Dutch BSC population reduction Province of North Holland is in the lead Population of greylag geese in the 20km zone around Schiphol during late summer: (based on counting in 2011 & 2012), > within 10 km zone Licences for nest treatment and lethal control in 10 km zone since 2008 Population reduction: 2011: shot, eggs treated 2012: 3000 shot, eggs treated, 5000 captured during moult period 2013: captured during moult period Long term geese control plan for Schiphol area issued Q2 2013: goal is max grey lag geese in late summer 2015 in 10 km zone and greylag geese in 20km zone.

Dutch BSC reduction of foraging possibilities Ministry of Infrastructure & Environment is in the lead in cooperation with the municipality of the Haarlemmermeer Late summer 2012: 1500 HA grain underploughed within 48h: 90% reduction of geese crossings Costs 2012: 1.3 MIO Long term contracts with farmers (6 years) Stimulation for alternative crops; R&D 2013: 1800 HA planned to be underploughed within 48h Estimated costs ,5 MIO

30 3.Dutch BSC adaptation of resting and sleeping areas Ministry of infrastructure and Environment is in the lead Large impact on spatial planning External party (Arcadis) has written a research report on the attractiveness of nature and wetlands in the Schiphol area. (6th report in 7 years) This report will be input for adjustment of the aviation law Discussion is ongoing whether the 6km zone now will be extended to the 13 km zone, especially for wetlands and lakes. Development of a mandatory bird effect researchtest for new developments

Ad hoc Bird dispersal : Falconers Incentive for use of falconers as from 2010 Fight nature with nature Impact on bird behaviour is effective but very local Also effect om (low flying) geese Intense cooperation with bird controllers 2 falconers spend 4 hours around the airport each day No direct dispersal on or around active runways Deployment of various birds of prey (duck hawk, goshawk etc.) Various methods (tricking, swooping, crossing, etc.)

Geese: research around Schiphol Study on origins and migration patterns by Bureau Waardenburg ( ) in conjunction with the province of Noord Holland 300 geese ringed and 25 geese GPS-tagged in May-June 2010 & 2011 Goal is to recognise geese patterns and routes around and over the airport Distinctive hotspots have been recognised and have the focus of counter measures

Geese: dispersal and population reduction Bird Control at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Monitoring geese flying over the airport ( ) Extended range munition (light flares) Dispersal by using falconer (especially in outlying areas) Collaboration with government bodies: 'Greylag Goose population reduction' project in conjunction with the province of Noord-Holland, municipality of Haarlemmermeer wild fauna control units, nature conservation and land managers ( ) Nest treatment Geese-hunting in 10 km zone around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol by wild fauna control units 2011: shot, eggs treated 2012: 3000 shot, eggs treated, 5000 captured during moult period 2012: first time in 7 years geese population and activity has been reduced. No incidents in spring and summer 2012.

Geese: reducing the attractiveness of grainfields Centre for Agriculture and Environment (CLM) has performed a study on adjustment of agriculture around the airport in conjunction the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment ( ) Geese & Grain Pilot summer 2011 Accelerated ploughing on 150 HA between 2 runways Less inviting for foraging geese Continuation within a larger area in future Very costly 2012: 58 farmers, more than 1200 HA have underploughed their grainfields: less geese activity over and around the airport!

Geese hazard status 2012 Incidenten met ganzen in 2012: 3 10 jan, landen 18R, grauwe ganzen op 700FT 12 jan, take-off 18L, ganzensoort onbekend, 500 FT 14 okt, landen 18R, nijlgans, in stukken gevonden op TD zone, geen melding van vlieger Geen incidenten in Q2 en Q3 Nazomer 2012: significant minder ganzenovertrek
