2 Instituut voor Engineering Bij het Instituut voor Engineering draait het om kwaliteit, innovatie en passie. De technologie in al haar aspecten passeert bij het instituut de revue. Van mens en natuur tot aan het product en bedrijf. Technologie is niet meer weg te denken uit ons dagelijks leven. De gezondheidszorg, ICT of de energiewereld, techniek speelt een steeds grotere rol. Bij engineering gaat het om het totale proces om producten en systemen te ontwerpen en te maken, maar ook om te beheren en uiteindelijk weer af te breken. Het Instituut voor Engineering biedt opleidingen in de domeinen Werktuigbouw, Elektrotechniek, Sensortechnologie, Human Technology en Technische Bedrijfskunde. Studenten worden opgeleid om in een internationale omgeving te werken en praktijkgericht onderzoek uit te voeren. Er is nauwe samenwerking met het Kenniscentrum Energie en met het Centre of Expertise Healthy Ageing. De opleiding Advanced Sensor Applications (locatie Assen) is een internationale Honours Bachelor die zich richt op toepassingen van slimme sensor technologie in allerlei terreinen van samenleving en industrie. Het onderzoek in de sensor-labs in Assen richt zich onder andere op sensoren voor de gezondheidszorg en op autonome systemen. Institute of Engineering At the Institute of Engineering, the key is quality, innovation and passion. All aspects of technology are addressed. From human beings and nature, to products and companies, technology is present everywhere in our daily lives. The domains of healthcare, ICT and energy increasing rely on the important role technology has to play. Engineering is not only concerned with the total process of design and manufacturing products and systems, but also with maintenance and decommissioning. The Institute of Engineering offers courses in the domains of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Sensor Technology, Human Technology and Technology Management. Students are trained to work in an international environment and to carry out applied research. There is close collaboration with the Knowledge Centre Energy and the Centre of Expertise Healthy Ageing. The Advanced Sensor Applications programme (location Assen) is an international Honours Bachelor concentrating on the application of smart sensor technology in society and industry. Research undertaken in the sensor labs in Assen includes sensors systems for healthcare and the study of autonomous systems. Kenniscentrum NoorderRuimte Het Kenniscentrum NoorderRuimte richt zich met ruim vijftig onderzoekers uit de opleidingen Architectuur, Bouwkunde en Civiele Techniek, Facility Management, Advanced Sensor Applications, Human Technology en Vastgoed & Makelaardij op actuele ruimtelijke vraagstukken uit de praktijk. In het onderzoek staat de gebruiker centraal. Dit maakt een multidisciplinaire benadering noodzakelijk waarin gebruik wordt gemaakt van voorgenoemde diciplines. De onderzoeken richten zich op aspecten zoals duurzaamheid, leefbaarheid en sense-of-place op de verschillende aggregatieniveaus van regio, wijk, gebouw en inrichtingsconcept. NoorderRuimte levert maatwerk: het ontwikkelt multidisciplinaire kennis in nauwe aansluiting op vraagstukken uit de praktijk. Centre of applied research and innovation on area development NoorderRuimte The Centre of Applied Research and Innovation on Area Development NoorderRuimte is carrying out research in actual area-related issues. There are fifty researchers from the programmes: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Facility Management, Human Technology, Advanced Sensor Applications and Property & Real Estate. Within NoorderRuimte research the user is of central importance and, if possible, is involved or participating in the research. This makes a multidisciplinary approach necessary in which knowledge is used of the diciplines mentioned above. The research focuses on sustainability, quality of life and sense-of-place at different levels of aggregation: region, district, building and furnishing concepts. NoorderRuimte provides tailormade solutions, developing multidisciplinary knowledge in close connection to real life issues.

4 Lectoraat Smart Mobility Goede bereikbaarheid draagt bij aan welzijn en welvaart. Om deze reden wordt in de westerse wereld veel waarde gehecht aan hoge kwaliteit van vervoersystemen. Ondanks de hoge kwaliteit van onze vervoerssystemen voorzien ze nog niet in al onze behoeften. Bij vervoer per auto zijn er bijvoorbeeld behoeften op het vlak van: veiligheid, uitstoot, files, parkeren en het nuttig kunnen besteden van reistijd. Bij het openbaar vervoer bestaan er behoeften als: vervoer van deur tot deur, 365 dagen per jaar 24 uur per dag en zonder omweg. We staan aan de vooravond van een systeemsprong op het gebied van vervoer die invulling kan geven aan een aantal van de genoemde behoeften. Deze systeemsprong zal met name veroorzaakt worden door de komst van autonome voertuigen (auto s, bussen, treinen), mogelijk gemaakt door vergaande ontwikkelingen op het gebied van sensoren en ICT. Autonome voertuigen zijn voertuigen die kunnen rijden zonder bestuurder. De ontwikkelingen op dit gebied gaan razendsnel. De grote autofabrikanten (en Google) verwachten aan het einde van dit decennium de eerste autonome auto s commercieel op de markt te brengen. De impact van deze technische innovaties op onze samenleving zal groot zijn. Vanwege de snelheid en impact van de genoemde ontwikkelingen moeten we ons voorbereiden. Het lectoraat Smart Mobility wil met haar onderzoek bijdragen aan deze kennisbehoefte. Curriculum Vitae Niels van Steenis heeft werktuigbouwkunde gestudeerd aan de Universiteit Twente. Na zijn studie is hij gaan werken in de railbranche. Hier heeft hij een brede kennis opgedaan over materieel, de infrastructuur en de verschillende bedrijfsprocessen. In 2010 is Niels gepromoveerd (Universiteit Twente) op een onderzoek naar de problematiek van glad spoor, in de volksmond bekend als de problematiek van de blaadjes op de rail en de vierkante wielen. Binnen dit onderzoek heeft hij meettreinen ontwikkeld die de gladheidsproblematiek in kaart konden brengen. Bij dit onderzoek is hij aangelopen tegen de beperkingen van het spoorsysteem en heeft hij de kansen en mogelijkheden van ICT en sensortechnologie gezien. Beide aspecten zijn drijfveren geweest tot het nemen van het initiatief tot het opzetten van een lectoraat Smart Mobility.

