10 Dit proefschrift heeft niet tot stand kunnen komen zonder de hulp en bijdrage van een aantal mensen, in het bijzonder mijn beide promotors professor M.C. de Ruiter en professor C.J.H. van de Velde. Beste professor de Ruiter, beste Marco, je hebt mij geleerd om een goede, kritische wetenschappelijke vraag te stellen en die te beantwoorden. Ik wil je bedanken voor jouw vertrouwen, de kansen die je mij hebt gegeven, je nimmer aflatende steun en de manier waarop je jouw interesse in de anatomie hebt overgedragen aan mij. Beste professor van de Velde, beste professor, bedankt voor de kans die u mij gaf om met zeer weinig wetenschappelijke ervaring aan dit onderzoek te beginnen. Ik heb heel veel geleerd van uw inzicht in de wetenschappelijke en klinische vooruitgang van de chirurgie, en de kritische blik daarop, wat essentieel is geweest bij het tot stand komen van dit proefschrift. Beste dr. Vilanova Bartoli, beste Anna, de vele medisch-technische discussies hebben ervoor gezorgd dat we uiteindelijk hetgeen hebben bereikt wat we wilden: een virtueel 3D patiëntspecifiek bekkenmodel. Beste dr. Botha, beste Charl, zonder jouw enthousiasme en innovatieve ideeën kon het project niet van start gaan. Ondanks de vrij korte samenwerking was het toch een hele waardevolle. Beste professor Rutten, beste Harm, u bent nauw betrokken geweest bij het tot stand komen van dit proefschrift. De fascinatie die u als chirurg heeft voor de anatomie werkt aanstekelijk. 12 Vrienden en vriendinnen, jullie vriendschap is van onnoembare waarde voor mij. Ik lever liever in op het aantal uren slaap, dan dat ik ook maar een greintje van de gelukkige momenten met jullie mis. Familie in Nederland en Italië, dank voor jullie steun. Een speciaal woord van dank gaat uit naar Kapitein Rob, aan wie ik mijn eerste kennismaking met de thorax, het abdomen en een toxisch megacolon te danken heb. Lieve Joost, jij wordt misselijk bij het horen van het woord maag-darm kanaal terwijl ik dan juist op het puntje van mijn stoel ga zitten. Behalve dit, zijn wij vier handen op één buik. Ik vind het super leuk dat jij mijn paranimf bent. Lieve mama en papa, jullie zijn trots op mij, maar ik ben heel erg trots dat jullie mijn ouders zijn. 16 Anne Charlotte Kraima was born at 2 March 1985 in Zwolle, the Netherlands. At the age of 5, she moved with her parents to Alphen aan den Rijn, where she grew up and attended high school. In 2004, she was accepted into the University of Amsterdam to study medicine. As being part of her study, she did a 6-month scientific internship at the Sant Orsola-Malpighi Hospital in Bologna, Italy and a 3-month clinical internship in surgery at the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. In april 2011, she obtained her medical degree (artsexamen cum laude). Shortly after, she started this Ph.D. project under the supervision of Professor M.C. DeRuiter (Clinical Anatomy) and Professor C.J.H. van de Velde (Oncological Surgery) at the Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden. The project involved a close collaboration with the Computer & Visualisation group at the department of Intelligent Systems, Delft University of Technology (supervisor: dr. A. Vilanova Bartoli). From March to August 2014, she worked as a research fellow at the Leeds Institute of Cancer and Pathology, University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Under the supervision of Professor P. Quirke (Pathology) she studied the histological anatomy of the rectum in human adult cadaveric pelvic exenteration specimens. In May 2015, she finished her Ph.D. project and started working as a surgical resident (ANIOS chirurgie) at the Flevo Hospital in Almere (opleider: dr. P.C.M. Verbeek). 20 Curriculum Vitae 301
