We would like to welcome our new editors, Hanneke, Kirsten and Kristina, and are convinced they will provide meaningful contributions to this magazine. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Barbara Piper this summer. Thank you, Barbara, for your enthusiasm and great input! Please enjoy reading her last Saigon Calling in this issue. The theme of this edition of Double Dutch is Architecture & Engineering, a theme that has probably popped into all of our heads at one time or another when passing through the city. It is hard to miss that Ho Chi Minh City is turning into a modern city with state of the art architectural design. Several articles in this magazine will explore this subject further. In the last edition, many of us were preparing for summer holidays. How quickly time flies by, the summer is behind us and we find ourselves heading quickly towards Sinterklaas. Not to worry, a team of dedicated people has already begun busily preparing for the "beste man s" arrival in Ho Chi Minh City. Have a look in our living in Vietnam section to read about how you can prepare for the big day. To keep you updated with new people that have recently arrived in our city, we provide you with short introductions on the last pages. Here you will also find stories from old friends who took on new challenges and left Vietnam. Assem Greetings to you all and a special welcome to the many Dutch people who have recently arrived in Vietnam! I hope that you will all enjoy your stay in Vietnam as much as we do! Also a special welcome to our new members: DFDL Mekong, De Heus LLC, Vitens-Evides International, Sonion, Fugro Vietnam and ECC Real Estate. We wish you lots of success in your business endeavors in Vietnam and hope that being a member of the Dutch Business Association will contribute to this. We have had some major changes in the board of the Dutch Business Association Vietnam (DBAV): Peter Kerckhaert, Tao van Ngo and Marjo Vaessen left the board and we want to thank them for the many contributions that they made. The board was reinforced by 6 new members (see left). The secretary is still run by Violette Brand. Having a board of 8 members now, we have ambitious plans to initiate and organize many activities for the Dutch in Vietnam this year. We have revised the website of the DBAV ( with a fresh new look. We had our first Business Luncheon of the season on the topic Infrastructure & Development of Ho Chi Minh City and we started our monthly network drinks, Derde Donderdag Dutch Drinks. Impossible to miss! We also had a meeting with Minister Ms. Verburg (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) at the residence of the Consul General, Jos Schellaars and his wife Heleen. Looking forward, we have many business-, as well as social events coming up, the latter being organized by the Nederlandse Vereniging (NLV), a part of DBAV that is run by a group of enthusiastic volunteers who do a terrific job! 9 working working new company in town working expands into Vietnam fugro vietnam Fugro is a multi-national engineering services group active in the fields of geotechnical engineering, surveying and geoscience. From small beginnings in the Netherlands in the early 1960s, today Fugro operates in more than 50 countries and employs almost 14,000 staff. The group is headquartered in Leidschendam, close to The Hague, and has been publicly listed on the Euronext Amsterdam stock exchange since Since 2008, Fugro has been a blue-chip company included in the AEX-Index. The unusual name reflects the group s origin as a geotechnical engineering company, from FUnderingstechniek and GROndmechanica - the Dutch for foundation techniques and soil mechanics. Although Fugro has had a representative office in Vietnam for many years, this has been focussed on the offshore oil and gas sector, and until recently Fugro has not been very active in Vietnam itself. However, the tremendous growth of the Vietnamese economy has resulted in a construction and infrastructure boom, particularly in the major cities. This has presented opportunities for Fugro s geotechnical division, which