Spin-off from the Royal visit As most of you have noticed, the past few weeks were colored orange, the highlight being the official visit of Their Royal Highnesses Prince Willem- Alexander and Princess Máxima to Vietnam. Some of you may even have had the chance to speak to them in person. It was a great opportunity for companies and people alike to network. And let s not forget the various festivities that were organized to celebrate Koninginnedag - Queensday. You will find more stories and pictures of all these events in this issue of Double Dutch. The Dutch community in Vietnam keeps getting bigger and bigger. A lot of new families and couples have moved to Vietnam in the past couple of months, as you can read in our social section. But sadly we also have to say goodbye to some people. At Double Dutch, we had to say goodbye to our two esteemed editors, Renske and Hanneke, who are leaving Vietnam; we would like to thank them for their great contributions and inputs to the magazine and we wish them and their families all the best in their new hometown! Furthermore, we would hereby also like to take the opportunity to introduce the new editors-team, starring Violette, Felicia, Willemien, Katrien and Tessa, with the two latter being newbies in the city: what better way to integrate then to join the Double Dutch team! Just before summer holiday starts and people will go back to the Netherlands to visit their family and friends, we would like to remind you that the elections for the new DBAV Board are coming up: if you feel you have some time to spare and are able to make some sensible contributions, why not nominate yourself for a position in the new DBAV Board? 5 from the vice chairman Christian Dutilh Vice Chairman and Acting Chairman Dear members and friends, Already more than 3 months we are in the year of the Cat and so far our orange Of course the absolute highlight was the visit of the Royal Highnesses Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima in March, which was a tremendous success and a stimulating boost for Dutch business in Vietnam. In addition the reception on 30 March held in the Independence Palace was something unique and to remember for all those who joined. The celebrations that followed in April were both cheerful and colorful events: the Queensparty 2011 took place in Flow Restaurant and for our next generation the Kinderkoninginnedag (Children s queensday) was held traditionally in An Phu. board Vice Chairman Christian Dutilh Vice Chairman Arjan Brinks Treasurer Hielke Booijink Board member Willemien Bosch I think we all agree that in order to stimulate progress we must sometimes break with tradition. Therefore the traditionally held 3rd Thursday Dutch Drinks took place in May on FRIDAY 20 May in Vasco s! And for all those traveling to Hanoi occasionally, do not forget to meet up with your fellow countrymen on the Dutch Drinks every 2nd Thursday of the month (see for the address info). Furthermore for the month of May, we had a business lunch on 24th. With regards to the DBAV Board, earlier this year Ms. Kirsten Theuns left Vietnam and in April Mr. Jos Langes has resigned as Chairman due to increasing business activities for his company. We thank him for his efforts during his years as Board member and Chairman. Looking at the year(s) ahead, the DBAV would welcome a fresh wind and we invite all those interested to join the DBAV Board for next year, both DBAV as well as NLV members can contact us before the AGM (Annual General Meeting) on 15 June. 6 my company The visit of Princess Máxima and the Dutch economic delegation Leading example of creating shared value Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Kinh Luan - PR Manager - FrieslandCampina Vietnam With a remarkable contribution to Vietnam and to the sustainable development of dairy farming in Vietnam, Dutch Lady (FrieslandCampina Vietnam) has been visited by Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands, accompanied by the Dutch Minister for Agriculture and Foreign Trade Henk Bleker, plus a business delegation, on Wednesday 30 March The visit was a part of the official tour of Vietnam being undertaken by the royal couple and the economic delegation to strengthen trade relations between the Netherlands and Vietnam, from 28 to 31 March During the visit, the guests were given a tour to the Dutch Lady s demonstration farm, in which thousands of Vietnamese farmers have been supporting with a wide range of training, about milking, hygiene, animal health, farm management etc. for their sustainable farming development, since 1995 by Dutch Lady. The Princess Máxima also spent her time with the students of Vo Thi Sau School in Binh Phuoc province, one of the six schools established by the Den Dom Dom (Firefly Light) Study Promotion, initiated by Dutch Lady since 2002 in order to improve the studying conditions in remote areas across Vietnam. Via Den Dom Dom, Dutch Lady has also awarded over 20,000 scholarships to help underprivileged students overcome their difficulties and strive for a better future. Also in attendance at the visit, Mr. Vu Minh Sang - Chairman of Binh Duong People s Committee expressed his regards for the contributions made over the past 15 years by FrieslandCampina Vietnam, an exemplary jointventure enterprise which represented the cooperation between the Netherlands and Vietnam in the interest of Binh Duong Province in particular and Vietnam in general. 