22 Hoe werkt het? Teruggekaatst zonlicht wordt vergeleken met direct invallend zonlicht. verschillende elementen geven verschillende piekjes in het gemeten spectrum. Licht wordt afgebogen naar verschillende detectoren voor verschillende golflengtegebieden. Op de grond worden data gecorrigeerd voor meetfouten en tbv co-registratie van pixels. Uitebreide calibraties van het instrument in vacuum op de grond (voor lancering) en gedurende flight.

26 Wetenschap en industrie spannen samen Voor OMI reeds intensieve afstemming tussen KNMI (PI), industrie en NSO over de performance eisen Gedurende de bouw van OMI, voorstudies voor vervolg Met KNMI en SRON als gebruikers van de data => gedetailleerde specificaties Resulterend in concreet voorstel van NSO aan ministeries Gedurende voorfasen van het programma, twee jaar lange afstemming met KNMI, SRON en NSO Resultaat: haalbare TROPOMI specificatie Op het randje van wat technisch mogelijk is mei 2011: formele Preliminary Design Review

27 Resultaat: Sentinel 5 Precursor missie Zomer 2008: Nederland (EZ, OC&W, V&W, VROM) besluit TROPOMI te ontwikkelen Deel van het instrument en deel van dataverwerking t/m 2019 PI and co-pi: KNMI & SRON November 2008: ESA ministerconferentie besluit: Dedicated missie voor TROPOMI / Lancering in 2014/2015 ESA betaalt tevens de helft van het instrument NL en ESA deel TROPOMI: onder leiding van Dutch Space met TNO, KNMI, SRON Opdrachtgevers: Netherlands Space Office (NSO) & European Space Agency (ESA) 2011: Engeland en Duitsland in competitie voor de satelliet
