Kenya - Ahero Period : 1 25 August 2016 Volunteers: min. 2 - max. 20 INT. volunteers Age: 18+ Project: Ahero Resource Center In Kenya we are partnering with a community development agency registered in 1997, operating especially in the marginalized and poverty-stricken rural areas of Kenya with an objective of contributing towards the socio-economic empowerment of disadvantaged communities and to foster harmonious relations among people of different backgrounds with innovative and customized high quality services. We achieve these aims through two program areas: Community Development and International Voluntary Service. The Center serves as a One-Stop-Shop offering a variety of services to the local community. - Training facility - Orphan Feeding Program - Rainwater harvesting infrastructure & borehole - Community Bank Food security
Activities of the IBO volunteers - Supporting the improvement of the community farm, e.g. planting, weeding, harvesting - Supporting the Orphan Feeding Program, e.g. preparing lunch for the orphans - Environmental conservation, e.g. planting of the trees & landscaping - Renovation of the Resource Center Accommodation There will be 3 rooms that can accommodate up to 20 volunteers available for accommodation and therefore volunteers are advised to have a sleeping bag. The allocation of the rooms based on gender will depend on the gender mix of the volunteers. There is no need for sleeping mat as mattresses are available. There are 2 latrines and 2 bathrooms to be used by the volunteers. Electricity is available at the project. Clean safe drinking water is available at Ahero Resource Centre. Lodging and board Food will be prepared by the volunteers themselves, assisted by local volunteers in shifts depending on the number of volunteers. All the three meals will be provided. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be Kenyan food with a lot of rice, ugali, chapatti, beans and vegetables. Meat and/or eggs are also available for those who want to eat them. Typical Day and conditions Volunteers will work upto 8 hours a day from Monday to Friday. In the evening volunteers will engage in campfire activities, games or have time for themselves. Participants should not be afraid to get their hands dirty and do physically demanding work. Generally, volunteers are required to be flexible, open minded, ready to adapt to local living conditions and should have strong commitment to values and principles of volunteerism.
Location Veiligheid Het project ligt in de buurt van Kisumu, een relatief veilig deel van Kenia. De projectorganisatie haalt de vrijwilligers op van het vliegveld Jomo Kenyatta (Nairobi) en zij worden gedurende de projectperiode geheel begeleid. In Kenya is (net als in Nederland) een substantieel dreigingsniveau voor terroristische aanslagen. De voornaamste dreiging komt van Al Shabaab, een Somalische terroristische organisatie die actief is in m.n. de noordoostelijke provincies van Kenia: Mandera, Wajir, Garissa en Lamu. Het wordt zeer sterk afgeraden om naar dit deel van Kenia te reizen. Travelling date from Nairobi to Ahero 3 rd August 2016 Travelling date back to Nairobi 24 th August 2016 Date of departure 25 th August 2016 Travel Flight to Nairobi, There the volunteers will be picked up from the airport. They will be accommodated in Nairobi for a maximum of 3 nights, will receive an orientation and city tour, and will continue their journey to the project once all volunteers have arrived. For this project you need to: - Book your own ticket(s) to the project - Apply for a visa. - Take out an insurance that covers volunteer work abroad - Check with your local health clinic for necessary vaccinations - Check if your passport is still valid (3-6 months upon arrival, depending on the country) - Make sure you have a Certificate of Good Conduct.