provides consultancy services, making use of in-house designed technologies in order to collect data combined with expertise in data analysis to advise clients on foundation design and soil mechanics, in the fields of infrastructure development, construction, materials testing and water resources. In 2008, it became clear to Fugro management that there was sufficient potential work to merit setting up a permanent office in Vietnam to provide a full range of high quality geotechnical services to the civil engineering and construction industry in Vietnam, including site investigation and testing, geotechnical instrumentation, foundation testing, and engineering consultancy. The operating license was granted by the Vietnamese authorities in May this year, and in September, Fugro s newest office was declared officially open for business at an opening ceremony held in the Sheraton Hotel in HCMC. More than 100 guests attended the opening ceremony, including the Dutch Consul General, commercial attaches from the Dutch and Chinese consulates, representatives from the Vietnamese authorities, as well as clients and suppliers. Jos Schellaars, the Dutch Consul General, noted in his speech at the opening ceremony that the opening of Fugro s latest office marked the continuing contribution of Dutch business to the Vietnamese economy, and said that Fugro will be able to contribute their engineering and business expertise to the Vietnamese construction industry, helping to ensure that new infrastructure developments are executed to international standards of quality and safety. Mr Schellaars also commented that the opening of the office would contribute to training and educating a new generation of Vietnamese engineers, which is of utmost importance for the continuing growth of the nation s economy. The new company, Fugro Geotechnics Vietnam LLC currently employs 12 local staff under the supervision of an experienced Fugro manager, Liao Minghui, who was transferred from Fugro s Hong Kong office in 2008 to oversee the setting up of the new company. Liao originally trained in China and the UK as a geophysicist, and has been working for Fugro for over 15 years. He is an experienced Vietnam hand, having run several site investigation projects here before his transfer to lead the new office. 10 working New embassy leadership Eager to serve Dutch interests in Vietnam w Very pleased to meet you... Joop Scheffers & Steven Collet We are the new number one and two at the Dutch embassy in Hanoi: Joop Scheffers, Ambassador (right) and Steven Collet, Deputy Chief of Mission. After a long career in political and economic affairs for the Dutch Foreign Ministry, including various postings in mostly socialist countries, Joop Scheffers left his previous position in The Hague as Asia Director at Headquarters to start as the new Ambassador to Vietnam last January. Steven Collet, after several positions related to development and economic cooperation, followed suit in May as the new Deputy Chief of Mission. Emerging market Vietnam was at the top of both of our lists and we are excited to serve Dutch interests in this particular period of a global economic downturn on the one hand and of economic growth and development in Vietnam on the other hand. Holland is a strong brand in Vietnam: we are the number one EU investor and fourth European trade partner. Vietnam appreciates the quality of our products and the pragmatic and reliable way we do business. Moreover, we are known for our knowledge and expertise linked to water and agriculture. And for great football and lovely tulips, of course. Our focus is on areas of mutual interest: economic cooperation, water and climate change, agriculture, health, higher education and political dialogue and cooperation. Both the Netherlands and Vietnam can gain from cooperating in these fields be it commercially, politically or in terms of improved well-being for our peoples. We are keen to invest our energy in win-win situations. One example is our assistance to a public-private partnership enhancing the pangafish market chain. This effort is aimed at improving