Meetinstrumenten. De gebruikte meetinstrumenten waren de Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Cohen, Kamerck, & Mermelstein, (1983); De Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), Watson, Clark en Tellegen (1988) en Opvoedstijl Vragenlijst, Lamborn, Mounts, Steinberg, Dornbush, (1991). Resultaten. 5
The relationship between stress, negative affect and parenting style. Jenny Thielman Summary Background. Parenting style has a large influence on the well being of a child. Baumrind (1966) who did a lot of research on parenting style distinct 4 models of child rearing practices based on the measure of strictness and involvement. According to her are authoritative parents strict and involved. Parents with an authoritarian parenting style are strict but not involved whereas parents with an permissive parenting style are involved but not strict. Finally are parents with a neglectful parenting style neither strict nor involved. There are several determinants that leads to a certain parenting style but one of the basic determinants are stressful events. Several studies showed that increase of stress was associated with increase of negative affect. With regard to the relationship between stress, negative affect and parenting style results shows some ambiguity. Aim. The aim of this investigation is to give an answer to the question whether there is a relationship between stressful events and parenting style and the interacting role of negative affect. Participants, procedure and research design. The respondents were approached through a databank of a marketing bureau and some schools with a invitation letter. A total number of 139 parents or guardians of kids between 6 and 15 filled in a questionnaire in which stress perception, negative affect and parenting style were self-reported. 6
Measure. The instruments used were the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Cohen, Kamerck, & Mermelstein, (1983); The Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), Watson, Clark en Tellegen (1988) and parenting style questionnaire, Lamborn et al., (1991). Results: The results show no relationship between stress, negative affect and authoritarian parenting style. Interaction influences of stress and negative affect do not affect parenting style. Conform former results a significant positive relationship between stress and negative affect has been found. Conclusion: The hypothesis that parents / guardians who score high on stress or negative affect also score higher on authoritarian parenting style could not be confirmed in this study. The hypothesis that the multiplicative value of stress and negative affect shows a relation with parenting style have also been falsified by facts. The only theorem that has not been rejected is that increase of stress is associated with increase of negative affect. 7
