In hun verbeelding analyser kanaliser zij de geschiedis van deze stedelijke breuklijn de onderliggde sociale, architecturale emotionele kracht. De Noord-Zuidverbinding is in de eerste plaats, zowel naar oorsprong als naar de toekomst, e conflictueuze ruimte : ms gebouw moest voor de aaeg verdwijn over de toekomst bestaan tegstrijdige drom ming. Haar inplanting trok zestig jaar geled nieuwe grz, scheidde marginaliseerde stadsdel, maar maakt ook weer nieuwe ervaring toeëiging mogelijk. In die zin prester we de treinverbinding als e grote liminale ruimte, e overgangszone waar drempels tussruimtes de reizigers, bezoekers bewoners naar andere functies dimsies leid. Om deze passage te begeleid, verschijnt de kunstaar zelf als grsfiguur. Hij brgt die drempels, grz zones in kaart formuleert nieuwe voorstell voor de productie van wat de Franse filosoof Jacques Rancière noemde : gevoelige gedacht. our l exposition assages, le commissaire Michel Dewilde a sélectionné huit plasticis qui déploit leurs œuvres le long de la Jonction Nord-Midi, plein air, et à l intérieur des cinq gares qui jalonnt ce tracé. Les artistes ont plongés dans leur imaginaire pour y analyser et y revisiter l histoire de cette faille urbaine et les forces sociales, architecturales et émotionnelles qui lui sont liées. La Jonction Nord-Midi est avant tout un espace conflictuel, tant par ses origines qu à cause de son avir : son aménagemt a contraint personnes et bâtimts à disparaître et son avir est source de rêves et d opinions antithétiques. Son implantation a imposé de nouvelles ontières, divisé et marginalisé certains quartiers, mais permet aussi des expérices et des appropriations nouvelles. En ce ss, nous préstons la jonction ferroviaire comme un vaste espace liminal, une zone de transition où seuils et intervalles guidt les voyageurs, les visiteurs et les habitants vers d autres fonctions et dimsions. our nous accompagner dans ce passage, l artiste devit lui-même un personage ontalier. Il cartographie ces seuils, ontières et zones et formule de nouvelles propositions pour la production de ce que Jacques Rancière, philosophe ançais, qualifiait de psées ssibles. The external curator Michel Dewilde selected for the exhibition assages, eight visual artists, who prest their work either in the public space, or inside the five stations along the North-South train connection. In their imagination they analyse and channel the history of this urban fault line and the underlying social, architectural and emotional forces. The North-South connection is in the first place, since its creation as well as for the future, a space of conflict. eople and buildings had to be removed for the construction of it, while conflicting dreams and opinions about its future td to persist. Its implantation sixty years ago drew new boundaries, thereby separating and marginalizing urban areas, but it also ables new experices and dless possibilities. In this sse, we prest the railway line as a large liminal space, an in-betwe zone where barriers and interstitial spaces lead travellers, visitors and residts to other functions and dimsions. To accompany this passage, the artist himself appears as a border figure. He maps those thresholds, limits and zones in order to formulate new proposals for the production of what the Frch philosopher Jacques Rancière called ssitive thoughts.

Deze voorbereidde werk, vaak kunstwerk op zich, lat zo de bezoeker toe zich e totaalbeeld te vorm van deze ttoonstelling, voor of na de ontdekking van de werk ter plaatse, als start- of eindpunt. De ttoonstelling in het station is op van dinsdag tot zaterdag, van 12 tot 18u. Dans la gare de Bruxelles-Congrès seront préstés des maquettes, croquis, avant-projets, textes et photomontages réalisés par les huit artistes de cette exposition. Ces travaux préparatoires - souvt des œuvres à part tière - rassemblés dans les très beaux espaces de la gare de Bruxelles-Congrès (architecte : Maxime Brunfaut, 1958) ofiront aux visiteurs une vision d semble de l exposition, avant (ou après) découverte des œuvres in situ. 4 Neda Razavipour ( 1969) was born in Tehran, Iran where she lives and works. From 1985 tot 1999 she studied Fine rts and Space and Stage design in aris and worked as a stage designer for theater. She wt back to Iran in 1999 and co-founded the Leeve Theatre roup witch is an experimtalresearch based theatre group. In 2004, she co-founded the Movazi ublic erformance and Installation roup and later, in 2007, she initiated and managed the Jalleh Collective rt Studio and Residcy. NED RZVIOUR SILK ROD Wagon van trein L2267, afkomstig van Zottegem / Dans un wagon du train L2267, provance de Zottegem / In a wagon of train L2267, coming om Zottegem Working across video, installation, urban performance, photography, drawing and painting, she s maiy focused on social issues with a touch of personal experices and a hint of irony. She s usually inspired by daily life situations and news topics, developing a playful attitude towards les idées reçues. Razavipour has become famous and well known, both nationally and internationally, for her interactive works, which are couraging the audice to interact/ react in order to extd and complete the work s meaning and its concept. Het idee van de passage roept bij Neda Razavipour het thema van de reis op, in ruimte tijd. Door de ram van de treinwagon ziet de passagier/reiziger vertrouwde landschapp, omringd versierd door motiev die geïnspireerd zijn op de myth, tapijtwerk vaz van de Zijderoute. Sierlijke motiev van Japan China, over Turkmistan, fghanistan, Iran, Irak Turkije, tot in riekland Vlaander. De tijd van de Zijderoute is misschi voorbij, maar de smaak van het reiz, de ontdekking de uitwisseling heeft de heddaagse ms nog altijd bewaard. In deze Silk Road -wagon schuift het verled over het hed. De overgang van e bekde naar e nog onbekde plek wordt e sprong in de tijd, e ingebeelde reis. De trein wordt zo e plek van herinnering. Le thème du passage évoque pour Neda Razavipour le thème du voyage. Le voyage dans l espace et le temps. travers les vitres du wagon, le passager/voyageur, verra les paysages habituels, tourés et décorés par des motifs inspirés des mythologies, des tapisseries et des vases de la Route de la Soie. Des motifs ornemtaux du Japon, de la Chine, passant par le Turkménistan, l fghanistan, l Iran, l Irak, la Turquie, jusqu rèce, et Flandre. Le temps de la Route de la Soie est peut-être révolu, mais le goût du voyage, de la découverte et des échanges demeure ancré dans l homme contemporain... foui dans sa mémoire lointaine Dans ce wagon Silk Road, passé et prést se superpost. Le passage tre le lieu connu vers le lieu attdu, devidra pour un laps de temps un voyage imaginaire. Le train, lieu de réminiscce. Through the windows of the train wagon the passger/traveller sees familiar landscapes surrounded and decorated with patterns inspired by myths, tapestries and vases of the Silk Road. Ornate motifs of Japan, China, Turkmistan, fghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, reece and Flanders. The time of the Silk Road may have passed, but the taste for travel, discoveries and exchanges, is still esh in the memory of the contemporary man. In this Silk road wagon the past slides right over the prest making a transition om known to unknown places, a jump through time and a journey into the imagination. The train becomes a place of remembrance. EMILIO LOEZ- MENCHERO LE RIL Hoofdgang Zuidstation / Couloir principal de la are du Midi / Main hall Brussels-South railway station In deze op videofilm vastgelegde performance trekt e stoet of processie van het Zuid- naar het Noordstation. E groep mann, interimarbeiders, trekt met singels touw e lange spoorstaaf op wieltjes door de stad. Zoals e aak in vroeger tijd door ms werd getrokk vanaf het jaagpad. s Ochtds verzamelt de ploeg zich aan het Zuidstation, aan de kant van de siotor om de rail voort te trekk richting Noordstation, door het stadsctrum, langs de Noord-Zuidtreinverbinding. Dit uitzonderlijke transport wordt geëscorteerd als betrof het e kostbare lading, op weg naar zijn eindbestemming: het voorplein aan het Noordstation. Daar