3 Voorwoord / Preface Kunsthal KAdE heeft culturele ambities die niet alleen de stadsgrenzen, maar regelmatig ook de nationale grenzen overschrijden. Kunsthal KAdE past in een lijn die in 1957 door de toenmalige burgemeester Hermen Molendijk is ingezet. Met de opdracht voor de bouw van een tentoonstellingspaviljoen naar het ontwerp van de vernieuwende architect Gerrit Rietveld, begon hij de traditie van hedendaagse beeldende kunst in Amersfoort. Het paste helemaal in het optimistische vooruitgangsdenken van die tijd. We zijn nu meer dan een halve eeuw verder en we zijn uitgegroeid tot een stad met een bloeiend economisch en cultureel klimaat. In zo n stad hoort een instelling als Kunsthal KAdE thuis. Het is een plek waar de actuele beeldende kunst op de voet wordt gevolgd en van overal op de wereld naar ons toe wordt gehaald. Geworteld in Amersfoort, maar met de blik naar buiten. En opnieuw in een bijzonder gebouw, van de vernieuwende architecten Neutelings Riedijk. Lucas Bolsius Burgemeester van Amersfoort Kunsthal KAdE is an organisation whose cultural ambitions transcend not just the immediate locality, but frequently even national borders. Kunsthal KAdE is a logical consequence of the policy line instituted in 1957 by the then mayor, Hermen Molendijk. When he commissioned the construction of an exhibition space designed by avant-garde architect Gerrit Rietveld, Molendijk was no doubt inspired by the optimistic, go-ahead spirit of the post-war period. But by doing so he launched a lasting tradition of contemporary art in Amersfoort. Now, over half a century later, Amersfoort has grown into a flourishing centre of economic and cultural activity: the kind of town in which an organisation like Kunsthal KAdE is entirely at home. An institution that keeps track of cutting-edge developments around the world and brings them back for the delectation of its public. Rooted in Amersfoort but with a global outlook. 4 6 jaar Kunsthal KAdE, een dynamische reis Martin & Inge Riebeek, Imagine Being There International, 2008, aangekocht door Stichting Amersfoort in C ter gelegenheid van de oprichting van Kunsthal KAdE. De Japanse kunstenaar Shinji Ohmaki gaat in september 2013 in een winkel in Amersfoort op zoek naar een goed vergiet. Het is een zorgvuldig proces. Koken (eten) is belangrijk voor Japanners. En omdat Shinji samen met nog drie kunstenaars iets meer dan een week in een appartement in Amersfoort zal wonen, is goed keukengerei onontbeerlijk. Ohmaki strooit die week samen met zijn assistent met engelengeduld pigmenten patronen op een tapijt van vijf bij vijf meter. Gedisciplineerd en zeer precies. Een andere kunstenaar - Ataru Sato - blijft die week twee nachten lang opgesloten in Kunsthal KAdE. Hij wil in alle rust zonder de hectiek van de opbouw doortekenen aan zijn zestien meter lange werk op de achterwand van de benedenverdieping van KAdE. De inrichting van de tentoonstelling Now Japan in het najaar van 2013 is intensief en bijzonder. Naast Ohmaki en Sato zijn die weken ook Kengo Kito, Junko Kido, Toshihiko Mitsuya, de jonge vrijbuiters van CHIMµPOM en Teppei Kaneuji hun werken in situ aan het installeren. Een jaar eerder was er een soortgelijk proces. Bij de tentoonstelling Who More Sc-Fi Than Us? kwamen elf kunstenaars uit alle hoeken van de Cariben naar Amersfoort om hun werken te plaatsen. Het jaar daarvoor bouwden acht kunstenaars een speciaal landschap langs een Märklin-spoorbaan. Dit is wat wij voor ogen hadden bij het opzetten van Kunsthal KAdE: een ruimte waar bijzondere projecten van in Nederland (vrijwel) onbekende kunstenaars gerealiseerd worden. Projecten waarin de verbeelding een belangrijk element is en de primaire ervaring met beeldende kunst centraal staat, met daarnaast een wezenlijke inhoudelijke focus (bij Now Japan was dat onder meer de manier waarop beeldend kunstenaars reflecteren op de driedubbele ramp in Fukushima). In al haar complexiteit is Now Japan een goed voorbeeld geworden van een typisch KAdE project. De kiem