3 introduction inleiding Interactive experiments in public space... that s not easy to imagine. So, what is Image Radio? Have you ever heard of or seen interactive art? It s art that you can influence or manipulate, or art which reacts on its environment. That s the kind of art we have on display during Image Radio, with the emphasis on screens. Throughout the city we show a diversity of installations. Some are build out of giant LED screens, some with beamers and screens. There is even one installation built from mosquitonets with projections on it, where you can walk through. If you re interested in the scientific background of screens in public space, we advise you to visit the symposium on November 3rd, at the Van Abbemuseum. Enjoy Image Radio 2007! Interactive experiments in public space... dat klinkt ingewikkeld, maar dat is het eigenlijk niet. Wat is Image Radio? Misschien heb je het al wel eens gezien, of er in ieder geval van gehoord: interactieve kunst. Dat is kunst die jij zelf kunt beïnvloeden of manipuleren. Het is kunst die reageert op haar omgeving en de mensen in die omgeving. Dat is wat we laten zien tijdens Image Radio, met de nadruk op beeldschermen. Op allerlei plekken in de stad staan diverse installaties. Sommigen bestaan uit mega LED schermen, anderen zijn gebouwd van beamers en projectieschermen. Er is zelfs een installatie die bestaat uit een enorme hoeveelheid musquito-nets, waar je doorheen kunt lopen. Als je meer geïnteresseerd bent in de wetenschappelijke achtergrond van schermen in de openbare ruimte, bezoek dan het symposium op 3 november in het Van Abbemuseum. When you look down as if into an illuminated pool you see a black-and-white aerial view of urban street scenes and parks. The view may hover in place, or it may move to stomach-lurching effect as if you w ere looking down from a helicopter. On the ground tiny men, women and children come and go. All of this looks strikingly real at first. The movements of the people are at once w eirdly robotic and life-like. But then you realize that it is all animated. The combination of trompe l oeil illusion and artificiality gives the effect of a hyper-real dream. More info? old post office Nieuwsgierig loop je naar de rand van de projectie. Het lijkt alsof je in een verlicht zw embad kijkt. Je ziet in zw art-wit een stedelijke omgeving met straten en parken. Af en toe bew eegt het beeld. Je hebt het gevoel dat je vanuit een helicopter op het geheel neer kijkt. Op de grond zie je kleine mannen, vrouw en en kinderen heen en w eer lopen. Alles ziet er realistisch uit, maar als je goed kijkt, lijken de mensen in het beeld bijna robots. Dan realiseer je je dat het een animatie is. De combinatie van trompe l oeil illusie en het buitenaardse karakter, geeft dit alles het effect van een hyper-reële droom. Meer informatie?

5 jack backrack follow the leader Jack Backrack is an artist and research scientist, focusing on robotics, sensor networks, programming languages, and new art making platforms. He studied cognitive science, computer science, and visual arts. sociale studies waarin hij groepsgedrag filtert en in een framewerk plaatst. Meer informatie? His latest work, Follow the Leader, is an AI structured improvisation formed from over 200 simulated robots. Each robot runs an identical program and communicates only with nearby robots. Movement occurs through distributed and collective decision-making: leaders are elected, chains are formed, and personal space is maintained. This is the second in a series of social studies where collective behaviors are distilled and rendered within a dance framework. More info? Jack Backrack is kunstenaar en onderzoeker, met de focus op robotics, sensortechnologie, programmeertaal en platforms voor nieuwe kunstvormen. Hij studeerde cognitieve wetenschappen, informatica en visuele kunst. Zijn nieuwste werk, Follow the Leader, is een AIgestructureerde improvisatie gemaakt van 200 gesimuleerde robots. Elke robot stuurt een identiek programma aan en communiceert alleen met robots in de buurt. Beweging gebeurt door verspreiding en collectieve besluitvorming. Leiders worden gekozen, kettingen gevormd en de persoonlijke omgeving wordt gehandhaafd. Dit is het tweede werk in een serie van old post office

6 erik conrad palpable city Erik Conrad is an artist, researching the relationship between the phenomenal understanding of the body and the experience and understanding of space. Palpable City is a large-scale tactile installation. Augmenting the everyday activity of walking with a tactile experience, challenges participants to think about the interrelation of vision and touch in their experience of city space. The void of purely optical space is thickened with palpable sensations, creating a tactile space that can only be explored by moving through it. In Palpable City technology is used to make the usual experience of space unusual. More info? Erik Conrad is een kunstenaar die onderzoek doet naar de relatie tussen buitengewoon begrip van het lichaam en de ervaring en kennis van de ruimte. Palpable City is een installatie die visuele elementen voelbaar maakt. Door de alledaagse activiteit als lopen aan te vullen met een voelbare ervaring, daagt het de deelnemer uit na te denken over de onderlinge relatie tussen zicht en tast bij de beleving van de stad. De leegte van puur optische ruimte wordt verdicht door voelbare sensaties die een tactiele ruimte vormen, die alleen kan worden ontdekt door er doorheen te bewegen. 7 matthias oostrik E4 interactive light wall Matthias Oostrik successfully finished his studies of interactive media at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam at the end of For two years now he has worked as freelancer, making video and video installation productions and collaborating with other artists from various disciplines. The Interactive Light Wall is a low-resolution LED w all combined with a sensor system monitoring the presence and movement of people. This movement is used to transform the w all s patterns into new shapes and colors. The system is designed for pu blic spaces, combining a futuristic effect with a safe and w arm feeling. More info? Matthias Oostrik slaagde aan het einde van 2004 met succes voor zijn studie op het gebied van interactieve media aan de Film en Televisie Academie in Amsterdam. De afgelopen tw ee jaar heeft hij gew erkt als freelancer, en ontwikkelde hij video en video installaties. De Interactive Light Wall is een low-res LED muur, die door middel van een sensorsysteem aanw ezigheid en bew egingen van mensen opmerkt. Op basis daarvan worden patronen op de muur in nieuw e kleuren en vormen omgezet. Het systeem is ontworpen voor gebruik in de pu blieke ruimte. 