8 Beste reistijd Het belangrijkste seizion voor trekkings in Peru vindt plaats van eind april tot aan midden oktober, Dit is de droge, maar 'koude' periode met de beste vergezichten in de Andes en de passen die open zijn. In de hooglanden van Peru, waar een gedeelte van deze reis zich afspeelt, kunnen de dagtemperaturen variëren van 0 C tot 25 C, met een daling 's nachts tot -10 C. November en maart is het warme maar natte seizoen. De stevige regenbuien beginnen meestal niet eerder dan tegen het einde van januari. Van april tot aan oktober schommelen de temperaturen in Lima overdag tussen de 15 C en 25 C, met een behoorlijke afkoeling 's nachts. Van oktober tot maart liggen de dagtemperaturen tussen de 20 C en 28 C. Dagtemperaturen in Cusco variëren van 10 C oplopend tot een aangename 25 C. Het programma Dag 1: Aankomst Cusco The adventure begins in Cusco, the gateway to the Sacred Valley known for its Spanish colonial architecture and ancient Inca history. The afternoon is free for you to explore the city before an evening trip briefing where you'll meet your fellow Yomads travellers and learn more about the upcoming days. Maaltijden: geen

9 Dag 2: Cusco The morning is reserved for a city tour of Cusco and its surrounds, where every alleyway and corner turned brings another suprise in the form of superbly constructed Inca walls or architecturally extravagant colonial structures. The afternoon is free for you to spend at leisure, taking in the sights or enjoying a drink overlooking the plaza. Maaltijden: ontbijt Dag 3: Piuray Today is spent at Piuray Outdoor Center where there is no shortage of activities to choose from. Piuray, a beautiful lake located in the community of Pongobamba, is known for its outstanding scenery of hills with farm terraces and forests as well as views to the snowcapped Sacred Valley mountains. Here, you'll have the option to choose from water and land based activities that include kayaking, stand-up paddle, mountain biking, and hiking. Dag 4: Pumamarca & Ollantaytambo Departing Piuray, drive towards Ollantaytambo via the Patacancha Valley, stopping along the way in the community of Pallata (3180m). Here, you can observe the native Quechua way of life where crops are sown and textiles woven with simple hand tools that have been in use for centuries. A steep ascent will take us to the archaeological complex at Pumamarca (3390m), a small Inca settlement that managed the irrigation system of the Inca terracing below. We'll then begin hiking through the terraced complex of Choquecancha amid impressive views of the surrounding landscape. A three-hour descent through these farmed terraced areas will bring us to Ollantaytambo in time for lunch and a visit of the Ollantaytambo ruins, one of the few Inca towns that has passed the test of time to maintain its original Incan design from several hundred years ago. Here, we'll explore the Inca canchas, ingenious stonework, cobbled streets, and an extensive water system that still functions today. Maaltijden: ontbijt, lunch Dag 5: Begin Choquequirao trekkking Heading north towards Lima, we leave the city behind and cross into Antapampa as Mt Salkantay and Humantay followed by Pitusiray, Chico, and Veronica come into view. After visiting Tarawasi and Sayhuite, a stone said to be a carved map of the Inca Empire, we'll pass through Cachora and arrive at Capuliyoc (2850m) and the start of our hike. Setting out with our daypacks we walk along the edge of the mountain, getting our first view of the Apurimac Canyon and the trail that lies ahead. We begin our first descent and camp by the river at a small campsite at Chiquisca. Dag 6:Trekking naar Marampata Early in the morning, a river crossing marks the start of the day. From here, we will ascend the steep trail and begin to appreciate the environment and vegetation on both sides of the Apurimac Canyon. After breaking for lunch in a meadow, the hardest part of the day is behind us with the trail leveling out as we approach the hanging valley that contains the site of Choquequirao. Tonight, we'll camp in a flat section of Marampata.

10 Dag 7:Trekking naar Choquequirao Today is reserved for exploring the extended settlement of Choquequirao and its various archaeological sites throughout the hillside that overlooks the Apurimac River. We'll pass the stream of Chunchumayo where the views to the other side of the canyon are spectacular. The restored buildings throughout the area that were once used for storage, living quarters, a garrision, and ceremonial sites are impressive, with first reports of visiting the complex dating back to In the evening, we'll set up camp at Choquequirao Terrace (3000m). Dag 8: Trekking naar Maizal Ascending from our campsite to the Choquequirao Pass (3250m), we enter cloud forest to find polylepis trees, epiphytes, and bromeliads. Heading towards the Yuracmayo River, we will descend from the pass alongisde terracing that once supplied Choquequirao. The trail then changes again as we ascent to Maizal, a baloncy with a stunning view of the Yurahmayo and Yanama gorges as they join and rush towards the Apurimac Canyon. We'll enjoy the evening from our campsite looking west as we watch the sunset from Maizal. Dag 9: Trekking naar Yanama Climbing steeply towards Mina Victoria, first an Inca and then later colonial mine, we'll hike along the hill Qoriwayrachina where recent archaeological explorations have taken place. Once over the pass at 3900m, we'll break for lunch and begin our descent to the village of Yanama, taking in the views of the mountain country and Mt Pumasillo towering above us and our campsite in Yanama below. Dag 10: Trekking naar Lucmabamba Once again we'll begin the day heading up, following a trail through the Yanama Valley past farms to the trailhead below the Quiswar Pass (4180m). Crossing the pass is a spectacular sight, especially on a clear day when trekkers are rewarded with views to Mt. Salkantay and Humantay. Descending on the winding trail to the valley of Totora below, we'll pass Hornopampa to Totora town (3375m) and meet the vehicle that will take us to our next campsite. Passing settlements of farms growing coffee and tropical fruits, we'll drive to Lucmabamba (2134m) and set up camp for the night. Dag 11: Trekking naar Machu Picchu Traversing dense cloud forest amid the sounds of bird calls, we pass the pre-inca site of Llactapata. From here, we're provided with a magnificent view of Machu Picchu from its northern face. Descending into the Urbamba Valley, we have the chance to take a refreshing dip in the Aobamba stream as we follow the path to the hydroelectric plant (1900m). In the afternoon, take the train to Machu Picchu village where we'll spend the night. Maaltijden: ontbijt, lunch

11 Dag 12: Machu Picchu en Huayna Picchu This morning, we'll visit the iconic citadel of Machu Picchu (2430m). Occupied for about a century, the site was abandonded at the time of the Spanish Conquest and largely unknown to the outside world until it's discovery in There's plenty of time to explore the sites and learn about its history during our guided tour. For those that want to see Machu Picchu from another angle, we'll have the opportunity to ascend Huayna Picchu (2720m), a prominent peak rising over Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, return to Cusco. Maaltijden: ontbijt, lunch Dag 13: Cusco The day is free for you to spend at leisure, exploring new areas or revisiting your favourites from the beginning of the trip. Maaltijden: ontbijt Dag 14: Reis eindigt Cusco The trip concludes after breakfast. For those flying home today, we'll transfer to the airport.
