DANKWOORD & BIOGRAFIE 213 BIOGRAFIE Lucy Crane werd op 5 oktober 1983 geboren in Groningen. De middelbare school doorliep zij aan Het Baarnsch Lyceum te Baarn, waar zij in 2001 slaagde voor het eindexamen gymnasium. Na een interim jaar waarin zij onder meer een half jaar studeerde aan een Amerikaans college, startte zij in 2002 met de studie geneeskunde aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In de jaren die volgden was zij actief binnen de Medische Faculteitsvereniging Panacea, de universiteit, het UMCG en Rotaract Groningen, als lid van diverse commissies en besturen. Wetenschappelijke interesse ontstond in het tweede studiejaar, toen Lucy assisteerde bij een onderzoeksproject op de afdeling ontwikkelingsneurologie. In 2005 stapte zij over naar de afdeling chirurgie, waar zij onder leiding van prof. dr. T. Wiggers en dr. G.M. van Dam startte met een project naar hypoxie in slokdarmkanker. Dit onderzoek diende als basis voor een MD/PhD-traject, dat in 2006 werd gehonoreerd. De twee volgende jaren werden gecombineerd met co-schappen, waarna Lucy in augustus 2008 afstudeerde als arts. Sinds het begin van 2009 is het onderzoek gericht op fluorescentiebeeldvorming, mede op haar initiatief in nauwe samenwerking met de afdeling gynaecologische oncologie. Het voorliggende proefschrift is het resultaat van de eerste beschreven klinische studies op het gebied van intra-operatieve fluorescentiebeeldvorming. BIOGRAPHY Lucy Crane was born in Groningen, the Netherlands, on October 5, 1983. In 2001, she graduated from high school at the Baarnsch Lyceum in Baarn, the Netherlands. After a gap year, in which she attended a US college for the fall semester, she enrolled in medical school at the State University of Groningen in 2002. In the following years, Lucy participated in many extracurricular activities such as student boards and committees. In the second year of study, she took part in a research project in the Department of Developmental Neurology. In 2005, she switched to the Department of Surgery, where she started a project on hypoxia in esophageal cancer, supervised by Prof. Dr. T. Wiggers and Dr. G.M. van Dam. This research project served as the basis for an MD/PhD-track which was granted in 2006. After two years of internships, Lucy graduated from medical school in 2008. On her initiative, her research project was then changed to intraoperative fluorescence imaging, in close collaboration with the Department of Gynecologic Oncology. This thesis is the result of the first reported clinical studies in the field of intraoperative fluorescence imaging.