EU market access for Vietnam-based companies, serving the commercial interest of Dutch fish traders, increasing food safety in both the Netherlands and Vietnam, and improving the ecology of the Mekong Delta. As Vietnam is eager to reach the status of Middle Income Country in the near future, development assistance budgets will go down, including our own. This opens a new and challenging chapter of broadening and sustaining relationships between our two countries. We are keen to ensure that the Netherlands benefits from goodwill and networks that have been developed over the past years mainly through our role as a substantial donor. Increasingly, we will be brokering between Dutch and Vietnamese partners doing business together, be it in the field of trade, investment or sharing of expertise. In doing so, the embassy, the Ho Chi Minh City based consulategeneral and the Netherlands education support office (Neso) have a variety of supporting instruments on offer. 11 working working working Small steps forward Hanny van Kampen In Ho Chi Minh City, the number of Dutch women who are either starting their own business or continuing their careers is increasing. Double Dutch wants to get better acquainted with them. For this edition Hanny van Kampen, teacher trainer from Voluntary Service Overseas, offered to tell us a bit more about her NGO. my ngo Voluntary Service Overseas Who are you? My name is Hanny van Kampen (1951) and I work as a volunteer teacher trainer at the Nguyen Dinh Chieu school for disabled children, near to Danang, as part of the programme of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Vietnam addressing disability issues in Vietnam. I train the teachers and share my knowledge & experience of the different fields of disabilities by giving workshops, observing lessons and giving advice to teachers. Could you tell us more about VSO? VSO is the world s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. Our high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. We tackle poverty by using the skills, commitment and enthusiasm of individuals from around the world. For 50 years, VSO has been recruiting volunteers aged 18 to 75 to live and work in the heart of local communities. VSO supports disadvantaged communities by bringing their stories and experience to the attention of the public and decision makers worldwide. We also undertake advocacy locally, nationally and internationally to bring about positive change to policies and practices. Partnership is a key feature of the way in which we work with other agencies. We involve local partners in the communities that we work with, placing volunteers with them to help increase their impact and effectiveness. We work with corporate partners around the world to provide them with ways to contribute to our development goals in a way that provides benefits to both parties. LINKS (Learning through International Networking and Knowledge Sharing) activities give our partners the chance to go to another country to learn and share good practice by visiting or working with agencies there. What do you enjoy in your job? I most enjoy spending time with the youngest children in our school and working with them. Then I can see firsthand that disabled children can learn and make progress, despite their impairment. What do you find most challenging? The biggest challenge is the diversity of children with different disabilities, different levels of understanding and different age levels that are all in one class together, and teaching our teachers to reach them effectively. What is your most positive experience so far? When I can see even small steps forward, it makes me really happy. Recently I gave a workshop about the importance of play. Seeing that the teachers follow my advice gives me a lot of fulfilment. How could we, readers of Double Dutch, help your organisation? 