3 EN Z33 is a house for contemporary art. Since its foundation in 2002, Z33 s mission has essentially boiled down to this: in projects and exhibitions, artists confront the visitor with impressions and experiences that motivate him to look at everyday aspects of any person s life from a new perspective. Z33 is a unique laboratory and a meeting place for experiment and innovation. Z33 is a place for contemporary art and a driving force in its region: its aim is to bring the world to Limburg and show Limburg to the world. NL Z33 is een huis voor actuele kunst. Sinds de oprichting in 2002 volgt Z33 een missie die in essentie hierop neerkomt: via projecten en tentoonstellingen confronteren kunstenaars de bezoeker met indrukken en ervaringen die hem er toe aanzetten om vanuit andere invalshoeken te kijken naar alledaagse aspecten uit het leven van iedere mens. Z33 is een uniek laboratorium en een ontmoetingsplaats voor experiment en innovatie. Als huis voor actuele kunst is Z33 een hefboom voor haar regio: we willen de wereld naar Limburg halen en Limburg aan de wereld tonen.

5 EN The Z33. Nu. publication is a compilation of its exhibition projects during the period October October More than a mere overview, it gives the reader an insight into Z33 s current activities. What does this house for contemporary art stand for and how is this actually translated into the various exhibition projects that are currently taking place? We would like to examine this more closely by way of eleven projects. The theme of the publication derives from views expressed by Jan Boelen in an article that explores in greater depth the work done by Z33 as a house for contemporary art. Which criteria are used in formulating an exhibition policy? Which themes are addressed? Why is a particular artist invited to develop a solo project? Introduction Inleiding The thread that runs through Z33 s activities comprises several key words. They are beacons in the policy on the basis of which ideas and exhibition projects are constantly tested. The publication is divided into eleven chapters, each devoted to one of the projects. For each project, an introductory piece attempts to sketch a general outline of its content. This is followed by an extract from Jan Boelen s notes in which he relates the project to the overall mission of Z33. It ends with a section for reflection: a look back at the project in word and/or image, or an idea for the continuation of the project.

6 NL De publicatie Z33. Nu. bundelt de tentoonstellingsprojecten die Z33 van oktober 2008 tot oktober 2010 heeft gerealiseerd. Meer nog dan een overzicht, biedt de publicatie een inzicht in de huidige werking van Z33. Waarvoor staat dit huis voor actuele kunst en hoe wordt dit concreet vertaald naar de uiteenlopende tentoonstellingsprojecten die er plaatsvinden? Aan de hand van elf projecten, willen we hier dieper op ingaan. Rode draad doorheen de publicatie vormt een visietekst van Jan Boelen. Hierin gaat hij dieper in op de werking van Z33 als huis voor actuele kunst. Welke criteria worden er gehanteerd in het uitstippelen van een tentoonstellingsbeleid? Welke thema s komen er aan bod? Waarom wordt een bepaalde kunstenaar uitgenodigd om een soloproject uit te werken? Een aantal keywords lopen als een rode draad doorheen de werking van Z33. Het zijn bakens in het beleid waaraan ideeën en tentoonstellingsprojecten voortdurend worden getoetst. De publicatie is opgedeeld in elf hoofdstukken waarin elk project afzonderlijk wordt belicht. Een inleidende tekst per project tracht een algemeen beeld te scheppen van wat het project precies inhield. Aansluitend volgt een fragment uit de nota s van Jan Boelen, waarin de algemene missie van Z33 getoetst wordt aan het project. Afsluiten doen we met een reflectief luik: in woord en/of beeld wordt teruggeblikt op of wordt er een vervolg gebreid aan het project. EN Notes on Z33 by Jan Boelen Our aim is to reflect on societal and scientific developments. This is translated into concrete themes in which everyday things play a central role, a focus that is also implicit in the artists work. The process that precedes the exhibition is at least as important as the exhibition, the end product, itself. The way in which an exhibition is presented is closely interwoven with its research based substructure. By taking a critical approach to our activities, our aim is to achieve a substantive in-depth context. Form follows content. The research that precedes a project is also made more and more visible. Although an exhibition is generally regarded as a finished product, Z33 aims to broaden the spectator s view. The trajectory that we follow with the artist is also crucial. This aspect is closely interwoven with Z33 s multidisciplinary approach. At some point a visual artist functions as an architect or a designer develops systems inherent in visual arts... Crossovers between design, art, architecture and so on are essential and inextricably linked to our activities. In this case the concept of the artist stands for designers, art- ists, architects or performers. The context of the beguinage site is extremely important for the development of