Buitenlandexcursie 2016: London Voorwoord van de voorzitter My dearest companions, If you are reading this at the moment I envisioned you doing so, we are just a few short days away from embarking on what could be one of the greatest weekends of your life, for we will be spending it in the one country that dares call itself great, secure in the conviction that it will not disappoint. The gorgeous land of Albion awaits us. Soon we will be plunging into her capital: a city one can claim to have been the centre of the world with complete verisimilitude, and not a trace of hyperbole. Only ancient Rome can be considered of even comparable importance to the history of our kind. Here, in the metropolis of London, Shakespeare triumphed; Newton unravelled the mysteries of the Universe; Brunel instigated the Industrial Revolution; Darwin explained the miracle of life; Churchill beat back the Nazis as Turing invented the computer; and finally Tim Berners-Lee came up with the internet, which seemed like a good idea at the time. I wish you all a weekend during which new friendships form and old ones develop, hope is kindled and idealism burns the brighter. We are not going to London as part of an organisation which is simply about fun, but if anything that means you deserve it all the more. So let that be what this weekend is about: having a whale of a time, so that we may return home with renewed energy and British determination (i.e. Great). Algemene informatie: Hostel: Smart Hyde Park View Hostel, 16 Leinster Terrace, London. Het ligt ten noorden van de Kensington Gardens, tussen metrostations Queensway en Lancaster Gate in. Nederlandse ambassade: 38 Hyde Park Gate, +44 (20) 7590 3200 Reizen in Londen: Londen is een grote stad. Afstanden reis je daarom het makkelijkst met de metrolijnen. De metro in Londen is niet duur, maar hij rijdt wel snel en vaak; zelden hoef je langer dan 4 minuten te wachten. Je reist in het openbaar vervoer (metro, bus, boot) met je Oyster Card. De Oyster Card werkt als een OV-chipkaart. Het makkelijkst laad je het op in de metrostations. Een plattegrond van de metro zit op de voorkant van dit boekje. Naast het openbaar vervoer zijn ook taxi s, de black cabs, beschikbaar. Ze zijn vrij als het lampje bovenop de auto brandt en je kan ze aanhouden door je hand op te steken. Bagage: Je mag naast je handbagage een grote koffer, twee medium koffers of drie kleine tassen meenemen, als het totaalgewicht niet meer bedraagt dan 20 kilo.
Programma: onder voorbehoud Donderdag 17 oktober: 21:30 Verzamelen op Rotterdam Centraal voor de Starbucks bij Spoor 1/Stadskant. Om 21.50 lopen we naar de Flixbushalte, Conradstraat, perron HH. 22.15 Vertrek van de bus. Vrijdag 18 oktober: 07.30 Aankomst in Londen, station Victoria. Vanaf hier gaan we naar het Hostel. Inchecken in hostel, droppen bagage en opfrissen. 08.30 We komen aan in het hostel. Dagstart waarin we het programma van de dag doornemen. Hierna is er vrije tijd tot 13.00 uur. 13.00 We lopen de Alternative Tour. De start hiervan is rond Liverpool Station. Details geven we aan bij de dagstart. 14.30 Vrije tijd 18.30 Diner bij Tai Buffet London (86 Uxbridge Road, metro: Shepherds Bush) 20.30 Aansluitend aan het diner hebben we een meetup met de Animal Welfare Party 22.00 Vrije tijd Zaterdag 19 oktober: 09.00: Dagstart 09.30: Vertrek naar Canvas Cafe 10.30: Meetup met World Animal Protection in The Canvas Cafe, 42 Hanbury St (metro: Liverpool Street of Aldgate East). 12.00: Lunch op eigen initiatief bij het Canvas Cafe 13.00: Excursie bij de Houses of Parliament, Westminster, metro: Westminster. Aansluitend is er vrije tijd 18.30 Diner bij Farmacy, 74 Westbourne Grove, metro: Bayswater of Royal Oak. Aansluitend vrije tijd.
Zondag 20 oktober: Ochtend: vrije tijd om te ontbijten, te hardlopen, uit te slapen, enz. Richard bezoekt de kerkdienst van St. Paul s Cathedral. Wil je deze kerk gratis van binnen zien, tag along. Vergeet ook niet je bagage op te ruimen. We zullen het hostel vragen of we onze bagage daar op eigen risico mogen achterlaten tijdens de dag. 09.00: Dagstart. Aansluitend is er vrije tijd tot de middag. 13.00: We doen een activiteit. Wat het is weten we nog niet. 17.30: Diner bij Tibits, 12-14 Heddon Street, metro: Piccadilly Circus of Oxford Circus 19.30: Spullen pakken in het hostel. 20.15: Vanuit het hostel vertrekken we naar Victoria Station. 21:30: De bus vertrekt naar Nederland.
