1 SURFfoundation Mini-Tender: Nieuwe leer en werkomgeving Early Modern Wiki Opleiding Engels Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Dit is een verslag van het gebruik van de wiki-library in de Sharepoint-omgeving in een cursus over literatuur in cultuurhistorische context aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in het kader van een SURF Mini-Tenderproject. Het project werd in augustus-november 2008 uitgevoerd door: Kristine Steenbergh (universitair docent Engelstalige letterkunde); Yolande Spoelder (adviseur ICT & Onderwijs aan de Faculteit der Letteren); alle studenten in de cursus Aspects of British Literature De cursus Aspects of British Literature ; 5 ECTS; tweedejaars studenten Engelstalige letterkunde; c. 35 studenten; twee uur werkcollege per week; thematisch geordende cursus met teksten als The Canterbury Tales, Doctor Faustus, Paradise Lost, Oroonoko en meer. Daarnaast Simon Schama s History of Britain, deel 1 en Uitgangssituatie en doel van het project Studenten Engelstalige letterkunde hebben in het eerste jaar van hun studie geleerd om literaire werken te analyseren. In het tweede jaar leren zij literaire werken te relateren aan de culturele context waarbinnen die werken geschreven werden. Deze cursus is de eerste in een reeks van cultuurhistorische cursussen. Bovendien leren studenten in hun tweede jaar voor het eerst een langer essay te schrijven waarin zij een literair werk niet alleen in zijn cultuurhistorische context moeten analyseren, maar ook gebruik moeten maken van secundaire literatuur. Dit wordt ervaren als een grote stap. Daarom zijn de cursussen Aspects of British Literature en Aspects of British Literature (periode 1 en 2 in het tweede jaar) opnieuw vormgegeven, om studenten meer bij deze stap te helpen, en om hen actief met de cultuurhistorische context aan het werk te zetten. Doel was om studenten in de eerste zeven weken ( ) in tien groepen thema s uit de cultuurhistorische context van de vroegmoderne tijd te laten verkennen. Om studenten in groepen aan een tekst te laten werken, voldoen de functionaliteiten van Blackboard niet. Daarom hebben wij een SURFgroep ingericht waarin de studenten in een wiki samen kunnen werken. Iedere groep kreeg een thema toegewezen (bijvoorbeeld religie, kolonisatie, leescultuur, gender, misdaad en straf, etc.), en schreef daarover pagina s in de wiki. Studenten maakten daarbij gebruik van bronnen uit de bibliotheek. Op die manier wilden wij studenten stimuleren actief met de stof bezig te zijn. Omdat iedere groep specialist wordt op het thema dat zij bestudeert, hoopten we dat de docent in de werkcolleges (2 uur per week) gebruik kon maken van de opgedane expertise door studenten op hun 1

2 specialismen aan te spreken en op die manier aan de discussie te laten bijdragen. Ook zou de docent in de colleges kunnen verwijzen naar het materiaal dat zich in de SURFgroepen-Wiki vormde, om op die manier de kennis in de Wiki bij de colleges te betrekken. Daarnaast vormt deze verkenning van een cultuurhistorisch thema een ideale voorbereiding op het essay dat studenten in de tweede periode (weken 8-15 van het eerste semester) schrijven. In dat essay bestudeert iedere student individueel een werk van de lijst vanuit het perspectief van het thema dat hij/zij in de eerste periode verkende. Omdat het essay argumentatief is, en niet beschrijvend zoals de Wikipagina, leren studenten duidelijk het verschil tussen deze twee soorten teksten. Ook zullen zij zich zekerder voelen bij het opbouwen van hun eigen argument over een tekst, omdat zij kunnen steunen op het inhoudelijke groepswerk dat zij in de eerste periode in de SURFgroepen-Wiki deden. 2. Opzet van de wiki in Sharepoint In een Surfgroepen-omgeving ontwierpen wij een Sharepoint-site met daarin een wiki-library. Daarnaast gebruikten we de kalender voor het vermelden van deadlines, twee surveys (week 1 en week 7 van de cursus) om de mening studenten te polsen, de document library voor het inleveren van samenvattingen, en we plaatsten een handleiding voor de technische aspecten van het gebruik van de wiki (bijlage 1). Naast deze Sharepoint-omgeving was er voor de cursus ook de Blackboardomgeving die aan de faculteit standaard wordt gebruikt. Daarin stond alle informatie over de cursus, en ook een document over de rol van de wiki in de cursus (bijlage 2). In de wiki zetten we tien thema s klaar, en maakten vast de eerste pagina voor ieder thema aan. Daarnaast maakten we een pagina voor de bibliografie aan. De screenshots hieronder laten zien hoe de wiki er toen uitzag. 2