exhibitions. It includes local elements in its answer to global developments. In other words, the context evokes glocal associations. Consequently, the connection with context as well as the investigative approach means that exhibitions in Z33 cannot simply be randomly transferred to other locations. Projects that are picked up abroad (cf. Open- Structures, Thomas Lommée) can only adopt the concept and must adapt the project to the local context. Bringing the world to Limburg and showing Limburg to the world Manifesta 9 & Z-OUT 2010 marks an important turning point in the fairly recent history of Z33 as a house for contemporary art. Policy-wise, we are more than ever steering a coherent substantive course. Also, we are the initiator of two international projects that extend beyond the walls of the beguinage and touch on a much broader Euregional context. Z33 initiated Manifesta 9 and Z-OUT, which can both be seen as a logical sequel to the activi- ties of the house for contemporary art. Manifesta 9 In February 2010 it was announced that the European Biennial, Manifesta 9, would be coming to Limburg. From the very beginning Z33 s role was a pioneering one. Not only did Z33 initiate the idea of the Limburg candidacy for the biennial, it is also largely due to Z33 that Limburg managed to secure this internationally esteemed project. Manifesta is a nomadic Biennial that descends on a different European city or region every two years with politics, geo-politics or cultural history as its subject. It seeks out the boundaries of Europe and avoids large arts centres. Instead, it prefers to focus on the periphery, on less exposed and culturally less cultivated areas. Limburg is an area in motion, an interesting and complex region, which could act as a mirror for other regions in Europe. The region is involved in a reconversion process and is shedding an industrial past. The coal industry that developed in the first half of the 20th century left its mark on both society and the landscape. After the mines were closed between the 60s and the 80s, a new position had to be determined. This reconversion process is still continuing and gives rise to questions concerning the legacy of the mining industry. It is a legacy which not only encompasses the mine buildings (heritage) and the artificial landscapes, but also difficulties and riches resulting from the stream of immigrants from countries like Turkey, Poland and Italy. The fact that Z33 invited Manifesta to come to Limburg is perfectly in line with its policy as a house for contemporary art. It has adopted a slightly peripheral position within the Belgian (and by extension, Euregional) arts field. From this position Z33 looks at what is happening in the centre and seizing this as a strength from which it can offer a critical counterpoint. This approach characterises both Manifesta and Z33. Programme-wise, the activities of Z33 are also consistent with the aims Manifesta considers to be of paramount importance: social phenomena, scientific developments and intersections between various disciplines. Taking the lead in this international Biennial project propels Z33 s activities a step forward: from the local, supra-local and national to the international. Z-OUT Z-OUT is a largescale project aimed at realising a series of fascinating, top- [11] Introduction

7 [12] Introduction quality works of art in public space in Limburg. Art in the public space is essentially different from organising an exhibition or a museum. Whereas in a museum the confrontation with a work of art is limited to the visitor who has chosen to come there, in the public space the work of art interacts not only with the spectator and unsuspecting passers-by, but also with nature, the surrounding architecture and with the public space itself. Through its experience in the field of visual art, Z33 will act as the pivotal organisation for the realisation of this large-scale project. Concepts such as context and relational connections, which the house for contemporary art has incorporated into its own policy, are crucial guiding principles. Z-OUT is a special artistic project, which in the coming years will operate on the intersection between art, architecture and the landscape. Although there is still plenty of open space for art in Limburg, it must also be said that Limburg has more than one face. The province is a recent construction, made up of regions that each have their own history, landscape and characteristic features. It would therefore not be appropriate to seek an all-embracing story and graft various works of art onto it. Z-OUT divides the province into five areas and then highlights each one separately. Each cluster has its own story, which reflects the various faces of the province urban, landscape, cultural heritage, industry and so on. Haspengouw is one of the clusters that has been included in the programme because of its natural beauty the region is often described as Belgium s Tuscany. This clustering ensures that the works of art interact with each other and with their surroundings, thus generating a dynamism that extends for miles around. A series of temporary and