Alle voordrachten vinden plaats onder leiding van moderatoren. De abstracts worden gepubliceerd in een speciale uitgave van het NTvA, dat u enkele dagen voor de Wetenschapsdag ontvangt. Voertaal In de plenaire zaal worden de voordrachten in de Engelse taal gehouden. De voordrachten bij de Parallel Presentations kunnen in zowel de Nederlandse als de Engelse taal gehouden worden. Evaluatie U ontvangt in de week na de Wetenschapsdag een (digitaal) evaluatieformulier. Wij verzoeken u vriendelijk deze in te vullen. Het organiserend comité stelt uw mening zeer op prijs. 3 Geachte collegae, Dit jaar vindt de Wetenschapsdag van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Anesthesiologie voor de achtste keer plaats! Het organiserend comité is verheugd u weer een interessant en afwisselend programma te kunnen aanbieden. De commissie constateert ook dit jaar een stijgende lijn in de kwaliteit van de ingezonden abstracts. Het is goed om te zien dat meer en meer collegae belangstelling tonen voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek binnen de Anesthesiologie. Ook dit jaar is een tweetal zeer gerenommeerde wetenschappers als gastsprekers uitgenodigd: Walter Paulus en Adrian Gelb. In dit programmaboekje worden zij aan u voorgesteld. Ook heeft de commissie de ontvanger van de Young Investigator Grant 009 gevraagd zijn onderzoeksresultaten te presenteren. De Wetenschapsdag is bedoeld om onderzoekers en alle geïnteresseerden de mogelijkheid te geven elkaar te ontmoeten en te inspireren. Er zal actuele klinische en fundamentele wetenschap binnen Nederlandse ziekenhuizen worden gepresenteerd. Namens de commissie wens ik u een bijzonder uitdagende Wetenschapsdag toe! 9 Diastolic Heart Failure: From Pathophysiological Curiosity to Pandemia KEYNOTE SPEAKER Prof.dr. Walter J. Paulus Physiology, VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam Half of patients with heart failure (HF) have a normal left ventricular ejection fraction (HFNEF). Morbidity and mortality in HFNEF are similar to values observed in patients with HF and reduced EF, yet no effective treatment has been identified. While early research focused on the importance of diastolic dysfunction in the pathophysiology of HFNEF, recent studies have revealed that multiple non-diastolic abnormalities in cardiovascular function also contribute. Diagnosis of HFNEF is frequently challenging and relies upon careful clinical evaluation, echo-doppler cardiography, and invasive haemodynamic assessment. Despite use of similar drugs, outcome of recent heart failure (HF) trials was frequently neutral in HFNEF and positive in HF with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFREF). The neutral outcome of HFNEF trials was often attributed to deficient HFNEF patient recruitment with inclusion of many HFREF or non-cardiac patients. Because of non-adherence to diagnostic guidelines, clinical and hemodynamic features of trial populations indeed frequently differed from typical HFNEF populations with HF often induced by ischemic heart disease instead of hypertension and with eccentric instead of concentric LV remodeling. Non-adherence to guidelines also led to underpowered trials with low incidence of outcome events such as death or HF hospitalizations. The principal mechanisms of HFNEF, diagnostic approaches, and clinical trials will be reviewed, along with a discussion of novel treatment strategies that are currently under investigation or hold promise for the future. 10 A fresh look at tissue oxygenation: measuring microvascular and mitochondrial oxygen tension Bert Mik WINNAAR YOUNG INVESTIGATOR GRANT 009 Oxygen plays a key role in cellular energy metabolism as the primary oxidant in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Oxygen has long been regarded as a passive bystander in metabolism. However, more recently, oxygen has been shown to regulate metabolism and gene expression. Nowadays, there is emerging concern about the deleterious effects of both hypoxia and hyperoxia in the critically ill. These novel insights have increased the need to further our understanding of cellular oxygenation in vivo. Despite the existence of many techniques to measure oxygen at the tissue level, our understanding of tissue oxygenation is still incomplete. Tissue can be regarded as functionally compartmentalized in microcirculation, interstitial and intracellular space. The bias of many techniques towards a certain compartment has led to large variations in reported tissue oxygen tension (tpo). In the present research project