12 working To Dutch or Dis-dutch Phuong-Mai Nguyen I was having dinner with Linh a very good Vietnamese friend of mine: How is the new boss? - I asked. Linh gave me a gesture of hopelessness, sat down, and very seriously questioned me back: Tell me, Mai, since you have been living among the Dutch for ages. What is wrong with them? So, this is the story: Kees van der Vis was appointed to be the new manager. It started off very smoothly. He showed a high level of cultural understanding for his Vietnamese co-workers; among other things, he hosted a positionwarming party at his house, blending work and private life, by inviting both his team and their immediate families. At the office however, things were a bit different. This was the third time Mr van der Vis started a meeting with: Listen guys, it seems we are having a problem. Tell me what you think we could do to straighten things out. Come on! He is the boss! - Linh moaned You don t get paid three times more than us to come to a meeting looking totally emptyhanded like that. What should he do then? Come up with a list of suggestions maybe? Linh was annoyed Show that he had put in some thought and done some preparation? Hours of talking were too much for the problem at hand. I think when the Dutch cabinet is done discussing solutions to the financial crisis, the crisis itself will already be over. I laughed. It was March 2009 and the Tweede Kamer was in fact still in endless discussion on how to handle the crisis. In leadership training, I often make a connection between an octopus and a good leader in Việt Nam. The octopus has its tentacles extended into different parts of the company. A network of trusted people gives him or her information about what the community wants, who wishes to participate, and who has the gifts to fulfill the tasks. This person spends a lot of time before a meeting acquiring essential information. At the meeting, there is no putting the problem on the table and seeing who has the best idea since ideas have been informally gathered by the leader and decisions are therefore partly made before the meeting. However, for many Dutch people, this networking preparation seems inappropriate because such behavior is labeled as lobbying, politics, going behind people s backs, or manipulation. The most common mistake in doing business in Việt Nam is that foreign business people tend to focus on the resolution of the superficial conflicts between two sides: the Vietnamese people and Us, completely ignorant of the real confrontation which should be labeled as the Vietnamese culture and Us. People are the product of culture. Dealing with people without knowing why they are programmed to behave one way or the other ensures that you go astray. So, what do you think, will you stay Dutch or go Dis-Dutch? In other words, are you Kees van der Vis, or do you want to become Kees van Octopus? Phuong-Mai Nguyen (nguyen. phuongmai1@gmail.com) worked as a journalist in Việt Nam before she moved to The Netherlands and obtained her PhD in Intercultural Communication and Negotiation in Utrecht University. 15 living living living living agenda 03/10/2009 LEIDENS ONTZET 15/10/2009 EUROCHAM-DBAV JOINT NETWORKING EVENT Bonsai Boat 13/11/2009 DBAV GOLF TOURNAMENT sunlight shelter door barbara kruimer Theo van Olphen en Barbara Kruimer hebben vanaf 1 mei 2009 de sponsoring van een jongenshuis op zich genomen. In dit huis wonen 28 jongens van 6 tot 17 jaar oud. Zij wonen er om uiteenlopende redenen. Sommige kinderen hebben geen ouders meer, anderen hebben wel ouder(s) maar deze kunnen niet voor hun kinderen zorgen. Veelal zijn deze jongens door de politie van straat gehaald, omdat ze aan het bedelen waren of kauwgom of lottotickets aan het verkopen waren. Door de renovatie van het jongenhuis hebben deze jongens nu een dak boven hun hoofd en gaan ze gewoon naar school. Ze krijgen drie keer per dag te eten en voor kleding en medische voorzieningen wordt gezorgd. Het huis draagt de naam Sunlight Shelter en staat in district 3. Er was in geen jaren iets aan gedaan en er was dan ook een enorme hoeveelheid achterstallig onderhoud. De electriciteitsaanleg was reden tot grote bezorgdheid. De keuken en badkamer waren in dezelfde ruimte, waardoor de hygiene en veiligheid in gevaar kwamen. Rene de Roos en later Andre van Bijsterveld van Royal Haskoning