permanent works of art will be developed at an international artistic level in various stages and spread over time. For each cluster, an internationally respected curator will be invited. In turn, artists also will be asked to make artistic suggestions. It is extremely important that the projects developed within the context of Z-OUT are supported by the area, the region, the inhabitants, local politics and so on. Z-OUT must not be a coercive vehicle that spreads its tentacles across a region and ensconces itself there unannounced. As early as 2009, Z-OUT was launched een interessant en complex gebied dat een spiegel kan zijn voor andere streken in Europa. De regio bevindt zich in een reconversieproces en schudt een industrieel verleden van zich af. De steenkoolindustrie die zich in de 1ste helft van de 20ste eeuw ontwikkelde, drukte een grote stempel op zowel de maatschappij als het landschap. Na de sluiting van de mijnen in de jaren 60 tot 80 moest een nieuwe positie worden bepaald. Dit reconversieproces is nog altijd gaande en doet vragen rijzen over de nalatenschap van de mijnbouw: de mijngebouwen (erfgoed), de artificieel ontstane landschappen, de problematiek en tegelijkertijd de rijkdom die voortvloeit uit de immigratiestromen uit ondermeer Turkije, Polen en Italië. Het feit dat Z33 Manifesta uitnodigde om naar Limburg te komen, ligt volledig in de lijn van haar beleid als huis voor actuele kunst. Z33 neemt een enigszins perifere positie in binnen het Belgische (en bij uitbreiding Euregionale) kunstenveld. Vanuit de periferie kijken naar wat er in het centrum gebeurt, en dit als sterkte aangrijpen om zich hier kritisch tegenover te stellen... Het is een aanpak die beiden kenmerkt. Ook programmatorisch sluit de werking van Z33 aan op de doelstelwith an ambitious pilot project. The Dutchman Florentijn Hofman created Badeend, a gigantic inflatable version of the small yellow bath duck that is universally known and loved. Hofman launched the duck onto the water in Hasselt in June 2009 and repeated this during the course of the summer in Genk, Neerpelt, Lommel, Maasmechelen and Oud- Rekem. The Badeend visited the five areas which make up Limburg, as a sort of foretaste of things to come. This pilot project also indicated the direction Z-OUT plans to take. Its aim is to radically change the perception of art in the public space and go beyond the phenomenon of sculptures on roundabouts and in parks. This outdated frame of reference is transcended here by means of ephemeral, temporary and participatory art projects. Both Manifesta 9 and Z-OUT are the result of the activities Z33 has been steadily building up for many years. The initiation and coordination of both projects closely follows the markers we have set out for ourselves: investigative processes, spatial and architectural contexts, multidisciplinarity, scientific and social developments, and so on. NL Nota s bij Z33 door Jan Boelen We stellen ons tot doel te reflecteren over maatschappelijke en wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen. Concreet vertaalt zich dat in thema s die het alledaagse centraal stellen, een focus die ook impliciet doorschemert in het werk van de kunstenaars. Het proces dat aan de tentoonstelling voorafgaat, is minstens zo belangrijk als de tentoonstelling, het eindproduct zelf. Hoe een tentoonstelling gepresenteerd wordt, is nauw verweven met de onderzoeksmatige onderbouw. Met een kritische houding ten aanzien van de eigen werking, wordt er gestreefd naar een diepe, inhoudelijke context. Form follows content. De research die aan een project voorafgaat, wordt ook meer en meer zichtbaar gemaakt. Een tentoonstelling wordt doorgaans als een afgewerkt product beschouwd maar Z33 wil hier de blik van de toeschouwer verruimen, het onderzoek transparant maken en delen. Ook het traject dat we samen met een kunstenaar doorlopen is cruciaal. Dit aspect is nauw verweven met de multidisciplinaire aanpak van Z33. Een beeldende kunstenaar functioneert op een gegeven moment als architect, een ontwerper ontwikkelt systemen die eigen zijn aan de beeldende kunst... Cross-overs tussen design, beeldende kunst, architectuur en dergelijke meer zijn essentieel en onlosmakelijk verbonden met onze werking. Het begrip kunstenaar staat zowel voor ontwerpers, beeldende kunstenaars, architecten of performers. De context van de begijnhofsite is van groot belang voor de ontwikkeling van tentoonstellingen. De context neemt lokale elementen mee in zijn antwoord op globale ontwikkelingen: context roept met andere woorden glokale associaties op. De contextgebondenheid maar ook de onderzoeksmatige aanpak heeft tot gevolg dat tentoonstellingen in Z33 niet vrijblijvend op andere locaties getoond kunnen worden. Projecten die in het buitenland overgenomen worden (cfr. OpenStructures, Thomas Lommée) kunnen enkel het concept overnemen en de uitwerking ervan adapteren aan de lokale context. De wereld naar Limburg halen en Limburg aan de wereld tonen Manifesta 9 & Z-OUT 2010 markeert een belangrijk keerpunt in de nog vrij jonge geschiedenis van Z33 als huis voor actuele kunst. Beleidsmatig varen we meer dan ooit een coherente inhoudelijke koers