3 1. De homepage van de wiki 2. Een van de thema-pagina s, waarop de links naar twee sub-pagina s waren klaargezet, een voetnoot was voorgedaan en een discussie-sectie was aangemaakt: In de bibliotheek maakten we een collegeplank met daarop een selectie van bronnen die voor het schrijven in de wiki gebruikt konden worden. Verdere bronnen moesten studenten zelf in de bibliotheek vinden. In het eerste college besteedden we een uur aan de introductie van de cursus als geheel, en het wiki-project in het bijzonder. Daarbij maakten we studenten eerst bewust van de noodzaak een andere omgeving dan Blackboard te gebruiken voor dit project, en legden ze daarna uit hoe de wiki werkt. Na deze eerste introductie van het 3

4 project, vroegen we studenten zich te registreren bij Surfgroepen, en als eerste handeling in de teamsite een survey in te vullen. 3. De eerste survey In de eerste survey vroegen we studenten naar hun ervaringen met wikis, en naar hun verwachtingen van de cursus en het wikiproject. Vijfentachtig procent van de studenten gaf aan dat zij regelmatig een wiki (zoals Wikipedia) raadpleegden op het internet, maar slechts vier studenten hadden wel eens iets gewijzigd in een wiki. Negen studenten hadden nog niet eerder samen aan een tekst gewerkt; 16 studenten hadden dat wel. Op de vraag of de vorm van dit project hun enthousiasme voor het behandelde materiaal in deze cursus zou vergroten, antwoordden alles studenten met ja. Er was in de eerste week dus erg veel animo voor het wikiproject! 4. Het project in weken In de eerste weken van de cursus vormden de studenten groepjes van 3 of 4 en lazen zich in hun thema in. Daarvoor gebruikten zij de boeken op de collegeplank, en soms extra boeken die zij in de bibliotheek opzochten. In de derde week moest iedere student individueel een samenvatting van een hoofdstuk of artikel over hun thema plaatsen in de document library van de wiki, als voorbereiding op de opdracht. Ondertussen kon de docent in de werkcolleges al voorzichtig informeren naar het leesproces, en polsen of studenten bij het bespreken van de literaire teksten van die week vanuit het perspectief van hun thema specifieke kennis konden inbrengen in de discussie. Dit ging gaandeweg de cursus steeds beter studenten vonden het leuk om te laten zien wat ze gelezen hadden. Na deze inleesperiode moest er geschreven worden: in week 5 moesten de teksten van de inleidende pagina over het thema en twee sub-onderwerpen van iedere groep compleet met illustraties in de wiki staan. De instructie was om bij het schrijven je medestudenten als lezers voor te stellen: de informatie die studenten zich eigen had gemaakt tijdens het inlezen, moesten ze nu doorgeven in hun eigen woorden. In Wikimedia zochten studenten naar passend illustratiemateriaal, dat zij van een onderschrift en bronvermelding moesten voorzien. In week 6 lazen alle groepen elkaars pagina s, en legden hyperlinks waar dat toepasselijk was. Op die manier konden alle groepen zien wat de anderen gemaakt hadden, en leerden zij bovendien iets van elkaars pagina s. In week 7 werden de groepspagina s beoordeeld door de docent, met gebruik van een beoordelingsformulier dat vantevoren in Blackboard was geplaatst (zie bijlage 2). 4