voor Kunsthal KAdE werd rond 2003 gelegd bij de ontwikkeling van de plannen voor het nieuwe gebouw van de Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) aan het Smallepad, direct naast de middeleeuwse Koppelpoort. In het majestueuze kantoorgebouw voor 300 rijksambtenaren en een grote gespecialiseerde bibliotheek op het gebied van archeologie en monumenten, moest ook een nieuwe gemeentelijke tentoonstellingsfaciliteit komen. Deze was bedoeld als opvolger van De Zonnehof, de expositieruimte in het fameuze paviljoen van architect Gerrit Rietveld, dat toenmalig Burgemeester Hermen Molendijk in 1959 liet bouwen, zodat moderne kunst in Amersfoort een plek zou krijgen. Molendijk vond dat de gemeente het culturele leven diende te stimuleren. Ruim vijftig jaar later was het paviljoen van Rietveld op. Het lekte, het tochtte, het was niet te klimatologiseren, het was niet goed te beveiligen, kortom het was niet meer geschikt voor hoogwaardige exposities. Een verhuizing naar een tentoonstellingsvoorziening met museale condities in het RCE-gebouw was een uitdagend vooruitzicht. Het vertrekpunt was helder, de naam was bekend KAdE -, maar er moest nog wel een meer uitgewerkt concept komen. Gerard de Kleijn, de toenmalige directeur van Stichting Amersfoort in C waartoe KAdE zou gaan behoren, vroeg mij in het voorjaar van

5 om een benchmark te schrijven en een visie op het programma voor KAdE te ontwikkelen. De belangrijkste conclusies: maak er een kunsthal van (er zijn al genoeg verzamelende instituten), pin niet vast op één leitmotiv ( alles is mogelijk ), positioneer KAdE op de nationale agenda (geworteld in Amersfoort, maar met een internationaal perspectief) en zorg dat je binnen het onderwerp dat je aanpakt altijd naar topkwaliteit streeft, naar verzamelingen, kunstenaars of collectiestukken van zo hoog mogelijk niveau. En, als onderliggende ambitie, probeer eigenwijs te programmeren, met onderwerpen en kunstenaars die elders niet of veel minder aan bod komen. Kunsthal KAdE was geboren. De reis van Kunsthal KAdE begon met een tentoonstelling die meteen de ambities helder maakte: Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, een expositie met 26 kunstenaars uit alle werelddelen, waarin een sprookjesachtige beeldtaal centraal stond. Veel van de kunstenaars hadden naam gemaakt in het galeriecircuit van Londen en New York, maar waren in Nederland niet tot nauwelijks bekend. Logisch, want de anekdotische, figuratieve beeldtaal past niet bij de focus op conceptueel en minimalistisch die sinds de jaren zeventig het Nederlandse tentoonstellingsklimaat is gaan overheersen. Bij het begin van Kunsthal KAdE was er de wens om niet met een te nadrukkelijke agenda te gaan werken, omdat al zoveel expositieruimtes met een specifieke, (inhoudelijke) agenda werken. Terugkijkend op 6 jaar KAdE is misschien toch een soort agenda te herkennen: het woord beeldend in beeldende kunst weer inhoud en gezicht geven. Kunsthal KAdE dient vanaf de start in mei 2009 meerdere doelen: exposities die voor iedereen leesbaar zijn, maar die tegelijkertijd ook uitdagend zijn voor de meer ingewijde kijker en een attractief educatief programma mogelijk maken. We pogen steeds een mix te vinden van bekende(re) namen en onbekend talent, aangevuld met uitstapjes naar kunsthistorische ijkpunten in het verleden. Zeker bij de internationale tentoonstellingsprojecten introduceren wij op deze manier regelmatig in Nederland totaal onbekende kunstenaars. Daar komt de ambitie bij om bij zoveel mogelijk tentoonstellingen speciaal gemaakte installaties en werken te realiseren, waar mogelijk ter plekke. Op deze manier is Kunsthal KAdE ook een platform voor de productie van nieuw werk. Terugkijkend op zes jaar Kunsthal KAdE, zijn vijf programmalijnen te ontdekken: grote internationale bruikleententoonstellingen rond één thema (Wonderland, ShadowDance, MärklinWorld, Move On...!), grote expositieprojecten rond één land of gebied (Who More Sci-Fi Than Us over de Cariben -, Now Japan, De