Its objective is to nurture excellence in visual arts, design and architecture in the Netherlands. Since it was founded in 1988 the Fonds BKVB has awarded more than 19,000 grants. Although it is fully financed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Fonds BKVB is an autonomous foundation and its decision-making process is entirely independent. All grant applications are reviewed by an independent panel of advisors, and grants are only awarded on their recommendation. The fact that all the members of these panels are themselves involved in, or closely associated with the world of visual arts, design or architecture means that the Fonds BKVB is able to respond promptly and effectively to both theoretical and more practical developments in each field.

5 Foreword Voorwoord Adventurers in deed, dreamers in spirit, traders hunting for profit, soldiers in arms, all of them crossing borders, fearless of the unknown. Risking the familiar in search of a new place for themselves, and changing the world in their wake. Shifting boundaries, opening up new worlds, exchanging exotic wares and new thoughts, like tiny seeds carried on a bird s claws. Man has always been in motion. If we could trace his movements from the beginning of time the world would be covered in a thick maze of neverending lines and loops. Whatever was still atypical, untouched or authentic in the cloverleaf intersections and flyovers of history is no longer recognisable. Things exist only in relation to change. Artists are among the earliest discoverers and voyagers. Long before concepts such as globalisation, the world economy, priority countries and internationalisation determined the political agenda, they set off on their various quests. In the Palaeolithic age they would walk from cave to cave, teaching their fellow man to see in the darkness, they crossed the Alps to spread the Renaissance, and in the 20th century they flew the Atlantic to give the new age a look of its own with modernism. And now they are heading East. Over the past few years the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture has received a large number of applications from artists wishing to travel to China. Their aims varied: some wanted to explore the country, others to capture its new urbanisation, change their own idiom, learn ancient crafts that were in danger of disappearing, or exchange ideas with Chinese artists. They exhibited, made work or absorbed all they could. Some of them followed their own way and created their own opportunities, others made use of the artist-in-residence programme and exhibition facilities offered by the CEAC (Chinese European Art Centre) in Xiamen. This renowned place, run by Ineke Gudmundsson, was the first landing point in China for the long distance travellers from the Netherlands. From Xiamen they would continue their journey or remain there for a longer period. All of them returned home with unique stories and new work. The huge interest of the Chinese for their work, the incredible crowds at the openings, and the attention they received, was all beyond what anyone could have expected. The aim of this small publication (and the temporary exhibition) is to give those that stayed at home an impression of what those early travellers to China discovered. They were instrumental in paving the way for the delegations that went on to set cultural exchange between the Netherlands and China in motion. The world may be smaller as a result, but it remains a mystery. Zij zetten het vertrouwde op het spel om nieuwe ruimte voor zichzelf te vinden en in hun kielzog verandert de wereld. Grenzen verschuiven, werelden breken open, uitheemse producten worden uitgeruild en, als klein zaad onder vogelpoten, worden nieuwe gedachten in nieuwe aarde gedrukt. Zo lang de mens bestaat zo lang is hij op drift. Zouden zijn bewegingen van het eerste uur af aan zijn vastgelegd dan zou de wereldbol bedekt zijn onder een dikke wirwar van eindeloze lijnen en lussen. Wat in die klaverbladen en fly-overs van de geschiedenis nog eigen, onaangeraakt of authentiek is laat zich niet meer herkennen. Alles bestaat alleen in verandering. Kunstenaars behoren tot de ontdekkers en reizigers van het eerste uur. Lang voor begrippen als globalisering, wereldeconomie, prioriteitslanden en internationalisering de politieke agenda bepaalden, trokken zij er veelvormig op uit. In het Paleolithicum liepen zij van grot naar grot en leerden de mens zien in duisternis, zij trokken de Alpen over om de renaissance te verspreiden, in de 20ste eeuw vlogen zij in het Westen de oceanen over om de nieuwe tijd met het modernisme zijn eigen gezicht te geven en nu trekken zij naar het Oosten. De afgelopen jaren heeft het Fonds BKVB opvallend veel aanvragen gekregen van kunstenaars die naar China wilden. Zij wilden het land verkennen, de nieuwe urbanisatie van dichtbij vastleggen, hun eigen idioom veranderen, zich verloren ambachtelijke technieken eigen maken, ideeën met Chinese kunstenaars uitwisselen. Zij stelden er tentoon, maakten werk of zogen zich vol. Sommigen van hen volgden hun eigen weg en vonden hun eigen mogelijkheden, anderen maakten gebruik van de residency en tentoonstellingsfacilliteiten van het CEAC (Chinese European Art Centre) in Xiamen. Deze roemruchte plek, geleid door Ineke Gudmundsson, werd een eerste