In these cases, compulsory attendance may be required at -parts of- the lectures. The lecturer communicates the compulsory attendance of - parts of - the lecture before the start of the course via Blackboard / the Electronic Study Guide. * Examples of such forms of work are the use of voting boxes / digital voting systems, quizzes, giving presentations during the lecture, etcetera. 11

Section 3 The propaedeutic phase of the program Article 3.1 Composition of the propaedeutic phase The propaedeutic phase comprises the courses and the corresponding course loads as specified in PART 2. Component details are specified in the Study Guide. Each year it is decided which of the courses will be offered and tested in Dutch, in English or in another language. The students are to take the course in the language in which it is offered and tested in the year in question. In tandem with these courses, the School of Humanities offers, for all Bachelor s programs except Liberal Arts and Sciences, a digital Dutch and English proficiency test. This Dutch/English language service is for all students who have enrolled for the first time in a particular program. First-year students of the Bachelor s program and students of the Pre-Master s track of Communication and Information Sciences are obliged to participate in the Test Subject Pool. Students who started the Bachelor s program or a Pre-Master s track in the academic year or earlier are obliged to participate in the Test Subject Pool for a total of 15 hours. Students who started the Bachelor s program or a Pre-Master s track of 31 ECTS-credits in the academic year or later are obliged to participate in the Test Subject Pool for a total of 15 hours within the context of the course Methodology. In drawing up the schedules of the Communication and Information Science Bachelor s and Pre-Master s programs, care is taken to avoid scheduling at the same time courses with the same labels or courses that are linked in terms of content. However, considering the great number of courses offered in each teaching period (block or semester), the time slots of certain courses will inevitably overlap with others. In these cases, students will have to make a choice between these overlapping courses. 12

One of the components of the first-year and second-year curriculum of the Bachelor s programs is the Mentor/Tutor system. Participation in the Philosophy Bachelor s Mentor system is a requirement for all full-time first-year and second-year students. The Mentor system comprises four semesters; each semester one of the courses will focus on particular skills. Parttime students are strongly advised to take part in the Mentor system. The students are to take the course in the language in which it is offered and tested in the year in question. Within the Bachelor s programs of Culture Studies and Philosophy, three exit profiles are distinguished: Education, Research and the Entrepreneurial profile. [ 3 ] For the exit profile of Education, students can fill in the Bachelor s thesis requirement by doing Bachelor s thesis research or by doing a research internship. The topic should preferably be related to Education in the broadest sense of the word (e.g., learning, knowledge transfer, teaching and raising children). For the Research exit profile, students can fill in the Bachelor s thesis requirement by doing Bachelor s thesis research. For the Entrepreneurial exit profile, students can fill in the Bachelor s thesis requirement by doing a research internship. The Mentor/Tutor system is a component of the second-year curriculum of the Bachelor s program. Article 4.2 Post-propedeutic practicals [ 3 ] Visienota Extern afstuderen, Uitstroomprofielen Onderzoek en Ondernemen. To qualify for admission, a written request has to be filed with the Board of Admissions of the faculty. The Board of Admissions subsequently determines on the basis of the required certificate of Higher Professional Education and a specification of the courses taken (to be submitted via the transcript of grades) if the student can be admitted to the Pre-Master s track in question. 24

Article 5.2 Components of the educational program of the Pre-Master s track The Pre-Master s tracks contain the components and the corresponding study loads as specified in PART 4. Each year, it is decided which of the courses will be offered and tested in Dutch, in English or in another language. The students are to take the course in the language in which it is offered and tested in the year in question. In tandem with these courses, the School of Humanities offers for all Pre-Master s tracks a digital Dutch and English proficiency test. This Dutch/English language service is intended for all students who have enrolled for the first time in the Pre- Master s track in question. Article 5.3 Practicals Courses that include teaching sessions in the form of practicals are specified in article 3.2 and article

Section 6 Examinations and final examination of the program Article 6.1 Required order 1. Admission to the post-propaedeutic phase Students are allowed to take the exams of the second Bachelor s year, provided they have successfully completed at least 42 ECTS of the first-year Bachelor s courses referred to in article 3.1 and mentioned in PART 2. Any other admission to the post-propaedeutic exams is for the Board of Admissions to decide. 2. Order within the post-propaedeutic phase For the Culture Studies Bachelor s program: Students can start on their Bachelor s thesis or on their practical training (internship) (see PART 3) as soon as they have successfully completed 120-ECTS of courses that are part of the program, provided these include at least the following courses: For students who started their studies in the academic year or earlier: - the courses Methodology 1 (6 ECTS-credits) and Methodology 2: Empiricism (6 ECTS-credits), or - the courses Methodology 1 (6 ECTS-credits) and Methodology 2: Hermeneutics (6 ECTS-credits) For students who started their studies in the academic year up to and including : The courses Methodology 1 (6 ECTS-credits) and Methodology 2 for Students of Culture Studies For students who started their studies in the academic year or later: The courses Doing Research 2.1 (6 ECTS-credits) and Doing Research 2.2 (6 ECTS-credits) For the Communication and Information Sciences Bachelor s program: Students can start on their Bachelor s thesis as soon as they have successfully completed 120-ECTS of courses that are part of the program, provided these include at least the following courses: For students who started their studies in the academic year or earlier: Methodology, Statistics and the Research Practical 26