Vierkantigste Rechthoek een eeuw Belgische kunst gekozen door gastcurator Tom Barman en binnenkort Brazilië), grote solotentoonstellingen (Dubossarsky & Vinogradov, Tom Claassen, Henk Visch, Charlie Roberts, Marc Mulders, Studio Makkink & Bey en in de zomer van 2015 Ryan McGinley), kleinere solopresentaties (Marcel van Eeden, Frank Halmans, Tilo Baumgärtel, Ansel Krut, Francis Upritchard, Henry Coombes) en losse projecten als Meissen SO IL (18 de eeuws porselein in eigentijdse, architecturale vitrines), Ten Years One Minutes (ca éénminuten-films), Dwelling Life of Man (fotocollectie van verzamelaar Martin Z. Margulies uit Miami) en vanlieshoutvanlieshout (5 kunstenaars die een achternaam delen). Een belangrijk moment in de geschiedenis van Kunsthal KAdE is de verhuizing van de locatie, ontworpen door architectenbureau Neutelings-Riedijk. aan het Smallepad naar het Eemhuis aan het Eemplein. KAdE wisselde daarbij van fysieke jas, maar niet van identiteit. De ruimte in het RCE-gebouw werd gekenmerkt door veel glas en licht, met een ruimtelijke opzet waarin alle zalen via open verbindingen voor één doorlopende route zorgden; in het Eemhuis domineren witte wanden en eikenhouten elementen, is het daglicht vrijwel afwezig en is het parcours opgebouwd uit meer op zichzelf staande zalen. Een andere ruimtelijkheid, een andere dynamiek, maar nog steeds alle mogelijkheden om nieuwe inzichten te geven in ontwikkelingen in de (eigentijdse) beeldende kunst. Daarnaast opereren wij als kunsthal nu in het grotere verband van het Eemhuis, tezamen met de andere bewoners Bibliotheek Eemland, Scholen in de Kunst en Archief Eemland. De meerwaarde van die context op zo n strategische plek in de stad Amersfoort is van belang voor het profiel en de lokale slagkracht van KAdE. In de afgelopen zes jaar heeft Kunsthal KAdE zich een plek verworven op de natio nale kunstagenda, met een internationale dimensie die steeds meer weerklank vindt in het veld. Met een totaal bezoekersaantal van circa over die zes jaar, is KAdE een middelgrote speler binnen de actuele kunst. Met een scholierenbereik van circa in deze periode, laat Kunsthal KAdE zien ook op educatief gebied een wezenlijke bijdrage te leveren binnen de stad Amersfoort. In 2015 kwam hier in het Eemhuis een speciale educatieruimte bij. Het accentueert de cruciale rol die wij als Kunsthal KAdE zien voor het betrekken van scholieren en jongeren bij het ervaren en inzichtelijk maken van beeldende kunst. Een stevig randprogramma zorgt voor extra context. Winkel en café zijn daarnaast wezenlijke (programmatische) onderdelen van Kunsthal KAdE en versterken de identiteit van de kunsthal. We zijn er trots op dat wij met een relatief kleine staf het overgrote deel van de tentoonstellingen zelf hebben geproduceerd. Het KAdE Team zou echter niet kunnen functioneren zonder de ondersteuning van de vrijwilligers. Zij bemannen de kassa en de shop, houden toezicht op zaal en assisteren bij de op- en afbouw van tentoonstellingen. Bij iedere tentoonstelling verdiepen zij zich in de kunstenaars en thema s van het moment, zodat ze op zaal aanspreekbaar zijn over de inhoud van de expositie. Zonder vrijwilligers kan Kunsthal KAdE niet open voor het publiek. Vanzelfsprekend is Kunsthal KAdE ook alle fondsen en sponsoren zeer erkentelijk. Hun financiële steun maakt de projecten mogelijk. Op pagina 203 en 204 staan ze allemaal vermeld. De bedrijven Yokogawa Europe BV en De Amersfoortse Verzekeringen hebben als vierjarige hoofdsponsor een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan de start van Kunsthal KAdE. Daarnaast zijn alle galeries, musea en bruikleengevers van belang, die zo genereus mee hebben gewerkt aan het realiseren van onze projecten. Hun namen staan op pagina 204. Vanaf het begin hebben ook de Vrienden ons met hun jaarlijkse bijdrage ondersteund. Dit boek is mede met hun steun tot stand gekomen. Een speciale vermelding is op zijn plaats voor de Gemeente Amersfoort en de opeenvolgende colleges, wethouders en gemeenteraden, die