landingsplaats in China voor de verre reizigers uit Nederland. Van daaruit reisden zij verder of zij verbleven er voor langere tijd. Maar allemaal keerden zij met unieke verhalen en nieuw werk terug. De immense belangstelling van de Chinezen voor hun werk, de onbeschrijfelijke drukte bij openingen, de aandacht en belangstelling die er was, de honger naar het nieuwe het tartte de verbeelding. Met deze kleine publicatie (en de tijdelijke tentoonstelling) wil het Fonds BKVB de thuisblijvers deelgenoot maken van de bevindingen van een aantal Chinagangers van het eerste uur. Zij effenden mede de weg voor de delegaties die culturele uitwisselingen tussen Nederland en China in beweging zetten. Mogelijk wordt de wereld daardoor fysiek kleiner maar haar raadsel zeker niet. 7 二 零 零 一 年 YEE LING TANG 2001 Yee Ling Tang (Amsterdam): Vroeg subsidie aan voor een nieuw fotoproject waarbij zij zich richtte op de westerse perceptie van de Chinese samenleving en andersom. Hiertoe wilde zij enerzijds foto s maken van de jonge generatie Chinezen in Nederland en anderzijds van een groep immigranten in China. Doel van het project was meer openheid te brengen in het gesloten karakter van de Chinese gemeenschap in Nederland. Ik ben na een aantal projecten op het idee gekomen om alles vanuit een ander perspectief te zien. Ik heb Nederlanders in China gefotografeerd omdat ik wilde weten of mijn ideeën over Nederlanders na mijn reis zouden veranderen. Wat mij interesseert is hun motief om in China te wonen, in hoeverre ze zich de Chinese gewoonten en taal eigen maken en hoe ze worden gezien door de lokale bevolking. Met andere woorden: in hoeverre hebben zij de behoefte en noodzaak om in te burgeren in de Chinese samenleving? Ik ben naar een opening van een Nederlandse galerie geweest, waar ze van Rembrandt tot Dalí verkopen. Ik heb daar in totaal maar 5 Chinezen geteld. Zou de Nederlandse gemeenschap in China net zo gesloten zijn als de Chinese gemeenschap in Nederland? Yee Ling Tang (Amsterdam): Requested a grant for a new photography project that dealt with Western perceptions of Chinese society and vice versa. This involved on the one hand taking photographs of the young generation of Chinese living in the Netherlands and on the other hand a group of Dutch immigrants in China. The project was intended to open up what has always been a closed Chinese community living in the Netherlands. Having completed a few projects I came up with the idea of trying to see everything from a different point of view. I photographed Dutch people living in China because I was curious whether my ideas about the Dutch would change after my trip. What interests me is their motivation for living in China and the extent to which they try to adopt a Chinese way of life and learn the language, and how the locals view them. In other words: to what extent do they feel the need to assimilate in to Chinese society? I went to an opening of a Dutch art gallery that sells everything from Rembrandt to Dalí. There were no more than 5 Chinese there. Is the Dutch community in China just as closed as the Chinese community in the Netherlands? 9 二 零 零 二 年 QIANGLI LIANG 2002 Qiangli Liang (Vlaardingen): Deed een aanvraag voor vervaardiging van nieuw werk, waaronder een aantal levensgrote bronzen sculpturen, ten behoeve van een tentoonstelling in Pulchri Studio te Den Haag. Liang maakte deze beelden tijdens een werkverblijf in zijn geboorteplaats Guangzhou, China. Ik was heel blij op 4 februari verder te gaan met de beelden. Mijn beelden werden groter en sterker en ik kon de vormen en de afdruk beter controleren. Gelukkig was er een nog betere gieterij. Alles ging eigenlijk prima tot de gieterij plotseling werd gesloten door de raadcontrole. Ik was als een mier op een hete pan. Veranderen van gieterij was niet mogelijk. Ik moest wachten en verloor mijn geduld. De laatste twee weken werkte ik lang in de fabriek en logeerde in de buurt. Op 30 juli ging ik terug en alle beelden waren net klaar. Qiangli Liang (Vlaardingen): Applied for a grant to carry out new work, including a number of life-size bronze sculptures, for an exhibition to be held at the Pulchri Studio in The Hague. Liang made the statues during a working visit to his birthplace Guangzhou in China. On 4 February I was really pleased to be able to continue working on the statues. They were bigger and stronger and I was getting more control over the moulds and the cast. I was lucky enough to find an even better foundry. Everything was going so well until suddenly one day the council shut down the foundry. I was left high and dry. There was no way I could go to another foundry. I was forced to wait and in the end my patience ran out. The last two weeks I put in long hours in the factory and stayed close by. When I returned on 30 July all the statues had just been finished. 