1 TRANSFORM is looking for a researcher in Circular Building Economy - Design for Change The research team TRANSFORM of the Architectural Engineering Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is searching for a part-time or full-time researcher (m/f) for collaboration in a multidisciplinary research team supporting the Horizon2020 project Buildings As Material Banks (BAMB). Project The research team TRANSFORM exists for more than 10 years and studies how the current building practice can evolve towards a circular economy in which more importance is given to our resources, financial means and social aspects. TRANSFORM aims to bypass the excessive use of building materials and the enormous waste streams generated by the current building sector, but also unexpected life cycle costs by designing buildings with the future life cycle in mind ( Within the BAMB project ( coordinated by Brussels Environment (IBGE / BIM), the team is studying together with 16 international partners (BRE, EPEA, VITO, BAM UK, etc.) how valuable materials can be implemented in buildings today, without losing their value in the future. Therefore, different research topics are being regarded in the BAMB project, like the development of material passports, guidelines for Reversible Design during the design phase, circular business models, and integration of reversible design principles in real pilot case studies. The VUB team in the consortium is mainly active in 2 work packages, i.e. concerning Reversible Building Design Protocols and Case studies and Pilots. In our own pilot project Circular Retrofit Lab, residential modules on the VUB campus will be transformed into a testing lab in strong collaboration with Belgian industrial partners. The points of concern for these work packages are: Development of Reversible Design guidelines for existing building typologies in the context of Brussels; Testing of BAMB design tools for the transformation capacity and the reuse potential of buildings and building components; Development of innovative building solutions for renovation that are adaptable, demountable and reusable; Support of the pilot project Circular Retrofit Lab : collaboration with industrial partners, organization of workshops, etc.; Testing of material passports and BIM models in the context of the VUB pilot project; Making a publication about Reversible Design for a wide audience (e.g. architects, building contractors, producers) Therefore, were are searching for a candidate with competences for the following tasks: Scientific approach to the analysis of building typologies and the development of Reversible Design guidelines; Conceptualize innovative building solutions in collaboration with industrial partners;

2 Presentation of research results at (inter)national meetings, conferences, and output in publications, newsletters, etc.; Organisation of workshops with thematically different work groups for the joint development of new solutions with business opportunities. Profile You have a passion for circular economy and you can demonstrate your affinity with Design for Change topics based on your training, (research) experience, or personal projects. You are enthusiastic, independent and creative. You have a master degree in Architectural-engineering, Architecture, or related disciplines. You have two years of work experience in research projects, pilot projects or management of construction projects. You are a team player, able to deliver results in strong collaboration with a team of researchers and industrial partners according to a timing. You dispose of strong analytical and synthetical skills, able to carry out innovative research and to publish research results. You dispose of excellent communication skills in English (writing and speaking). You have a good working knowledge of Dutch if possible. You optionally have experience with BIM (Revit), LCA tools (SimaPro) and LCC tools. What do we offer A part-time or full-time position as a researcher for a maximum of 18 months, after a trial period of 3 months. The employment is connected to the European H2020 project Buildings As Material Banks and will bring the researcher in contact with an international multidisciplinary team of motivated researchers, combined with a pleasant working environment at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Brussels). 