het belang van Kunsthal KAdE voor het culturele leven in de stad zien en de oprichting, ondersteuning en latere verhuizing naar het Eemhuis mogelijk maakten en maken. Kunsthal KAdE staat museaal niet alleen in de stad Amersfoort. Het functioneert onder de koepelorganisatie Amersfoort in C, waartoe ook Museum Flehite, het Mondriaanhuis en architectuurcentrum FASadE behoren. De achtereenvolgende directeuren Gerard de Kleijn, Marco van Vulpen en Paul Baltus hebben steeds geloofd in het programma van Kunsthal KAdE en daar de ruimte en goede condities voor geschapen. Het bestuur van Amersfoort in C met als voorzitters Kees Spaan en René van Zanten voorzag in de kaders. Na 6 jaar kijken wij als Kunsthal KAdE tevreden terug op een mooie waaier aan tentoonstellingen, waarin esthetiek, beleving, verdieping en reflectie hand in hand zijn gegaan. We kijken met vertrouwen naar de toekomst, maar beseffen ons dat die toekomst kwetsbaar is, met teruglopende budgetten voor cultuur en grote uitdagingen binnen stad en politiek. Het belang van Vrienden is daarmee groot, zoals ook het draagvlak binnen de stad voor ons van groot belang is. Voor de toekomst hopen wij ook het particuliere mecenaat nog meer aan ons te binden. Zodat we de uitdagende, eigenwijze en ambitieuze projecten kunnen blijven maken, waar we de afgelopen zes jaar met zoveel plezier aan hebben gewerkt. 6 Six years of Kunsthal KAdE, an exciting ride In September 2013, Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki went shopping in Amersfoort. He was looking for a good colander and he took his time over it. Cooking (and eating) is important to the Japanese. And because Shinji was going to occupy a self-catering apartment in Amersfoort with three other artists for over a week, proper kitchen utensils were essential. Ohmaki and his assistant spent that week creating patterns of sprinkled pigments on a five by five-metre carpet. It was a highly disciplined and precise process requiring the patience of a saint. In the course of that week, another artist Ataru Sato spent two entire nights shut up in Kunsthal KAdE. He wanted to escape the hectic daytime activity of the exhibition installation and work without disturbance on the sixteen-metre-long drawing he was creating on the rear wall of KAdE s ground-floor gallery. The installation of the Now Japan exhibition in autumn 2013 was a demanding and memorable period. Ohmaki and Sato were not working alone. Kengo Kito, Junko Kido, Toshihiko Mitsuya, the enfants terribles of CHIMµPOM and Teppei Kaneuji were also active in situ during those weeks. A year earlier there had been a similar period in the run-up to the Who More Sci-Fi Than Us? exhibition, when eleven artists from all over the Caribbean came to Amersfoort to install their works. And the year before that, eight artists had created special landscape settings for a Märklin model railway track. This is exactly what we had in mind when we set up Kunsthal KAdE: a space where unique projects could be realised by artists completely or almost unknown in the Netherlands. Projects in which imagination would be a major element and the primary focus would be the experience of visual art, albeit with a subordinate focus on content. In the case of Now Japan, one such secondary focus was on the way visual artists in Japan were reflecting on the multiple disaster at Fukushima. Now Japan is therefore a good example of a typical KAdE project. The idea of Kunsthal KAdE took root during the development of plans for a new headquarters building for the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands on Amersfoort s Smallepad, right next to the town s medieval Koppelpoort gateway. The majestic building was designed to accommodate 300 central government officials and a major specialist library in the field of archaeology and the built heritage. But it was also to house a new exhibition facility. This was required to replace De Zonnehof: a famous pavilion designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld