1 Voor aantrekkelijk en uitdagend onderwijs Het Lyceum Vos 'voelt goed' en dat zal altijd zo blijven. Ik ben vooral bezig met de vakken Economie en Wiskunde. De docent legt de stof uit maar daarna kan ik ervoor kiezen hoe ik hiermee verder ga. Ik zoek dan graag zelf één en ander uit samen met een klasgenoot. 2 Het Lyceum Vos offers a bilingual stream to pupils who have met the entrance requirements for either Gymnasium, Atheneum, VWO or HAVO. This wonderful opportunity provides an extra challenge for capable, highly motivated pupils. Het Lyceum Vos has a long tradition with respect to international exchange programmes in which English is the medium. In addition to this, several international companies can be found in the Vlaardingen Rijnmond region. The choice to start a -programme at our school is therefore a logical one. More than a hundred schools in The Netherlands have introduced a bilingual stream. in a nutshell: During the first three years: 50% of the classes are conducted in English. These classes are: English, Mathematics, Biology, History, Geography, Economics, Physical Education and Art It is quite possible to combine with Gymnasium! Extra activities are planned, such as an Exchange Programme, trips to Great Britain and projects is the best preparation for (international) academic study. Het Lyceum Vos is associated with the European Platform s Network of Bilingual Schools. Since 2009 we are officially a Junior School The extra costs are 200 euros per year. Entrance requirements: motivation, a high CITO-score with a Gymnasium, Atheneum or VWO HAVO advice What is Bilingual Education ()? In the -programme, at least 50% of the classes are conducted in English. In classes such as Geography, History, Biology, Mathematics, Art, Physical Education and, of course, English, everyone speaks the English language. All course materials and tests will be written in English. In addition to individual assignments, you will work on special group projects with your classmates. For example, you will even learn how to hold a debate in English! In the upper grades VWO you will additionally receive extra English lessons to help you prepare for your final English A2 exam, a subcertificate within the International Baccalaureate Diplome Programme. You must have noticed by now that we expect a lot from our -pupils. That is correct - you certainly will not get bored if you follow our -programme! It is a challenge. Do you dare to take it? The difference between the various programmes Basically, the content of the -programme does not differ from that of standard VWO or HAVO. This means that -pupils who have been accepted into the Gymnasium programme, can also choose to take Latin and Greek and that they will be able to receive a Gymnasium-diploma when they graduate from school. -pupils take the same final exams as the other VWO-pupils as well as the IB A2 examination for English. Upon graduation, you will receive a standard Gymnasium- VWO- or HAVO-diploma. The major difference is that you will be brought into closer contact with the Englishspeaking world. The excursions, exchanges and extra activities will broaden your horizons and prepare you for the future. You will have plenty of opportunity to read in English, from magazine articles to literary classics. By the time you leave school, you should have reached the level of a near native speaker. Het Lyceum Vos biedt TweeTalig Onderwijs () aan voor leerlingen met een Gymnasium-, Atheneum-, VWO- of HAVOadvies. Dit is een geweldige kans, een extra uitdaging voor leerlingen met veel motivatie en veel capaciteiten. Het Lyceum Vos heeft een lange traditie op het gebied van internationale uitwisselingen, waarbij Engels de voertaal is. Bovendien zijn er in Vlaardingen en het Rijnmondgebied veel internationale bedrijven. De keuze voor op onze school is dan ook logisch. In Nederland is op meer dan honderd scholen van start gegaan. : alles op een rijtje: In de klassen 1 t m 3: 50% van de lesuren in het Engels. Deelnemende vakken: Engels, Wiskunde, Biologie, Geschiedenis, Aardrijkskunde, Economie, Lichamelijke Opvoeding en Beeldende Vorming kan goed gecombineerd worden met het Gymnasium! Extra activiteiten in de Onderbouw zoals een uitwisselingsprogramma, excursies naar Londen en projecten De Engelse docenten zijn hiertoe goed opgeleid is de beste voorbereiding op (internationaal) universitair onderwijs. Het Lyceum Vos is aangesloten bij het Netwerk van het Europees Platform. Sinds 2009 zijn wij officieel een Junior -school De extra kosten zijn 200 euro per jaar. Bij deze vorm van onderwijs wordt meer dan de helft van het aantal lessen in het Engels gegeven. Bij Aardrijkskunde, Geschiedenis, Biologie, Wiskunde, Beeldende Vorming, Lichamelijke Opvoeding en uiteraard bij Engels spreek je, net zoals de docent, alleen Engels. Ook al het lesmateriaal is bij deze vakken in het Engels, evenals de toetsen. Behalve individueel zul je in groepjes werken aan speciale opdrachten. Ook zal er gedebatteerd worden in het Engels. In de Bovenbouw VWO krijg je extra lessen Engels om je voor te bereiden op het afsluitend examen English A2 als deelcertificaat van het I nternational Baccalaureate Diplome Programme. Je hebt het vast al gemerkt: we vragen veel van onze leerlingen. Je zult je dan ook niet vervelen bij ons op school. Het is een echte uitdaging! De verschillen met het normale onderwijs Inhoudelijk verschilt de -opleiding niet van het normale Gymnasium, VWO of HAVO. Dat betekent ook dat -leerlingen op Gymnasium-niveau Latijn en Grieks kunnen kiezen en een Gymnasi m-diploma kunnen halen. In de -opleiding krijg je dezelfde examenstof als de andere VWO-leerlingen. Je haalt na zes jaar een gewoon een Gymnasium- VWO- of HAVO-diploma en een IB A2 certificaat voor Engels. Een verschil is wel dat je meer in contact wordt gebracht met de Engelse cultuur. Er zijn excursies, uitwisselingen en extra activiteiten. Uiteindelijk kun je het niveau bereiken van een near native speaker.

