheid & welzijn Aanleiding tot de onderzoeksopdracht en de huidige situatie In the last year, INDYMO (www.indymo.nl), a recently created startup to explore innovative monitoring solutions, has experimented and tested remote-controlled underwater drone technology (ROV) in several research pilots around The Netherlands. The concept is to equip the submersible vehicles with water quality sensors (multi-parameter probes), high definition video cameras, and lights. The data and footage collected are then used to assess water quality and ecology, to perform underwater infra-structure inspections, or to search for pollution sources. The use of drones allows to easily reach and collect data/footage from zones of difficult access, which are usually expensive, troublesome or even unsafe to perform with other
methods. However, with the current setup and available equipment, there are still some challenges to overcome, as the optimal specs are not yet available for the intended end-use. In the coming months, INDYMO will work on the development of new solutions to surpass these limitations. The goal is to develop and build a compact and self-navigating underwater drone, able to follow pre-defined routes, and equipped with a wide range of measurement capabilities and functionalities. Some of the planned tasks towards this goal include the development and optimization of an efficient drone balancing method (different equipment is installed for every tasks, which affects the balance of the drone), research and implementation of an underwater positioning system (for navigation and logging for post data-analysis in GIS), and the development of a water sample collection system that can be activated remotely (water samples are crucial for data validation in a laboratory, and provide additional information about the water system). Gewenste situatie met betrekking tot het vraagstuk To accomplish this, INDYMO is currently seeking interns with interest in the topic and that want to be part of the technical development of aquatic drones, and related sensor and positioning systems. As INDYMO is currently lacking technical drone development knowledge, the selected student needs a very good ability to work independently (when necessary, support will be provided by the RDM Center of Expertise, one of INDYMO s partners). INDYMO can offer a great project within an innovative context to apply the technical knowledge of the intern (preferably from electro-technical or mechanical engineering backgrounds). The research will be mainly conducted at RDM Campus (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and at Yes!Delft (Delft, The Netherlands).