and built in 1959 under the aegis of the town s then mayor, Hermen Molendijk. Inspired by Molendijk s belief that the municipality had a duty to stimulate cultural activity in the town, De Zonnehof was intended specifically as an exhibition space for modern and contemporary art. Half a century on, however, Rietveld s pavilion was on its last legs. Climate control was impossible in the leaky, draught-ridden building and the security of works could not be guaranteed. In short, it was no longer an appropriate place for high-quality exhibitions. A switch to an exhibition venue offering proper museum-standard conditions inside the new Cultural Heritage Agency headquarters was a thrilling prospect. The basic concept was clear and the name KAdE had already been decided, but the idea still needed elaboration. In spring 2007, Gerard de Kleijn the then director of the Amersfoort in C Foundation (of which KAdE was to be a part) asked me to draft a benchmark document and to develop a vision concerning KAdE s future programming. The main conclusions were that KAdE should be an exhibition venue, not a collecting institution (there were plenty of those already); there should be no set theme ( everything goes ); KAdE should operate as part of the national art scene (rooted in Amersfoort, but with an international outlook); and it should unfailingly aspire to top-quality project implementation, seeking to attract collections, artists and objects of the highest possible merit. Furthermore, its underlying ambition should be to programme in an off-beat way, presenting topics and artists rarely if ever seen elsewhere in the Netherlands. Kunsthal KAdE was born. Kunsthal KAdE s career kicked off with an exhibition that immediately demonstrated its ambitions: Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass featured 26 artists from every corner of the world, all of whom employed a fairytale visual idiom. Many of the participants had already made their names on the gallery circuits of London and New York but were still virtually or entirely unknown in the Netherlands. This was hardly surprising, since the anecdotal, figurative visual idioms they employed were completely out of tune with the focus on conceptual and minimalist art that had dominated thinking in the Dutch exhibition world ever since the 1970s. When Kunsthal KAdE was launched, the intention was to distinguish it from the majority of other exhibition venues by avoiding any set agenda in terms of style or content. In retrospect, however, some sort of agenda has perhaps emerged from KAdE s programming over the last six years: namely, to restore sense and status to the word visual in the term visual art. Ever since its opening in May 2009, Kunsthal KAdE has been intended to serve several different purposes: its exhibitions were to be legible to the uninitiated, but nevertheless challenging for visitors with greater specialist knowledge, and they were also to provide the basis for an attractive programme of educational activities. We have constantly aimed to achieve a mix of relatively established names and unknown talent, supplemented by excursions to key points in art history. Particularly in the case of international exhibition projects, we have regularly included artists who were completely unknown in the Netherlands. In addition, we have tried to ensure that, wherever possible, exhibitions included purpose-made installations and works, preferably created in situ. Consequently, Kunsthal KAdE has also become a place for the production of new work. Looking back over these first six years of exhibitions at Kunsthal KAdE, certain trends are apparent in our programming: major international exhibitions of loan items on a single theme ( Wonderland, ShadowDance, MärklinWorld, Move On ), major exhibition projects focusing on a single country or region ( Who More Sci-Fi Than Us? on the Caribbean, Now Japan, The Squarest Rectangle a century of Belgian art selected by guest curator Tom Barman