5 Professorship Smart Mobility Good mobile accessibility contributes to overall wellbeing and prosperity. For this reason the western world attach great importance to high quality transport systems. Despite the advanced level of our transport systems, they still fail to meet all our needs. For transport by car, there are requirements in the field of safety, pollution, traffic congestion, parking and the ability to optimise the time spent driving. In the case of public transport the following are universally required: a door- to-door and round -the-clock service, which is operational 365 days a year without detour and delay. We are on the verge of a system shift in transportation, capable of realising the needs mentioned. This shift will be caused by the advent of autonomous vehicles (cars, buses and trains) and made possible by far-reaching developments in sensors and ICT. Autonomous vehicles are able to move without a driver and the technology involved is developing rapidly. The major car manufacturers, as well as Google, expect the first autonomous cars to enter the commercial market at the end of this decade. These technical innovations will have a large impact upon our society. However, we will have to prepare for such important changes. The Professorship Smart Mobility will endeavor to contribute to these knowledge needs. Resume Niels van Steenis has studied mechanical engineering at the University of Twente. After completion of his study Van Steenis began working in the rail industry. Here he has gained a broad knowledge of rolling stock, infrastructure and the various business processes. In 2010, Van Steenis finished a PhD (University of Twente) into the problems caused by slippery rail tracks. This is popularly known as the problem of leaves on the line and square wheels. The research of Van Steenis has led to measurement trains that are able to map the low adhesion problem. In his study, Van Steenis encountered not only the limitations of the rail system, but also the opportunities for ICT and sensor technology in developing solutions. Both are strong motives in establishing the Professorship Smart Mobility.

6 Lectoraat Sensor Technology & Computer Science Het wordt steeds makkelijker om te meten. Onze omgeving zit vol met sensoren, van simpele thermostaten tot complexe meetnetwerken. Maar meer meten betekent nog niet meer weten. Sensor systemen vragen om een solide wiskundige basis, om begrip van de natuurkundige, biologische of sociologische processen die gemeten worden. Sensor systemen vragen ook om slimme computer architecturen om te zorgen dat ruwe meetgegevens ook daadwerkelijk in zinvolle informatie wordt omgezet, waarmee adequate actie kan worden genomen. Het lectoraat Sensor Technology & Computer Science richt zich op dit grensvlak tussen elektronica en ICT en zoekt naar nieuwe manieren om complexe processen te modelleren. Daarbij gaat het niet alleen om nieuwe slimme sensoren, maar vooral om de manier waarop we die in samenhang kunnen gebruiken. Dat is nodig om de energietransitie te ondersteunen, om de kwaliteit van de zorg te verbeteren, om nieuwe industriële processen mogelijk te maken. Wat daarbij steeds belangrijker wordt zijn autonome systemen die gebruikers ondersteunen in omgevingen die steeds complexer worden. Curriculum Vitae Marco de Vos studeerde sterrenkunde in Leiden en promoveerde daarin aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in Hij ontwikkelde daarna software systemen bij ASTRON, het Nederlands Instituut voor Radio astronomie. Van 1999 tot 2005 leidde hij de technische ontwikkeling van het LOFAR sensor netwerk. Daarna was hij ASTRON's Director of R&D tot hij in 2010 Managing Director werd. Hij is nauw betrokken geweest bij de ontwikkeling van grote onderzoeksprojecten en publiek-private samenwerkingen, het meest recent bij het ASTRON & IBM Center for Exascale Technology (DOME project). Sinds 2012 is hij als deeltijd lector verbonden aan het Hanze Institute of Technology, nu samengegaan met het Instituut voor Engineering. Zijn onderzoeksinteresses liggen vooral bij systeem modellen en architecturen, in het bijzonder holistische control loops waarmee bestaande systemen meer autonoom kunnen worden gemaakt.

7 Professorship Sensor Technology & Computer Science Measuring becomes ever more easy. Our environment is full of sensors, ranging from simple thermostats to complex measurement networks. But making measurements does not lead directly to knowledge. Sensor systems require a solid mathematical basis and an understanding of the physical, biological or sociological processes that are being measured. Sensor systems also require smart computer architectures to ensure raw measurement data is turned into meaningful information that can lead to adequate actions. The Professorship Sensor Technology & Computer Science focusses on this area, whereby electronics and ICT meet to seek new ways to model complex processes. More than just developing new smart sensors, this requires new ways to combine existing sensors in new contexts. This research is needed to support the energy transition, maintain the quality of healthcare and to enable new industrial processes. In all these domains autonomous systems play an increasingly important role, supporting end-users in ever more complex environments. Resume Marco de Vos studied astronomy in Leiden and holds a PhD in astronomy from Groningen University in He then developed software systems at ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy. From 1999 to 2005 De Vos led the technical development of the LOFAR sensor network. He later served as ASTRON Director of R&D until assuming the position of Managing Director in De Vos has been involved in setting-up a variety of large research projects and public-private partnerships, most recently the ASTRON and IBM Center for Exascale Technology (project DOME). In 2012 he joined the Hanze Institute of Technology, now known as the Institute of Engineering. His main research interests are system modeling and architectures, in particular holistic control loops that increase the autonomy of existing systems.