wordt de spoorstaaf tijdelijk ttoongesteld als sculptuur, als e soort van horizontaal monumt. Le rail, posé sur des roulettes, sera tracté comme l était les péniches dans le temps, depuis les chemins de halage sur les berges. L équipe se réunira le matin à la gare du Midi, côté Tour des sions, et commcera alors à tirer le rail, direction de la gare du Nord, traversant le ctre-ville, réalisant littéralemt et physiquemt la jonction Nord-Midi... Ce convoi exceptionnel, escorté comme s il s agissait d un chargemt précieux (c les diligces dans le far-west noir et blanc), rejoindra, dans l effort, et rythme, le parvis de la gare du Nord, où le rail sera exposé pdant toute la durée de l exposition, telle une sculpture, un monumt horizontal. There the rail will be temporarily exhibited as a sculpture, a kind of horizontal monumt. Emilio Lopez-Mchero ( 1960) was born of Spanish parts in Mol and lives in Brussels. He studied visual arts and architecture at La Cambre and soon developed a unique, multidisciplinary practice in which urban intervtions, architecture, actions in public space, photography, drawing, painting, and sound and video art come together. Since th he is noted for provocative art installations and ke actions. In 2000 he was invited by Jan Hoet for the ht exhibition Over the Edges for which he proposed an amplified Tarzan Cry to resonate across the cter of the city. In Brussels, since 2006 nobody can go around the work asionaria: a giant steel public speaking horn built in the vue de Stalingrad, directed towards the South Station. Hij vertrekt van e basale maar complexe ervaring van de werkelijkheid die gevormd wordt door quasi ongrijpbare strom van materie ergie. De kunstaar vangt deze esstie in wervelde sculptur installaties waarin hij het verband tuss voorstelling abstractie verdoezelt. Hierbij ontwijkt hij bewust de mogelijkheid om er e duidelijke gestalte uit te pur. De uiteindelijke vorm oscilleert in e eindeloze reeks van visueel teggestelde beweging binn e in wez gestolde vorm, waarbij hij elke vorm van represtatie, van symboliek, weert, ja zelfs tietdoet. Zijn sculptur bestaan uit afval, gevond material, stof, haar zelfs bloed. Hij verwerkt het abjecte : dat wat noch object, noch subject is. Voor deze ttoonstelling koos Bugghout e bestaand werk dat het dichtst aansluit bij de eindeloze stroming die zowel de architectuur van de Noord-Zuidverbinding als de ongeregelde beweging van haar gebruikers ritmeert. Zijn werk houdt zich op tuss twee dimsies : het belichaamt de interne externe flux vat het onder één sculpturale huid sam. eter Bugghout est fasciné par l imprévisible, le chaotique ; dans le fond, l évolution permante de la réalité. Il s inspire d une expérice basique mais complexe constituée de courants quasi insaisissables de matière et d énergie. L artiste capte cette essce dans des sculptures et des installations tourbillonnantes dans lesquelles il estompe le li tre représtation et abstraction. Ce faisant, il évite sciemmt la possibilité d y puiser une posture évidte. La forme finale oscille dans une série infinie de mouvemts visuellemt opposés à l intérieur d une forme solidifiée, écartant, voire annulant, toute forme de représtation, de symbolisme. Ses sculptures sont constituées de déchets, de matériaux trouvés, de tissus, de cheveux et de sang aussi. Il travaille l abject : ce qui n est ni objet, ni sujet. our cette exposition, Bugghout a choisi une œuvre existante la plus proche du flot intarissable qui rythme l architecture de la jonction Nord-Midi et les flux déréglés de ses utilisateurs. Son œuvre est susps tre deux dimsions : elle incarne le flux interne et capte le flux externe sous une seule et unique peau sculpturale. eter Bugghout is fascinated by the unpredictable, by chaos ; esstially the continuing evolution of reality. He starts with a basic but complex experice of reality formed by quasi-intangible flows of matter and ergy. The artist captures this essce in swirling sculptures and installations, in which the link betwe represtation and abstraction is blurred. Here he deliberately avoids the