11 二 零 零 二 年 ESTHER VERKAIK 2002 Esther Verkaik (Amsterdam): Deed een aanvraag om in te gaan op de uitnodiging van de Xiamen University in China om een filmproject aldaar uit te voeren. Verkaik wilde zich bezighouden met het maken van korte films over wat mensen daar bezig houdt, waarin handelingen of een proces te zien zijn, waarmee een uur of dag gevuld wordt. Esther Verkaik (Amsterdam): Applied to take up the invitation she received from Xiamen University in China to work on a film project there. Verkaik planned to make a series of short films about what people get up to there, what activities or processes can be observed and what each hour or each day brings. Op 23 mei ben ik van Taipei naar Hong Kong gevlogen en aansluitend heb ik een boot naar Xiamen genomen. In Xiamen heb ik veel mensen van de kunstacademie ontmoet en gesproken. De (kunst) cultuur is daar traditiegetrouw. Maar de laatste jaren zijn er veel mensen aan het knokken voor vernieuwing. De knappe subtiele vingers en handen zijn een veel gekozen blikvanger in mijn film. De titel is dan ook Handmate. Made in Taiwan. In de montage laat ik het ambacht van de handen en het eigen leven dat de handen leiden goed naar voren komen. On 23 May I flew from Taipei to Hong Kong and then took a boat to Xiamen. In Xiamen I met and spoke to a lot of people from the art school. The (arts) culture there is very traditional, but over the past few years some people have been trying to bring in new ideas. One of the eye-catching things in my film are the pretty, subtle fingers and hands. They even feature in the title: Handmate. Made in Taiwan. 13 Tiong Ang (Amsterdam): Nam deel aan het project The Third Space in the Fourth World in de Eastlink Gallery te Shanghai. Na de tentoonstelling maakte Ang een reis naar andere gedeelten van China, waar hij research verrichtte naar het dagelijkse leven en semi-documentaire videobeelden en foto s maakte als materiaal voor zijn verdere projecten. Op de drukbezochte opening werd het een veelbesproken en bewonderd werk. Het was een geweldige ervaring om te merken dat het gehanteerde idioom verstaan werd en dat de artistieke uitgangspunten van mijn werk niet alleen herkend maar soms ook gedeeld werden. Hoewel ik in Nederland ben opgegroeid en in het Nederlands ben opgevoed ben ik voor veel mensen een Chinees. In al mijn werk staat een kritische houding ten opzichte van heersende culturele waarden centraal, nooit op een openlijk politieke of agerende manier, maar als een solitaire beschouwing op de koers der dingen. In de reis door China vertaalde deze hybride houding zich in een niet-weten aan welke kant ik me diende op te stellen. Ik was weliswaar uiterlijk een Chinees, en ik kon mij daardoor lekker anoniem in de massa begeven. Maar zodra ik informatie behoefde viel ik door de mand, en werd ik gebrandmerkt als lao-wai, een buitenlander, een alien. 二 零 零 二 年 TIONG ANG 2002 Tiong Ang (Amsterdam): Applied to participate in a project called The Third Space in the Fourth World organised at the Eastlink Gallery in Shanghai. Following the exhibition Ang travelled to other parts of China to research daily life there and to shoot semi-documentary video footage and take photographs to use in his other projects. At the opening, which attracted plenty of visitors, there was a lot of attention and admiration for my work. It was a fantastic experience to see that the idiom I had used was understood and that the artistic basis of my work was not only recognised but to some extent also shared. Although I grew up in the Netherlands and spoke Dutch at home, many people still consider me Chinese. All my work contains a critical stance towards the prevailing cultural values not so much in an openly political or campaigning way, but as a solitary observation of the way things are. While I was travelling through China this hybrid stance transposed itself into a sense that I didn t know which side I should be on. Outwardly I was Chinese and this allowed me to merge anonymously into the crowd. But as soon as I needed information I was exposed as the lao-wai or alien that I really was. 15 二 零 零 二 年 MATTHEW MONAHAN & LARA SCHNITGER 2002 Matthew Monahan (Amsterdam) en Lara Schnitger (Amsterdam): Verbleven drie maanden aan het Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen. Tijdens dit verblijf waren Monahan en Schnitger verbonden aan de kunstacademie van Xiamen University alwaar ze een lezing en een aantal workshops organiseerden. Het nieuwe werk dat ze gedurende het verblijf maakten, werd getoond in de galerie van Xiamen University. Matthew Monahan (Amsterdam) and Lara Schnitger (Amsterdam): Applied for a three month stay at the Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen. During their visit Monahan and Schnitger were guest teachers at the Art Academy of Xiamen University where they gave a lecture and organised a series of workshops. The new work they made in the course of their stay was exhibited at the Xiamen University Gallery. Matthew Monahan, Civilized Special Zone, 2002 Schnitger: Normaal werk ik altijd alleen in mijn atelier maar hier in een land waar ik de taal niet spreek besloot ik om met naaisters, zeefdrukkers en Chinese computerfreaks te werken. Het was een superervaring, de Chinezen zijn van nature handarbeiders en hun hoge intelligentieniveau gecombineerd met al hun creativiteit en bereidheid om oplossingen te vinden werkte als een speer (Soms ging het mij zelfs te snel). Schnitger: Usually I work on my own in my studio but here in a country where I don t speak the language I decided to work with seamstresses, silk-screen printers and Chinese computer freaks. It was a wonderful experience: the Chinese are natural craftsmen and women and they re extremely intelligent. Combine this with their creativity and willingness to find solutions