5 3. Een voorbeeld van een wiki thema-pagina [fragment] 5. Evaluatie docent Het project is mij erg goed bevallen. Het kostte extra werk om het project in de zomer samen met Yolande Spoelder voor te bereiden, een didactisch plan te maken en me in te werken in de de Surfgroepen-omgeving, en om tijdens de cursus de activiteiten in de wiki in de gaten te houden en te begeleiden, maar dat werk heeft wel een mooi project opgeleverd. De studenten waren enthousiast over het gebruik van een wiki en over de cursus als geheel. In de werkcolleges waren de discussies daarom van een hoger niveau, en de algemene kennis van de periode was hoger dan in andere jaren. Studenten waren meer bij het materiaal betrokken. Het samenwerken aan een tekst en het bekijken van het werk van de andere groepen voegde echt iets toe aan het leerproces. Waar ik onvoldoende rekening mee had gehouden, was de werkdruk voor studenten. Uit de afsluitende evaluatie van het wikiproject bleek dat studenten teveel tijd aan deze vijfpunts-cursus hebben besteed. Naast de wiki moesten zij ook nog gemiddeld 4 teksten per week en hoofdstukken uit A History of Britain lezen. Als ik de wiki volgend jaar weer gebruik, zal ik andere delen van de cursus moeten inkrimpen, om de werkdruk te verlagen. Daarnaast zijn er een aantal technische aspecten die ik graag verbeterd zou zien in de wiki in Sharepoint. Het is bijvoorbeeld niet mogelijk om tegelijkertijd aan een pagina in de wiki te werken: dit leidt tot een safe conflict. Studenten werkten daarom veelal in groepjes achter één pc, of schreven hun teksten in Word, om ze daarna pas op de wiki te posten. Dit is niet wat ik me had voorgesteld ik dacht dat de wiki studenten zou stimuleren om ook virtueel samen te werken aan één tekst. Omdat er geen ingebouwde discussion tab is, wordt discussie in de wiki ook niet echt gestimuleerd. Studenten gaven aan vooral MSN, mail, of de telefoon te gebruiken om te overleggen over de tekst. Het is ook erg ingewikkeld om plaatjes op te nemen in de wiki. Wie geinteresseerd is, vindt de technische instructies in bijlage 1. Nog moeilijker is het 5

6 om een link naar een specifieke plek op een pagina te maken, omdat studenten daarvoor de html-edit-mode moeten gebruiken. Deze functies zijn in de onlineapplicaties die studenten regelmatig gebruiken (weblogs, facebook, etc.) veel intuitiever. Het zou fijn zijn als dat in Sharepoint ook zo was. 6. Evaluatie - studenten In week 7 vulden 23 studenten de afsluitende evaluatie in de Surfgroep in. Hieronder enkele vragen die voor deze projectbeschrijving relevant zijn: Op de vraag of de wiki in Surfgroepen een nuttige omgeving was voor dit project, antwoordden 20 studenten met ja. De andere 3 antwoordden met ja en nee. Veel van de 23 antwoorden kwalificeren wel dat het jammer is dat je niet tegelijk aan een tekst kunt werken vanwege de save conflicts, dat het plaatsen van anchors en plaatjes veel tijd en moeite kostte, en dat het edit-scherm niet werkte in Mozilla Firefox. Anderen merken op dat de wiki wel een enorm voordeel heeft ten opzichte van papier: je kunt elkaars werk zien vorderen, en dat werkt motiverend. Tweeentwintig studenten vinden dat het wikiproject hun interesse in het onderwerp van de cursus heeft vergroot. Veel van hen merken wel op dat het veel werk was: er moest veel gelezen worden voor de cursus in het algemeen, en ook in het redigeren en het verzorgen van de layout van de wiki ging veel werk zitten. Op de vraag of studenten de wiki-omgeving gebruikten om samen aan hun teksten te werken, werd opvallend vaak nee geantwoord. Studenten merken op dat het te indirect is, dat er save conflicts optreden, of dat MSN, mail, telefoon, of een bijeenkomst op de VU de voorkeur hadden voor overleg. Het uiteindelijke resultaat van dat overleg via andere wegen werd dan op de wiki geplaatst. Sommigen gebruikten wel de discussie-sectie onderaan de pagina om elkaar boodschappen door te geven over het verloop van het project. 6

