62 Conclusions The Venice coastland (both the city as well as the surrounding farmland) has been affected by significant land subsidence due to human activities over the last century: city: due to groundwater pumping (~0.2 m) farmland (peat soils): reclamation and ploughing (~2.0 m) VENICE: due to the importance of the city drastic and definitive measures to eliminate the anthropogenic component of the land subsidence were undertaken by the central Italian government (Special Law for Venice dated 1970) FARMLAND: due to the less visibility of the coastal farmland no measures to eliminate the anthropogenic component of the land subsidence were undertaken by the central Italian government. Only temporary solutions were implemented by the local reclamation authority (budget constraint). Here anthropogenic land subsidence will end when the peat layer will be totally disappeared Land subsidence in the Venice coastland Pietro Teatini