to everything and it all went like a rocket (sometimes even too fast for my liking). We often felt that we were witnessing some historical moment with a global impact, and this, combined with the details of travel, gave our work there a narrative responsibility. How could I represent this journey? These people? This crowd moving, multiplying, dividing? Forming lines, packs, teams and armies that march in unison. Making things: everything is or could be made in China. I had long considered Chinese painting and the solitude of man in nature, but in China it was impossible to ignore the social and civilising force of man on the landscape and in the cities. The blueprint carbon drawings I made there are a kind of cartoon assembly line, crowded with structures and people where images are churned out in a kaleidoscopic secession. 17 二 零 零 二 年 JEAN BERNARD KOEMAN 2002 Jean Bernard Koeman (Amsterdam): Deed een aanvraag om in te gaan op een uitnodiging voor deelname aan een artist-in-residence programma aan de universiteit van Xiamen. Aansluitend was een tentoonstelling te zien van nieuw werk dat gedurende het verblijf van drie maanden was gemaakt in het Chinese European Art Centre. MENTAL ARCHITECTURE (a travel survival kit). Jaar: Omschrijving: Site-relevante installatie in het CEAC. Totaalinstallatie met twee grote billboards, twee cargocarriers met een metalen skelet en groen insectengaas, en twee cargocarriers in metaal en board. In China maakte ik kopieën van deze specifiek gevormde voorwerpen (4 cargocarriers vormen samen een cirkel die precies in de buik van een vliegtuig past). Voor mij is de vorm en functie van deze boxen een metafoor voor de zich verplaatsende mens en een vorm van mobiele architectuur. Op alle sculpturen zijn kleine foto s en tekeningen aangebracht, de tekens in Mandarijn zijn kortere statements of teksten die handelen over mijn persoonlijke reiservaringen. De installatie is geplaatst als een parcours: al wandelend kan men langzaam inzoomen op de details. De foto s zijn voor het merendeel gemaakt in de artist-in-residence-werkperiode in China, afgewisseld door Lege Landschappen van elders. Jean Bernard Koeman (Amsterdam): Applied for an artist-in-residence program at Xiamen University, followed by an exhibition of new works at the Chinese European Art Centre. MENTAL ARCHITECTURE (a travel survival kit). Year: Description: site-related installation in the CEAC. Total installation with two large billboards, two cargo carriers with a metal skeleton en green insect netting, and two cargo carriers in metal and hardboard. In China I made copies of these carriers that have a very specific form, whereby 4 cargo carriers can be put together to create a kind of circle that fits exactly inside the belly of an aeroplane. For me, the form and function of these boxes is a metaphor for the nomadic human, as well as a form of mobile architecture. All the sculptures have had small photographs and drawings applied to them, the Mandarin characters are short statements or texts about my personal travel experiences. The installation has been laid out like a track: as you walk through it you can slowly zoom in on the details. The majority of the photographs were made during my time as artist-inresidence in China, interspersed with Empty Landscapes that were taken elsewhere. 19 二 零 零 三 年 ERIK VAN LIESHOUT 2003 Erik van Lieshout (Rotterdam): Vroeg aan voor een verblijf in het Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen. Van Lieshout was van plan daar de confrontatie op te zoeken met de Chinese cultuur. Hij wil het vermeende preutse, introverte karakter van de Chinezen aftasten en daar de grenzen van onderzoeken, oprekken en terugnemen. Erik van Lieshout (Rotterdam): Applied for a grant to stay at the European Art Centre in Xiamen. Van Lieshout s aim was to confront Chinese culture, to explore those aspects of the Chinese character that one usually expects to come across prudishness, introversion and test out their boundaries, stretch them and trace them out. Twee weken nadat ik in Xiamen was aangekomen ontmoette ik een Chinees meisje in de Kentucky Fried Chicken. Zij vroeg of ik haar Engelse les wilde geven en of ik haar een Engelse naam wilde geven. Uit een rijtje met namen koos ze Tessa. Door middel van allerlei spelletjes, oefeningen, Chinese traditionele dingen en de Engelse les leerden we haar en haar vriendinnen beter kennen. Ik probeerde haar leven te veranderen, wilde haar sterker maken. Het afscheid van de groep meiden en vooral van Tessa was moeilijk. Vooral door het besef dat wij makkelijk overal heen kunnen reizen en kunnen zien hoe zij leven en er commentaar op kunnen leveren. Voor hen is het eigenlijk onmogelijk om buiten China te reizen. Samen met mijn assistent hebben we met extra brieven, toelichtingen, beeldmateriaal en veel telefoontjes via allerlei officiële instanties en ambassades een visum voor 2 weken voor de twee meiden gekregen. Een enorm gevecht met de Nederlandse bureaucratie. Het was fantastisch en heel vreemd om ze weer te zien. A fortnight after I arrived in Xiamen I met a Chinese girl at Kentucky Fried Chicken. She asked me to teach her English and if I could give her an English name. I made a few suggestions and she chose Tessa. We played all sorts of games, exercises, traditional Chinese things and English lessons, and got to know her and her friends better. I tried to change her life, to make her stronger. It was hard to say goodbye to the group, and Tessa in particular. Especially since we realised that we were free to travel all over the place and see how other people live and comment on it. For them it s pretty much impossible to travel outside China. With my assistant s help, and after sending extra letters, additional information, visual material and many, many phone calls to various official bodies and embassies, we managed to arrange a two-week visa for two of the girls. 