Meetinstrumenten. Test-taker attitudes of job applicants: Test Anxiety and Belief in Tests as antecedents of Fairness perceptions Bert Stronks Summary Background. The present research is consistent with the recommendations from Ryan and Ployhart (2000) to focus on pre-test measured test-taker attitudes, like test anxiety, and study them as antecedents of the post-test measured justice perceptions, from which a significant effect is expected. Following recent studies, the cognitive dimension of test anxiety has been split up in a self-referenced (SRA) and an other-referenced (ORA) facet. Also an hypothesized mediating effect of interpretation bias between ORA and justice perceptions is tested. Aim. The present study strives to contribute to existing research on test-taker attitudes. More specific are the findings from recent studies on the cognitive dimension of test anxiety linked to the line of research on justice perceptions. Furthermore, interpretation bias as explanatory mechanism is not only derived from theoretical findings, but measured with a survey. Participants, procedure and design. A survey is conducted among 775 participants in a selection assessment. In total, 254 participants completed the first part of the questionnaire and 186 participants also completed the second part of the questionnaire. To test the predictions, Pearson correlations were calculated, together with regression analyses for the four types of justice perceptions.
Measures. The questionnaire in this study is based on the Self- and Other-referenced Anxiety Questionnaire (Proost, Derous, Schreurs, Hagtvet, & De Witte, 2008), a part of the Interpretation and Judgemental Questionnaire (Voncken, Bögels, & De Vries, 2003), the justice perceptions questionnaire (Colquitt, 2001), a few items from the Test Attitude Survey (Arvey, Strickland, Drauden, & Martin, 1990; Schreurs, Derous, Proost, Notelaers, & De Witte, 2009) and the negative affect items from the PANAS (Peeters, Ponds, & Vermeeren, 1996; Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988) Results and conclusion. The predicted influence of the test-taker attitudes test anxiety (ORA) and belief in tests on justice perceptions has not been found. Equally the expected mediating role of interpretation bias has not been established, though interpretation bias proves to be negatively related to justice perceptions. Furthermore a strong negative influence of negative affect on justice perceptions was found. These complex relations between test-taker attitudes, more specific self- and other-referenced anxiety, interpretation bias, negative affect and justice perceptions, encourage further research.
