3 Automatisatie 3D validatie Met deze stage kom je terecht in ons team van picture quality experten. Zij staan in voor de volledige picture quality validatie van alle TV s die in Brugge gemaakt worden. Naast deze validatie is dit team ook bezig met het voortdurend innoveren van de beeldprocessing om dit op een nog hoger niveau te brengen, en dit in een heel dynamische wereld van videobronnen (DVD, BluRay, YouTube, ). Je bent Master Industrieel Ingenieur Je hebt een sterke soft- en hardware kennis Deze stage zal zo n 3 maand in beslag nemen, te beginnen in januari (exacte periode te bespreken) Met de komst van 3D in de TV wereld, is er een nieuwe wereld opengegaan. Er zijn vele verschillende manieren om 3D te maken, gaande van actieve 3D tot passieve 3D, naar 3D zonder brillen. Al deze manieren vergen natuurlijk een hoop werk naar het valideren of goedkeuren van de 3D kwaliteit. Al deze activiteiten zijn principieel hetzelfde voor alle 3D architecturen en slorpen veel tijd op. Wat we willen bereiken met deze stage/thesis opdracht, is dat er een manier wordt gezocht waarmee er de validatie geautomatiseerd wordt. Hoe kunnen we dit verwezenlijken? 4 Analyse van antennenetwerk in stresskamer De stageplaats is in het labo voor omgevings-en stresstesten, waar men verschillende proeven op televisies doet om te kijken wat ze allemaal kunnen verdragen. In het labo voor omgevingstesten worden proeven gedaan op flat TV s. Tijdens deze proeven worden de TV s onderworpen aan verschillende temperaturen, klimaten en andere dingen die hen kunnen beschadigen. De TV s die getest worden kunnen aangesloten worden op 3 verschillende netwerken. Je bent Bachelor Elektronica Je hebt een hoge mate van zelfstandigheid Je kan goed in een team functioneren Je hebt een dynamische persoonlijkheid Voor deze stage is het de bedoeling dat je een studie maakt van de signalen op de verschillende antennenetwerken. Opdrachten: Studie van de signalen. Meten van de signaalsterkte op diverse locaties. Voorstellen welke signalen best kunnen gebruikt worden om bepaalde fenomenen vast te stellen. o Om de TV s te testen worden ze aangesloten op een antennenetwerk. Wij hebben de keuze tussen 3 netwerken, elk met een eigen doel. o o De signalen op dat netwerk moeten eens grondig bestudeerd/geanalyseerd worden, zodat wij weten welke signalen het beste zijn om onze testen uit te voeren. Ondertussen moet de stagiair ook alle netwerken opmeten om te zien als na een 6-tal jaar de niveaus nog in orde zijn. Evelien Rogie Filip Van Brugghe

5 Rekbare Electronica voor Ambilight Sinds enkele jaren maakt Ambilight deel uit van de Philips TVs. Het LED-verlichtingssysteem zorgt voor betere kijkervaring door de actie in het beeld uit te breiden naar de muur achter de TV. Ambilight moet de snelle evolutie in TV qua integratie en kost volgen. Hiervoor moeten er jaar na jaar stappen gezet worden in de Ambilight technologie. Het onderzoek en de ontwikkeling van deze nieuwe technologiën voor Ambilight gebeurt door het Ambilight team in Philips Brugge. Deze stage/thesis situeert zich in dit team. Je bent Masterstudent Burgerlijk Ingenieur aan de Ugent, gezien deze thesis kadert in een samenwerking met Ugent. Eén van de veelbelovende technologieën waar er naar gekeken wordt op de langere termijn is uitrekbare elektronica. UGent-CMST ontwikkelt technologie voor uitrekbare elektronische en sensorschakelingen. Deze schakelingen kunnen elastisch zijn. Na vervorming (uitrekking/plooien) keert de schakeling dan naar zijn oorspronkelijke vorm terug. De schakeling kan ook eenmalig vervormbaar zijn, dit wil zeggen, na vervorming blijft de schakeling in deze vorm. Het is deze laatste optie die voor Philips Ambilight interessant is.