7 Working in a wiki in SURFgroepen [bijlage 1] Faculty of Arts, VU, August 2008 Activating your account You will receive an from the sender noreply@surfgroepen.nl containing instructions on how to activate your account with a link in the mail. If you click on the link, you will arrive on a page where you can register for SURFgroepen. If you did not receive an , please check whether the message didn t end up in your junk mail folder, because the server thought it was spam. Logging in As soon as you have an account, you can log into SURFgroepen. 1. Go to 2. Click on sign in. Lost username or password If you lost your username or password, click on Reset Password or Request Username. You will receive your new password or username by mail. Entering a team site The team sites that you have access to are in the list my teamsites. To enter the team site, click on the link. If the site you need to work in (Early Modern Wiki) is not in the list, please mail Kristine Steenbergh (k.steenbergh@let.vu.nl) to ask her to add you to the site. Working in the wiki SURFgroepen was made with SharePoint by Microsoft and it is therefore optimalised for viewing in Internet Explorer. It is possible to use browsers from other companies, such as Firefox or Safari, but not all functions can be used in these browsers, such as the smart edit window. Editing texts on wiki pages Not all pages in a team site are wiki pages. A wiki page is recognisable by the button History in the top right corner of the window, which allows you to view previous versions of the page. If you were given writing rights by your lecturer, a wiki page is easy to edit by clicking on the Edit button. Changes to the page can be saved by clicking OK. By selecting text and clicking on one of the smart edit buttons, you may italicize text, make it bold. Creating links to other pages in the wiki To create a link to another existing or non-existing page in the wiki, you type the name of that page in double square brackets. For example, if you type Bibliography in a wiki page, a link to a page called Bibliography will automatically appear. By clicking that link and adding content to the new page, you have created a 7

8 new page. By putting the name of an existing page in the wiki between double square brackets, you make a link to that page. Would you like to link to a page without using that page s name as your link? The solution is to use a vertical line (called colon or pipe ) between the link name and the name of the page you want to link to. For example: link name or see this page on religion. Linking to a specific place on a page You may want to link to a section on the same, or a different page (to make a link to a footnote, for example). It is possible to do so, but you need to enter into the HTML-editing mode - so it is only for the brave. What you need to do, is to make an (invisible) anchor in the place that you want to link to, and then link to that anchor. For an example, see my test page at the bottom of the wiki content page, which links to test page 2 as well as to the bottom of the same page. Add Anchors Click the source button (top right, the one with the <><> signs on it) to switch to HTML source view. Add your anchor wherever you need it in the source, for example: <a name=nameofanchor></a> In this example, you replace the word "nameofanchor" with a relevant word, obviously, such as "reformation". When done adding anchors, click OK to go back to the rich text view. You won't see your newly created anchor in the richt text view, nor when you look at the page in the wiki after you saved it. But it is there, and now you can link to it. Linking to Anchors To create links to the anchors you just created, you can do this easily from the rich text toolbar by clicking on the Hyperlink button. In the Hyperlink dialog, for the Address, specify the root relative URL for the page, in the following format: 1/Name of Wiki Page.aspx#nameofanchor In this format, you need to replace the text after theme 1/ with the relevant text for your page. For the page you are reading now, for example, this would be: How To Use This Wiki Library.aspx. You can get this url by going out of edit mode on the 8

9 page, and back to viewing the page in regular view mode. Copy the URL from the address bar. Add the named anchor portion (e.g. #nameofanchor) to the very end of the url. Again, "#nameofanchor" should be replaced by the name you gave to your anchor earlier, such as "#reformation." NB: I have changed this slightly from my earlier directions on linking on the same page, and now it also works for linking to a specific place on a different page. See my test page for an example, which links to the word "nest" on the second test page. Creating new pages There are two ways to create a new page. The first way was explained above. By making a link to a non-existent page, that page is created as soon as you click the link. A link that refers to a non-existent page is recognisable by the dotted line underneath the link. The second way is by clicking Recent Changes and then View All Pages. This is where you can create a new page that has not (yet) been linked to another page, by clicking on the New button and selecting New Wiki Page. Restoring a page If you need to restore a previous version of a page, click History at the top of the page. You can then click on any of the dates to view the page as it existed on that date. When you find the version that you want to restore, click Restore this version on the toolbar. Viewing incoming links You can see which pages link to the current page by clicking Incoming Links at the top of the page. Images Inserting images into your wiki pages seems easy, because there is an image button among your smart-edit buttons. This ease is deceptive, however, because if you insert an image from the web into your page, everyone who clicks on the page will receive a pop-up message telling them that there are safe and unsafe items on the page. This message will drive you and your fellow users crazy. This is obviously a design error in SURFgroepen, but for now the only way to avoid it is the following, roundabout method: 1 Download the picture you want to use by right-clicking it and selecting save as. Remember where you saved it, so you can find it again on your computer. 2. Click on Picture Library in the left-hand menu in the wiki. 9

