Archaeological Forum: State formation and sanctuaries in Apennine Italy The Archaeological Forum is the only facultywide general archaeological meeting open to all staff and students (graduate and undergraduate). Meetings take place every 2 weeks on Tuesday afternoons from 4-5pm. Forum topics are wide-ranging and bring together archaeological research from all regions and specialisms for presentation to a broader archaeological audience, with the aim of provoking a stimulating discussion. This is achieved by a series of talks in which researchers present their work. Presentations last about minutes, followed by a discussion which can be continued in a more informal setting! The next Archaeological Forum will take place on 13 November, and is to be presented by Tesse Stek. The title is State formation and sanctuaries in Apennine Italy. All forums take place from 4-5 pm in Wijkplaats 2/002. You are most welcome to attend! The conference days will take place on Friday 16 November and Saturday 17 November at the congress center 'de ReeHorst' in Ede. Read more... Guest lecture: Blood of the Provinces Prof. dr. Ian Haynes from the University of Newcastleupon-Tyne will give a guest lecture entitled Blood of the Provinces, the experience of Roman auxiliary soldiers Abstract: The Provinces are won by the blood of the provinces, claims Julius Civilis in Tacitus spirited account of Rome s bloodstained year of four emperors, AD 69. Civilis speech was no more than a literary fiction, but the argument he voices reflects a defining feature of the Roman Empire its capacity to pursue its interests through the extensive exploitation of non-citizen soldiers. This lecture will examine how these soldiers, themselves potential enemies of the Roman order, were incorporated into the imperial system. It will argue that while cash and cane played a crucial role in harnessing the manpower of provincial populations, many more subtle processes were at play. The study of these processes offers new insight into the operation of Roman power, from distant frontiers to the very heart of empire, the Eternal City itself. 4 Page 4 of 6 Submissions for pre-selection should include: - a full proposal in English (i.e. a proposal corresponding to the 'Richtlijnen voor het opstellen van een aanvraag' specified in the Call for Proposals, pp. 13 ff.; nrs. 1 up to and including 12, and 14 (nr. 13, the budget, is not needed for this pre-selection round)). - a letter of recommendation (in Dutch or English) by the supervisor (the promotor ) for both the PhD-candidate and the project. Applications should be submitted to the Humanities Faculty Board before 21 January 2013, noon. Pre-selection results will be communicated before 19 February 2013, at the latest. Call for paper Island, Mainland, Coastland & Hinterland, deadline 30 november 2012 De Universiteit van Amsterdam organiseert in samenwerking met Archon op 1 en 2 februari 2013 het early career event Island, mainland, coastland, hinterland. Ceramic perspectives on connectivity in the ancient Mediterranean. De keynote speakers zijn Catherine Morgan (British School in Athene) en Andrew Be van (UCL). De conferentie is vooral bedoeld om early career scholars uit Nederland en het buitenland bijeen te brengen die geinteresseerd zijn in nieuwe perspectieven op aardewerkonderzoek. We hopen daarom op een grote deelname van jonge onderzoekers in Nederland. Nederlandse PhD en RMA studenten die aangesloten zijn bij Archon kunnen credits verkrijgen voor deelname: PhD studenten voor het geven van een (geaccepteerde) paper, en

Door de werkzaamheden wordt de opslag capaciteit vergroot door door het verplaatsen van de J: drive gegevens naar een andere server. Tijdens de werkzaamheden is de J: drive niet beschikbaar. Na dit onderhoud is de capaciteit van de J: drive uitgebreid en kan de verplaatsing van bestanden tussen de P: en J: drive worden uitgevoerd. 30 November: What is Authenticity? symposium On 30 November, the symposium entitled What is Authenticity? Questions of authenticity and authentication in ethnographic museums will take place in the National Museum of Ethnology (RMV). The symposium is organized to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the museum. Several staff members of Leiden University are invited to speak. Read more... Call for Papers: Religious Materialities Workshop 2013, University of Cambridge Abstract submissions are welcomed for Religious Materialities, a one-day workshop to be held in the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge, on Saturday, May 4th 'Religious Materialities' provides an interdisciplinary forum to discuss the role of material culture in religious mediation. It will explore how material culture both informs and structures religious discourse across different social, cultural and historical contexts. The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday, January 25th Abstracts (max. 300 words, English) should be sent to religiousmaterialities@gmail.com.