possibility of filtering out a clear shape. The final form oscillates in an dless series of visual opposing movemts within a solidified form, in which any form of represtation or symbolism, is rejected or ev nullified. His sculptures consist of waste, found materials, dust, hair, and ev blood. He incorporates the abject : that which is neither object nor subject. For this exhibition Bugghout chose an existing work that corresponds best to the dless flow which determines both the architecture of the North- South Railway line, as well as the uncontrolled movemts of its users. His work considers these two dimsions : it embodies the internal and external flux under one sculptural skin. s THOMS CTTRYE THE LOO Walplein, voor station Brussel- Kapellekerk / lace des Wallons, devant la gare Bruxelles-Chapelle / lace des Wallons, in ont of Brussels-Chapel railway station (Recyclart) De Noord-Zuidverbinding is zonder twijfel de belangrijkste schakel in het Belgische spoornetwerk. Ze belooft e verbinding te zijn tuss ons lokaal bestaan de globale wereld. Het sluit van deze cirkel maakt de wereld van het spoor vreemd goeg ook tot e heel geslot, exclusieve wereld. edefinieerd door twee stal spor e eindeloze herhaling van hout balk gaat hij maar door door door... Thomas Cattrysse studied architecture at the University of ht. He worked as an architect for Stéphane Beel and as an urban researcher at rchitecture Workroom. Since a year and a half he s also busy with the project Linear City, passage areas along the E19 with Simon De Waepaere, in collaboration with Laboratory S. Over the years he developed a growing interest in the visual arts and the interfaces with architecture. For assages he prests for the first time visual work of his own hand. 7 Luc Deleu ( 1944) is a Belgian architect and urban planner residing in ntwerp. In 1969 he completed his architectural degree, creating T.O.. office in 1970 to question the role of architecture and urbanism in the modern age. Over the past four decades, Luc Deleu and T.O.. office have produced a rich and multifaceted body of work, consisting of architectural projects and urban schemes, as well as visionary proposals, specific objects and e LUC DELEU THE CONTINER Rond punt achecolaan / Rondpoint boulevard achéco et rue de la Banque / Roundabout boulevard achéco and rue de la Banque installations, and critical writings. rincipally driv by the planetary dimsion of human activity, the practice of eco-ctric urbanism or Orbanism, addresses the main questions cononting architecture and urban planning in the second half of the 20th and at the start of the 21st ctury, while tering into a critical dialogue with former utopian formulations. The Container is het meest recte, nog niet gerealiseerde project voor e containerinstallatie van Luc Deleu & T.O.. Office. Het werd voor het eerst voorgesteld in 2009 daarna werd het beeld geprojecteerd op het Saint Lambert-plein in Luik in 2011, maar het voorstel werd, wegs omstandighed, door T.O.. Office afgevoerd. De sculptuur past volledig binn de geest van het œuvre van Luc Deleu vult de bestaande reeks containerinstallaties binn buit Europa aan. Luc Deleu & T.O.. office is er nu immers in geslaagd om e beeld te creër met slechts één container (Less is Less), gewoon door hem in e ongewone positie te plaats. eplaatst op het rond punt, vlak bov de ondergrondse Noord- Zuidverbinding, krijgt het werk e bijzondere betekis. La sculpture s intègre parfaitemt dans l esprit de l œuvre de Luc Deleu et vit compléter la série existante d installations de containers Europe et au-delà. Luc Deleu & T.O.. office ont réussi, avec ce projet, à créer une image avec un seul et unique container (Less is Less), le plaçant simplemt dans une position singulière. The Container prd ici, sur ce rond-point situé pile au dessus des trains de la Jonction, un ss tout particulier. The installation on the roundabout above the subterranean North-South train connection adds to the significance of the work. Thierry Verbeeck ( 1981) studied graphic design at Saint-Luc in Brussels. In 2002 he wins the price