5 This is how (and where) it all started

6 De serveerster Ik was gevraagd een avond mee te discussiëren met mensen van de Universiteit van Maastricht en bedrijfsexperts over het ontwerp van een nieuwe opleiding. Een éénjarige mastersopleiding over Leren & Ontwikkelen door volwassenen in organisaties. Een boeiend thema. En een prachtige zomeravond. Op de uitnodiging stond het duidelijk: in Château Neercanne zou ik de professor ontmoeten die voor deze opleiding verantwoordelijk zou zijn en die de discussie zou begeleiden. Professor Segers. Ik was bijtijds, zoals dat vaak het geval is met mensen die van ver komen. Maar geen nood. Het was een prachtige plek daar op het terras van dit fraaie kasteel aan de Belgische grens. Een serveerster kwam glimlachend naar mij toe en bood mij een glas wijn aan. Toen iedereen was gearriveerd konden we aan tafel. Daar was de serveerster weer. Nu stelde zij zich aan mij voor. Mien Segers, aangenaam.

7 So, it all started with.. An idea based on observations in practice Enthusiastic people that had a dream Taking steps to make that dream come true

8 Which observations? The world changes constantly and rapidly So does labourmarket More specific; the demand of employers regarding competencies of employees is moving all the time! Consequently, apart from initial education, lifelong learning has become a necessity

9 The MoL staff turned these observations into a serious field of science! Focusing on two main questions: 1. How do adult people learn in every stage of their lives and careers? 2. How do organizations improve their performance as a result of L&D interventions?

10 What valuable insights have been developed, randomly? People learn at every age Informal learning is far more efficient then formal learning The classroom is no longer the (only) place to be Employers can encourage employees to never stop learning People are able to develop their own development frame Employers and employees can create an effective learning culture in which a personnel development plan can be a tool for Learning interventions are highly effective if they can be consumed just-in-time, on-demand meeting individual learning objectives Digital tools increase the availability of learning opportunities and -tools but inspiration is something between people Feed back is a powerful tool as a learning device

11 Why did I join the MoL over the years? 1. My employers have had the benefits of the work of teams of Master students - theories that could be applied - tools that prove their usefulness almost immediately - creating a scientific fundament for our statements 2. Working with an enthusiastic staff and teams of students is inspiring, meaningful and fun! - it keeps me young - we created a powerful network of scientists and alumni - win-win-win

12 Just to give you an impression

13 And.. I have learned a lot! Changing jobs recently once again opened my eyes: Challenges on L&D are roughly the same everywhere in the world L&D is a powerful enabler of economic growth and perspective, so it contributes to decrease poverty (Cooperating with the MoL accelerates my career)

14 To come back on the title.. What decision has been made? To establish a one years master study on L&D Why was that a right decision? Companies and other organizations need professionals in the field of L&D The prove of the pudding: about 250 MoL alumni do have careers now, of which most of them in this field The student teams which I have been working with all performed above average academic level Perhaps because they learn how to create a real team and conduct teamwork (1 + 1 > 2) And so.

15 This top performance has been officially recognized as topopleiding 2016!

16 But how did they do it?

17 Do you remember de serveerster? to serve means: Helping Inspiring Coaching Giving feed back Demonstrating energy Expressing ambition Sharing objectives Building a team that really performs Making others successful Experiencing real friendship!