7 MY company Máxima and Bleker at official opening new warehouse Gabor Fluit, General Director De Heus Vietnam 2011 is a special year for De Heus. This animal feed company celebrates its 100 year anniversary, a reason to arrange a number of local and international celebrations. Next to that, De Heus hopes to receive its Royal status this year as well. For that reason it was extra special that HRH Princess Máxima visited the De Heus feed mill in Binh Duong, 60 km North of Saigon. We invited her and the delegation led by Minister of Agriculture Henk Bleker to visit our feed mill and to open a new raw material warehouse at the site. Of course this was a great opportunity for us to present ourselves to the Dutch business delegation, but especially also to some high ranking people within the Vietnamese Government. So as you can imagine, Wednesday was an exciting day for us! Until the last day before the visit, we were busy with some construction and cleaning at the site. When the delegation arrived, it was important for us to welcome the Dutch delegation in general and HRH Princess Máxima and Bleker in particular. But next to that we also had to take good care of the Vietnamese government officials. For that reason I decided to do my opening speech in a combination of English and Vietnamese, which was a big surprise for some people in the delegation. The positive spirit and the attention in the local media have made this visit and the economic mission a great event for De Heus and I believe also for the other Dutch companies that were involved. I do hope that the Prince and the Princess will come back to Vietnam once they have become King and Queen! De Heus In its 100 year existence, De Heus has been growing and developing especially in the past 15 years. Until the mid-90 s, De Heus was a regional animal feed producer in The Netherlands, but in the past years we started new activities in a number of countries. We have strong local presence in The Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Egypt, Ethiopia, South Africa, China and since 2 years Vietnam. The delegation consisted of high ranking Dutch officials who are top water management advisors to the Prime Minister of Vietnam. This mission has lead to exposure of Dutch commitment and displayed the achievements of co-operation with Vietnam in a number of prestigious sectors like ports, industry and water management. For a company like Royal Haskoning, already working in Vietnam since the mid eighties, such a mission is not really required to be introduced to the Vietnamese authorities and private sector anymore. However, such a high level delegation enables parties from both the Dutch and Vietnamese sides focusing on getting agreements and memoranda of understandings signed just at that particular moment of the visit. And they have been surely signed highlighting the spirit and commitment of both the countries. For Royal Haskoning particularly the high level workshop for the Mekong Delta, headed by ex-minister of Agriculture and Fishery Prof. Veerman was a highlight. As well as the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ho Chi Minh Peoples Committee and the Deputy Major of the City of Rotterdam Mrs. van Huffelen. This signals a paving of the way forward and as such enabling a good business environment in Vietnam for Dutch companies like Royal Haskoning. A large Dutch business community of which some already have business in Vietnam accompanied the mission. By others it was seen as an occasion to explore the opportunities Vietnam has to offer for the Dutch business sector. Getting to know the companies who show their first interest in Vietnam is very important in enhancing innovation. To that end the latter has been an interesting additional spin-off of the mission for Royal Haskoning. DOUBLE DUTCH

