New developments, special construction technologies and safety will be addressed as well as underground storage, logistic systems and multiple use of land. Now, the course can be combined with a study trip to the Björnvika tunnel Project in Oslo. The studytrip will take place during the immersing of the tunnelelements in august First lecture: Wednesday ECTS:3 More information is available at Website: citg.tudelft.nl/ogbouw, Blackboard or visit room 3.29, tel: Lecture Theory of Consolidation (5301) in 2008 The lectures will take place on Friday afternoons from to in week 15 to 23; first two lectures in room 1.98 then at Deltares/GeoDelft (Electronic Board Room). The lectures are presented by Prof Dr Frans Barends and guest lecturers Dr Ronald Brinkgreve, Dr Evert den Haan, Dr Meindert Van, Dr Cor Zwanenburg and Ing Arno Rozing. During each lecture, a specific practical problem is discussed. After knowledge introduction the participants should find by their own creativity and with the aid of available facilities (computer models, test results) suitable solutions that will be evaluated collectively. The Active participation (including some homework) is sufficient to obtain a personal proof of skill. Thus, participation is mandatory, and then there is no separate examination. Consolidation occurs during loading of saturated deformable porous media, like soil. Similar processes are recognized elsewhere, e.g. in human bones (knee disc) and in the paper industry. Deformations in such media cause pore-volume changes and corresponding pore fluid pressures will initiate seepage and affect the functioning. It is of great importance to settlements and stability, in particular when CT-nieuws nummer 32 jaargang 41, 10 april 2008

2 CT-Nieuws Jaargang 41 nummer april 2008 permeability is small, compressibility is large and strength is limited. In delta areas, such type of soil is everywhere. Dikes, rail and road embankments are composed of it. Consolidation affects the transient stability of slopes, building pit walls and tunnel shields, and it plays a role in dredging, land reclamation, drainage and pumping systems. The lectures focus on multi-dimensional and complex, but realistic and practical situations. It treats the background of time dependent interaction of water and soil with special emphasizes on peculiar and unexpected behavior. A survey will be given of the practically available methods and illustrative situations are analyzed individually and in teams. Analytical, numerical and simple engineering methods will be introduced. The material presented consists of an English manuscript and separate handouts, which will be distributed during the lectures. Computers and suitable models will be provided for. Propedeuse & Bachelor Propedeuse Heb je voor je propedeuse al 60 ects of meer, vraag dan je propedeusediploma aan. Want zonder propedeusediploma kan je geen bachelordiploma krijgen. Let op: je mag maar 7ects aan vijven hebben in je propedeuse! Vul het propedeuse examenaanvraagformulier in, deze is te verkrijgen bij het servicepunt of op de campussite van Citg, Vul hem in en wij kijken of je aan alle eisen voldoet. Want zonder bachelordiploma kan je geen masterdiploma krijgen. Let op: Je mag maar 11 ects aan vijven hebben en het vak CT3000 (bacheloreindproject) moet afgerond zijn met een voldoende! Let op: Naast 3000 moeten 2061 en 3061 ook minimaal een 6 zijn! For students Coastal Engineering, Coastal Dynamics and other Hydraulic Engineering students As announced during the lectures of CT4300 and CT 5303 a field visit will be organized in the weekend of the 25 th, 26th and 27th of April. We will visit the Dutch Wadden island of Ameland on invitation of the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM). The program is not final yet, but it is definitely going to be interesting. We will leave on Friday afternoon and will be back Sunday evening at app. 10 o clock. The costs will be Euro 15, - and transportation costs. For further information contact us or see also Blackboard. Harde Knip Vanaf 1 september 2010 gaat de Harde Knip in. Dit betekent dat je eerst je BSc af moet hebben alvorens je mag beginnen met de MSc. Deze maatregel geldt voor studenten die op 1 september 2006 of later met de BSc Civiele Techniek zijn begonnen. Tot 1 september 2010 geldt voor alle BSc-studenten de P+90 regel, dat wil zeggen dat je tot die datum met de aansluitende (doorstroom)-msc mag beginnen als je je P hebt plus 90 EC's van je tweedejaars en derdejaars vakken. Het lijkt misschien ver weg, maar het is voor de huidige eerste- en tweedejaars studenten verstandig om hier bij de studieplanning rekening mee te houden. Minors De BSc-opleiding Civiele Techniek zal met ingang van het komend studiejaar het major-minor model invoeren. Dat betekent dat studenten die in september 2008 beginnen met de BSc een minor in hun programma hebben. Alle studenten die op dit moment reeds bezig zijn met de BSc hebben géén minor in hun programma! (Peter Hegi, 85248) Voor BSc studenten: ICT in het onderwijs Hierbij willen we je vragen om deel te nemen aan het onderzoek ICT in het onderwijs bij de bacheloropleiding Civiele Techniek. Het management van de faculteit wil graag een beeld krijgen van het huidige gebruik van ICT in het onderwijs bij de bacheloropleiding Civiele Techniek en het ICT gebruik daarbuiten. Onder ICT in het onderwijs verstaan we niet alleen Blackboard, maar alle informatie- en communicatietechnologie die het primaire onderwijsproces ondersteunt. 6 Internship: Setting Up a Local Business Plan in Bangladesh Arsenic Removal IHE Family Filter In Bangladesh, with extremely limited alternative options, millions of rural poor are currently drinking water that is contaminated with high levels of arsenic. Until now, little has been achieved to manage this issue. Arsenic water pollution causes short and long term health problems and can even lead to death. For several years research institute UNESCO-IHE together with the Dutch drinking water supplier Vitens has been developing an adsorbent-based filter system to remove arsenic from groundwater at household levels. An industrial design graduation project will further develop the filter and its product service system. Prototypes of the filter have been built and implemented in Bangladesh in the past five years, and the redesign of the filter includes improvement of the usability by including users. Design and Research a Business Strategy and Services The design however is not yet affordable, available and acceptable to the target group living in rural areas. Therefore next to developing the filter a total business system design is needed, with solutions on finance, surrounding services and distribution. Questions that are relevant for developing solutions might be: What available possibilities on finance structures are appropriate in Bangladesh? How is arsenic mitigation technology currently distributed (e.g. by NGOs)? What people are interested in collaboration and distribution of the filter? What services are most necessary to be provided for? Of course the final research question and design solution will be discussed when you are interested. Further Details The research will be executed at Dhaka and Jessore in Bangladesh, facilitated by the Alternative Movement for Resources and Freedom Society (AMRF-Society). The local research will probably take about 2 months; preferably starting half May Funding from CICAT or University Fund might be possible (~ 250). Estimated travel and accommodation costs: /month.