of The International oster Competition in Chaumont, France. Th he worked for L telier de Création raphique in aris before focusing on new media. s Since 2008 his artistic work is more based on the interaction with the spectator. He has exhibited in public places such as stations and libraries, but also in the Bozar, the Ctre de la ravure in La Louviere, etc. THIERRY VERBEECK ENERS Brussel-Congres, ingang Blekerijstraat / are Bruxelles- Congrès, trée rue de la Blanchisserie / Brussels-Congres railway station, try rue de la Blanchisserie Hoe de Noord-Zuidtreinverbinding wordt ervar, zal aan de ingang van het station Brussel-Congres word opgeroep met dit werk van Thierry Verbeeck. Spookbeeld van beroemde anonieme protagonist uit de geschiedis van dit stukje spoorweg word door elkaar gemgd gezeefdrukt op grote spiegels. Dit voortreffelijke lijk ( cadavre exquis ), naar aloude surrealistische traditie, is het resultaat van de pletwals van de grote kleine geschiediss is helemaal niet dood. Elke toeschouwer-bezoeker zal namelijk zichzelf weerspiegeld zi in dit levde schilderij met deze getuig het geheug van de plek belicham. De geschiedis gaat verder wij kom gaan (eraan voorbij). This exquisite corpse, following the time honoured surrealist tradition, is the result of the steamroller of the small and big histories and is not dead at all. Each spectator/visitor will see himself reflected in this living image, embodying with all the other witnesses, the memory of the place. History goes as and we pass and walk by.

8 Elise Eeraerts was born in 1986 in Mechel. Now she lives and works in ntwerp. Reflected directions (labyrinth) is e bruikbaar vloerlabyrint dat zich in de ctrale hal van het Noordstation bevindt. Het labyrint heeft de vorm van e kompasnaald waarvan de punt precies wijst naar e grote windroos op de muur van diezelfde hal. De windroos staat symbool voor oriëntatie. Het labyrint daarteg vraagt e complexe doorloop. Daarmee legt Eeraerts de spanning bloot tuss erzijds de intties verwachting van de reizigers anderzijds het ingewikkelde kluw van de spoorweginastructuur stationsarchitectuur, kortom tuss twee verschillde oriëntatielogica s. De vorm van het labyrint is gebaseerd op e rooster met twee richting: die van de feitelijke Noord-Zuidverbinding, van het Noord- naar het Zuidstation die van de Noordelijke- Zuidelijke windrichting. De richting van de windstrek is weergegev als e ononderbrok strook, terwijl de richting tuss het Noord- Zuidstation bepaald wordt door het beginpunt eindpunt van het labyrint. Door de richting in het werk te integrer de ctrale stationshal hierop symmetrisch te axer, stelt het labyrint de toeschouwer in staat zich te oriënter in e grootschalige context. Reflected directions (labyrinth) est un labyrinthe au sol, que l on peut arpter, dans le hall ctral de la gare du Nord. Ce labyrinthe a la forme de l aiguille d une boussole, dont la pointe indique exactemt une grande rose des vts sur le mur de ce hall. La rose des vts est le symbole de l oritation. Le labyrinthe, au contraire, est complexe. Eeraerts dévoile ainsi la tsion tre d une part les inttions et les atttes des voyageurs et d autre part l chevêtremt compliqué de l inastructure ferroviaire et de l architecture de la gare, bref tre deux logiques d oritation différtes. La forme du labyrinthe est basée sur une grille à deux directions : celle de la jonction Nord-Midi concrète, qui relie la gare du Nord et la gare du Midi et celle des points cardinaux Nord et Sud. La direction des points cardinaux est restituée sous forme de bande ininterrompue, tandis que la direction tre la gare du Nord et la gare du Midi est déterminée par l trée et la sortie du labyrinthe. En intégrant les directions dans l œuvre, et axant symétriquemt le hall ctral de la gare, le labyrinthe permet au spectateur de s oriter dans un contexte plus vaste. Reflected directions (labyrinth) is a walkable labyrinth floor in the main lobby of the North Station. The labyrinth has the shape of a compass needle tip which exactly points to a large compass rose on the wall of the same hall