For students who started their studies in the academic year or later: Methodology, Statistics: basic techniques, Statistics Practical and the Research Practical For students who started their studies in the academic year or later: Methodology, Statistics for Bachelors CIW and the Research Practical For the Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelor s program: For students who started their studies in the academic year or earlier: Not applicable For students who started their studies in the academic year or later: Students can start on their Bachelor s thesis as soon as they have successfully completed 120 ECTS of courses that are part of the program. Article 6.2 Exam periods and frequency of exams 1. a. In every academic year, there are two opportunities for taking the exams specified in sections 3, 4 and 5, and in PART 2, PART 3 and PART 4. If a course is offered more than once in an academic year and/or if more than two opportunities for taking the exam for a course are offered, students are allowed to take part in no more than two of these. If in one and the same academic year students score more 27

than two results for a particular course, the third and following efforts are declared invalid. b. For students who entered the Pre-Master's track Communication and Information Sciences in academic year or later: The Pre-Master's track preparing for the Master Communication and Information Sciences is offered twice per academic year, dates of enrollment 1 September and 1 February. In every academic year, four opportunities are offered for taking the exams for the courses of the Pre-Master s track which are offered twice per academic year. Students are allowed to take part in no more than four exam opportunities per course in each year. Article 6.2 subsection 6 applies in this regard. In every academic year, two opportunities are offered for taking the exams for the courses of this Pre-Master's track which are offered once per academic year. If students fail to pass these courses after participating in two exam opportunities, they are to complete the corresponding courses in the other semester. Each year students are allowed to take part in no more than four exam opportunities for these corresponding courses per year. Article 6.2 subsection 6 applies in this regard. Students who are unable to complete all the courses of the Pre- Master's track in up to four opportunities, are not allowed to register again for the Pre-master's track Communication and Information Sciences. 2. Without prejudice to the provisions in subsection 1, students are at least offered one opportunity to take the exam for courses that were not taught in a specific academic year. If at this opportunity/these opportunities students fail to pass the exam(s), they will have to replace the course by another course. For the Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelor s program: To replace one course by another course, students need the approval of the Board of Examiners. For the other Bachelor s programs: For the replacement of one course by another, transitional regulations have been formulated. 28

3. If there are interim tests in the form of written exams belonging to the courses specified in sections 3, 4 and 5 and in PART 2, PART 3 and PART 4, students are offered the opportunity to take each of these tests at least once in each semester in which the course is taught. The concluding test takes place in the exam period immediately following the lectures of the course in question. During the resit-period students are once again offered the opportunity to take the interim tests that were administered in the periods mentioned earlier. If there are other forms of interim tests other than written exams, students are in principle offered one opportunity to take these tests. The test regulations for the courses that include interim tests are specified in the electronic course information. 4. If assessment takes place in the form of a project, a paper or an essay, these are to be submitted within two months after the end of the course. This applies to all courses planned for the full length in one of the semesters of the academic year calendar. Any second, revised version of a paper or essay is to be submitted before March 30 th for any course taught in the first semester; first versions of papers or essays written for courses taught in the second semester are to be submitted before July 1 st. Second, revised versions of papers or essays for a course taught in the second semester of the post-propaedeutic phase, are to be submitted before August 15 th. After these dates, students will have officially missed one opportunity. 5. If assessment of a course taught in the block system takes place on the basis of a project, a paper or an essay, these are to be submitted within three weeks after the last day of class of the block in question. Any second, revised versions are to be submitted at the latest on the last day of class of the block immediately following that in which the course was taught. Second, revised versions of papers or essays for a course from the fourth block are to be submitted before August 15 th. After these dates, students will have officially missed an opportunity. 6. Only if due to circumstances beyond their control students should not have been able to take a test in either of the two opportunities offered, can they appeal to the Board of Examiners for an extra opportunity. The appeal must be a motivated request, submitted in writing. The Board can consult the lecturer concerned for advice. 7. Students active in top-class sports can apply for top sportsman/-woman status, which entitles them to extra facilities with respect to the organization of their program, for instance, and/or financial support. As far as it is within its power to do so, the faculty seeks to accommodate these students 29