6 Ambilight PCB Stretchable Flex Philips Bruges CMST UGhent In het kader van de stage / masterthesis zal de student nagaan hoe met rekbare technologie een Ambilight systeem kan gemaakt worden. Hiervoor zal CMST specificaties verschaffen voor de lay-out van de uitrekbare schakeling. Philips zal de specificaties verschaffen voor het Ambilight systeem. De schakeling zal door de student gerealiseerd worden op een rigide PCB, maar met de design rules van CMST's uitrekbare circuittechnologie. De uiteindelijke realisatie in deze technologie valt buiten de scope van de stage of masterthesis. 7 Automatisatie Gamma tuning Met deze stage kom je terecht in ons team van picture quality experten. Zij staan in voor de volledige picture quality validatie van alle TV s die in Brugge gemaakt worden. Naast deze validatie is dit team ook bezig met het voortdurend innoveren van de beeldprocessing om dit op een nog hoger niveau te brengen, en dit in een heel dynamische wereld van videobronnen (DVD, BluRay, YouTube, ). Je bent Burgerlijk Ingenieur Electrotechniek De stage zal 4 a 6 weken in beslag nemen, gedurende de maanden juli/augustus/september (exacte periode te bespreken) van In onze TV s streven we naar een gamma van 2.2. Bij de requirements naar de display leveranciers wordt als dit als wish-spec vermeld. De displays die we gebruiken hebben bij benadering deze gamma. Verschillende PQ processing kan deze gamma beïnvloeden maar we gaan er vanuit dat als we de volledige video-keten transparant zetten dat de gamma exact 2.2 is Als je echter een nauwkeurige meting doet van de gamma curve en uitzet tov een curve van een 2.2-gamma dan zie je dat er lichte afwijkingen zijn. Deze afwijkingen zijn zowel brand, panel type als batch-afhankelijk. In principe heeft de gewone klant geen nadeel van deze kleine afwijkingen. Het probleem zit echter bij de puristische reviewers. Bij elke TV die we ter analyse naar die reviewers sturen wordt de gamma opgemeten en moet die zo goed mogelijk de 2.2-curve benaderen. Indien de afwijking te groot is kan dit negatieve reflecties hebben in de score die deze reviewer toekent aan dat TV-model. Concreet gaan wij hier alle modellen die naar deze reviewers gestuurd worden manueel bijtuning naar die 2.2. We hebben al verschillende toolings gebruikt in het verleden om dit automatisch te laten verlopen maar de foutmarge was steeds te groot om dat er te weinig meetpunten zijn en/of teveel berekend wordt. De stage opdracht bestaat erin om onze huidige manuele tuning te vertalen naar een SW algoritme die hetzelfde doet maar zonder dat er interactie van een fysiek persoon nodig is. Bij het tunen worden een aantal stappen iteratief herhaald tot de afwijking van de ideale curve minimaal is: De curve wordt opgemeten Voor een bepaald level wordt de afwijking bepaald In de gamma LUT worden de indexen gezocht die invloed hebben op dit level Deze indexen worden aangepast De gamma wordt opnieuw opgemeten De nieuwe afwijking wordt vergeleken met de voorgaande en moet kleiner zijn Bovenstaande wordt herhaald totdat de afwijking binnen een bepaalde limiet is en dit voor alle levels. Naast deze validatie is dit team ook bezig met het voortdurend innoveren van de beeldprocessing om dit op een nog hoger niveau te brengen, en dit in een heel dynamische wereld van videobronnen (DVD, BluRay, YouTube, ). Je bent burgerlijk ingenieur Elektrotechniek De stage zal 4 a 6 weken in beslag nemen, gedurende de maanden juli/augustus/september (exacte periode te bespreken) van De meeste van de Philips televisies zijn momenteel uitgerust met Ambilight: geïntegreerde verlichting waarvan de kleur en intensiteit wordt aangepast afhankelijk van de beeldinhoud. Op die manier wordt het beeld perceptueel vergroot. Om nieuwe Ambilight algoritmes te kunnen uittesten, onafhankelijk van het gebruikte TV platform, hebben we nood aan een testbord dat videosignaal (LVDS) binnenneemt en SPI naar de ambilight modules stuurt. We beschikken reeds over een universeel testbord dat hiervoor kan gebruikt worden. Dit bord kan tussen ons TV platform en het display geplaatst worden. Het krijgt het videosignaal als LVDS binnen en stuurt hetzelfde signaal door naar het scherm. Op het bord staat een (Xilinx) FPGA met externe DDR en een aantal connectoren om allerlei toepassingen mogelijk te maken (beeld grabber, video algortimes testen, ambilight algoritmes testen). De stage-opdracht bestaat erin om een VHDL-applicatie te maken die het binnenkomende video analyseert en de ambilight processing van ons huidig TV-platform implementeert. Meer bepaald: Het integreren van bestaande IP-blokken (o.a. LVDS receiver) Implementatie van de bestaande ambilight algoritmes (beschikbaar in C-code) in VHDL. Hiervoor kan gedeeltelijk gebruik gemaat worden van bestaande Altera-code. Implementatie van een SPI driver Ter afronding van de stage wordt een kort verslag (bijhorende VHDL-code) en een demonstratie verwacht. 9 Sensoriële Intelligentie in TV Deze thesis situeert zich in de mechanische afdeling van de innovatiesite in Brugge. De focus in dit departement ligt op innovatieve en creatieve oplossingen voor nieuwe, consumentegerichte producten; ontwikkeld door creatieve, openminded ingenieurs en productontwikkelaars die je graag verder helpen. Je bent Master in Product Development / Industrieel Design of Master in (Elektro)Mechanica. Je hebt een sterke affiniteit met elektronica en software. Bij Philips willen we betekenisvolle innovaties brengen die het leven van alle mensen verbeteren. Dit kunnen we onder andere bereiken door verschillende soorten sensoren in een televisie in te brengen. Deze sensoren kunnen de televisie-ervaring volledig veranderen. De televisie interageert meer met zijn omgeving, reageert intuïtiever op de mensen die hem gebruiken, etc. Voor deze stage wordt er verwacht dat je een dergelijke TV-set mee helpt ontwikkelen. Je opdracht is simpel: Ontwikkel een nuttige applicatie die de televisie-ervaring verrijkt, en een bepaalde meerwaarde heeft voor zijn gebruikers. Arnoud Raskin started 14 years ago with his Mobile school -project in developing countries, Mobile school gives training and education to street educators through awareness raising activities. The Mobile school informs people about the reality of children and adolescents who live on the streets. By offering various multifaceted workshops they stimulate the society to become more aware and create an open mentality towards a range of global issues. Target is to define a smart and attracting product that differentiates from a tablet or common television and could be a standard device in kitchens. 