we aimed at developing a novel platform technology for comprehensive measurement of tissue oxygenation. Based on oxygen-dependent quenching of delayed luminescence we developed an approach that allows simultaneous measurement of microvascular PO ( PO) and mitochondrial PO (mitopo) in a small tissue volume. Bert Mik studied medicine at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and obtained his M.D. degree in 005. From 006 till 00 he was trained as an anesthesiologist at the Department of Anesthesiology of the Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam. Consecutively he followed his intensive care training at the Department of Intensive Care of the Erasmus MC. In 0 Bert Mik received his Ph.D. degree cum laude from the University of Amsterdam. Currently he is working as a staff member in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of the Erasmus MC. Furthermore, since July 0, he is heading the Laboratory of Experimental Anesthesiology in the same institution. The focus of Dr. Mik s research is on oxygen transport, tissue oxygenation and oxygen consumption in the perioperative and intensive care setting. He has particular interest in the topic of mitochondrial dysfunction in the critically ill. He (co-)authored 6 scientific papers and several patent applications. In 00 he has received a Life Sciences Pre-Seed Grant from the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMW) and a Valorisation Grant from the Dutch Technology Foundation (STW). In addition, he received the Young Investigator Grant 009 from the Dutch Society of Anesthesiology.

11 Mentoring Matters Professor Adrian W. Gelb KEYNOTE SPEAKER Professor Adrian W Gelb graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 97 and did his anaesthesia training in the UK and Canada followed by a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Thereafter he joined the Anaesthesia Department of the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada where he served as the co-director of the ICU at University Hospital for a decade. From 990 until 00 he was the Professor & Chair of the Department of Anaesthesia, University of Western Ontario and also held concurrent professorial appointments in the Departments of Pharmacology and Clinical Neurological Sciences. At the beginning of 004 he joined the Department of Anesthesia at the University of California San Francisco where he is a Professor and Vice Chair. Professor Gelb s research has focused on neuroanesthesia and the effects of anesthesia on the brain. He has published >00 articles and book chapters. His most recent book is Essentials of Neuroanesthesia & Neurointensive Care. He has served on multiple editorial boards including Anesthesia & Analgesia, EJA, and Canadian J Anesth. Leadership roles have included presidents of the Society of Neuroanesthesia & Critical Care (SNACC), International Society for Anesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP) and the IARS. Professor Gelb is a frequent invited speaker and has given >50 invited lectures. He was recently awarded the SNACC Distinguished Service Award and also received an award from the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Anesthesia in China.

12 De Nederlandse Vereniging voor Anesthesiologie roept op tot indienen van een aanvraag voor de voor een periode van twee jaar De onderzoeker, het onderzoek en de infrastructuur De aanvrager is reeds gepromoveerd of bevindt zich in de laatste fase van zijn promotieonderzoek en is lid van de NVA (promotiedatum binnen één jaar). Naast wetenschappelijke ambitie beschikt de aanvrager over een duidelijk en goed uitgewerkt plan voor vervolgonderzoek. De resultaten van het voorgestelde onderzoek dienen voor de anesthesiologie belangrijke klinische of fundamentele onderzoeksvragen te beantwoorden. Multidisciplinaire onderzoeksamenwerking wordt sterk aangemoedigd. Op de afdeling of binnen de vakgroep waar hij/zij werkt is een goede infrastructuur voor onderzoek en een senioronderzoeker die als begeleider en klankbord functioneert. Matching : de afdeling draagt bij aan de kosten van het onderzoek Een dergelijke persoonsgebonden tweejarige NVA subsidie kan slechts voor een deel kostendekkend zijn. Van de instelling waar de onderzoeker werkzaam is, wordt verwacht dat deze een bijdrage levert aan het project welke minimaal gelijk is aan de toegekende subsidie ( matching ). Deze bijdrage kan bestaan uit het ter beschikking stellen van (een deel van) de onderzoektijd, onderzoekassistentie (research nurse) of laboratoriumfaciliteiten.