21 二 零 零 三 年 FEMKE SCHAAP 2003 Femke Schaap (Amsterdam): Deed een aanvraag om tijdens een werkperiode in het Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen een serie ruimtelijke videosculpturen te realiseren die daar ook tentoongesteld zou worden. Ook wilde Schaap een projectievrije lichtinstallatie van neonbuizen realiseren in samenwerking met glasblazers in Xiamen. Femke Schaap (Amsterdam): Requested a grant to work at the Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen, to produce a series of spatial video sculptures that would then be exhibited there. Schaap also planned to make a projection-free installation using neon lights, in conjunction with glass blowers from Xiamen. De Chinese blik op de Europese cultuur is in mijn ogen nog karikaturaal en grotesk, maar in haar omhelzing van de wens naar vooruitgang en modernisering ook confronterend. In de haven van Xiamen liggen operationele houten vissersboten -die eruitzien als VOC-schepen- naast reeds verlaten industriële complexen en voor het partijrestaurant staan uitsluitend zwarte limousines. Temidden van de meest onbegrijpelijke exotische plantengroei staan onafgebouwde wolkenkrabbers. Al deze locaties lenen zich als decor voor films die niet zozeer over China gaan, maar over een licht verschoven Westerse werkelijkheid. I find the Chinese view of European culture a grotesque caricature, but at the same time confrontational in its desire to embrace progress and modernisation. Xiamen s harbour is full of fully working wooden fishing boats that look like VOC ships from the 17th century, alongside recently deserted industrial buildings, and the Party restaurant is flanked by black limousines. The most incredible exotic plants surround unfinished skyscrapers. Ideal locations for shooting films not so much films about China as about a slightly shifted Western reality. Selected Spam, poster 2003 After a few weeks in Xiamen, we realised it was no wonder all of our plans were circling around communication and information. Understanding the system whilst junk information clogged our input channels. Notions of spam, pamphlets, the local rubbish collectors shouting out, rocks inscribed with Buddhist texts, advertisements, characters and neon signs led to works representing these chains of associations or, on a more indirect level, grew into portraits of people we have met and loved here. But the common denominator in all the works is that the pieces were triggered by one of the unsolicited messages we received by some form of advertising or another. Dogs, 2005

23 二 零 零 三 年 CHARLOTTE SCHLEIFFERT 2003 Charlotte Schleiffert (Rotterdam): Vroeg aan voor een verblijf in het Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen. Tijdens dit verblijf wilde Schleiffert haar observaties van menselijk gedrag verwerken in kleine tekeningen die daarna uitgewerkt konden worden tot schilderijen. De werkperiode in China werd afgesloten met een tentoonstelling in Xiamen. Ik heb veel gewerkt. In de beginperiode was ik erg bezig met het feit dat ik als Nederlander of als Europeaan in China was. Het Chinese leven is zo anders, dat ik me erg bewust was van het feit dat ik een foreigner was. Ik heb veel kleine tekeningetjes gemaakt n.a.v. Chinese tijdschriften (o.a. over vrouwen in het leger, wat veel gepromoot werd). Later ben ik grote werken op papier gaan maken (met inkt). Ik heb verschillende reizen gemaakt. Vooral Guilin en Tibet hebben veel indruk op me gemaakt. Guilin is omgeven door een prachtig berggebied. Ontzettend rare puntbergen, omgeven met water. Heel sprookjesachtig. Heb hier prachtige kleding van het Mao volk gevonden, wat me erg geïnspireerd heeft. Schilderijen die ik gemaakt heb, zijn hieraan ontleend. Omdat het me zo goed bevallen is, wil ik langer in China blijven. Ik probeer een woon- en werkplek te vinden. Nu alleen nog Chinees leren! Charlotte Schleiffert (Rotterdam): Applied for funding to stay at the European Art Centre in Xiamen. During her time there Schleiffert planned to put down her observations of human behaviour in small drawings that would form the basis for a series of paintings. Her stay in China ended with an exhibition in Xiamen. I produced a lot of work. In the beginning I was very aware of the fact that I was a Dutch person, or a European, living in China. Chinese life is so different and I was extremely aware of being a foreigner. I made lots of small drawings based on Chinese newspapers (about women in the army for example, as there was a big publicity campaign for this at the time). I went on to make large work on paper (with ink). I went on a few trips. I was particularly impressed by Guilin and Tibet. Guilin is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Very strange pointy mountains