8 dutch mission in vietnam A cooperative spirit between NL and Vietnam Steven Collet - Deputy Chief of Mission - Dutch Embassy Hanoi Never in the history of our two countries has such a wealth of mutual interests, shared experience, and cooperative spirit been gathered together under one roof. These words, expressed by the Prince of Orange during the networking dinner in Hanoi on 29 March, reflect very well the potential of the economic mission, including 100 Dutch entrepreneurs, which accompanied the official visit of our Crown Prince and Princess Máxima to Vietnam. Has this potential been met? We look back at very successful visit for five reasons: Opening many doors Focussing on water, agriculture, transport and logistics, maritime industry and oil and gas, with the finance emerging as a sixth crosscutting sector, this mission included all which Vietnam and the Netherlands have in common as delta s and gateways. This must be the reason why our ministers and businesses where received by the top leadership and all relevant ministers with great dedication, allowing us to present what the Dutch have on offer, to forge new partnerships and to raise specific concerns on issues as level playing field and market access for our companies. Economic diplomacy is at the core of our business. Accelerating deals Over 20 contracts were signed, both between companies as well as with the government. Most of these deals were already in the making. The mission provided the momentum to seal the deal, many witnessed by our Royal Highnesses and the minister for Agriculture and Foreign Trade, Henk Bleker. Platform for new opportunities The economic mission formed a platform for identifying new business opportunities. There was an extensive match-making programme in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, providing new business contacts for 50 companies. We managed to organise seven seminars, mostly together with our Vietnamese counterparts, triggering decision makers and key industry players to attend. Seminars on opportunities in the rapidly emerging oil and gas sector, on flood control, and on improving the livestock production chain are some examples. Insight in doing business in VN The opening seminar in Hanoi and a field trip to Dutch companies in Binh Duong province presented practical experience with running a company to both the 30 newcomers in the mission and to the old-timers, as a refresher. Deepening Relations The mission deepened existing relations and established many more new ones. The various networking events connected businessmen and women, and officials from both countries. On the whole, this mission provided an enormous boost to the already very strong bilateral ties between the Netherlands and Vietnam, putting mutually profitable cooperation at centre stage. The Vietnamese government already considers us as their preferred partner on water management in the context of climate change adaptation and is now increasingly eager to also benefit from Dutch innovative and sustainable solutions in other fields for its further development. This enables us to forge partnerships with Dutch investors, introducing global standards for responsible entrepreneurship that, in the words of our Crown Prince, should fit Vietnam s ambitions like a glove. So there s no time to sit back and relax. Now is the moment to bring in the harvest of this mission in our continued joint effort with Dutch companies and our Vietnamese counterparts. I am ready to play my part, taking over from Monique Bennema as economic and commercial attaché, after her departure this summer. We will refocus our team to economic cooperation. I wish to thank Monique for her tireless dedication to promote Dutch business in Vietnam over the past four years. By building the foundations for the economic mission last March, she was key to its success. 10 my company Dutch Royal visit to Unilever Vietnam On 31 March 2011, Unilever Vietnam had the honour to welcome Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima of the Netherlands to its Head Office in Ho Chi Minh City, during their official visit to Vietnam with over 80 companies in an economic mission led by the Netherlands Minister for Agriculture and Foreign Trade Dr. Henk Bleker. The visit to Unilever Vietnam took place in the context of a Business Leaders round table on Maximizing profits through responsible entrepreneurship, co-organised by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Vietnam with Unilever Vietnam hosting the venue for the event. The Business Leaders discussion focused on such key questions as: how can entrepreneurs ensure people, planet and profit at the heart of their business; how can the CSR help maximizing profits; what are opportunities and challenges for using CSR in Vietnam situation. During the tour of Unilever Vietnam Head Office, Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima were really impressed by the hospitality and warm welcome of Unilever Vietnam s Board of Management and employees, and enjoyed an Asian fusion lunch menu, served by the Chefs of Unilever Food Solutions Vietnam s Culinary Studio. Unilever Vietnam Unilever started operation in Vietnam in 1995 and has successfully become the leading Dutch investor in Vietnam, making substantial contributions to Vietnam s socioeconomic development through its strong business performance and