1 Press Release (DUTCH) (FOR ENGLISH SEE BELOW) JOCELYN LEE SOLO SHOW Flatland Gallery From 10 March 2012 till 28 April 2012 Reception for the artist: Saturday March 10th, 4-6 pm Solo Tentoonstelling Jocelyn Lee FLATLAND Gallery is verheugd het onversneden directe werk van de Amerikaanse fotografe Jocelyn Lee in Nederland te introduceren. Jocelyn Lee kreeg begin 2000 de Guggenheim Fellowship uitgereikt voor fotografie. Vanaf 2012 zal FLATLAND Gallery haar in Europa vertegenwoordigen. Zij wordt tevens vertegenwoordigd door twee internationaal vermaarde galeries, Pace /MacGill Gallery (New York) en Rose Gallery (Santa Monica). Van 10 maart tot en met 28 april 2012 laat FLATLAND Gallery voor het eerst achtentwintig chromogene prints in de galerie in Utrecht zien. Tegelijkertijd toont FLATLAND Gallery het werk van Lee op Art Paris in het Grand Palais in Parijs, dat van 29 maart tot en met 1 april duurt. Een kennismaking van haar werk is eerder in februari 2012 door FLATLAND naar Art Rotterdam gebracht. Voor de tentoonstelling bij FLATLAND Gallery zal Jocelyn Lee naar Nederland komen en op de opening op zaterdag 10 maart 2012, van tot uur aanwezig zijn. De werken die in de solo show bij FLATLAND Gallery te zien zijn, zijn terug te vinden in haar onlangs door Steidl en haar New Yorkse galerie Pace/MacGill Gallery uitgegeven monografie Nowhere but Here. In deze monografie bevindt zich tevens een voorwoord van de gerenommeerde Amerikaanse dichter Sharon Olds. De werken in deze tentoonstelling vormen een afspiegeling van haar uitzonderlijke en originele werk dat niet als documentair, noch als niet documentair te omschrijven is. De keuze van haar landschappen, portretten en naakten kan het best omschreven worden als Raw ; in het Nederlands zou je spreken over direct.

Jocelyn Lee kreeg begin 2000 de Guggenheim Fellowship uitgereikt voor fotografie. Vanaf 2012 zal FLATLAND Gallery haar in Europa vertegenwoordigen.

2 Direct als in de betekenis dat Lee sinds de jaren 1990 zo genadeloos onverhuld als maar kan de oppervlakten van haar onderwerpen letterlijk in beeld brengt; er is geen rimpeltje dat ze niet vastlegt, geen fijn laagje sneeuw op een blad van een appelboom dat haar ontgaat. Lee behandelt echter ook de materialistische wereld zoals vergulde lijstjes, kleurrijke wandbekleding en andere meubels. Tezamen met de beelden van de buitenwereld, haar landschappen, ontstaat een werkelijke achtergrond waartegen het leven van haar familie en vrienden zich ontvouwt. Voor Lee bezit deze materiële realiteit van de oppervlakte een mystieke, meer innerlijke betekenis, iets wat in haar ogen alleen de fotografie tot uiting kan brengen, juist omdat fotografie dat wat visueel echt lijkt, dat natuurlijke, de directe realiteit zo bloot weet te leggen. Direct dus, maar door Lee s methoden van fotografie, en haar zuivere motieven, waardig. In de solo show is tevens Lee s serie Last Light ( ) te zien. De werken hierin gaan over de strijd van haar moeder in haar laatste dagen tegen longkanker. Om de onvermijdelijkheid van het verstrijken van de tijd te vertragen, maakte Lee beeldopnamen in de tuin van haar moeder op verschillende tijdstippen met behulp van diverse camera's. Tegelijk maakte ze intieme portretten van haar familie die zich voorbereidde op het verlies van een naaste; ze fotografeerde ook haar moeder in haar laatste weken. Met de expressieve beelden van de bloesem die ondanks het lijden van haar moeder in volle bloei stond, is Last Light een eerbetoon aan de liefde en aan de schoonheid van de fysieke wereld, maar natuurlijk ook aan de vergankelijkheid van beide. Bijzonder is hoe Lee iedereen zichzelf weet te laten zijn; het is alsof je onzichtbaar naar de geportretteerden kan kijken en mag opmerken hoe warm het licht is op de huid van een vrouw die op haar bed zit, voor ze de dag nog moet beginnen. Zoals de Amerikaanse dichter Sharon Olds het mooi verwoord: "[Lee] gives us ourselves, in the eyes of others looking out at us." Jocelyn Lee (1962, Napels, Italië) ontving een BA aan de Yale University in 1986 en een MFA in fotografie aan de City University van New York aan het Hunter College in Begin in jaren 1990 zocht Lee op hoe tienermoeders en vaders zich in Texas en Maine staande hielden; ze besloot gedurende zes jaar bij hen in te trekken wat resulteerde in haar fotografische essay The Youngest Parents: Teenage Pregnancy as it Shapes Lives (1997), waarmee ze zich plaatste in de documentaire traditie van Walker Evans, Robert Frank en Diane Arbus. In 2001 ontving zij het Guggenheim Fellowship. Naast haar werk als fotografe doceert ze aan Princeton University. Jocelyn Lee will be visiting the gallery to open her solo show on March 10th, her first with the gallery and her first solo show in Europe. Lee, a critically acclaimed artist received in 2001 the Guggenheim fellowship for photography. Lee's beguiling portraits secure not so much an individual likeness but an emblematic presence. Manoeuvring back and forth between levels of intimacy and unease, Lee purposely looks for spaces that are not to distracting, to encourage the viewer to focus on the individual and psychological exchange of the portrait for pertinent clues. When she makes the picture, Lee prefers to wait for the moment when her subjects 'breath their own life into the room' and are no longer aware of the camera. Yet for all their transparency and brilliant details, her subjects, their stories, remain unknown, deftly eclipsing the cameras attempts to capture them. In addition to portraiture Lee trains her camera in landscape and interior photography. Consistent in her work is a focus on the visual and tactile qualities of the material world, emphasizing the chromatic and textural richness of flesh, fabrics,

Her fascination with the physical and psychological transitions of people has produced incisive portraits that capture the fraught passage from adolescence to adulthood, as well as the changes that aging registers on the face and body. Borrowing from the formal conventions of painting, se lends a certain temporal permanence to her subjects while maintaining the potency of the open ended photographic narrative.