with water all around. Like something out of a fairytale. Found amazing local costumes worn by the Mao tribe, which inspired me a lot. Some of the paintings I made were inspired by these. I enjoyed the visit so much that I d like to spend longer in China. I m trying to find a place to live and work. 25 二 零 零 四 年 JEROEN JACOBS 2004 Jeroen Jacobs (Rotterdam): Verbleef voor een werkperiode van 3 maanden als artist-in-residence in het Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) in Xiamen, waar Jacobs zich bezig hield met onderzoek en het maken van nieuw werk, kleine projecten in de openbare ruimte. Kort voordat ik naar Xiamen ging was ik begonnen met een aantal kleinere beelden van beton. Het idee om me nadrukkelijk op mijn betonnen beelden te richten kon geen betere tijdstip en plek vinden dan tijdens deze residentie in Xiamen. Het was opvallend te zien hoe frequent dit materiaal op straat te vinden is. Overheersend waren natuurlijk de betonnen skeletten van talrijke nieuwe gebouwen, in de oude stadsdelen daarentegen wordt elke reparatie uitgevoerd met beton en rondom de gedeeltelijk open kanalisatie worden de gekste bochtjes, bruggetjes voor fietsen en karretjes gebouwd, van beton. Iedere dag kwam ik wel iemand tegen met een emmertje natte cement. Jeroen Jacobs (Rotterdam): Has spent 3 months working as artist-inresidence at the Chinese Art Centre (CEAC) in Xiamen. Jacobs focused on researching and making new work, small projects in the public space. Shortly before I left for Xiamen I had started on a series of smaller statues in concrete. The idea to concentrate all my efforts on my concrete statues could not have come at a better time or in a better place than during the residency in Xiamen. It struck me how much concrete was used on the street. The concrete skeletons of the many new buildings that were shooting up all over the place were particularly noticeable, whereas in the old neighbourhoods of the city all the repairs were done with concrete, and around the partly open canalisation you d see the strangest little bends, bridges for cyclists and carts and so on, all built of concrete. 27 二 零 零 四 年 HULYA YILMAZ 2004 Hulya Yilmaz (Rotterdam): Aanvraag voor een werkperiode van 3 maanden in Xiamen (China) waar zij op uitnodiging van het Chinese European Art Centre aan het artist-in-residence programma kon deelnemen. Daar maakte zij gebruik van de aanwezige materialen, o.a. steen en brons, en beschikbare technische vakmensen. Een van de onderdelen uit haar project Movement werd omgezet in een driedimensionaal bronzen beeld dat na afloop in Xiamen geëxposeerd zou worden. Hulya Yilmaz (Rotterdam): applied for a 3-month stay in Xiamen, China where she was invited to be an artist-in-residence at the European Art Centre. She planned to use the materials at her disposal there, i.e. stone and bronze, and rope in the technical experts living in the area. She hoped to use one of the parts of her Movement project to create a three-dimensional bronze statue that would go on to be exhibited in Xiamen. Ik weet niet, hoe ze het beeld gaan hakken...ik denk eerst met machines (als ze slim zijn) daarna handwerk... maar de steen wordt eerst opgehaald van de steengroeve (van de week dus). Voordat ze starten word ik er bijgehaald. Heb een tijdje terug graniet uitgezocht (graniet komt hier namelijk vandaan) en ben een week geleden wezen kijken.. het is hier 3 uur vandaan en ik heb in Stone City (zelf verzonnen) mijn bloedeigen steen bewonderd...niet 15 ton, maar liefst 19 ton steen lag daar (dat zien alleen al!!) op mij te wachten, en ze waren maar vast begonnen met stukken eraf halen (slijptollen, drilboren, steenbeitels) zodat ze grote delen in een keer weg kunnen bikken..geweldig! Ik heb modellen meegenomen, (3D) dus dat kopiëren ze. I don t know how they re going to cut the sculpture out of the rock.. I think they ll start off with machines (if they re clever) and then continue by hand.. but the stone first has to be collected from the quarry (this week). Before they start they re going to consult me. A while ago I chose a piece of granite (granite comes from here) and last week I went to have a look.. it s a three hour drive and in Stone City (I made up the name myself) I got my first look at my very own slab of stone...not 15 tons, but 19! Just seeing such a huge piece of stone was amazing. They d already started hacking pieces out of it, using grinders, drills and rock bits, to get the biggest pieces away in one go.. amazing! 29 二 零 零 四 年 ERIK OLOFSEN 2004 Erik Olofsen (Amsterdam): Aanvraag om een nieuwe installatie te maken gedurende een werkperiode in het Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) in Xiamen. Olofson wilde zich bezighouden met het ontwikkelen van werken waarin verschillende elementen en disciplines samenkomen en elkaar versterken. Aan de werkperiode was een tentoonstelling verbonden in het CEAC. De weerslag in de werken en tentoonstellingen die na mijn werkperiode in China zijn ontstaan is bijvoorbeeld te vinden in de installatie In places, hierin is een stadsgezicht te zien waarin stukken stad, deels over elkaar heen gesmeten, de ruimte in beslag nemen en waarin de gebouwen worden overschaduwd door projecties van statistieken die langzaam in en uit elkaar schuiven. In een ander werk, de installatie MORAL CODING / RANDOM