outstanding corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments. Unilever Vietnam has been honoured by the Government of Vietnam with the prestigious 1st rank Labour medal in recognition of its leading role in the overall development of the country. at the reception Meeting with the Prince of Orange Hans Put Hetty (left) and Hans Put in conversation with ZKH Prince Willem-Alexander Wednesday night, March 30th 2011, was a special night. A night we will not forget easily! We knew that there was a possibility that we could meet HRH the Prince of Orange and HRH Princess Máxima and we indeed did! We were walking over the red carpet entering the Reunification Palace in HCMC. This building on its own has a unique, official status to it. Inside we met a lot of friends from the Dutch expat community, everybody was very well dressed and looked beautiful. There was a kind of tension in the air and even though we all have visited a lot of official receptions, this time it was slightly different. At one point the tension was rising as our Crown Prince and Princess Máxima were entering the room where we all were. You could feel it in the air, and people whispering There they are, look (ladies) what is she wearing, what color is the dress, I like her hair, etc. The first thing that I noticed when I saw them was that they both looked very relaxed, and all the people surrounding them were so tense! Then the official part begun, a lot of speeches and compliments, after which everybody started to mingle. A lot of people tried to get near to his Royal Highness and Princess Máxima. We, Hetty and I, where standing in the crowd talking with some of my colleagues. At some moment suddenly his Royal Highness was just behind us. At that very moment I turned around and stood eye too eye with him. I introduced myself Hello I am Hans Put, welcome to HCMC! We shook hands and he said Nice to meet you, what are you doing here in Vietnam?, I told him that I was working for Vitens Evides International, and he replies So you work on water systems, I know Vitens Evides quite well. At that moment the ice was broken, I introduced my wife Hetty and the colleagues. It was remarkable how well he was informed. Suddenly he asked, Mr. Put on the stage previously were some water companies from the Mekong Delta to sign some MOUE with Vitens Evides International, could you tell me what it was about? Then Hetty says Oh I thought that I was the only one who missed that. HRH Willem-Alexander started to laugh, No sometimes I miss some things too. I then went on to explain what the MOUE were about and he thanked me for this conversation. It was a very pleasant conversation we had together. So for my wife and me, Wednesday night March was a night we will never forget! 10 DOUBLE DUTCH

11 new company in town Tasty Dutch Design by Dobla recently opened a stateof-the-art production facility in Vung Tau, Vietnam. We started in 1955 as a wholesale distributor of bakery products and have only grown since then. With factories in The Netherlands, Belgium, the USA and now also Asia we are the world largest producer of Chocolate decorations, cups and toppings. It has only been three years ago that we first introduced a complete new range the Chef s Collection. These partially hand-made products have grown in popularity and are being used by pastry chefs, bakery shops, but also cake and desserts producers worldwide. Management made a clear decision this is where our focus needs to be to stay ahead of the competition and so, in 2009, the Innovation Center was a fact. In the Innovation Center it is all about creativity, craftsmanship and art in its purest form. The products that are being designed & developed in Heerhugowaard are being produced in Vung Tau. This factory is by far our most modern and up-to-date factory with regards to food safety standards. Barely 1 month after the official opening (2 april 2011) we offer a good working environment for over 50 local people. With a potential up to 400 working places in about 3 years we aim for growth, both for Dobla and the community. Together with College Wageningen and the Saigon Tourism and Hospitality College (STHC) we aim to develop the Pacific Pastry Acadamy a college where the locals are being trained into high end pastry chefs for the growing tourism & hospitality market in Vietnam. A true spin off! Basic facilities like a clean water tap, a bed to sleep in and a playground help these children to trust the world again. This is the least that we can do for such a beautiful country that will be facing a treadmill of growth in the coming years. With its first centre, in the Thao Dien compound, SmartKids offered space to 72 children (from 18 months till 6 years old), with modern facilities and qualified foreign staff. Highly recognized for its special care for children and parents, the facility soon became too small and a