maar daarnaast treden we ook als initiator op van twee internationale projecten die buiten de muren van het Begijnhof treden en een veel bredere, Euregionale context zullen beroeren. Zowel Manifesta 9 als Z-OUT worden door Z33 geïnitieerd en kunnen gezien worden als een logisch vervolg op de werking van het kunstencentrum. Manifesta 9 In februari 2010 werd bekend gemaakt dat de Europese biënnale Manifesta 9 in 2012 naar Limburg zal komen. Z33 speelde hier van meet af aan de trekkersrol. Niet alleen lanceerde Z33 het idee van de Limburgse kandidatuur, Z33 speelde ook een cruciale rol in het binnenhalen van dit internationaal gewaardeerde project. Manifesta is een nomadische biënnale die iedere twee jaar in een andere Europese stad of streek neerstrijkt en de complexiteit van de regio op politiek, geo-politiek of cultuur-historisch gebied tot onderwerp neemt. Manifesta zoekt de grenzen van Europa op en vermijdt grote kunstcentra. In plaats daarvan richt zij zich liever op de periferie, op minder geëxposeerde en cultureel minder ontgonnen gebieden. 8 [14] Inleiding lingen die Manifesta hoog in het vaandel draagt: maatschappelijke fenomenen, wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen, snijvlakken tussen verschillende disciplines. Het voortouw nemen binnen dit internationale biënnaleproject, drijft de werking van Z33 een stap verder vooruit: van het lokale, het bovenlokale en nationale naar het internationale. Z-OUT Z-OUT is een grootschalig project met als doel de realisatie van een reeks boeiende en kwalitatieve kunstwerken in de openbare ruimte in de provincie Limburg. Kunst in de publieke ruimte is van een andere orde dan de organisatie van een tentoonstelling of de inrichting van een museum. Waar in een museum de confrontatie met een kunstwerk zich beperkt tot de vrijwillige bezoeker, treedt het kunstwerk in de publieke ruimte niet enkel in wisselwerking met de toeschouwer maar ook met de toevallige passant, de natuur, de architectuur in de omgeving, en de open ruimte. Door zijn ervaring op het vlak van beeldende kunst en vormgeving treedt Z33 op als spilorganisatie voor de realisatie van dit grootschalige project. Het kunstencentrum schreef begrippen als context en relationele verbindingen binnen haar eigen beleid in als cruciale leidraad. Z-OUT is een bijzonder artistiek project dat zich de komende jaren zal afspelen op het snijvlak tussen kunst, architectuur en het landschap. In Limburg is er nog veel open ruimte voor kunst en bovendien moeten we vaststellen dat Limburg niet één gezicht heeft. De provincie is een recente constructie van regio s die elk hun eigen geschiedenis, landschappelijkheid en karakteristieken hebben. Het is dan ook niet opportuun om te zoeken naar één overkoepelend verhaal en daarop verschillende kunstwerken te enten. Z-OUT deelt de provincie op in een vijftal gebieden die elk afzonderlijk worden belicht. Elke cluster brengt zijn eigen verhaal dat aansluit bij de verschillende gezichten van de provincie stedelijkheid, landschappelijkheid, cultureel erfgoed, industrie... Haspengouw is één van de clusters die omwille van haar landschappelijke karakter de streek wordt vaak getypeerd als het Toscane van België aan bod komt. De groepering in clusters zorgt er voor dat de kunstwerken met elkaar en met de omgeving interageren zodat er in de wijde omtrek een dynamiek ontstaat. In verschillende fases, gespreid in de tijd, zullen een reeks tijdelijke en permanente kunstwerken van internationaal artistiek niveau ontwikkeld worden. Per cluster wordt een internationaal gewaardeerde curator uitgenodigd om in de regio aan de slag te gaan. Kunstenaars worden op hun beurt uitgenodigd om een artistiek voorstel te doen. Het is van groot belang dat de projecten die binnen het kader van Z-OUT ontwikkeld worden, gedragen worden door de streek, de regio, de bewoners, de plaatselijke politiek... Z-OUT mag geen dwingend vehikel zijn dat zijn tentakels over een gebied spreidt en zich daar onaangekondigd nestelt. Z-OUT werd in 2009 reeds aangekondigd en gelanceerd met een ambitieus pilootproject. De Nederlandse kunstenaar Florentijn Hofman creëerde Badeend, een gigantische opblaasbare versie van het kleine, gele badeendje dat universeel gekend en geliefd is. Hofman liet de badeend in juni 2009 in Hasselt te water en herhaalde dit in de loop van de zomer in Genk, Neerpelt, Lommel, Maasmechelen en Oud-Rekem. De badeend deed als het ware de vijf gebieden aan die samen Limburg uitmaken, als een voorsmaakje op wat komen zal. Dit pilootproject toont ook aan welke richting Z-OUT wil uitgaan. Het wil de perceptie op kunst in de publieke ruimte bijstellen en voorbijgaan aan het fenomeen van sculpturen op rondepunten en in parken. Dit vastgeroeste referentiekader wordt hier overstegen door efemere, tijdelijke en participatieve kunstprojecten. Zowel Manifesta 9 als Z-OUT vloeien voort uit de werking die Z33 sinds jaren gestaag heeft opgebouwd. Beide projecten initiëren en coördineren sluit nauw aan bij de bakens die we voor onszelf hebben uitgezet: onderzoeksprocessen, ruimtelijke en architecturale contexten, multidisciplinariteit, wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen.

