Na, als marinier in het zonnige Curaao gediend te hebben, trok een minder regenachtig klimaat dan het Nederlandse me aan en ben ik, in 1969, als 23-jarige Rotterdammer, naar Zuid Afrika gemigreerd om daar het geluk te zoeken. Ik heb er mijn (Nederlandse) vrouw, Modesta, ontmoet en onze twee kinderen, Alexander en Swetlana, zijn daar geboren. Tegenwoordig wonen we in een door muren en prikkeldraad beveiligd wooncomplex, Maroela geheten, noord van Johannesburg. Een paar jaren geleden ben ik begonnen om verhaaltjes te schrijven betreffende mijn wedervaren. Dikwijls doe ik dat in mijn study, onder het toeziend oog van een bobbejaan.