3 Bilingual Education: what are the advantages? We assume that you like to learn. But, of course, you would also like to know the reasons for participating in the programme. There are many advantages to mastering the English language. After just two years, your -training should enable you to effortlessly communicate with others in English, while your results in Dutch will not suffer. You will especially notice this during your exchange visits to and from Great Britain and other European countries. Your -training will also help you later on, when you go to university. Many Dutch universities and HBO s now use English as the medium for their courses and this is expected to increase in the future. If you decide to expand your horizons even further, by going abroad to study, or if you accept a position at an international organisation after your studies, the advantages of your -training will be very clear indeed. It is becoming increasingly important to master the English language. The -programme will help you prepare for your own future, wherever that may be. Who will stop you, as a world citizen, to look over the border? Admission Who can sign up for our -programme? First of all, you should be good at languages, you should be prepared to work hard and, above all, you should be willing to improve your English language skills. You do not need to be a genius in order to follow this programme. Motivation is very important! However, we do need to maintain strict entrance requirements in order to ensure that the programme is of the highest quality. If you like to be challenged and if you are curious to find out more about the world in which you live, then perhaps the -programme is something for you! Prerequisites The advice given by your primary school needs to be for you to follow a secondary school programme in one of the following streams: Gymnasium, Atheneum, VWO or HAVO. A high CITO-score is also required. For pupils who have been advised to sign up for Gymnasium Atheneum, a minimum score of 545 is needed and future VWO pupils require a minimum score of 540. HAVO pupils require a minimum score of 538. An above average CITO-score for language is also expected. Interviews will be held with all future pupils prior to their acceptance. We would mainly like to know why you would like to participate (and if it really is what you want). We will also speak to your current teacher at the primary school before the admission committee finalises its decision. We would like to find out as much as possible concerning the potential, the involvement and the motivation of new pupils because the -stream is more demanding than the other programmes. : wat heb je eraan? We gaan ervan uit dat je het leuk vindt om te leren. Natuurlijk gaat het om het grote voordeel van een volledige beheersing van de Engelse taal, terwijl je Nederlands er niet onder lijdt. Al na twee jaar zal je het Engels zodanig spreken, dat communicatie met Engelstaligen probleemloos verloopt. Dat zal merkbaar zijn als je in uitwisselingen te maken krijgt met leerlingen uit Engeland of andere Europese landen waarbij de gemeenschappelijke taal Engels is. En als je later een studie gaat volgen. Immers, het onderwijs op universiteiten en instellingen voor hoger beroepsonderwijs vindt steeds meer plaats in de Engelse taal. Tenslotte zal het merkbaar zijn als je later een studie gaat volgen in het buitenland of gaat werken bij een internationaal bedrijf. Kortom: een goede beheersing van het Engels wordt steeds belangrijker. Wie houdt jou, als wereldburger, tegen om voor je vervolgstudie of je beroep over de grens te kijken? Toelating Wie kunnen zich aanmelden? Allereerst leerlingen die een goed taalgevoel hebben, bereid zijn hard te werken en het leuk vinden om veel met Engels bezig te zijn. Je hoeft niet hoogbegaafd of geniaal te zijn om -onderwijs te volgen. Motivatie is zeer belangrijk. Toch moeten we strenge toelatingseisen stellen om het hoge niveau waar te kunnen maken. Je moet van een uitdaging houden en verder moet je geïnteresseerd zijn in wat de wereld te bieden heeft. Eisen Voor is een Gymnasium-, Atheneum-, VWO- of HAVOadvies nodig. Er wordt een hoge CITO-score geeist. Voor leerlingen met een Gymnasium Atheneum-advies betekent dit een score van minimaal 545, voor leerlingen met een VWO-advies een score van minimaal 540 en leerlingen met een HAVO-advies minimaal 538. Ook wordt een bovengemiddelde CITO-score voor taal verwacht. We voeren met alle toekomstige -ers een gesprek voordat we beslissen. We willen namelijk graag weten of je zelf ook graag wilt. Ook met de leerkracht van groep 8 wordt gesproken. Wij willen ons een zo goed mogelijk beeld vormen van de capaciteiten, de inzet en de motivatie van nieuwe leerlingen, want de -afdeling kent een zwaarder lesprogramma dan de andere afdelingen. 