and, coming soon, Brazil ), major solo exhibitions (Dubossarsky & Vinogradov, Tom Claassen, Henk Visch, Charlie Roberts, Marc Mulders, Studio Makkink & Bey and, this summer, Ryan McGinley), smaller solo shows (Marcel van Eeden, Frank Halmans, Tilo Baumgärtel, Ansel Krut, Francis Upritchard, and Henry Coombes) and miscellaneous projects like Meissen SO IL (18 th -century porcelain in modern architectural showcases), Ten Years of One Minutes (around 1000 one-minute videos), The Dwelling Life of Man (photographs from the Martin Z. Margulies Collection in Miami) and vanlieshoutvanlieshout (5 artists sharing the same surname). The recent move from the Smallepad building to the Eemhuis, on Amersfoort s Eemplein, designed by the Dutch architecture firm Neutelings-Riedijk, was an important milestone in the history of Kunsthal KAdE. The exhibition space has changed its physical envelope, but not its identity. Whereas its previous premises featured an abundance of glass and light, with an open-plan design that linked all the exhibition areas together to form a single continuous visitor route, the new Eemhuis interior is dominated by white walls and oak detailing, with an almost complete absence of natural light and a lay-out composed 10 11

7 of separate galleries: a very different spatial feel and dynamic, but still every opportunity to provide new insights into on-going developments in the visual arts. The kunsthal operates in the Eemhuis within a larger framework, together with Bibliotheek Eemland (library), Scholen in de Kunst (school for amature arts) and Archief Eemland (archive). The extra potential of this context in a vital part of the city is strategically important for the profile of Kunsthal KAdE. Over the last six years, Kunsthal KAdE has won a place on the national art agenda, with an international dimension that is attracting a growing response in the field. With visitor numbers totalling around 175,000 over the whole period, KAdE is a medium-sized player on the contemporary art scene. Attracting around 15,000 schoolchildren in that time, it has also shown that it can make a substantial contribution to education in the town of Amersfoort. In 2015 this has been enhanced by the creation of a dedicated space for education in its new Eemhuis premises. This move underlines the crucial role that we believe Kunsthal KAdE can play in offering school classes and young people generally the chance to experience and understand the visual arts. A strong programme of peripheral activities helps to place exhibitions in context and Kunsthal KAdE s in-house shop and café are also vital to its work, as well as reinforcing the identity of the exhibition venue. We are proud that, despite a relatively small staff, we have been able to produce the vast majority of our exhibitions in-house. However, the KAdE Team could not function without the support of volunteers. They man the ticket desk and shop, act as gallery attendants, and help set up and take down exhibitions. They learn about the artists and themes involved in each temporary exhibition so that they can answer questions about the content of the current show. Without volunteers, Kunsthal KAdE would not be able to open to the public. Needless to say, Kunsthal KAdE is also extremely grateful to all the funds and sponsors who have provided the necessary financial support for its projects. They are listed on pages By acting as main corporate sponsors over the first four-year period, Yokogawa Europe BV and De Amersfoortse Verzekeringen made a major contribution to the launch of Kunsthal KAdE. Important assistance was also provided by all the galleries, museums and lenders who have so generously cooperated on our projects over the last six years. Their names are listed on page 204. Kunsthal KAdE s Friends have also lent valuable support right from the start in the form of their annual subscriptions. The Municipality of Amersfoort and its successive executives, aldermen and councils deserve special mention