Vietnam hebben zich hard gemaakt om dit te verbeteren. Royal Haskoning Vietnam heeft gratis de verbouwingstekeningen verzorgd. Vervolgens is geld ingezameld voor de renovatie, bijvoorbeeld tijdens het queen s ball gala. Ook de Consular Club heeft een behoorlijk bedrag gedoneerd. Uiteindelijk was er een tekort van 3500 USD, totdat Rene de Roos contact opnam met Unicons, een grote lokale aannemer waar Haskoning vaak zaken mee doet. Dit Vietnamese bedrijf heeft heel gul aangeboden de helft van de verbouwingskosten voor hun rekening te nemen. Opeens is er dus een behoorlijk bedrag over!!!! Niet gevreesd, dit geld gaat bijzonder goed gebruikt worden. Zo zijn er bijvoorbeeld geen bedden (de jongens slapen op de grond), ontbreken een koelkast, wasmachine, een goedwerkende computer en zijn er onvoldoende fietsen om naar school te gaan. Volop mogelijkheden dus om het geld goed te besteden en te zorgen voor wat meer sunlight voor de jongens. De mensen met wie we de afgelopen jaren hebben gewoond en gewerkt. De mensen die onze kinderen hebben zien opgroeien en hebben meegeholpen met opvoeden. Je weet dat je ze misschien nooit meer ziet en als je ze wel weer ziet, kijk je vanuit het perspectief van toen. Wat is jullie meest positieve ervaring met de Vietnamese cultuur? De vriendelijkheid van de mensen en de cultuur dat alles kan in het hier en nu. En hoe ongelooflijk hard iedereen werkt, misschien niet altijd even efficiënt maar wel met heel veel inzet. Wat is jullie meest negatieve ervaring? Het ontbreken van kennis en hulp van de internationale school bij de leerproblemen van Famke. Dan realiseer je je dat niet alles is wat het lijkt. Zijn jullie verwachtingen van toen jullie naar Vietnam kwamen, uitgekomen? Wij hadden geen verwachtingen toen we gingen verhuizen, het was een redelijk impulsieve beslissing om van een verbouwing in Nederland naar Vietnam te gaan. Terugkijkend op de afgelopen vijf jaar hebben we een hoop beleefd en geleerd. Het was een super leuke tijd. Wat is jullie favoriete restaurant in HCMC en wat bestellen jullie daar meestal? Er zijn zoveel leuke restaurants met elk iets speciaals of een reden waarom we er kwamen. Mekong Merchant op zondagavond met de kinderen, The Villa om rustig aan de rivier te zitten, een biertje met zijn tweeën bij de Boat house na het werk, BBQ in Ton That Tiep met mijn collega s en Karaoke in Zenta. Hebben jullie nog een leuke winkeltip? Tafelkleden bij Diep! En geloof me, ze liggen in Nederland in de winkel voor 50. Zeker de moeite van het aanschaffen bij Diep waard. Wat is jullie leukste vakantiebestemming in Vietnam? Fietsen van Dalat naar Mui Ne. Welke souveniers hebben jullie nog gekocht de laatste paar weken in Vietnam? Hmmm, er was niet heel veel tijd omdat de verhuizing binnen drie weken aan de orde was. Maar ik ben nog in Cholon geweest, op Cho Ben Than en bij Mr Ao. Uiteindelijk heb ik nog eetstokjes gekocht en bruidsdozen aangeschaft. Allerbelangrijkste was het laten lamineren van een foto van het straatbeeld bij ons huis van mijn vriendin Joss. Water, water en nog eens water. Wat is het leukste feest dat je hier hebt meegemaakt? New Zealand day. Heerlijk relaxed op je kleedje kletsen en naar de live band van dat jaar luisteren. Tenslotte: nog enig advies voor de achterblijvers? Geniet van de mensen en de mogelijkheden in Vietnam. Kijk naar de positieve kanten van het land, want elk land en elke cultuur heeft zijn positieve en negatieve aspecten. 17 living living JOEP IN VIETNAM living living Cabaret MEKONG METROPOOL Vietnam favoriet boven China, zo kopte het Financieel Dagblad van 5 maart China is voor veel multinationals te duur geworden en de Socialistische Republiek Vietnam biedt een goedkoop alternatief. Veel bedrijven verplaatsen een deel van hun werkzaamheden uit China naar Vietnam. Dit voorbeeld is illustratief voor de situatie waarin Vietnam zich bevindt: het land transformeert van een agrarische naar een industriële samenleving. Om deze ontwikkeling kracht bij te zetten, heeft de regering drie economische regio s in het land aangewezen. De grootste ligt rond Ho Chi Minhstad. Deze zuidelijke regio is