10 3. Click upload and look up the image on your computer. Make sure the Overwrite existing files option is NOT selected. Click OK. 4. You now get a form in which you can change the name of the file if you want to, as well as add some properties (you don t have to). Click OK. 5. Your picture is now in the library, and will be marked with a green new! icon. 6. You might think you re done now, but you re about half way through. 7. In the picture library, click on the picture you want to use. A page opens with your picture and some text below it. Now, this is important, you need to click on the picture again. You should now see an empty page, with just your picture on it. 8. Copy the URL in the address bar above this picture. It starts with: library/ Please check that it does, because if it doesn't, you need to go back to step Now return to the wiki page that you were working on (click the back arrow and then use the menu to navigate). 10. There, click Edit and then click the image icon in the smart edit button bar. Now paste the URL of your imported image into the textbox that appears. 11. Click OK. 12. You re done, congratulations! The image should now appear on your page, without a pop-up to warn you about unsafe items. Let me know if you run into trouble or if you spot mistakes in this guide. Thanks! You will be taken to the SURFgroepen support site, which despite its name is mainly in Dutch, but does contain some English articles see the link in the list on the right hand side of the page. 10

11 The Early Modern Wiki [bijlage 2] The course Aspects of British Literature is different from the courses you took in your first year in several respects. Firstly, although you build on the skills in literary analysis that you acquired in your first year, you will now read literary texts in their cultural context as well. Secondly, you will be writing a longer analytical and argumentative essay in the second half of this course, in which you analyse a work of literature in its cultural context, and in which you make use of secondary literature. In order to fully submerge yourselves in early modern culture, you are going to create your own reference work: the Early Modern Wiki. A wiki is a collection of related web pages with information that can be adapted and added to online. A well-known example is Wikipedia.org, an online encyclopaedia. We are going to create our own online reference work on early modern cultural history. I hope that this is going to be an experience from which you learn a lot about early modern culture, about writing and collaborating and I also hope that we will have a lot of fun with the wiki! In the first seven weeks of Aspects of British Literature, you are going to work in groups of 3 or 4 students on a topic in early modern cultural history, to produce a set of pages on this topic in our own Early Modern Wiki. By doing your own research in the library and on the internet, and fusing it with the knowledge of your group members, you will become thoroughly familiar with one aspect of early modern British culture. By presenting your knowledge to the other groups on your Wiki page, the other group members will be able to share in your knowledge. Moreover, you will be able to comment from the perspective of your own topic on the literary texts that we discuss in the course seminars. After writing a descriptive text on the topic in Aspects of British Literature , you will analyse a literary text from the syllabus from the perspective of your topic in an argumentative essay of words in the second half of the course (Aspects of British Literature ). In this essay, you will use your knowledge of the topic you wrote on in the Wiki to analyse a literary text in its cultural context. Thus, the Early Modern Wiki helps you both to get to grips with early modern cultural history, and to experience the difference between descriptive and argumentative writing. The wiki The Early Modern Wiki is going to be an encyclopaedia on topics from early modern history, written by you. You will work in groups of up to five students on one of the following ten themes: 1. Religion 2. Reformation 3. The Civil Wars 4. Gender 5. Aristocracy 6. Colonialism 11