for their recognition of the importance of Kunsthal KAdE to the cultural life of the town and for funding its establishment, operation and later relocation to the Eemhuis. Kunsthal KAdE is not the only museum-type institution in Amersfoort. It operates under the umbrella of the Amersfoort in C Foundation, which also encompasses Museum Flehite, the Mondriaanhuis and the FASadE architecture centre. Successive directors of Amersfoort in C Gerard de Kleijn, Marco van Vulpen and Paul Baltus have always believed in Kunsthal KAdE s programming and created the scope and necessary conditions for it to succeed. The board of Amersfoort in C - with chairman Kees Spaan and René van Zanten - provided the right context to operate in. After six years, we at Kunsthal KAdE look back with satisfaction on a wide range of exhibitions in which aesthetic appreciation, direct experience, deeper exploration and reflection have invariably gone hand in hand. We face the future with confidence, while at the same time recognizing the risks posed by the current decline in arts funding and major political threats at both local and national level. The current situation makes it all the more important to have the support of Friends and the wider public in the town. As time goes on, we hope to create even stronger links with private-sector patrons, so that we can continue working on the kind of challenging, offbeat, ambitious projects we have undertaken with such pleasure over the last six years. Finally, many thanks to anyone who helped to make Kunsthal KAdE a success. 8 01 Wonderland Through the Looking Glass In Wonderland werd werk bijeengebracht van kunstenaars die in een sprookjesachtige of verhalende beeldtaal werken. In Nederland waar het conceptualisme en minimalisme hoogtij viert is deze vorm van kunst erg onderbelicht. Er werden diverse speciale werken gemaakt, daaronder een wandschildering van Paul Morrison van 16 meter breed en 11 meter hoog en een grote kartonnen sculptuur van Maartje Korstanje. Bij de tentoonstelling is een catalogus verschenen. The exhibition Wonderland opening exhibition of Kunsthal KAdE brought together international artists that use fairy tale imagery in their work. Especially in The Netherlands where conceptualism and minimalism dominates this group of artists is overlooked. Paul Morrison designed a new large wall painting (16 meters wide, 11 meters high). De kunstenaars zijn geen familie (op Erik en Dirk na) en maken geen onderdeel uit van één school. Binnen de tentoonstelling waren wel meer internationaal een aantal inhoudelijke en stilistische lijnen te ontdekken. Frank Halmans made a name for himself in The Netherlands with objects that evolve around the theme house. For this presentation he focused on his drawing oeuvre. A small publication was published. Henry Coombes Henry Coombes is een jonge Schotse kunstenaar/filmer. Getoond werden sculpturen, schilderijen en werken op papier, naast zijn nieuwste film The Bedfords : een deels gefantaseerde biopic over de 19de eeuwse, Engelse kunstenaar Edwin Landseer. Bij de tentoonstelling is een catalogus verschenen. Henry Coombes is a young Scottish artist/filmer. The exhibition featured paintings, drawings, sculptures and a screening of his film The Bedfords : a partly romanticized biopic about the 19th century artist Sir Edwin Landseer. Er werd geput uit de World One Minutes (een presentatie die eerder te zien was in Beijing tijdens de Olympische Spelen) en de Train One Minutes, aangevuld met individuele keuzes. In de presentatie werd gestreefd naar een sixtijnse kapel van videobeeld, met projecties op alle wanden (zoveel mogelijk wandvullend) en op het plafond. Bij de tentoonstelling is een catalogus verschenen. An overview of ten years The One Minutes : videofilms of exactly one minute, produced in all corners of the world. Part of the exhibition was the World One Minutes, a presentation shown earlier in Beijing during the Olympics together with individual choices from the archives. Charlie Roberts is an young American artist who is picturing a generation with drawings, paintings, sculptures and an installation. 