8 brecht debackere z-city In Z-City the city is characterized by its architecture. Stations, churches, flats, squares; they function as orientation points for both inhabitants and visitors of a city. Buildings appear or disappear behind others. Or they disappear from view when you turn around a corner. In this piece the viewer is presented with an alternative view on the city. An interactive kiosk enables the visitor to browse a map of the city and set a course to his desired destination. The selected route is then visualized, creating a rhythmical, abstract visual impression of the city. More info? In Z-City wordt de stad gekenmerkt door haar architectuur. Stations, kerken, flats, pleinen; ze functioneren als oriëntatiepunten voor zowel inwoners als bezoekers van een stad. Gebouwen verschijnen of verdwijnen achter anderen of raken uit het zicht bij het inslaan van zijstraat. Dit werk biedt een alterntieve kijk op de stad. Door middel van een interactieve kiosk kan de bezoeker een route kiezen. Deze wordt op een scherm gevisualiseerd en geeft je een rhytmische, abstracte presentatie van de stad. 9 HFR-LAB cityscan HFR-LAB is a collaboration between three graphics and video-makers. In their work, characterized by an impeccable aesthetic, images melt into graphics that breakdown and compose landscapes. HFR-LAB presents Cityscan. The project aims to generate a visual metaphor that produces new correspondences between sound and vision. Generating an intricate layering of cityscapes that scroll and flicker in time with music. Cityscan becomes an audio-visual pattern where the rhythm achieved is a metaphor of the rhythm of the city itself. Cityscan is one of a growing series of rhythmic meditations on various cities. More info? HFR-LAB is een samenwerking tussen drie grafisch vormgevers en videomakers. In hun werk, dat wordt gekenmerkt door onberispelijke esthetiek, vloeien beelden over in grafiek, die vervolgens transformeert en in landschappen veranderd. Cityscan richt zich op het ontwikkelen van een visuele metafoor die leidt tot nieuwe overeenkomsten tussen beeld en geluid. Er wordt een intrinsieke gelaagdheid opgebouwd van stadscontouren, die vervolgens scrollt en knippert synchroon met de muziek. Cityscan wordt een audiovisueel patroon waarin het resulterende ritme een metafoor wordt van de stad zelf. Cityscan is onderdeel van een groeiende serie ritmische meditaties van diverse steden. 12 screenings video art During Image Radio 2007, a presentation of various new and international video artwork will be shown in the BLOB. The BLOB is an art pavilion which travels around the campus of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. For the first time the BLOB will be stationed outside the campus, in the centre of Eindhoven. Olga Mink, who works as a video-artist in the Netherlands, has selected several works to be presented in the BLOB. Tijdens Image Radio 2007 wordt in de BLOB deze selectie van nieuwe en internationale videokunst vertoond. De BLOB is een kunstpaviljoen dat tot nu op allerlei plekken op de campus van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven heeft gestaan. De BLOB staat tijdens Image Radio voor het eerst buiten de campus, in het centrum van Eindhoven.

13 adger stokvisch hypergraphia Adger Stokvisch experiments with the possibilities for artistic use of computer technology and software as medium and is professionally occupied with research and development of interactive, site-specific computer-driven installations. Hypergraphia is a software project that generates an abstract style grammar defined by an algorithmic set of rules. Mathematical equations are implemented in computer code, which define a broad spectrum of dynamic geometrical forms. The visual results are shown on three large projection screens combined to form a single tiled projection on de Lichttoren. More info? Adger Stokvisch experimenteert met de mogelijkheden voor artistiek gebruik van computertechnologie en computercoding als middel. Als artist in residence bij MAD emergent art center ontwikkelde hij in de aanloop naar het festival in ons eigen laboratorium een softwareproject. Met behulp van wiskundige regels en formuleringen, uitgevoerd in computercode, genereert Hypergraphia een breed spectrum aan dynamische geometrische vormen. 14 brian knep drift WEI Brian Knep combines art, architecture and science in work that has been shown widely throughout the world. He uses custom software to create pieces that are dynamic and react to changes in their environment. In Drift organic shapes grow, shrink, split and join across five projected panels, drifting slowly from one panel to the next. Each panel imposes a different set of rules governing movement and growth, and as a shape crosses a panel boundary, its look and behavior change. Although the panels look very different, the growth on each is based on the same set of chemical models, with simple changes to the parameters of these models causing large changes in behavior. More info? Brian Knep combineert kunst, architectuur en wetenschap in werk dat overal ter wereld tentoon wordt gesteld. Hij gebruikt zelfgemaakte software om werk te creëren dat dynamisch is en reageert op veranderingen in de omgeving. In Drift zien we organische vormen groeien, krimpen, of splitsen op vijf aan elkaar geschakelde schermen. Elk beweging wordt gestuurd door een eigen set van regels die voor elk scherm anders zijn. Daarom verandert een vorm van grootte als het van het ene scherm naar het andere over gaat. Hoewel elk scherm er anders uitziet, wordt de groei bepaald door hetzelfde chemische model. Met simpele veranderingen in parameters veroorzaak je grote veranderingen in gedrag. Meer informatie?