het venster van Vietnam op de wereld. Hier is de ideologie van Ho Chi Minh naar de achtergrond verdwenen. De economie groeit enorm en de drang onder de snelgroeiende bevolking om te moderniseren is duidelijk zichtbaar. Ik vraag me af welke ruimtelijke gevolgen deze groei heeft voor het economisch hart van Vietnam. Op 28 februari 2009 check ik in voor vluchtnummer LH4683. Voor onbepaalde tijd vertrek ik naar Ho Chi Minhstad. Door het vliegtuigraampje kijk ik uit over het fascinerende landschap van de Mekong Delta. Dit waterrijke plattelandsgebied is dichtbevolkt en wordt ook wel de rijstschuur van Azië genoemd. De dijkjes, lintbebouwing, irrigatiekanalen en het vlekkenplan van rijstvelden herinneren mij aan het Nederlandse landschap. De Fransen hebben het natuurlijke verloop van de Mekong Delta gecultiveerd om de rijstproductie op te schroeven. Het Franse netwerk van water en wegen is over het bestaande landschap heen gespannen. In de verte zie ik de My Thuan brug die in 2000 met Australische steun is voltooid. Dit symbool van vooruitgang is onderdeel van de nieuwste laag in het landschap: de Vietnamezen bouwen - met hulp van buitenaf - driftig verder aan moderne wegen, rails en steden. De bevolking lijkt zich te hebben ontdaan van haar geschiedenis en heeft zich met een ongekend positieve kijk op de toekomst opengesteld voor veranderingen. Vanaf het moment dat ik in een taxi stap en van het vliegveld naar het centrum rijd, ervaar ik de handelsdrift en de opeenvolging van activiteiten. Niet één teken wijst er op dat de stad wordt beïnvloed door de wereldwijde financiële crisis. In mijn appartement lees ik in de Saigon Times dat de overheid een regionaal masterplan heeft gelanceerd om Ho Chi Minhstad in 2050 tot het belangrijkste economische centrum van Azië te laten uitgroeien. Om dit te bereiken heeft Vietnam een paar uitstekende troeven in handen. Ten eerste hebben de Vietnamezen in het verleden blijk gegeven van hun flexibiliteit en creativiteit. Ten tweede vormt de bevolkingsgroei een enorm potentieel, waardoor zowel de export als de interne markt wordt gestimuleerd. Tot slot biedt de natuurlijke rijkdom en de grote kustlijn kansen voor de toekomst. Vietnam ligt strategisch in het centrum van de grote Aziatische handelssteden, zoals Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore en Bangkok. Dat is de reden dat Vietnam zich kan presenteren als de ideale poort naar Zuid-Oost Azië. Ho Chi Minhstad bruist. De stad functioneert als een uit de kluiten gewassen dorp, dat in potentie kan uitgroeien tot een metropool. Dit contrast is op straat zichtbaar: idyllische landelijke villa s worden afgewisseld met glazen metropolitane bouwprojecten. 18 nederlandse school saigon iving living bianca van sluijs living Stichting Nederlandse School Saigon xíchlô De Nederlandse School Saigon is in het schooljaar van start gegaan met 37 leerlingen die les krijgen in de Nederlandse taal en cultuur (NTC) op maandag t/m vrijdagmiddag op de British International School en de International School HCMC. Juf Aletta staat voor de groepen 1 t/m 4 en groep 6, terwijl de leerlingen van groep 5, 7 en 8 les krijgen van juf Bianca. De nieuwe leerlingen voelen zich inmiddels al helemaal thuis! Dit schooljaar zal Dominique Stein bij afwezigheid van een van de docenten als vaste inval juf optreden. Bovendien zal zij de kleuters tijdens de cultuurmiddagen les geven. Aan het begin van dit schooljaar hebben de bestuursleden Roy van der Knaap, Petra Paenmoan, Renske ten Bosch en Barbara Kruimer hun functie neergelegd. Pissebedden en oorwormen in groep 3 De kinderen in groep 3 en 4 kijken tijdens hun Nederlandse les graag naar het programma Huisje Boompje Beestje, wat uitgezonden wordt door School TV. Naar aanleiding van de aflevering over pissebedden hebben de kinderen zich volledig op de opdracht om een tekening te maken van de oorworm gestort. Jasmijn neemt het begrip oor worm wel heel letterlijk een worm met oren! Ook hebben we een gesprekje gevoerd over de pissebed. Want wat hebben de kinderen van de aflevering geleerd? Wat is je meest positieve ervaring met de Vietnamese cultuur? De