3 American Language Institute Admission to most ALI programs is open to all persons 18 years old and over who have completed high school. ELST youth programs accept younger students. The U.S. government requires persons who come to the U.S. for full-time studies (18 hours per week or more) to obtain F-1 student visas. To apply for an F-1 student visa at the U.S. embassy or consulate in the student s country of origin, an I-20 form will be needed. An I-20 form is a government approved document issued by the ALI. To receive an I-20 form, students must first complete the ALI Application Form and provide a financial statement. Please allow a minimum of one-two (1-2) weeks to process your application. 5 I-20 Application/A ffidavit of Financial Support To receive an I-20, you must complete this form and provide a financial statement from you or your sponsor, certifying that you have enough funds for tuition and living expenses while you are in the U.S. The amount of funds you need will depend on the cost of the program you want to take plus approximately $1,000 per month for living expenses must be available. In addition, if you are bringing dependents, you should estimate an additional $500 per month for a spouse and $250 per month for a child.