3 TRANSFORM is looking for a researcher in Circular Building Economy - Design for Change Het onderzoeksteam TRANSFORM van het Departement Architectonische Ingenieurswetenschappen van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) zoekt een deeltijds of voltijds onderzoeker (m/v) die in nauwe samenwerking met een breder internationaal team instaat voor de ondersteuning van het HORIZON2020 onderzoeksproject Buildings As Material Banks (BAMB). Project TRANSFORM onderzoekt sinds meer dab 10 jaar hoe de bouwpraktijk kan evolueren naar een kringloopeconomie die bewuster omgaat met grondstoffen, financiële middelen en sociale aspecten. Door gebouwen te ontwikkelen gericht op toekomstige verandering tracht TRANSFORM een antwoord te bieden op het overmatig grondstofverbruik en afvalproductie in de bouwsector enerzijds, en op onverwachte aanpassings- en sloopkosten anderzijds ( Binnen het BAMB project ( gecoördineerd door Leefmilieu Brussel (BIM), onderzoekt TRANSFORM samen met 16 internationale partners (met o.a. BRE, EPEA, VITO, BAM UK) hoe waardevolle grondstoffen die vandaag in gebouwen worden toegepast in de toekomst steeds hun initiële waarde kunnen behouden. Binnen deze context worden verschillende onderzoektopics behandeld, gaande van de ontwikkeling van materiaalpaspoorten, richtlijnen voor Veranderingsgericht Bouwen tijdens het ontwerpproces, circulaire businessmodellen, tot integratie van omkeerbare bouwprincipes in reële pilootprojecten. Het VUB team is voornamelijk actief binnen 2 werkpakketten die handelen over Reversible Design Protocols voor bestaande gebouwen en Case studies and Pilots. Binnen het eigen pilootproject zullen bestaande modulaire gebouwen op de VUB campus getransformeerd worden tot het Circular Retrofit Lab in samenwerking met Belgische industriële partners. Aandachtspunten binnen deze twee werkpakketten zijn: Ontwikkelen van Veranderingsgericht Bouwen richtlijnen voor bestaande gebouwtypologieën in de context van Brussel; Testen van BAMB ontwerptools die de transformatiecapaciteit en hergebruikpotentieel van gebouwen meten; Ontwikkelen van innovatieve bouwoplossingen voor renovatie die aanpasbaar, demonteerbaar en herbruikbaar zijn; Ondersteuning van het pilootproject Circular Retrofit Lab door samenwerking met industriële partners, organiseren van workshops, etc.; Uittesten van materiaalpaspoorten en BIM binnen het VUB pilootproject; Publicatie maken over Veranderingsgericht Bouwen voor een breed publiek (bijv. voor architecten, aannemers, producenten) Er worden daarom van de kandidaat verschillende taken verwacht, zoals: Op wetenschappelijke wijze gebouwtypologieën benaderen en ontwerprichtlijnen kunnen opstellen op vlak van Veranderingsgericht Bouwen;

4 Creatief meedenken aan innovatieve bouwoplossingen in samenwerking met industriële partners; Presenteren van onderzoeksresultaten op (inter)nationale meetings, congressen, en via publicaties en nieuwsbrieven; Organiseren van workshops met verschillende werkgroepen betreffende de gezamelijke ontwikkeling van nieuwe oplossingen met businessopportuniteiten. Profiel Je hebt een sterke interesse voor verschillende onderzoekstopics binnen de kringloopeconomie, toegepast binnen de bouwpraktijk van vandaag en kunt op basis van je opleiding of (onderzoeks)ervaring je interesse voor Veranderingsgericht Bouwen aantonen. Je bent enthousiast, zelfstandig en creatief. Je behaalde een masterdiploma burgerlijk ingenieur-architect, architectuur, of gelijkwaardig diploma. Je hebt reeds minimaal 2 jaar ervaring met onderzoeksprojecten, opvolging van innovatieve proefprojecten, of beheer van bouwprojecten. Je bent een sterke team player en kunt in nauw overleg met een team onderzoekers en industriële partners resultaatsgericht werk maken van de opdracht binnen een strikte timing. Je beschikt over een sterke zin voor wetenschappelijke analyse en synthese, en bent in staat om innovatief onderzoek te verrichten en te publiceren over het onderwerp. Je beschikt in het Engels over uitstekende communicatieve vaardigheden, zowel schriftelijk als mondeling. Kennis van het Nederlands is een bijkomend pluspunt. Je hebt eventueel ervaring met BIM (Revit), LCA tools (SimaPro) en LCC tools. Wat bieden we aan Een halftijdse of voltijdse tewerkstelling als onderzoeker voor maximaal 18 maanden, na een proefperiode van 3 maanden. De tewerkstelling kadert in het Europese onderzoeksproject Buildings As Material Banks, waardoor je terecht komt in een internationaal multidisciplinair team van gemotiveerde onderzoekers, gecombineerd met een goede werksfeer aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Brussel).