LOGIC was, onder andere, een industrie-robot te zien die eindeloos en onophoudelijk bepaalde elementen probeert in te passen in een een warrige constructie van hoekige vlakken, een grillig bouwsel dat zich constant transformeert en nooit een rustpunt schijnt te vinden. Wat me erg beviel, is dat men nergens van op keek. Als je iets op een bepaalde manier gemaakt of gezaagd wilde hebben, dan werd dat simpelweg gewoon zo gedaan, zonder dat er een discussie ontstond of gevraagd werd naar je bedoelingen. Het feit dat geld in mindere mate een rol speelt dan in Europa hoeft niet perse te leiden tot beter werk, maar heeft mij wel enorm gestimuleerd om experimenten uit te voeren. Erik Olofsen (Amsterdam): Applied for funding to make a new installation during an artist-in-residence project at the Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) in Xiamen. Olofson focused on making work that brings together different elements and disciplines that will reinforce one another. His stay was rounded off with an exhibition at the CEAC. The repercussions of the time I spent working in China on the exhibitions and works that came about in the period immediately following it can be seen in a work like In places. This features a cityscape with pieces of the city thrown on top of each other, taking up space, and where the buildings are overshadowed by projected statistics that gradually fade into each other. Another piece, the MORAL CODING/RANDOM LOGIC installation, features an industrial robot that keeps trying to fit certain elements in to a confused construction made up of angular surfaces, never stopping while the freaky thing keeps transforming itself, never seeming to rest. What I really liked was the way no one ever seemed surprised by things. If you wanted something made or sawn a particular way they just got on with it, without entering into discussion with you or asking why. The fact that money plays less of a role than in Europe doesn t necessarily mean you make better work, but it did really encourage me to experiment. In places (videostill), 2004 In places, 2004

31 二 零 零 四 年 FAHRETTIN ÖRENLI 2004 Fahrettin Örenli (Amstelveen): Deed een anvraag voor een werkperiode in China, o.a. in het CEAC in Xiamen, waar hij werkte aan zijn project over migratie. Örenli is in Turkije opgegroeid met Turkse mythen die hun oorsprong in Azië hebben. Als een archeoloog van de menselijke ziel wil hij de sporen van de tijd in heden en verleden onderzoeken. De tekeningen en schilderijen die hij in China maakte zullen uiteindelijk worden samengebracht met beelden die hij aan de andere kant van de wereld optekende. Fahrettin Örenli (Amstelveen): Applied for a grant to spend time at the CEAC in Xiamen to work on his project dealing with migration. Örenli grew up in Turkey with Turkish myths that originated in Asia. As an archaeologist of the human soul he aims to research the traces of time in the present and the past. The drawings and paintings he made in China will be brought together with images he made on the other side of the world. Molecule 03A (time of/and evolution), 2005 I d like to work by following the story that I wrote, Black Ghost Dog : It s a story about a boy that one day moves to a big city with his parents and his two dogs. At the first day his old black dog dies in a traffic accident. After the accident the boy gets lost in the middle of the city. He tries to find back his small village because he thinks of his home there and his memories and they are all part of that village experience. He starts to walk from one street to another in that big city with his young dog and the ghost of his black dog. They begin to see the problems of contemporary life.. Black Ghost Dog, 2005

33 二 零 零 四 年 AAM SOLLEVELD 2004 Aam Solleveld (Amsterdam): Deed een aanvraag voor een werkperiode van 3 maanden in Xiamen (China) waar zij op uitnodiging van het Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) aan het artist-inresidence programma kon deelnemen. Zij maakte tape-tekeningen waarin archetypes van Chinese architectuur en dagelijkse objecten werden gecombineerd met elementen uit de massa media. Het resultaat was te zien op de tentoonstelling Spatial Behaviour in het CEAC. Een van mijn doelen is tekeningen te maken die los staan van cultuur maar juist een soort oude symbolische logica aanspreken. (Misschien is het daarom zo interessant om telkens op het verkeerde been te worden gezet door de Chinese cultuur). Veel winkels in China zien eruit als een doos waarvan de voorzijde helemaal open is. Daar kan een rolluik voor. Een straat wordt een serie kaders. Veel straten hebben een galerij, een overdekte stoep. In de tape tekeningen maak ik met plakbandlijnen een ruimte, een plek. De kijker switcht heen en weer tussen het zien van de ene en de andere ruimte. In de tekening heb je door de werking van de galerij en de achterliggende winkels/opslag/restaurants verschillende vlakken, als een soort grote tekenvellen. Aam Solleveld (Amsterdam): Applied for a 3-month artist-in-residence programme at Xiamen s Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC). She made tape drawings that combined archetypes from Chinese architecture and everyday objects with elements of the mass media. The result was shown at an exhibition called Spatial Behaviour at the CEAC. One of my goals is to make drawings that are separate from culture but are more to do with a sort of ancient symbolic logic. (Perhaps this is what makes it so interesting to always be wrong-footed by Chinese culture). A lot of Chinese shops look like a box with the front completely open. Sometimes there s a shutter in front. A street becomes a series of boxes. Many streets have an arcade, a covered pavement. In the tape drawings I create a space, a place, with sticky tape. The viewer is constantly switching backwards and forwards from one space to the other. 