symbolising oritation. The labyrinth in contrast, requires a complex path. This reflects the tsion betwe the inttions and expectations of travellers on the one hand, and the complicated tangle of railway station architecture and railway inastructure on the other. Basically, two differt oritation logics. The shape of the labyrinth is based on a grid with two directions: that of the actual North-South connection, om station to station, and that of the north and south wind directions. The direction of the winds is shown as a continuous line, while the direction betwe the stations is determined by the beginning and d of the maze. By integrating the directions into the work an locating symmetrically the main station hall on it, the visitor is able to orit himself in a larger context. JONCTION Sinds september 2011 organiser vzw Recyclart vzw CONR, gesteund door bma (Bouwmeester voor het Brusselse ewest) TO (het gtschap voor Territoriale Ontwikkeling), het project JONCTION : twee culturele seizo rond het thema van de Noord-Zuidtreinverbinding. Dit 2,8 km lange, deels ondergrondse treintraject loopt dwars door het ctrum van Brussel vierde in 2012 zijn zestigste verjaardag. Omwille van het probleem van de verzadigde vervoerscapaciteit is er sinds ige tijd sprake van e uitbreiding of verbreding in de nabije toekomst. De vraag naar haar gegrondheid, doeltreffdheid, impact toekomstige uitdaging is daarom zeer actueel verdit al onze aandacht. Het initiatief JONCTION stelt zich tot doel de Brusselaars, hun politieke verantwoordelijk, de NMBS, de toerist de pdelaars bewust te mak omtrt de talrijke uitdaging, verbond met het hed de toekomst van de Noord-Zuidtreinverbinding. Hiertoe werd e specifiek, veelzijdig cultureel programma ontwikkeld in samwerking met talrijke culturele academische partners uit het Brusselse ewest daarbuit. Op het programma staan twee jaar lang, vele lezing, debatt, wandeling ttoonstelling. Les asbl Recyclart et CONR, ctres d art qui animt les haltes de la Jonction Nord-Midi, (respectivemt la gare de Bruxelles-Chapelle et la gare de Bruxelles-Congrès), épaulés par le bma (bouwmeester maîtrearchitecte) et l DT-TO organist depuis septembre 2011 le projet JONCTION : deux saisons culturelles autour du thème de la Jonction. Ce tracé ferré à moitié souterrain qui traverse le ctre-ville de Bruxelles a fêté ses soixante ans 2012, et qui plus est, il est question de l agrandir/élargir dans un futur proche. La question de sa pertince, de son efficacité, de son empreinte et de son jeu futur est d actualité et mérite toute notre atttion. Soucieux de ssibiliser les Bruxellois, leurs responsables politiques, la SNCB, les touristes, les navetteurs, aux multiples jeux liés au prést et à l avir de la Jonction, l initiative JONCTION développe une programmation variée et pointue, partariat avec de nombreux acteurs culturels et académiques de la Région et d ailleurs. Dans ce cadre, de nombreux débats, conférces, discussions et promades autour de l avir de cette Jonction Nord-Midi sont organisés tout au long des deux années. Since September 2011 the arts cter Recyclart and vzw CONR, supported by bma (Head of rchitecture for Brussels Region) and TO (the agcy for territory developmt) are organizing the project JONCTION : two cultural seasons around the North-South train connection. This 2.8 km long, partly subterranean, railway line runs straight through the cter of Brussels and celebrated in 2012 its 60th birthday. Due to the problem of saturated transport capacity questions arose about its extsion in the near future. The question of its validity, effectivess, scope and future challges is therefore very relevant and deserves all of our atttion. The project JONCTION aims at raising public awaress about the many challges associated with the prest and the future of the North-South train connection. Therefore, a specific, varied cultural program has be developed in collaboration with numerous cultural and academic partners om the region and beyond. For two years, many lectures, debates, walking tours and exhibitions will be on the program.
