5 SURINAME IN FACTS Location Suriname is located on the north coast of South America at 2-6 NB, WL Surface 163,800 square kilometers. Population Approximately 493,000 inhabitants. Etnic groups 27% East Indians, 18% Afro-Surinamese (Creoles), 15% Javanese, 15% Maroons, Amerindians, Chinese, Lebanese, Israelis, Europeans and others 25%. Religion 27% Hindu, 25% Protestant, 23% Roman Catholic, 20% Muslim, 5% other. Capital Paramaribo (approximately 250,000 inhabitants). Form of government Democratic Republic headed by the President, Mr. Ronald R. Venetiaan; Suriname became independent in 1975 on the 25th of November. Languages Dutch is the offi cial language. English is widely spoken. The common language is Sranan Tongo. Transportation Public transportation: public and private bus services. Taxis both certifi ed taxis and private cars or hucksters offer their services. Cars Suriname has left-handed traffi c. For foreigners an international driver s license is required. Car rental is fairly priced. You can also rent bicycles or mopeds. Electricity Generally 110 volt/ 60hertz. The larger hotels often provide 220 volt / 60 hertz. Time zone The time in Suriname is 2 hours later than the Eastern Standard Time (EST) in the USA and 3 hours behind of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in Europe. Traveling to Suriname Air transportation Via the Netherlands (Amsterdam), United States of America (Miami), Brazil (Belem do Para), Aruba, La Guyane Française (Cayenne), Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago (Port of Spain), and Curaçao. Road transportation Via Guyana (you will enter Suriname at South Drain, Nickerie). Via French Guyana (via St. George and Cayenne, you will enter Suriname at Albina, Marowijne). Boat transportation Small sailing boats can harbor at individual ports (with permission). Large (cruise) ships harbor at the Nieuwe Haven. Climate Tropical with a high humidity. The temperature is on average 28 C. Seasons: short dry season from February through April; long rainy season from May to Mid August; long dry season from Mid August through November; short rainy season from December through January. Currency Surinamese dollar (SRD). In general, credit cards are still not widely accepted in Suriname. Some hotels and travel agencies are happy to accept American Express, Visa and Master Card. Commonly accepted currencies such as US Dollars, Euros as well as traveler s checks, can be safely exchanged at any bank or money exchange offi ce. The RBTT bank accepts some Dutch bank cards. 7

8 Natuurlijk en cultureel erfgoed Suriname is een prachtig toeristisch land dat met de opname van twee van haar uitzonderlijk mooie gebieden op de wereldkaart is geplaatst. De moderne toerist die iets anders wil dan languit op het strand liggen en naar de blauwe zee kijken, komt in ons land ruimschoots aan zijn trekken. Hij kan er kennismaken met nieuwe culturen, historische bezienswaardigheden bekijken en vooral onze ongerepte natuur bezoeken. Bij een reis naar ons binnenland kan de bezoeker vertoeven in het Centraal Suriname Natuurreservaat, dat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de Unesco staat. Dit natuurreservaat, groot 1,6 miljoen hectare, waar tot nu toe ongekende planten en dieren, acht apensoorten en meer dan 700 verschillende vogels leven, is een waar paradijs voor wie op zoek is naar puur natuur, omdat er werkelijk geen mens woont. De Surinaamse bevolking van nog geen half miljoen zielen is van een grote diversiteit en de toerist kan in Paramaribo wandelen langs moskee en synagoge, mandir en kathedraal, om nog niet eens te spreken van de historische koloniale gebouwen in het oude centrum van de stad, dat ook een plaats heeft gekregen op de Unesco Werelderfgoedlijst. Suriname heeft dus alles in huis om aantrekkelijk te zijn voor de hedendaagse toerist. Voeg daarbij nog de vriendelijke bevolking die spreekwoordelijk gastvrij is en voor Nederlanders het feit dat men hier gewoon Hollands praat en de vakantie kan niet meer stuk. 9 Natural and Cultural Heritage Suriname is a beautiful tourist destination placed on the world map with two of its unique sites. The modern tourist craving for a different experience than lying stretched out on a beach watching the blue sea will have plentiful to choose from in our country. He will have the opportunity to meet new cultures, visit historic sites and in particular, enjoy our untouched nature. During a trip into the interior, you can visit the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, placed