second facility was opened near the ISHCMC / Riverside Apartments. With a massive garden and similar quality services, Smartkids proved it was able to continue its early childhood care. Now, just before its 5th anniversary, SmartKids again replicates itself with a third and even nicer facility at Tran Ngoc Dien Street near Snap Café. SmartKids offers space to 220 children divided over the three locations. The new facility is still under construction but open for visits. Experienced staff is already recruited and being trained. In August, SmartKids Tran Ngoc Dien will start with a KIDDIES group (18 months- 3 years old) and a BIG KIDS group (3 years - 6 years). In SmartKids, special attention is given to the development of each individual child; in language, creative development, social development, emotional development, physical development, play, independence, exploring own abilities and adapting to rules and boundaries. The children at Smartkids are constantly learning, though through fun, interactive activities rather than a regimented curriculum. The Smartkids approach uses the methodologies and philosophies of Reggio Emilia, Steiner and Montessori, which are combined with the depth of experience and qualifications that Ms. Yoko and her staff bring to the centre. We are architects and urban planners using our expertise to assist local governments, universities and NGO s in developing countries to respond to the changing demands of the urbanising world. We have recently launched two new products: urban adventure races and urban cycling in Hanoi. How did you get the idea for the Urban Discovery Challenge? We did a number of projects that we can be truly proud of, but we felt the need to undertake something local and practical in the cities that we live and work in: Hanoi and Hong Kong. We fear for Asia s city s identities being lost in the modernization frenzy and want to make people more aware of the environment they live in. In Hanoi every day there is one traditional shop house being traded in for a ten-storey glass building. Increasingly ambitious urban redevelopment programmes result in a completely new urban fabric. It is not just the buildings that are lost; with it go the stories, the traditions and the unique identities of urban communities. So you started organising urban treasure hunts? Yes, the Urban Discovery Challenge really is the modern version of the good old treasure hunt. The idea is that teams of four or five people compete to find hidden checkpoints, solve clues and compete in physical challenges, whereby the only allowed method of travel is by foot or local public transportation. The Challenge is for groups from 10 up to 500 people who are in for a fun and educational experience, making it very suitable for team building, networking, company happening or as social event for a conference. We also cater for groups of friends who have something to celebrate: birthday or bachelor party. Obviously we can also design an adventure race completely customised for a company or group. We do this presently in Hanoi and are considering expanding to HCMC soon. We try to find a balance between fun & intelligence with an emphasis on local culture, architecture, traditions, art & design. Team tasks include performing a lion dance, locating sites of disappeared buildings, tai chi in the park and tasting of local food & drinks. And what about Urban Cycling? In Hanoi we also developed urban cycling tours for those who want to experience the real Hanoi. True to our Dutch cycling spirit we set off to explore Hanoi s on a bicycle and found it surprisingly easy to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the quiet life in picturesque backstreets. Here we stumbled upon temples tucked away in narrow alleys and hidden traditional courtyards, we explored green riverbanks and cycled along leafy wide boulevards with stunning French villa s. Actually, our biggest challenge was not so much to find interesting places to see, but to find good quality bikes, also suitable for the tall Dutch. In Nederland werk ik voor Friesland Campina Cheese in een team dat WCOM, het continue verbeter programma van onze organisatie, implementeert als een nieuwe manier van werken, dat wil zeggen continue op zoek naar verbetering. Sinds 3 maanden ben ik hier werkzaam voor Friesland Campina Vietnam om in 10 maanden het WCOM programma dat hier al een paar jaar draait verder te ontwikkelen en de organisatie voor te bereiden om het zelfstandig te kunnen handhaven. Het mooie van deze uitwisseling is dat je veel van elkaar kunt leren, hetzelfde programma maar in een heel verschillende cultuur. Waar woonde je voorheen? In Gorredijk, vlakbij sportstad Heerenveen. Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? Op zijn minst bijzonder te noemen, het verkeer is dramatisch! De service gerichtheid is uniek, daar kunnen we in Nederland wat van leren. Mijn collega s zijn geweldig om mee te werken. Het enthousiasme en de wil om vooruit komen is hier erg sterk aanwezig en dat motiveert mij enorm. Wat mis je het meest uit Nederland? Mijn hondje Sem, de kwekkeboom kroket, het dagelijkse praatje op straat, de frisse lucht in Fryslan en last but not least mijn familie en vrienden (denk overigens niet dat ik een kroket belangrijker vind dan hen!). Wat mis je niet? In mijn werk in Nederland het continue ter discussie stellen van verder mis ik het wisselende weer niet, hier leef je altijd lekker buiten. Wat heb je meegenomen naar Vietnam dat je zeker niet zou kunnen missen? Een theedoek en het tegeltje gekregen van vrienden met de spreuk meitsje neie freonen, mar ferjit dyn alde net. Nu maar hopen dat ze mij ook niet vergeten! Wat ga je zeker doen tijdens je verblijf in Ho Chi Minh City? De mooiste plekjes van Vietnam bezoeken samen met vrienden die me dit jaar komen opzoeken, maar vooral genieten van al het nieuwe. Heb je al een Opmerkelijke Vietnamese situatie meegemaakt? Nou, die zijn er veel, het meest opmerkelijke zijn toch wel de lachbuien van de mensen die je tegenkomt, ik blijf waarschijnlijk nog steeds vreemd om te zien. Joep Janssen schreef het artikel Nederlands Deltaplan Hieronder volgt de ingekorte versie: Even ten zuiden van Ho Chi Minh Stad, omringd door water, ligt Can Tho. Het is de grootste stad van de Mekongdelta in Vietnam. Met Chinees Nieuwjaar stond de helft van ons huis onder water, vertelt mevrouw Tiên (46). Dat is veel te vroeg voor de tijd van het jaar. Ze woont aan de rivier en merkt dat het water jaarlijks stijgt. Sinds 1970 is de gemiddelde jaarlijkse regenval in de Mekongdelta met 94 millimeter toegenomen. We repareren ons huis steeds vaker en verhogen het elke keer een beetje. Binnenkort ontvangt ze geld van de overheid om te verhuizen. Dan wordt er een dijk aangelegd die de stad beter moet beschermen tegen het opkomende water. De dijk is onderdeel van het Mekong Deltaplan, vergelijkbaar met het Nederlandse Deltaplan van de commissie Veerman uit Sterker nog: ook het Mekong Deltaplan staat onder leiding van oud-landbouwminister Cees Veerman. Hij is aangesteld als speciaal adviseur voor de minister-president van Vietnam en leidt een team van Nederlandse waterexperts. Net als destijds in Nederland is het Mekong Deltaplan gericht op de bescherming 16 DOUBLE DUTCH JOEP IN VIETNAM tegen overstromingen en het veiligstellen van de zoetwatervoorziening, rekening houdend met het klimaat en sociaal-economische ontwikkelingen. Veerman: Net als in Nederland willen we over een periode van vijftig tot honderd jaar vooruitkijken. De vraag die we ons daarbij stellen is hoe de ideale Mekongdelta er dan uit zou moeten zien. In de zomer van 2012 moet het Mekong Deltaplan klaar zijn. Een van de gevolgen van klimaatverandering is dat de droge tijden droger worden en de natte tijden natter, legt Eelco van Beek van Deltares uit, het Nederlandse kennisinstituut voor deltatechnologie te Delft. Hij presenteerde vorige maand een eerste inventarisatie van de problemen in de delta aan Nederlandse en Vietnamese onderzoekers en beleidsmakers, tijdens de inmiddels vierde bijeenkomst over het Mekong Deltaplan Ho Chi Minh Stad. Van Beek vertelde dat de temperatuur ook zal toenemen, waardoor de kans op ziektes als dengue groter wordt. Daarnaast leidt een stijging van de zeespiegel tot verzilting in de delta. Hierdoor komt de rijstproductie

Na 3 jaar HCMC kunnen we alleen maar zeggen dat we terugkijken op een onvergetelijke ervaring die we niet haddden willen missen! Wat gaan jullie het meeste missen? In het algemeen: Het ontspannen leven in de hectiek van Ho Chi Minh City. Specifiek: voetballen bij Parkland en Vasco s op vrijdagavond (Acronius), de slingerbusiness van dots & con (Renske), ons zwembad en onze vriendjes en vriendinnetjes (Femke en Stan), het vele reizen, lieve vrienden, de luxe van alle hulp en oppas, bezoekjes aan de pedicure en massagesalon, het Vietnamese straatbeeld (never a dull moment)... Meest positieve ervaring met de Vietnamese cultuur? De loyaliteit van de mensen. En de vele ceremonies die inherent zijn aan de cultuur. Op Acronius werk werd drie uur lang een nieuwe machine uit Taiwan ingezegend door een priester, helaas had de machine een grote storing na 3 weken... Maar vanaf dat moment heeft de inzegening zijn werk gedaan! Favoriete restaurant in HCMC en favoriete gerecht? Pacharan (de patatas bravas en de salade met de geitenkaas), Mekong Merchant (de pizza met mango en Renske ten Bosch, Femke, Acronius en Stan Hettinga kip), Ganesh (Indiase keuken) en restaurant la Nicoise (salade Roquefort). Favoriete vakantiebestemming in Vietnam? Sapa vonden wij het mooist, Mui Ne (Coco Beach) en Phu Quoc (Chen La) het meest relaxed. Heerlijk om de drukte van de stad even te ontvluchten. Hebben jullie nog een leuke winkeltip? Met stip op 1: Cholon. Vrolijk gekleurde inklaptafeltjes, buddha s, servies, rieten manden en tassen, allerlei kralen, prachtig pakpapier, trouwdozen... En natuurlijk de bazaars in Mekong Merchant en The Deck. Deze bazaars zijn een uitkomst voor alle creatievelingen die hun spullen willen verkopen, maar geen winkel hebben en daarnaast uiteraard voor iedereen die op zoek is naar unieke kadootjes. Hopelijk blijven de bazaars voortbestaan! Tenslotte: hebben jullie nog advies voor de achterblijvers? Geniet van de mensen en mogelijkheden in Vietnam. Er kan zoveel. Stel niet te veel uit, voor je het weet is je tijd in Vietnam voorbij! voor Vietnam dat op zaterdag 7 mei verscheen in het NRC Handelsblad. onder druk te staan. Dit wordt nog eens versterkt door een extra vraag naar voedsel als gevolg van de groeiende deltabevolking. Naast natuurlijke veranderingen zijn er ook veranderingen door menselijk ingrijpen. Van Beek: De delta verstedelijkt en eersteklas landbouwgrond wordt in snel tempo omgezet in industrieterrein. Daarvan wordt slechts 30 tot 40 procent feitelijk gebruikt door fabrieken en op sommige plekken zelfs maar 5 procent. De rest staat leeg. Dat is vooral het gevolg van een gebrekkige samenwerking tussen gemeentes en provincies. de beleidsbepalers kunnen verplaatsen. Zo leren ze, is de bedoeling, op een speelse manier samenwerken om de toekomst van de Mekongdelta veilig te stellen: op de computer is mooi te zien wat wanneer onder water loopt. De cultuur van samenwerken zal dus moeten worden gestimuleerd. In Nederland is het letterlijk en figuurlijk polderen in lokale waterschappen al eeuwenlang gebruikelijk, maar in Vietnam ontbreekt zo n poldercultuur. Daarom gaf Nederland Vietnam tijdens de bijeenkomst in Ho Chi Minh Stad een serious game cadeau die werd aangeboden door prins Willem-Alexander, die samen met prinses Máxima officieel op bezoek was. Het is een SimCity-achtig computersimulatiespel waarbij de spelers, zoals burgers en boeren, zich in de rol van DOUBLE DUTCH

Quyn (groep 1): Als er een brommer op de stoep rijdt kun je dood neervallen. Wouter (groep 2): Scheermes: scheerschaaf. Sophie (groep 2): Ooi, lam, ram. Maar wat is een schaap dan? Siena (groep 5) combineert topografie met een spreekwoord: Iemand verwennen is iemand in de Wadden leggen! Nicole in groep 8 over het zintuig gehoor: met je oren kan je verschillende geuren ruiken. Mijn naam is Enno Pranger, ik ben 44 jaar en kom het komend schooljaar lesgeven op de Nederlandse school in Ho Chi Min City. Ik woon in Rotterdam samen met mijn vriend Laurens en we zijn allebei heel enthousiast om in Vietnam te komen wonen en werken. Na de pabo heb ik een aantal jaren gewerkt op een basisschool in de binnenstad van Rotterdam en op een school voor speciaal onderwijs in Capelle aan den IJssel. Verder heb ik een aantal jaar gewerkt als steward bij Martinair en zo al heel wat van de wereld gezien. Sinds 2 jaar werk ik op een VMBO waar ik vaste mentor ben van een brugklas en les geef in Nederlands, Wiskunde, Biologie en Sociale Vaardigheid. Een leuke baan en hele gezellige collega s, maar toch bleef het reisvirus kriebelen en ik ben heel blij dat ik deze uitdaging aan kan gaan. We zijn allebei nog nooit in Vietnam geweest, maar wel een aantal keren in Thailand en dat is ons heel goed bevallen; vriendelijke mensen, lekker eten en een prachtig land. Ik ben heel benieuwd hoe het leven in Vietnam is en ben ook van plan om een beetje Vietnamees te gaan leren zodat ik de mensen echt kan leren kennen. Nieuwe leerkracht Enno Pranger De komende tijd moeten we veel regelen, allebei onze baan opzeggen en overdragen, het huis verkopen en natuurlijk een afscheidsfeestje geven voor onze vrienden en familie. Die zullen we wel missen maar gelukkig kunnen we via internet gemakkelijk contact houden met iedereen. Ik houd van sporten, koken, reizen, muziek maken, lezen en het lijkt me leuk om mee te doen met allerlei sociale en sportieve activiteiten en zo ook nieuwe mensen te leren kennen. Mijn lijfspreuk is: Vrijheid is willen wat je doet. Begin juni kom ik al een week naar Vietnam om de werkzaamheden voor de school te bespreken met Aletta, de huidige leerkracht, en in de zomervakantie komen we definitief naar Vietnam. 