4 The teachers In addition to the native speaker, whose mother tongue is English, the school s teachers teach their own subjects in English. These teachers have followed at least the certified course Classroom English, and have attended intensive training in England. One of the teachers will act as mentor to the entire class. This teacher will supervise the class throughout the year. The mentor assists the pupils in developing study skills which will be used in all classes, not just the subjects. The pupils learn such skills as planning doing their homework, equally dividing tasks during a group project and preparing for tests and presentations. Standard The National Network for Bilingual Education, which is linked to the European Platform for Dutch Education in The Hague, has developed a standard for Bilingual Education. As a member of this network, Het Lyceum Vos adheres to the quality requirements defined by the network. Het Lyceum Vos has a long history of parent participation. In addition to the Parents Council, there are several opportunities for parent participation. There are separate committees in which the parents consult with the teachers and the school management concerning the content and form of the educational programmes. The parents will, of course, regularly be kept informed during the information evenings. Fees The -programme not only requires a greater effort from the pupils, but also entails an extra financial contribution of 200 euros per year (excluding the cost of the school trips). This contribution will cover the costs of special materials, as well as the costs for the extra English lessons. In the upper grades you pay 300 euro from class 4 onwards, because you than start with your International Baccalaureate Diplome Programme. Parents who are unable to pay this extra fee can make special arrangements with the school. A request for such an arrangement can be adressed to the Headmaster. It is our intention to keep this programme open to everyone who meets the entrance requirements. Location The school building is located at Koninginnelaan 771, in the Holy district of Vlaardingen. Bus and train connections with the surrounding vicinities mean that the school is easy to reach. Application Once you - together with your parents, of course - have decided that the -programme is something for you, you can sign up by completing an application form and submitting it to our school. Naturally, you can also send this by post. Based on the advice supplied by your primary school and the CITO-results (or an equivalent entrance test) we will assess whether you can be accepted. If that is indeed the case, then we will invite you for an interview. The decision to accept you to the -programme can only be made after the interview and an intake test has taken place. De docenten Naast een docente van wie de moedertaal Engels is (een native speaker), verzorgen ook gewone docenten de Engelstalige lessen. Zij hebben o.a. een cursus Classroom English gevolgd, Cambridge Advanced, en zijn in Engeland verder bijgeschoold. Eén van de docenten zal de mentor zijn. Hij of zij begeleidt de leerlingen het hele jaar door. De mentor helpt je hoe te leren, niet alleen bij -vakken, maar ook bij vakken als Nederlands en Frans. Je leert hoe je je huiswerk het beste kunt maken en afspraken maakt om het werk in een projectgroep zo goed mogelijk te verdelen. Ook wordt vertelt hoe je je het beste voorbereidt op een proefwerk of spreekbeurt. Standaard Het Landelijke Netwerk voor TweeTalig Onderwijs, verbonden aan het Europees Platform voor het Nederlands Onderwijs in Den Haag, heeft een standaard voor het ontwikkeld. Het Lyceum Vos is lid van dit netwerk en houdt zich aan de kwaliteitseisen als geformuleerd. Het Lyceum Vos kent een lange traditie van ouderparticipatie. Naast de Ouderraad fungeren verschillende Ouderplatforms. Dit zijn aparte overlegorganen waarbij ouders meedenken met de docenten en de schoolleiding over de inhoud en inrichting van het onderwijs. Uiteraard houden we ouders regelmatig op de hoogte via de informatieavonden. Kosten De -opleiding vraagt niet alleen om een grotere leerinspanning maar ook om een extra financiele bijdrage. Deze bijdrage is 200 euro per jaar (exclusief de kosten van schoolreizen). De extra kosten zitten vooral in speciale materialen en de extra lessen Engels. In de tweede fase (Bovenbouw) betaal je 300 euro vanaf klas 4, omdat je dan begint aan je Internationaal Baccalaureaat Diplome Programme. Met ouders voor wie het bedrag een te hoge drempel is, kan de school een regeling treffen. Een verzoek daartoe kan tot de rector gericht worden. Wij streven ernaar dat de opleiding open staat voor iedereen die aan de toelatingseisen voldoet. De bereikbaarheid Het schoolgebouw ligt in de wijk Holy, Koninginnelaan 771. Bus- en treinverbindingen met omliggende gemeenten maken Het Lyceum Vos goed bereikbaar. Aanmelden Wanneer je -samen met je ouders- eenmaal hebt besloten dat het echt iets voor jou is, kun je je aanmelden door het inschrijfformulier in te leveren. Aan de hand van het advies van de basisschool en de CITOgegevens (of die van een vergelijkbare toets) bekijken wij of je toegelaten kunt worden. Als dat zo is nodigen we je uit voor een gesprek. Pas hierna besluiten we of je toegelaten wordt.