on the World Heritage List of the Unesco. This nature reserve with a land surface of 1.6 hectares, in which still unprecedented plants and animals live as well as eight types of monkeys and over 700 different types of birds, is a true paradise for lovers of unspoiled nature because this part of the world is still inhabited by men. The Surinamese population of less then half a million souls is characterized by a great diversity and tourists can enjoy a sightseeing walk through Paramaribo passing by a mosque and synagogue, right next to each other, a mandir and the cathedral, not to mention the historic colonial buildings in the old part of the inner city, also placed on the Unesco World Heritage List. 11 Kunst in Suriname In de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw kwam de ontwikkeling van kunstvormen in Suriname op gang. Na de afschaffing van de slavernij zorgden de nieuwe immigranten er mede voor dat ons land cultureel heel divers werd. Deze verrijking is in de Surinaamse samenleving van vandaag goed te merken. Niet alleen in de uitgebreide Surinaamse keuken, de religies, de traditionele kledij en de verscheidenheid aan gesproken talen, maar ook in de kunstuitingen, zang en dans, de toneeluitvoeringen en vooral ook in de beeldende kunsten. In het laatste kwart van de vorige eeuw is een keur van schilders en beeldhouwers in Suriname opgeleid, die als inspirerende voorbeeldfi guren Wim Bos Verschuur en Nola Hatterman had. Opleidingsinitiatieven zijn na de onafhankelijkheid genomen en het Nola Hatterman Instituut, begonnen in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw in Paramaribo, neemt in de opleiding van jonge beeldende kunstenaars in Suriname nog steeds een zeer prominente plaats in. De schilderkunst in ons land kent veel elementen van deze etnische diversiteit. Ook in de beeldhouwkunst, de keramiek en de batikkunst is deze verscheidenheid duidelijk zichtbaar. De kunstuitingen in de 19e eeuw hadden nog een sterk Europees karakter en in de 20e begonnen kunstenaars zich te richten op de samenleving zelf en de actualiteit daarin, zoals in de dichtkunst en in de beeldende kunsten. Vanaf de Tweede Wereldoorlog kwam het Surinaamse element in de techniek, in de kleur en de materialen steeds nadrukkelijker naar voren. Anno 2007 zijn onze kunstenaars zowel lokaal als internationaal actief. Toeristen kunnen de verschillende kunstvormen bewonderen in de vele galeries en tijdens de exposities die gedurende het gehele jaar worden georganiseerd, met als hoogtepunt de Nationale Kunstbeurs in november. Gaandeweg hebben de beeldende kunsten zich ontwikkeld tot een sector die niet meer weg te denken is en die ook in de Surinaamse economie een steeds belangrijkere plaats inneemt. 13

12 Art in Suriname The development of art forms in Suriname got into its stride in the first half of the 19th century. After the abolishment of slavery, the new immigrants contributed to the remarkable cultural diversity of the country. This enrichment is still very much visible in the Surinamese community today. Not only in the wide variety of Surinamese cuisine, various religions, traditional costumes and many different languages but also in expressions of art, singing and dancing, theatrical performances and especially expressive arts. The art of painting in our country knows many elements of this ethnic diversity. This diversity is also clearly visible in sculpting, ceramics and batik art. The artistic expressions in the 19th century still manifested a strong European character and in the 20th century artists began to focus on the community itself and the actuality therein such as was expressed in poetry and expressive arts. As of the Second World War, the Surinamese element in technique, color and materials increasingly took the upper hand. In the last quarter of the past century, many painters and sculptors were trained in Suriname and they all had as their role models Wim Bos Verschuur and Nola Hatterman. Training initiatives were taken after Suriname s independence and the Nola Hatterman Institute, established in the eighties of the past century in Paramaribo, still plays a predominant role in the training of young expressive artists. Now in 2007, our artists are active both nationally and internationally. Tourists can admire the various art forms in the many galleries and during expositions held the whole year through with as highlight the National Art Fair in November. Gradually, the expressive arts developed into a sector which is now