11 Stelling 10 een goed begin heeft een goed behagen maar het eindje zal de last dragen is zeker van toepassing op de totstandkoming van dit proefschrift. In de loop der jaren heb ik veel steun gehad en velen hebben een onmisbare bijdrage geleverd. Hiervoor ben ik hen zeer dankbaar, sommigen wil ik in het bijzonder noemen. Prof. dr. Boermeester, Marja, pieken en dalen op zowel professioneel als persoonlijk vlak, intensief contact en radiostilte, kleine details en grote lijnen: we hebben veel besproken en voorbij zien komen vanaf het moment dat ik bij je zat voor een sollicitatiegesprek tot nu dat het boekje voor ons ligt. Stoïcijns doorgaan met waar je mee bezig bent, dat is de belangrijkste les die ik van je geleerd heb. Ik bewonder jouw capaciteit om topprestaties te leveren ondanks je vele taken en alles wat je pad heeft gekruist. Dank dat je me bent blijven steunen en motiveren ondanks de kopzorgen die ik je ongetwijfeld wel eens bezorgd heb. Alle leden van mijn promotiecommissie, prof. dr. Bemelman, dr. Dijkgraaf, prof. dr. Bedankt voor je inspiratie, zonder dat had ik me niet zover ontwikkeld op dit gebied. Alle medeauteurs, lokale onderzoekers en medewerkers van de RELAP studie, de SUREPILL studie en de AAP studie, bedankt voor al jullie werk en samenwerking. Oddeke, bedankt voor je begeleiding bij mijn eerste stapjes in de wetenschap. Shandra, bedankt dat je bereid was om voor de zoveelste chirurgie onderzoeker een onmisbare bijdrage te leveren.