19 wonen in vietnam op de valreep Juf Aletta naar Nederland Veel Nederlandse en sommige Vlaamse kinderen hier in Saigon kennen mij als juf Aletta. Na drie jaar, samen met juf Bianca, hét gezicht van de Nederlandse School te zijn geweest, is het tijd voor mij om terug naar Nederland te keren. Hier kijk ik naar uit, want er staan mooie dingen te gebeuren, al denk ik alleen maar aan mijn bruiloft, die gepland staat in de maand juli! Maar ik zal Vietnam erg gaan missen; onder andere mijn multiculturele groep vrienden, mijn werk, het warme weer en het gemakkelijke leven hier. Wat ik ook zal gaan missen is het heerlijke en goedkope Japanse eten (sushi), vooral bij Tokyo Deli en Akatonbo op Le Thanh Ton kom ik graag. Daarnaast is het natuurlijk zalig om het vliegtuig te pakken en een uurtje later in een taxi richting Nha Trang te zitten, waar het heerlijk is om een weekend door te brengen. Dat het tropische klimaat ook nadelen met zich meebrengt ondervond ik twee jaar geleden, toen ik een vogelspin aantrof boven m n computer. Het feit dat ik geen tuinman of andere held in huis had, maar m zelf de deur uit moest werken, staat in m n geheugen gegrift. Mijn laatste Vietnamese wens om een ao dai te bezitten is ook al in vervulling gegaan, want laatst hebben mijn vriendinnen een vrijgezellenfeest georganiseerd en werd ik in n bruids ao dai gehesen. Heel bijzonder om Vietnam van een compleet andere kant te zien: wat waren de Vietnamezen vriendelijk en complimenteus! Vietnam, een land om nooit te vergeten Mar, Bianca, Nathan en Jonah van Sluijs Na 5 jaar gewoond te hebben in Saigon, pakken wij onze spullen om naar Singapore te verhuizen. Wat hebben we hier in die tijd veel meegemaakt! En wanneer je dan terugblikt voor dit stukje op de valreep weet je bijna niet waar te beginnen. Na de eerste periode in HCMC van 1997 t/m 1999 viel in eerste instantie de enorme ontwikkeling op die Vietnam in zeven jaar tijd heeft doorgemaakt: verkeer (brommers en auto s i.p.v. de ons bekende fietsen) en hoge gebouwen, maar ook de transitie van staats- naar private bedrijven met veel jonge mensen op de arbeidsmarkt. We hebben veel in Vietnam en in de regio rondgereisd: genoten van Cambodja, Indonesië en Maleisië. Binnen Vietnam zijn onze favoriete plekken Hoi An (authentiek en cultuur), Mui Ne (golven en vliegeren), Dalat (lekker koel klimaat en outdoor sports) en Phu Quoc (zalig relaxen en zeilen). Naast natuurlijk de typische sfeer en de galleries in Hanoi. Het leven in HCMC zal ons alle vier nog lang bijblijven: het gemak waarmee je hier dingen kunt regelen, de kleinschaligheid van het uitgaanscentrum en de vele leuke restaurants, de luxe van het comfortabele, ruime wonen en natuurlijk de sociale contacten in dit dorp, rondsputterend op de Vespa. Wat hebben we genoten van de geweldige feesten. We zijn een aantal hele goede vrienden rijker en dat zorgt natuurlijk ook weer voor een dubbel gevoel bij vertrek... Gelukkig is Singapore om de hoek! Mar heeft het opzetten en managen van een bedrijf hier als een interessante uitdaging ervaren. Niet alleen bussiness development, maar ook het samenstellen en opleiden van een lokaal team, dat in de toekomst nog onder zijn verantwoording zal blijven vallen. Na bijna 5 jaar lesgeven op de Nederlandse School, zal ik (Bianca) met pijn in mijn hart afscheid nemen van mijn leerlingen, maar ook de organisatie van de The Deck, de bezoeken aan het weeshuis en de patientjes van Heartbeat Vietnam! Ik ga het missen! De jongens zullen vooral hun vrienden, de skatebaan en het sporten missen, niet alleen in club- of schoolverband, maar zelfs regionaal voor FOBISSEA. Wat hebben ze veel getraind en in het zwembad gelegen! Jammer dat Jonah twee weken voor de FOBISSEA reis naar Brunei zijn arm brak... Alle nieuwkomers in HCMC raden we aan om open te staan voor de taal, cultuur en de mooie kanten van Vietnam. Go with the flow en geniet net zoveel van dit land, als wij gedaan hebben! Robert is coach en meditatieleraar. Monique yogadocent voor volwassenen en kinderen. En we zijn beiden Reiki healer. We hebben het LYON Center voor Zelfrealisatie opgezet. Mattijn s werk. Hij doet de administratie bij een lokale visvoerboer (Tomboy, onderdeel van Nutreco). En Irma is recentelijk begonnen met het geven van o.a. aerobics, zumba en personal trainingen. Robert in Zwolle en Monique in Den Haag. We wilden samenwonen. Toen kwam de vraag waar?. Het werd Vietnam! We zijn hier sinds september in Brabant (Eindhoven de gekste) en sinds september 2010 zijn we in Saigon. We verwachten nog zo n 2,5 jaar te blijven Het is heerlijk hier in een warm bad van Nederlanders te landen. We hebben al snel veel contacten gelegd en de nodige initiatieven gerealiseerd. Nu sinds 1 maand in HCMC en verwacht hier minstens 2 jaar te blijven. Dit is de eerste keer dat ik vanuit een bedrijf naar het buitenland ga. Daarvoor steeds op eigen initiatief, maar iedere keer al van te voren in het nieuwe land een baan gevonden, zelfs een keer een sollicitatiegesprek via Skype (dit leverde me de bijnaam internetdate van de baas op ;-) Amsterdam, Wenen, München. We zijn op oudejaarsdag 2010 aangekomen en het idee is dat we 3 jaar blijven. Heel positief. Het is hier erg makkelijk contact te leggen met zowel expats als locals. Vriendelijke mensen, leuke collegas en het is bijzonder om in een land te wonen dat zichtbare groeit. Zeer goed!. Het is stukken schoner en minder chaotisch dan we vooraf gedacht hadden. De mensen zijn zeer aardig, maar wel moeilijk te lezen. En we kijken niet meer raar op als er geen water meer uit de kraan komt. 20 DOUBLE DUTCH