20 TV out of 100% EU based materials Philips is a leading player in the television market and focuses on differentiating products by features and design, such as the iconic Aurea FlatTV, Ambilight FlatTVs, Cinema 21:9. The television business units are located in The Netherlands, Belgium, Singapore, France, Hungary, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. Along with the cinematic viewing experience with immersive light, perfect sound and easy connectivity, sustainability is at the heart of every development activity. By 2015 Philips wants to be a global leader in sustainability. They have set up a program, Ecovision 5, to achieve that goal. The introduction of the Econova TV in 2010 has shown what steps can be taken to make the TV business move towards the Ecovision 5 program. During the thesis project you will mainly interact with the TV development centre in Bruges. A personal company supervisor will help you manage your questions in the organization and reflect on your ideas and concepts. Your project will contribute towards increasing Philips collective knowledge of eco design and design for sustainability. 21 One of the commitments in Ecovision 5 is to double the global collection and recycling amounts of Philips products, as well as double the amount of recycled materials in these products (compared to 2009). Closed loop systems (Cradle-to-Cradle inspired) are a logical consequence of this. However, even though the final TV assembly lines for products sold in EU are situated in Hungary, the suppliers delivering parts or subassemblies to this facility are located all over the world with a strong emphasis on China. This makes it difficult to initiate closed loop material systems. In addition, Philips is not actively involved in take back and recycling activities of its TV s as this activity is covered by collective take back and recycling systems. Your task is to investigate if Philips can make an ambitious step towards a closed loop materials system. The assignment is to develop a TV that can be sourced 100% in the EU (this can include EEA countries). What would such a 100% European TV look like? Are there ways to communicate that this is a closed-loop TV through its design and packaging? Your first task will be to make an overview of today s practices; visualizing and calculating the geographical materials flows for a chosen Philips TV to establish a reference. This will mean defining the current TV from element, material, part, up to sub assembly. Building on this work it is the intention to identify what elements, materials, parts, up to sub assemblies could then be totally sourced in the EU, and how this could be represented in the design of a new TV. The consequential environmental and economic savings or costs need to be calculated. Given the logistical impact of the thesis, the purchasing department will be consulted for transportation and supplier data, the mechanical department for housing materials, the electrical department for PCB materials and display materials. 22 OLED based illumination systems for Philips Ambilight Ambilight is a lighting system invented by Philips Electronics that generates light effects around a TV screen that correspond to the video content. This creates a larger virtual screen and a more immersive viewing experience. Current Ambilight systems use an array of RGB LEDs to project light onto the surrounding wall or emit an aura of light from the front border of the TV set. The created light patterns have to fulfill several criteria specifying the intensity distribution and color uniformity, to obtain an optimal viewing experience. Philips is constantly striving to improve the visual quality of the Ambilight feature and to reduce the total system dimensions. The use of organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices as light source for Ambilight systems could allow taking the next step in this ongoing evolution. OLEDs are thin, flexible surface emitters whose features are quite different from inorganic LEDs that can be considered point sources. If we want to exploit the properties of pixilated OLED devices to create improved Ambilight architectures, this will require novel optical configurations and design algorithms than those currently used. Micro optical structures can be used to shape the emitted OLED light distribution in order to create the envisioned light halo onto the surrounding wall or improve the visual appearance of the Ambilight front border aura. Civil/Industrial Engineer (student of the VUB) The goal of this thesis is to design novel OLED-based illumination systems for Philips Ambilight with advanced raytracing software. An important aspect of a realistic simulation model is the accurate representation of the light source. To develop such an accurate light source model, it will be necessary to characterize experimentally the spectral luminance of several OLED samples with sufficient detail. This measurement data should then be implemented in an advanced optical software tool (ASAP/Zemax). The design of the total optical system should guarantee the visual quality criteria of Ambilight systems and restriction of the total system dimensions should be taken into account. The use of micro-optical structures in combination with OLED devices is a promising approach to yield the necessary optical specifications with a very compact design. The potential of these components should be investigated in this respect. Micro-optical components with a good simulated performance can be prototyped and combined with OLED samples to develop small test devices. The detailed optical performance of such demonstrators should then be experimentally investigated in our labs. Part of the work should be performed at the site of the industrial partner Philips Brugge (Three or four weeks in total for acquaintance with the Ambilight technology and experimental tests). The modeling and demo work can be performed at the VUB although regular meetings are foreseen with the industrial partner.