bevolking lijkt enthousiast over elke vooruitgang die ze kunnen boeken. Zijn je verwachtingen die je destijds had toen je naar Vietnam kwam, uitgekomen? Wij hadden niet echt vastomlijnde verwachtingen. We waren acht jaar geleden al eens met z n tweeën zes weken door Vietnam gereisd. We hebben het met z n vieren erg goed gehad en missen onze lieve vrienden! Wat is je favoriete restaurant in HCMC? Wij kwamen graag bij het Riverside café, vooral door onze vrienden die daar woonden en we konden er heerlijk afkoelen in het zwembad. Heb nl je nog een leuke winkeltip? Als je nieuw bent in HCMC: laat je meenemen naar Cho Lon. Daar kun je heel goed shoppen! Ook op Dong Khoi zijn leuke winkels voor cadeaus voor back home. L Apothecaire heeft hele lekkere producten, een aanrader. Wat is jullie leukste vakantiebestemming in Vietnam? Mui Ne was een leuke plek om de drukte van de stad te ontvluchten en uit te waaien. Wat was het leukste feest? Koninginnedag 2009 was echt heel gezellig met eten op hoog niveau. Wat ga je het meeste missen? Het ontspannen leven zonder agenda. De snelheid waarmee (sommige) zaken geregeld worden en natuurlijk een aantal goede vrienden die we hebben gemaakt. Welke souvenirs heb je nog gekocht de laatste paar weken in Vietnam? Vietnameze bruidsdozen. Voor mezelf, voor mijn zus en moeder en vriendinnen. Alle kralen van Cho Lon, Vietnamese oorlogsprenten, veel laten inlijsten, Ai Dai s en natuurlijk hebben we de Saigon Square s ski-en winterafdeling leeggekocht. Ten slotte: nog wat advies voor de achterblijvers? Laat het tempo gewoon lekker laag en geniet van de ontspannen levensstijl in het dorp. Familie roelofs is naar nederland saigon calling barbara piper Het Thao Dien dorp De zomer vakantieperiode (lees: de schoolvakantie) in Ho Chi Minh City is een aparte periode. (Bijna) Alle expat gezinnen zijn terug naar het thuisland om vrienden en familie te bezoeken. En naast alle gezellige mensen die er wel zijn en die samen alles samen doen, ben je aangewezen op de lokale bevolking en een schaarste aan westerse importproducten in de supermarkt. In de binnenstad is het eten in de restaurants nog lekker; in Thao Dien zijn het TET-achtige praktijken: wormen in de salade en de nodige bacterie-dodende colaatjes na een gerecht waar vlees in voorkwam. Ik heb er nu twee zomers doorgebracht. Afgelopen jaar, ons eerste jaar in HCMC, zag ik er als een berg tegenop. Mijn allereerste zeven vakantieweken als stay at home mummy, samen met de kinderen. Wouter had maar een week vrij, we waren nog bezig met de verbouwing in ons huis en we hadden nog niet genoeg meubels om het huis te vullen. Desondanks waren het de gezelligste en leukste weken ooit! Het was echt vakantie. Ik heb ultiem van de kinderen en de nieuwe omgeving genoten. Ik had geen personeel in huis, hoogstens s ochtends de schoonmaakster. De kinderen en ik gingen samen op pad, veel zwemmen, deden samen de boodschappen, probeerden samen contact te maken met de lokale bevolking, bereidden samen het eten voor en deden samen de afwas. Veel spelletjes in en rondom het huis en elke middag en/of avond was het open huis voor vriendjes en vriendinnetjes die in de stad waren. De tweede zomer was ik al redelijk expat-geingeburgerd. Ik wist wanneer Annam een nieuwe lading Cote D Or chocola en Gouda kaas zou binnenkrijgen; ik had s ochtends de schoonmaakster Thao, vanaf de middag kokkie Mai en de tuinman Nhi. s Middags speelde Thao ook met de kinderen zodat ik even alleen op pad kon (naar Quyn of de Golden Hands of even een shoppie op Dong Khoi). En als het etenstijd was, hoefde ik alleen maar de handen van de kinderen te wassen. Kortom, ik had alle vrijheid en plukte de vruchten van de inmiddels geoliede expat life-machine how to beat the heat with staff. Ook deze zomer was het weer open huis en werd er weer veel afgelachen. Waar woonden jullie voorheen? Bloemendaal, NL. Wat verwachten jullie van je verblijf in Vietnam? Dat we er met zijn vieren een hele leuke tijd van gaan maken. Als Pippa straks wat groter is leuke reizen maken en genieten van het heerlijke klimaat!! Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? Heel goed. Aardige mensen, fijn klimaat, heerlijk huis. Wat vinden jullie van de overgang van jullie vorige uitzend-ervaring naar Vietnam? Een heel groot verschil. De vorige keer zaten we zonder kinderen voor drie jaar in Maputo (Mozambique), een Afrikaans land. En nu in een Aziatisch land met twee kinderen. De hele opstart gaat hier een stuk makkelijker: bijna alles is te krijgen en we zijn positief verrast door de efficientie van de Vietnamezen. Wat missen jullie het meest uit Nederland? De wijze waarop de Vietnamezen reageren op onze blonde kinderen. Toen Ilona Pippa een keer voor straf in de hoek van het zwembad had gezet omdat ze stout was geweest, stapte er een man die aan het zwemmen was uit het zwembad om het haar helemaal naar haar zin en aan het lachen te maken. In de geboorteplaats van de founder van Zuid-Afrika (Jan van Riebeeck): Culemborg (tussen Utrecht en Den Bosch). Wat verwachten jullie van je verblijf in Vietnam? Hard werken combineren met een extreem goede kwaliteit van leven. Genieten van elke dag die we hier als gezin samen hebben. Reizen door het land en zo veel mogelijk leren en opsnuiven van de Vietnamese cultuur. Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? Erg positief. Vietnam lijkt zo op het eerste gezicht dermate dynamisch dat de veranderingen bijna dagelijks merkbaar zijn. Vietnamezen zijn erg vriendelijk en supportive, de expats die we al ontmoet hebben zijn allemaal erg open, spontaan en behulpzaam. Wij verwachten onze draai snel te vinden en hopen veel te kunnen genieten van Vietnam en de regio. Wat missen jullie het meest uit Nederland? Onze vaste vrienden- en burenkring, waar je altijd even naar binnen loopt. De spontane speelafspraken van de kinderen. En ontbijtkoek, want de hagelslag (verslaving van Rob) hebben we meegenomen. Zo n 15 jaar geleden hebben we 3 jaar in Peking gewoond. Zo n goede buitenlandervaring willen we ook onze kinderen graag meegeven. Theo werkt voor FrieslandCampina. Hoe lang verwachten jullie te blijven? Ons contract is voor drie jaar, dus daar gaan we van uit... Waar woonden jullie voorheen? Na het grote, drukke en smoggy Peking, vonden we een mooie rustige en groene plek in Kerkdriel, Nederland. Is dit de eerste keer dat jullie in Vietnam zijn? Theo kwam er in de afgelopen jaren al meerdere keren voor zijn werk. Vietnam ontwikkelt zich snel, maar de typische Vietnamese cultuur blijft (hopelijk) wel behouden. Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? Heel goed. We worden warm onthaald door de Nederlandse gemeenschap, op werk, op school, in de compound, etc. Vietnamese mensen zijn ook erg aardig. Voor de kinderen is het Engels op school nog even moeilijk, maar we worden door iedereen verzekerd dat dit snel goed zal gaan. Wat missen jullie het meest uit Nederland? Familie en vrienden en de buurt... De wandelingen met Olivier langs de Maas, waar hij altijd lekker kan zwemmen en spelen met andere honden. En fietstochtjes door het Hollandse landschap. Wat hebben jullie nog extra ingekocht voordat jullie naar Vietnam gingen verhuizen? Met name nieuwe keukenspullen, want we hebben ons huis in Nederland nog. Hoe zijn de eerste ervaringen? Heel positief. Veertien jaar geleden woonden wij allebei hier en hebben wij elkaar hier ontmoet. Toen wij terug kwamen, konden wij maar weinig herkennen. De stad is nogal een stuk verder ontwikkeld. Wij hebben inmiddels leuke mensen ontmoet, werk is lekker druk, en de meiden vinden school geweldig. Wat vinden jullie van de overgang van Cambodja naar Vietnam? De overgang gaat heel soepel. Wij zijn de temperatuur en de cultuur gewend. Natuurlijk kost het wel even tijd om vertrouwd te raken met het leven en de mensen hier. Wat missen jullie het meest uit Nederland? Familie, vrienden, stroopwafels en soms het koude weer. Wat hebben jullie nog extra ingekocht voordat jullie naar Vietnam gingen verhuizen? Belegen boerenkaas, wij hebben een wiel van 10 kg mee! Na de eerste keer winkelen in Metro was het een beetje sneu, maar vooral grappig om diezelfde kaas in de schappen te zien liggen. Welk item in je container zouden jullie niet willen missen?