indispensable and which holds an increasingly important position even in the Surinamese economy. Après l abolition de l esclavage les nouveaux immigrant ont participé à la diversité culturelle du pays. Cette richesse est à présent très visible dans la communauté Surinamaise. Non seulement dans la cuisine, la religion, les costumes traditionnels et les nombreuses langues qui y sont parlées mais également dans l expression artistique, le chant et la danse, les pièces de théâtres et surtout dans l art plastique. L art de peinture dans notre pays connaît beaucoup d élément de cette diversité ethnique. Cette diversité est également très présente dans l expression de sculptures, de céramique et de l art batik. L expression artistique avait encore une grande influence européenne au 19ieme siècle et au 20ieme siècle les artistes ont commencé a se diriger vers la population et son actualité tel dans les récits et l art visuel. A partir de la seconde guerre mondiale l élément Surinamais c est profilé par la technique, la couleur et les matériaux. Dans le dernier quart du siècle dernier une poigné de peintres et de sculpteurs ont été formé ayant comme personne de figure Wim Bos Verschuur et Nola Hatterman. Des initiatives de formation ont été prise après l indépendance et l institut Nola Hatterman, ayant commencé à Paramaribo dans les années 80 du siècle dernier, occupe toujours une place très proéminente dans l éducation de jeunes artistes au Suriname. Année 2007, nos artistes sont actifs au niveau locale et international. Les touristes peuvent admirer les différentes formes artistiques dans les nombreuses galeries et durant des expositions qui sont organisé l année durant avec comme point culminant le salon d art national en novembre. Tout au long l art plastique c est développé vers un secteur qui n est plus à écarter de la pensé et qui prend également un rôle significatif dans l économie du Suriname. 14

Javanen hebben hun kruidige keuken, Hindostanen stoven hun gerechten in allerlei soorten massala en eten daarbij roti of rijst, Chinezen houden van verse producten en korte bereidingstechnieken en iedereen eet van elkaar. Groente en fruit worden op kleine kostgrondjes met zorg gekweekt. Vele families voorzien in hun eigen behoefte en verkopen wat over is in stalletjes langs de weg en op de verschillende markten. Kippen scharrelen over het erf en dat levert de typische Sranan fowru op. Het varkensvlees is van uitstekende kwaliteit en misschien wel het lekkerste van de wereld. Een mooie trip is een bezoek aan de Centrale Markt s morgens vroeg. Hier kun je echt alles kopen. De aanvoer van verse vis en levende krab gaat de hele dag door; garnalen in alle maten, gepeld of ongepeld. Een kip wordt op je aanwijzing geslacht. Iets verder liggen verse bladgroenten en fruit. In het overdekte gedeelte zijn marinades, sambals, kruiden en specerijen. Wil je nog dieper in de eetcultuur duiken, bezoek dan op zondag de Javaanse markt in Noord en de Chinese aan de Keizerstraat: een grote ontdekking. 16 Van al het eten, krijg je trek, maar dat is geen probleem, want overal kan je eten kopen. Het is mogelijk om de klok rond te eten aan de Waterkant. Snacks, koekjes, voedzame gerechten en lokale drankjes zijn verkrijgbaar. Je kunt in Suriname eenvoudig eten maar ook exclusief dineren: van de warungs op Blauwgrond tot de prestigieuze hotels in het uitgaansgebied. De bartenders shaken overheerlijke drankjes en bijzondere cocktails. Er komen steeds meer vakbekwame koks, die durven te experimenteren met wat het land biedt. Tongstrelende en trendy gerechten, zoals garnalen in geraspte kokos met een mango-peperchutney, saotosoep van gerookte kip, sinaasappel roti met eend en een luchtig dessert van pomtayer. Het Suriname Culinary Team heeft tweemaal brons gehaald op Caraïbische wedstrijden en kwam dit jaar met een bijzondere prijs thuis, de Spirit of the Caribbean, omdat de chefs en bartender een nieuwe inspiratie hebben gegeven aan de Caribbean: bijzondere inheemse kruiden en specerijen en toepassingen op een verfrissende manier. 