Conclusions 1 Half of the prospective studies show at least one or more positive associations between R/S and depression over time Religious attendance: most common measure best effect as single measure although still 56% NS Religious distress is more often associated with more depression over time: 56%
Excellent studies: more contrasting results (and no NS!) Conclusions 2 Region, age, race and gender do not affect the results Results are less positive for samples of patients with a physical condition Linear regression models may produce more conservative results (more NS)
Discussion The pattern of results contains many significant findings BUT the findings can be Modest A selection Due to multiple comparisons R/S is not a major determinant of depression for all, but reflects a relevant existential resource for some Should we really assume R/S to be a determinant of depression? R/S as ultimate outcome?
