2 Voor getalenteerde en gemotiveerde studenten biedt de tweejarige research-master Letterkunde de mogelijkheid zich verder te specialiseren tot onderzoeker op het gebied van de literatuur. In deze opleiding verdiepen en verrijken studenten hun theoretische en methodologische kennis van het letterkundig onderzoek, doen zelf onderzoek op wetenschappelijk niveau (het resultaat dienst in principe publicabel te zijn in een refereed vaktijdschrift) en kwalificeren zij zich zo als zelfstandige onderzoekers die voldoende kennis en vaardigheden in huis hebben om aan een onderzoekstraject (als PhD) te beginnen. De research-master staat open voor gekwalificeerde studenten met een bachelordiploma op het gebied van de wetenschap, of de Duitse, e, Franse, Griekse, Latijnse of Nederlandse letterkunde, of een andere relevante opleiding aan een Nederlandse of internationale universiteit. De research-master is opgebouwd rondom drie kernvakken waarin de relatie tussen literatuur en samenleving centraal staat. Voor de lichting studenten die in september 2016 start met het programma, zullen de thema s van de kernvakken postkolonialisme, subculturen, en ecologische kritiek zijn. Daarnaast zijn er de modules Research Design I en II, waar je samen met alle humanities studenten werkt aan het ontwikkelen en kunnen verdedigen en positioneren van je eigen onderzoeksproject. Onderdeel van deze modules is het bijwonen van de graduate lectures en seminars, en andere (inter)nationale onderzoeksbijeenkomsten. Om hun individuele traject vorm te geven, volgen de studenten een vijftal mastercolleges uit de algemene masterprogramma s, een tutorial dat in nauw overleg met de mentor wordt ingevuld, en seminars aangeboden door één van de landelijke onderzoeksscholen (aanmelding geschiedt via de Graduate School of Humanities). De opleiding wordt afgerond met het schrijven van een scriptie. Hier kun je een schematisch overzicht van je studie vinden. Leemans Niveau 500 Aim of this course is introduce students to the field of environmental humanities and to train them in devising and executing a research project, based on a theoretical and historical texts, understanding of libraries, archives and other institutions that keep and provide access to relevant textual, or visual collections. The course focuses on finding, analysing and interpreting primary sources, while referring to various theories and methodologies of environmental humanities. Students work independently and discuss their results in a wider framework of historical knowledge. They will be trained to report both orally and in written form, at the highest academic level. This course offers an introduction into the recently booming field of Environmental Humanities, tested through a specific case study: the ecology of the early modern stock exchange. Contrary to our course tradition, we will not start with the theoretical framework, but we will start in the archives - researching the Amsterdam and other European stock exchanges as ecologies: a complex system of interction between buildings, human practices, nature and emotions. In period 2 we will deepen our research by providing a thorough introduction into the field of Environmental Humanities. In the case study, we will combine archival research with textual analysis and dgital humanities techniques (e.g. text and emotion mining, 3d representations). The second part of the course aims to familiarize students with key questions, concepts and theories in ecocriticism as well as environmental cultural history. Where the first part of this course is research-based, this part of the course is grounded in discussion of key texts in the field. The seminar focuses on the early modern period, exploring themes such as early modern views of the relation between humans and the environment, early modern ways of dealing with climate change and pollution, and early modern animal studies. The lecturer welcomes input from ReMA or PhD students who wish to suggest material or lead a session on a period or topic more closely related to their research: students are encouraged to connect the questions and issues discussed in this seminar to their own interests. Jansen Niveau 500 Taking cognizance of theoretical approaches to literature at an international level. Learning to set up a research project based on literature taught. Learning to critically assess secondary sources and setting up a theoretical arguments. In the Study of Literary Values a theoretical basis will be formed for studying the position and cultural functions of literary communication in society. International approaches to literature such as Cultural Memory, the Literary Archive, City Texts and World Literature will be introduced together with concepts such as literariness and fictionality, relationships between text and context, functions and effects of literature and the position of the intellectual/ author. South African case studies will often take centre stage. This subject is one of two core subjects for the research master. Using (film) narratology as our theoretical starting point, we will compare and contrast three novels with their respective film adaptations. We focus on the question what different ideological meaning-effects arise when transporting a narrative from one medium to another. Crielaard The aim of this module is to increase your knowledge of important Greek texts, to get acquainted with the research on those texts, and to learn to contribute to those academic discussions yourself. In this seminar you will read large extracts of both Iliad and Odyssey in the original and be introduced via secondary literature to important aspects of the research on these texts: 1) lexica; 2) oral theory; 3) epithets; 4) similes; 5) narratology; 6) intertextuality; 7) historical background; 8) Near Eastern literature (Gilgamesj); and 9) art (vase