15 Sranan nyang... a culinary trip in cultures Suriname has a rich culinary culture due to its divers ethnic population. Game eaten with cassava is the daily meal of the people in the interior. Popular among Creoles is moks alesi (cook up rice) and pom (oven dish made from root vegetable). The Javanese have their spicy kitchen and the Hindustani prepare their dishes with all kinds of massala (Hindu yellow herbal powder) which they eat with rice or roti (flour pancake). The Chinese use fresh products and vegetables with a short preparation method after which everyone joins in eating. Vegetables and fruit are meticulously cultivated on small agricultural plots. Many families provide in their own living in this way and sell the excessive crop in stalls along the road or on the various markets. Chickens scrape around in the yards and this produces the typical Sranan fowru (Surinamese fowl). Pork meat in Suriname is of an excellent quality and probably the most delicious the world over. A beautiful trip is a visit to the Central Market in the early morning hours. Here you can buy almost anything. Fresh fish and live crabs supplied the whole day through; shrimps in all sizes, shelled or unshelled. A chicken is killed for use in food upon the buyer s request. A little further you find fresh green vegetables and fruit. In the market hall the tantalizing smell of marinades, sambal, herbs and spices fills the air. For those who wish to experience a more profound culinary adventure a visit to the Javanese market on Sundays in North Paramaribo or the Chinese market at Keizerstraat is a true revelation. All different types of food Suriname has to offer will surely make you feel hungry. Well, that s no problem. You can buy food almost everywhere. At Waterkant along the river, you can choose to your heart s content from a wide variety of snacks, cakes, nourishing dishes and local drinks. In Suriname you can enjoy a simple meal in the warungs (Javanese eateries) at Blauwgrond or or dine exclusively in the prestigious hotels in the entertainment city centre. The bartenders shake absolutely delicious drinks and special cocktails. An increasing number of very skilled chefs dare to experiment with all food products Suriname has to offer. Savory and trendy dishes such as shrimps prepared in grated coconut with a mangopepper chutney, saoto soep with smoked chicken, a roti prepared with oranges and duck and a light dessert made from pomtayer (root vegetable). The Suriname Culinary Team won a bronze medal twice at Caribbean culinary competitions and took home a special award this year: the Spirit of the Caribbean because the chefs and bartenders brought a new inspiration to the Caribbean: unique national herbs and spices and refreshing preparation methods. Une belle balade est une visite au marché central tôt le matin. Ici vous pourrez vraiment tout acheter. La livraison de poissons frais et de crabes vivants est constante; des crevettes de toutes tailles, peler ou pas. Un poulet est abattu a votre demande. Un peu plus loin se trouvent les légumes à feuilles et les fruits. Dans la partie couverte sont les marinades, les sambals, les épices et les herbes. De bezienswaardigheden op deze route zijn niet alleen de lanceerbasis en de Duivelseilanden in Kourou, maar ook de natuurreservaten onderweg. Na Cayenne verandert het landschap aanmerkelijk. De bomen lijken hoger en het uitzicht wordt gekenmerkt door boslandschap en heuvelland. De aankomst in St. George aan de rand van de rivier die Frans Guyana van Brazilië scheidt, betekent dat er negen uren reistijd op zit. Men kan doorreizen na de oversteek of genieten van een welver-diende rust in het Braziliaanse grensstadje Oiapoc. De volgende dag begint het laatste traject naar de stad Macapá met de auto of de bus; een trip van tien lange uren, maar eenmaal in Macapá, worden de vermoeienissen rijkelijk beloond. Een ware ecostad ontrolt zich voor de ogen; 21 we zien de Marco Zero, het monument op de evenaar die met drie dikke lijnen is aan gegeven, en natuurlijk de immense Amazonrivier. De reis kan ook omgekeerd ondernomen worden: vanuit Macapá door Frans Guyana naar Suriname. Een spectaculaire tocht, waarbij men kan genieten van andere bezienswaardigheden dan van de heenreis. Terwijl men en route is naar de enige voormalige Nederlandse kolonie in Zuid- Amerika, proeft men nog de sporen van het Franse erfgoed bij onze oosterburen, waarna de reis zich vervolgt tot de grenspost in Albina. En wat wij voor de bezoeker in petto hebben, is niet onbekend. Onze historische binnenstad, de oude plantages, het Galibi Natuurreservaat, Bigi Pan, het Boven Suriname riviergebied en de Raleighvallen, een greep uit de vele attracties van ons land. In een volgende fase zal de samenwerking op toerismegebied vanuit Suriname uitgebreid worden in westelijke rich-ting naar Guyana, en eventueel andere omliggende landen. Hierdoor zullen er nog meer reismogelijkheden ontstaan voor de toeristen die ons land aandoen.