35 二 零 零 四 年 TWAN JANSSEN 2004 Twan Janssen (Amsterdam): Deed een aanvraag voor een werkperiode van 3 maanden als artist-in-residence in het Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) in Xiamen. Janssen wilde in Xiamen een tentoonstelling maken van muurschilderingen van s die hij tijdens een eerder verblijf naar zijn contacten stuurde. Het idee om schilderijen te maken stond me helemaal niet meer aan en ik heb besloten om me te storten op de animaties en het eerste deel van PILOT 1.1 hier te produceren, zodat het ook hier tentoongesteld zou kunnen worden. De opening was geweldig. Ik stond afgepeigerd in m n eentje buiten en ik zag allemaal mensen naar binnen gaan, maar er kwam niemand meer naar buiten. Dit duurde zo n drie kwartier en inmiddels moeten er al zestig mensen naar binnen zijn gegaan. Ineke (Gudmundsson, directeur van het CEAC) kwam naar buiten en ik vroeg haar of het allemaal wel goed ging daarbinnen. Ze zei: Ik was je al aan het zoeken, Twan je moet gaan kijken, je weet niet wat je ziet. Binnengekomen zag ik inderdaad zo n zestig voornamelijk Chinezen alleen maar doodstil om zich heen kijken naar de verschillende animaties. Chinezen houden normaal nogal van kletsen en murmelen en druk doen met elkaar, maar iedereen was muisstil. Dat is eigenlijk het meest indrukwekkende beeld wat me van de opening is bijgebleven, dat iedereen daar zo heel lang stil stond te kijken. Twan Jansen (Amsterdam): Applied for funding for a 3-month artist-inresidence programme at the Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) in Xiamen. Janssen planned to make an exhibition of murals featuring s he had sent to his contacts during a previous stay in China. I couldn t face the thought of making paintings any more and I decided to turn my attention to the animations and the first part of PILOT 1.1 while I was here, so that it could be exhibited here too. The opening was amazing. I stood all on my own outside, completely exhausted, watching all the people go inside. Nobody came back out. This went of for about three quarters of an hour and there must have been about sixty people inside. Ineke (Gudmunsson, director of the CEAC) came outside and I asked her if everything was going all right inside. She said: Just the person I was looking for. Twan, you have to come in and have a look, you won t believe it. I went in and saw about sixty mostly Chinese just looking around in silence at the various animations. The Chinese tend to chat and mumble amongst themselves a lot but you could have heard a pin drop. 37 二 零 零 四 年 HEWALD JONGNELIS SYLVIE ZIJLMANS 2004 Hewald Jongenelis (Amsterdam) en Sylvie Zijlmans (Amsterdam): voor het project Ten To One / Made in China vervaardigden 100 Chinese kleermakers de garderobe voor tien gasten die de kleren op 10 achtereenvolgende avonden droegen tijdens een etentje op een afgelegen en open locatie in Nederland. Uiteindelijk komt de fotografische registratie samen in een beeld waarin tien personen in tienvoud voorkomen. De kledingstukken zijn unieke producten gemaakt door unieke mensen. Daarom hebben we in China honderd verschillende kleermakers ieder opdracht gegeven één kledingstuk te maken. We zijn naar China gegaan om die kleermakers te ontmoeten, en we hebben honderd nieuwe personen intensief bij het project betrokken. Het project volgt hier de weg die alle arbeidsintensieve productie volgt: Oostwaarts, Made in China! Maar wij weten precies wie het is die het in China gemaakt heeft. Terwijl het individuele in de fotomontage verdwijnt hebben we in China juist het persoonlijke opgezocht. Het keert om, onze Nederlandse gasten verliezen aan individualiteit en worden op een bepaalde manier inwisselbaar. De Chinese kleermakers worden zichtbare individuen. Hewald Jongenelis (Amsterdam) and Sylvie Zijlmans (Amsterdam): Applied for a grant to make a mounted photograph of a project called Ten To One / Made in China: 10 Chinese tailors produced the wardrobe of one guest, who wore the clothes on 10 consecutive evenings during a dinner party with 10 other guests at a remote, open location in the Netherlands. The suits are all unique products, made by unique individuals. We had a hundred suits made by a hundred different tailors. We went to China to actually meet these people and in doing so, roped a hundred new people in to the project. Our project followed in the footsteps of almost all products these days that require intensive labour: Eastwards! The difference is that we have personally met all individuals involved. Whereas the notion of individuality disappears in the eventual mounted photograph, we deliberately looked for personal associations in China. Our Dutch guests loose their individuality and become interchangeable but at the same time, the Chinese tailors become manifest.