25 RETROSPECT 05 Tom Claassen Retrospectief Het eerste retrospectief van de beeldhouwer Tom Claassen in Nederland met de belangrijkste werken uit zijn oeuvre. Onderdeel van de presentatie was een veertigtal modellen voor werken in de openbare ruimte. Tom Claassen maakte speciaal vier nieuwe werken voor de tentoonstelling. Op het voorplein stond het beeld Paard (1996) dat was gebruikleend van de Gemeente Utrecht, waar het staat op het oude slachthuisterrein. Bij de expositie verscheen de multiple Yp. Bij de tentoonstelling is een kleine gratis catalogus verschenen. The first retrospective of Tom Claassen in The Netherlands. Apart from a representative selection from the oeuvre, 40 models for works in public space were shown. Tom Claassen produced four new works for the exhibition. Part of the loans was a horse normally on a square in the city of Utrecht. The multiple Yp was produced in connection with the exhibition. 29 ShadowDance Tentoonstelling over het gebruik van schaduw als beeldend middel in het werk van zowel oudere als hedendaagse kunstenaars, met (interactieve) installaties, films/video s, fotowerken en schilderijen. Onderdeel van de tentoonstelling was een schilderij van de zeventiende eeuwse meester Dirck van Baburen uit het Centraal Museum. Bij de tentoonstelling is een catalogus verschenen (uitverkocht). 39 In de Meissen-presentatie werden ca. 50 topstukken uit Engelse en Duitse privécollecties getoond in speciaal door het New Yorkse architectenbureau SO IL ontworpen vitrines. De ambities was om een andere kijkervaring te genereren: de objecten worden zoveel mogelijk solitair in driedimensionale vitrines getoond, waarbij een deel van de zijden van de piramidevormige kappen gekleurd waren en zo de blik filterden en het object door een spiegelbodem gereflecteerd werd. Eén zijde bleef altijd transparant, zodat het porselein ook direct en ongehinderd te bekijken was. Op de bovenverdieping was een overzicht van architectuurmodellen van SO IL te zien. Bij de tentoonstelling is een catalogus verschenen. Meissen SO - IL 18 de eeuws porselein in hedendaagse architectuur Ansel Krut Schilderijen/Paintings Francis Upritchard Echo Fifty pieces from private collections in Great Britain and Germany were shown in showcases purposely designed by the New York architecture firm SO IL. It was the ambition to create a new viewing experience, by placing the objects solitary in free standing showcases. The piramid-shaped, colourful tops filter the gaze, while a mirror on the bottom enhances the viewing angles. On the top floor an overview of the architectural work of SO IL was presented. Francis Upritchard, Ansel Krut, Hew Locke Francis Upritchard (sculpturen), Ansel Krut (schilderijen) en Hew Locke (wandinstallatie) zijn emerging artists die in het internationale circuit hun sporen hebben verdiend en voor het eerst op deze schaal in Nederland te zien waren. In de benedenruimtes werd een (Märklin) spoorbaan van 70 meter aangelegd, waarlangs acht kunstenaars speciaal een installatie bouwden: Krijn de Koning (NL, 1963), The Chadwicks (Jimbo Blachly, US, 1963 and Lytle Shaw, US, 1967), Friedrich Kunath (DE, 1974), Tobias Putrih (SI, 1972), Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger (CH, 1967 & 1964), Ante Timmermans (BE, 1976), Leonid Tsvetkov (US, 1980) en Rob Voerman (NL, 1966). Op de bovenverdiepingen waren foto s, objecten, schilderijen en videowerken van ruim 30 andere kunstenaars te zien. Bij de tentoonstelling is een catalogus verschenen. Forty artists present a work that shows the world as a model. In the lower galleries a Märklin-track of 70 meters long was laid out. On the track a train with camera s circled around. The images from the camera s were shown live on the exhibition wall. In the upper galeries photo s, objects, video s and paintings were shown related to the subject. A catalogue was published.