15 LAb[au] pixflow Founded in 1997 and based in Brussels, LAb[au] mainly creates interactive artworks, audiovisual performances and scenographies, for which it develops its own software and interfaces. Its four members (Manuel Abendroth, Jérôme Decock, Alexandre Plennevaux and Els Vermang) also run since 2003 a digital design gallery, MediaRuimte, in the centre of Brussels. PixFlow is a generative work based on a vector field to translate moving particles/pixels into flows. This vector field is based on a mutual influence in between vectors and particles resulting in an unsuspected highly evolving behavior. It is displayed on 4 plasma screens as a seamless flat space. More info: Opgericht in 1997 en gesitueerd in Brussel, creëert LAb[au] (Manuel Abendroth, Jérôme Decock, Alexandre Plennevaux and Els Vermang) voornamelijk interactieve installaties, audiovisuele voorstellingen en scenografiën, en ontwikkelt hiervoor haar eigen soft- en hardware (scenografie en interfaces). In 2003 richtte LAb[au] de digitaal designgalerij MediaRuimte op. PixFlow is a generatief werk dat gebruik maakt van een vectorveld dat bewegende partikels / pixels in golven vertaalt. Het vectorveld is gebaseerd op een wederzijdse invloed tussen vectors en partikels, resulterend in een onvoorspelbaar veranderlijk gedrag. 16 crea composite cubic Crea Composite was born from the meeting of 3 artists who come from various artistic backgrounds: graphic design, vj, cinema, music; and from 3 different nationalities: Swiss, Belgian and French respectively. They got together for the first time in 2006 to produce an audiovisual installation project at the MediaRuimte gallery in Brussels. Following that rewarding experience, they created this crew to continue their dynamic work. Their general approach consists of getting beyond traditional aspects of passive spectators experiencing audiovisual sources. More info? temporary art centre Crea Composite is ontstaan uit een ontmoeting van drie kunstenaars met een verschillende achtergrond: grafische vormgeving, vj, film, muziek, en met een verschillende nationaliteit: Zwitsers, Belgisch en Frans. Ze kwamen voor het eerst bij elkaar in 2006 voor het project rond een audiovisuele installatie in de MediaRuimte in Brussel. Sindsdien werken ze veel vaker samen om hun dynamische werk te kunnen voortzetten. Centraal in hun werk staat het doorbreken van de traditionele aspecten in de beleving van audiovisuele installaties. Students and staff of Fontys University of Applied Sciences (IMD department), designed and built playful interactive installations. 18 Urban Screens prelude of virtual reality in public space? November 3 2:00-5:00 pm Van Abbemuseum Auditorium free entrance symposium Speakers and forum will address the acceleration of new media penetrating public space as seen from artistic and sociological views. This phenomenon is also known as Urban Screens, and is a breakthrough in the artistic and public participation into the design of city space. The speakers are presenting from different backgrounds, and show examples and video. A forum discussion with speakers and public is closing the formal part, after which there is a drink in the restaurant of the Van Abbemuseum. Speakers: Mirjam Struppek works as urbanist, researcher and consultant in Berlin. With a background in Urban- and Environmental Planning, she has lectured and published essays with a special focus on the livability of urban space, public sphere and its transformation and acquisition through new media. George Fifield is a media arts curator, writer, teacher and artist. He is the founder and director of Boston Cyberarts Inc., a nonprofit arts organization, which produces the Boston Cyberarts Festival. Fifield has written on a variety of media, technology and art topics for Artbyte, Bomb, Communication Arts, Digital Fine Arts, The Independent Film and Video Monthly, Sculpture Magazine and Art New England. Evert van Loenen is Principal Scientist in the Media Interaction Group of the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven. His research activities are in the field of Ambient Intelligence, where he works on out-of-the-box application design, natural user system interaction, context awareness and distributed systems. Het fenomeen staat ook bekend als Urban Screens, en is een doorbraak voor nieuwe artistieke en publieke participatie in de vormgeving van de omgeving. De sprekers benaderen dit onderwerp vanuit verschillende invalshoeken, en laten voorbeelden en videobeelden zien. Een forumdiscussie met sprekers en publiek sluit het formele gedeelte af.