20 Combined Amazon Tourism Product: On four wheels to our neighboring countries The idea is shared by many adventurers: to travel by road straight through French Guiana to our southern neighboring country, Brazil. And this is very much possible. The only thing asked from the traveler is a lot of patience because the trip takes two full days but the experience is truly unique. You depart, early in the morning, from Paramaribo to your fi rst destination Albina where you will cross over the river to French Guiana by dug-out canoe or ferry boat. The interesting sites along the route include the launch site and Devils Islands in Kourou, as well as the nature reserves on the way. Passed Cayenne, the landscape changes remarkably. The trees seem higher and the view is characterized by woodlands and hills. After your arrival in St. George, along the river separating French Guiana from Brazil, you will have a traveling time of nine hours behind you. From there you have the opportunity to continue the trip, after crossing the river, or enjoy a well-deserved rest in the small Brazilian border town Oiapoc. The following day, the last part of the route onto the city Macapá begins by car or by bus; a trip of ten long hours but once you arrive in Macapá, all endurance will be well rewarded. A true eco-city unfurls before your eyes; you will see the Marco Zero, the monument on the equator, indicated by three wide lines, and of course, the immense Amazon river. The trip can also be made by reversed route: from Macapá through French Guiana to Suriname. A spectacular trip on which you can enjoy different interesting sites compared to the outward journey. While being en route to the only former Dutch colony in South America, you will still be able to picture the marks of the French heritage of our eastern neighbors. The trip is afterwards continued to the border crossing in Albina. And what we have in store for visitors to Suriname, is all too familiar. Our historic inner city, old plantations, the Galibi Nature Reserve, Bigi Pan, the Upper Suriname river area and Raleigh Falls, are just a small pick from the many beautiful attractions our country has to offer. In a following phase, the cooperation in the area of tourism from Suriname will be further extended in western direction to Guyana and possibly other surrounding countries. This will create more travel opportunities for tourists visiting our country. Une vrai ville verte se dévoile à vos yeux ; vous y verrais le macro zéro, le monument sur l équateur marqué par trois grosses lignes, et bien sur l immense rivière amazone. Le voyage peut également être vécu 22 inversement : depuis Macapá, par la Guyane vers le Suriname. Une traversé spectaculaire ou l on peut profi té d autres sites attractifs que sur le chemin d aller. Alors que vous en route vers la seule ancienne colonie en Amérique du sud vous goûterez encore les traces de l héritage Français chez nos voisins de l Est, après quoi le voyage continue vers le post frontalier d Albina. Et ce que nous avons a offrir aux visiteurs n est pas inconnu. Notre ville historique, les anciennes plantations, la réserve naturelle de Galibi, Bigi Pan, la région du Boven Suriname et les chutes Raleigh, une fourchette des nombreuses attractions ne notre pays. Dans une prochaine phase la coopération au niveau touristique serra agrandi en du coté Ouest ver Guyana, et éventuellement vers d autres pays avoisinants. Ainsi d autres possibilités de voyages se créeront pour les touristes qui s arrêtent dans notre pays.