21 EN Ronny Delrue is a painter and a drawer. His work shows and warns us about the pollution of the landscape and the mind, linked to a desire for purity. Touching the Earth and the Sky Ronny Delrue Over a four-year time span between 2003 and 2008 Ronny Delrue was in residence at the European ceramic work centre (.ekwc) in s Hertogenbosch for three periods. During these periods he worked mainly with baked and unbaked clay. The artistic creations and ideas were collected in the IvOK project From Line to Stone, a study that culminated in a symposium and the exhibition at Z33. The exhibition focused on the trajectory from line to stone, from drawings to mind sculptures in baked and unbaked clay, but also went a little further, for instance, in the production of a video in cooperation with FLACC (2008). The video marked the end of the project and looked at the dream of the actual realisation of a mind sculpture as a main building in public space. During his research the artist cooperated closely with architects Wim Goes and Stéphane Beel. Together they reflected on the realisation of architectural mind sculptures in public space. The exhibition unfolded in a series of small rooms, in which drawings, paintings, sculptures in baked and unbaked earth, landscapes and videos were brought together. The drawings on the wall ran like a chronological timeline from 2003 to 2008 throughout the exhibition, thus representing the artist s thought process. Video, sculptures and landscapes were presented in reverse chronological order: the video as the most recent work, then the mind sculptures that resulted from the participation with the architects. The first sculptures to be realised at.ekwc i.e. the CCM (Centre for Cloning and Manipulation) and the bomb children came in at the end. The hanging of the exhibition was the result of a long period of work at Z33. For several months the artist converted part of the exhibition space to his studio, which remained visible to visitors as a silent witness.

23 NL Ronny Delrue is schilder en tekenaar. Zijn werk toont en waarschuwt ons voor de vervuiling van het landschap en de geest, gekoppeld aan een verlangen naar zuiverheid. Over een tijdspanne van een viertal jaren tussen 2003 en 2008 resideerde Ronny Delrue gedurende drie periodes in het Europees keramisch werkcentrum (.ekwc) in s Hertogenbosch. Hierbij stond het werken met gebakken en ongebakken aarde centraal. De artistieke creaties en ideeën werden gebundeld in het IvOK-project Van Lijn tot Steen, een onderzoek dat werd afgerond met enerzijds een symposium en anderzijds de tentoonstelling in Z33. De tentoonstelling plaatste het traject van lijn tot steen, van tekeningen tot mind sculptures in gebakken en ongebakken klei, centraal. De tentoonstelling ging ook een stukje verder, onder meer door de realisatie van een video die in samenwerking met het FLACC werd gerealiseerd in De video rondde dit geheel af met een blik op de droom van een mogelijke verwezenlijking van een mind sculpture als hoofdgebouw in de publieke ruimte. Tijdens het onderzoek werkte de kunstenaar ook nauw samen met architecten Wim Goes en Stéphane Beel. Samen met hen werd er nagedacht over de realisatie van architecturale mind sculptures in de publieke ruimte. De tentoonstelling ontvouwde zich in een enfilade van kleine kamers waarin tekeningen, schilderijen, sculpturen in gebakken en ongebakken aarde, landschappen en videowerk werden samengebracht.