12 7. Crime and Punishment 8. Science 9. Print culture, readers and reading 10. Death Choosing your theme We kick off in the first week of the course, when you form groups and claim your theme from the list above. In the first lecture, you will also be introduced to the ins and outs of working in a wiki, so make sure you are there! A separate document on how to log into the wiki is in Blackboard; an instruction on how to use the wiki is in the wiki. Make sure you check these out as well! In week 1, you will be asked to log into the SURFgroep with the wiki for the first time. There will be a short student survey waiting for you there to fill out online. That way, we know that you made it into the SURFgroep, and we will learn more about your internet skills from your answers which are completely anonymous, by the way. Reading and summarizing On the course bookshelf in the study room on the 11 th floor, you will find selected books about these themes (see also the document on the course bookshelf in Blackboard). You can also use the UBVU catalogue to find more books on your topic in the library. In the first three weeks, you are all going to dive into these books to read up on your subject, and become specialists. Each of you will post a summary ( words) of a particular book, part of a book, or chapter in the Summaries section in the wiki. NB: Yes, it says books and not websites and I mean it! I know a wiki is an online thing, and it is tempting to use its big brother Wikipedia to find what you need, but that is not what this exercise is about. The idea is that you gather the knowledge yourselves, to write your own descriptive texts in your own wiki! Writing the pages After you have fully submerged yourselves in your topics, it is time to start writing your wiki pages. Each group needs to write a general introductory text on their theme ( c words) and choose two specific aspects of that topic to write two topic pages (c words each) on. If your theme were e-learning, for example, you would write a general introductory text in which you tell your readers what e-learning is. Then, you could for example write a topic page on the use of blogs in secondary schools, and one on the merits of the use of wikis in academic education. You can be as creative as you want, and choose any aspect of your theme, big or small. Write your pages using your own words: do not simply copy the text out of the books your read! Use the knowledge that you gathered as a group to write a clear and informative text about your topic. Always refer to the sources of the knowledge that you communicate, using the footnotes and the bibliography. Your style of writing should be lucid and formal, as is proper to academic writing. You need to think carefully - and perhaps discuss this first in the 12

13 discussion section on the bottom of each page - about how you are going to structure your 1500-word pages. Will there be subsections with separate headings, for example? All three pages are the responsibility of the whole group. You can of course divide the work amongst you, but the end product is your shared group responsibility. That is why you need to keep an eye on all three group pages, and improve the text if you see the opportunity, or make suggestions for improvement in the discussion area. You can correct spelling mistakes, improve formatting, suggest a more efficient structure, or make suggestions regarding content. A wiki is a collaborative environment, and I really hope that you enjoy working on this as a group, with all the synergy (and possible frustrations!) that may bring. Sources and bibliography Because I want you to get to know the library better, your group needs to use at least three books as sources for your text. You may not use internet sites as your source, but you may add them to the bibliography. The bibliography is the last page in the wiki, in which we collect all our references. It not only lists the books that you used according to theme, but also contains your short description of the book and why you thought it useful. In that way, the bibliography can help you all to write your essays in the second Aspects course you will know where to go when you are looking for more information on a subject. Images On your pages, you might want to add some images that are relevant to your theme. According to netiquette, you can only place images on your own site if they are not protected by copyright. Fortunately, Wikimedia has a huge collection of such images available online: go to commons.wikimedia.org and search their database. If you use their images, please acknowledge the source (in smaller font or a different colour, for example) below the image on your page. NB: if you insert an image by unsuspectingly clicking the image icon, you will get a nasty message saying that there are safe and unsafe items on your page each time you subsequently load the page. This message will drive you and your fellow users crazy! This is obviously a design error in SURFgroepen, but for now the only way to avoid this is by first importing the image into the picture library, and then linking to its URL in that library. See How to use the Wiki for more detail. Wiki schedule and deadlines Week 1: Introduction to SURFgroepen and the Wiki; division into groups; choice of topic. Logging in for the first time and filling out the online student survey. Week 2: Collection of material for summaries reading the material and summarizing it. Week 3: Writing of individual summaries, posting them in the wiki. Deadline for your summary: Thursday 18 September. 13

14 Week 4: Writing the collective texts (main text and topic pages) together with your group members. Make an appointment for a day in this week on which you can all work together on the text! Week 5: Adding illustrations and the annotated entries in the bibliography. Make an appointment for a day in this week on which you can all work together! Deadline for the wiki pages: Thursday 2 October [texts; illustrations; bibliography]. Week 6: All groups read each other s work, and cross-link to each others pages if they see connections between themes, events or persons discussed in their pages. Deadline for the completed Early Modern Wiki: Thursday 9 October. Week 7: Your wiki pages will be graded this week! How to write in a wiki Here are some guidelines to help you find your way into writing in a wiki. They are partly based on Weblogs and Wikis Style Guide by D.C. Use only those images you have permission to use, and give credit. - Write to make this a comfortable place to work. - There doesn't seem to be much profit in writing off the cuff on a wiki - even in the discussion area. WikiStyle is a thoughtful, crafted style. - Concision is noble. Concision keeps the signal to noise ratio up (high signal, low noise), and it allows others to contribute - From: How will your Wiki pages be graded?