paintings). E.M. van Opstall You will acquire an overview over a fascinating body of narrative texts in Greek and Latin that is central to late antique and medieval/byzantine perspectives on life, literature, and religion. You will be able to participate in scholarly debates on literary and cultural-historical aspects of these texts. In Late Antiquity ( CE) new trends in storytelling come into existence in the Greek and Roman world. A completely new genre is developed: the spectacular saint s life (hagiography), with roots in classical models such as historiography, the novel and biography. Connected with these genres, the short story both as a self-contained form and as part of a larger narrative, becomes ever more prominent in the course of the subsequent millennium, eventually culminating in the works of Chaucer and Boccaccio. In this module, a representative anthology of saints lives and short stories will be studied in interdependence. C.M. van der Keur Intertextuality is one of the defining characteristics of Latin poetry, especially so in the case of Flavian epic. The aim of this class is to learn to appreciate the working of intertextuality in a text: what are we as readers supposed to do with the intertextual clues of the text. Roman epic flourished during the reign of the Flavian emperors (69-96 AD), as witness the fact that four epics have come down to us: Valerius Flaccus Argonautica, Statius Thebaid and Achilleid, and Silius Italicus Punica. Whereas these epic poets were often neglected and seen as mere epigones of Virgil, their poems are currently experiencing a major revival. This seminar will focus on the Punica, on the war of the Romans against Hannibal. Silius epic well illustrates a defining feature of Flavian poetry in its pervasive interaction with the literary tradition, for which it has justly been dubbed "the most intertextual of poems". Unlike the other Flavian epics, the Punica has a historical theme; we will see how Silius subtly combines historiographical and poetic strands to create a new and interesting narrative. Intertextuality is at the heart of this seminar: how does the poet create or alter meaning through allusion, often to multiple texts at once? We will study his engagement with Vergil s Aeneid and Lucan s Bellum Civile, between which the Punica appears to take a middle position, but also with various other, seemingly less obvious intertexts, including the interaction with the other Flavian poets. Among the other topics to be dealt with in this seminar are the muchdiscussed composition of the poem and its relation to the sociopolitical context of the Flavian era. Lectures and seminar, 2 x 2 hours a week The final score for the course is based on (1) individual oral presentation (30%), (2) written examination of individual reading list (70%). In dit college staat een werk centraal dat in de Nederlandse literatuurgeschiedschrijving nagenoeg onbekend is gebleven: een gedicht van de veelschrijver Lambert van den Bosch ( ) met de titel Der poëten lust-prieel of Dichtkonst, uitgegeven in Amsterdam in Het is een bewerking van de beroemde Ars Poetica van Horatius (Q. Horatius Flaccus, 65-8 v.chr.), en bijna dertig jaar ouder dan de veel bekender geworden Nederlandse Horatius-bewerking van Andries Pels uit Dat roept meteen allerlei vragen op: hoe `vertaalt Van den Bos de adviezen en richtlijnen van Horatius voor zijn Nederlandse tijdgenoten? Welke literatuuropvatting spreekt uit dit werk is die vergelijkbaar met die van de Frans-classicistisch georiënteerde Andries Pels, of spreekt er juist een andere geest uit? Is er overeenkomst, of juist verschil, met Vondels Aenleidinge ter Nederduitsche dichtkunste uit 1650, die ook wel als Horatius-bewerking is gekarakteriseerd? Maar ook andere vragen kunnen gesteld worden, ook al is er misschien niet overal antwoord op: waarom schreef Van den Bosch deze bewerking, voor wie? En waarom heeft niemand er ooit van gehoord? De titel van dit college presenteert Van den Bosch gedicht als een case-study binnen het onderzoek naar de poëtica en retorica in de renaissance. Koenen Insight in the function of the classics in the cultural history of the later 18th, the 19th and the early 20th century; detailed insight in classical receptions in connection with aestheticism, detailed insight in receptions of the classics in De Tachtigers, Dutch Symbolist en Modernist poetry; general knowledge of theories of reception. The aesthetic movements that rose in France (Baudelaire, Gautiér), England (Whistler and Wilde), and the Netherlands ( De beweging van Tachtig ) from the mid 19th Century onwards were strongly influenced by early Romanticism and therefore polemically opposed to classicism. Yet classical texts and ideas were absolutely central to aestheticism one has but to realize that virtually all Tachtigers (e.g. famous poets as Willem Kloos and Herman Gorter) started their intellectual development as a classicist. This course studies classical receptions in connection with aestheticism. David Rijser, assistant professor of Latin and contributor to NRC: Cultureel Supplement, will trace the essential role of classics first in Winckelmann and Kant, then in mid 19th Century France, and finally in the work and polemics of A.E. Housman and Walter Pater in England. Mieke Koenen, assistant professor of Latin and biographer, will first study the role of the classics in De Tachtigers and Dutch Symbolist poetry (e.g. J.H. Leopold). Then she will focus on the receptions of the classics, De Tachtigers and Dutch Symbolism in [a] the poetry of Ida Gerhardt, who also translated Lucretius, Vergil and Greek Epigrams, and [b] in Modernist Dutch literature. Two ACASA-commissioned public lectures by contemporary practicing poets on the theme of the heritage of aestheticism as well as on their receptions of Classical Antiquity are part of the program.
