12 Baddeley and Andrade (2000) Conducted 7 experiments: - Non-clinical population - Non emotional images (sounds, photos, images from magazines, shapes) 5 studies had a cross-modality design Found modality specificity but also contributed a role to the central executive

13 Research by Kemps &Tiggemann (2007) Healthy subjects (30 undergraduates) Recall emotional memory under three conditions: - counting - eye movements - staring at a screen Reported memory to be primarily visual and visual disruption decreased emotionality and liveliness of the memory more than auditory suppression (counting)

14 Research by Kemps &Tiggemann (2007) Second experiment: Instructed 68 undergraduates to form specifically visual or auditory images. Three conditions: - counting - eye movements - staring at a screen Interaction effect between the dual task and modality of the memory Emotionality and liveliness of the memory decreased more when taxing occured in same modality

24 AND? Effect of TIME No difference between auditive and visual imagery!! YOU CAN WORK WITH BOTH AND DON T NEED TO FOCUS ON THE VISUAL ASPECTS.

26 AUDITIVE TAXING! Auditive better than control, but not better than visual taxing. Discussion: - Was it a more difficult task or is the effect larger because it was taxing the phonological loop?

31 Balancing order PRELIMINARY RESULTS ON 31 PATIENTS - Age 40,(SD=11.9) - 11 women, 20 men - 100% used medication (N=31) (MOST COMMON AP & BENZO) - 51,6% (N = 16) had multiple diagnoses (psychotic disorder + mood disorder/anxiety disorder/addiction/other) - 33,3% (N= 5) at least 1 personality disorder - mean age of onset hearing voices 23,1 (SD = 10,3)

36 Ik ga straks een aantal vragen stellen over jouw herinnering aan het horen van het nare geluid of stem. Op een gegeven moment zal ik je vragen je te concentreren op bepaalde delen van de geluiden of de stem(men) in de herinnering. Met name zal ik je vragen naar het stukje wat nu het naarste is om te horen. Daarna zal ik je vragen om met je ogen de stip op deze balk te volgen, terug te tellen met één cijfer per seconde of te staren naar een stip. Ik wil je vragen vanaf het moment dat je de stip volgt, terugtelt of staart naar de stip je min of meer op te stellen als een toeschouwer, die waarneemt wat er door hem heen gaat. Het kunnen gedachten, gevoelens, beelden, emoties of lichamelijke reacties zijn. Alles is goed. Volg maar gewoon wat er opkomt, zonder te sturen en zonder jezelf af te vragen of het wel goed gaat. Je hoeft het geluid of stem waar we mee beginnen niet vast te houden. Het geluid of de stem is slechts het vertrekpunt van waaruit alles kan en mag opkomen. Af en toe vraag ik je opnieuw naar het geluid of stem te luisteren om te controleren hoe naar het nu nog is om dit te horen. Het is onmogelijk om het fout te doen, zolang je maar gewoon volgt wat er is en wat er opkomt. Vertel me dan nu in grote lijnen hoe jij je het geluid of de stem momenteel nog herinnert, vanaf het punt waar die voor jouw gevoel begint tot het punt waar die voor jouw gevoel echt eindigt. Beschrijf de gehele geluidsherinnering in grote lijnen. Het gaat om jouw geluidsherinnering en niet zo zeer om wat er precies is gezegd of hebt gehoord. Laat de patiënt de hele herinnering vertellen en stimuleer hem/haar door, indien nodig, op verschillende momenten op een nieuwsgierige toon te vragen: en hoe ging het verder? Tot het daadwerkelijke einde van de herinnering is bereikt. PROTOCOL: WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A THERAPIST? If your patient mentions auditive intrusions; work with that.. BUT HOW?
