1 WEEKEND Zigzaggend door SONOMA COUNTY De belangrijkste wijnstreek van de VS Cuvée Californië Foto's: Ine Van der Stock Wie Californische wijn zegt, denkt in de eerste plaats aan Napa Valley. Maar dat zou wel eens vlug kunnen veranderen. Want Sonoma County, goed voor hectaren aan wijngaarden, is eigenlijk veel diverser. Naast proeven van heerlijke wijntjes kan je hier wandelen in de bossen, surfen op de golven van de Pacific en kayakken op de Russian River. LEENTJE DE LEEUW LEES 60 61

2 60 weekend 2 en 3 mei 2015 VERVOLG 59 Toeren en proeven ttijdens onze trip naar de westkust van de Verenigde Staten kregen we de tip om te gaan cruisen langs de wijngaarden van Sonoma County. Een uitstekend advies, zo bleek. Want bij alle mensen die we er ontmoetten, voelden we de liefde voor de wijn, de druiven én de streek. Een liefde die zich ook doorzet in de smaak van hun wijnen. Sonoma County, ten noorden van San Francisco, telt meer dan 400 wijnhuizen en 16 appellations, hier AVA s of American Viticultural Areas genoemd. De regio is daarmee de grootste wijnproducent van Noord-Californië. Al sinds de 19de eeuw vallen de wijnen uit dit gebied in de prijzen. En dat hebben ze aan twee dingen te danken: de verscheidenheid aan terroirs de combinatie van klimaat en ondergrond én het vakmanschap van de wijnbouwers. Succesverhaal In Sonoma worden meer dan vijftig druivenvariëteiten gekweekt. Zo is het koele klimaat in Carneros en de Russian River Valley ideaal voor de chardonnay (29% van alle druiven) en pinot noir (18%), brengen de warmere regio s Dry Creek Valley en Rockpile uitstekende zinfandel (9%) voort en is de Alexander Valley de ideale voedingsbodem voor cabernet sauvignon (22%) en merlot (14%). Maar wat ons de belangrijkste factor lijkt in dit succesverhaal, is de manier waarop de mensen omgaan met hun vak. Of misschien zeggen we beter: hun passie. Zowat iedereen die we ontmoetten, op een uitzondering na, heeft de leiding over een klein tot middelgroot bedrijf dat soms al generaties lang in de familie zit, maar net zo goed pas is opgestart. Bring your own bottle Toegegeven: niet elke wijn die we voorgeschoteld kregen, was even lekker, maar een Château Migraine hebben we hier gelukkig niet geproefd. Wat ons verder ook opviel, is de trots van deze mensen op hun regio en hun lokale producten. Alles is met elkaar verweven: de restaurants kopen hun ingrediënten bij de lokale boer of op één van de talrijke farmers markets elk dorp die naam waardig heeft er eentje en schenken uiteraard de plaatselijke wijn. Maar wat nog interessanter is: in de meeste eetgelegenheden kan je zelf een fles meebrengen en wordt er geen kurkgeld aangerekend als het een Sonomawijn is. Daarnaast hebben de wijnbouwers en druivenkwekers in Sonoma zich vorig jaar ook verenigd en zich ertoe verbonden om in 2019 een 100% duurzame wijnregio te worden. Zo zal Francis Ford Coppola, niet alleen gerenommeerd filmregisseur maak ook een belangrijke speler op de wijnmarkt, meer betalen voor 100% duurzame druiven. Wij trokken door deze fascinerende streek en deden volgende culinaire hot - spots aan. Een lijstje dat naar believen mag worden aangevuld... Annappolis Sonoma County Sonoma County Cast Winery in Geyserville Eén van de jongste, misschien wel dé jongste, in de regio en wat ons betreft dé ontdekking van deze reis. Het sympathieke koppel Jack en Ann Seifrick kocht dit stuk grond in 2011 en maakte in 2012 al hun eerste wijnen. Absolute aanraders zijn de Old Vine Zinfandel en Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. VERENIGDE STATEN Sacramento San Francisco Californië Los Angeles Cloverdale Geyserville Healdsburg Forestville Bodega Bay Russian River Santa Rosa Sonoma Kozlowski Farm in Forestville Hoewel het overgrote deel van hun gronden bestaat uit pinot noir-druiven, brouwt de familie Koz - lowski enkel wijn voor eigen gebruik. De rest wordt verkocht aan wijnboeren in de buurt. Al sinds de jaren zestig produceert men hier de lekkerste jam, gelei en fruittaart. Ooit stond alles hier vol met appelbomen, maar nu blijft er slechts een klein stukje boomgaard over. «Die bomen lieten we staan voor moeder, die hier nog steeds woont», vertel eigenares Carol Kozlowski ons. Mooi. THE BARLOW De Barlow bestaat uit hangars vol hippe winkeltjes, restaurantjes en tasting rooms. Als je hier je gading niet vindt, vind je ze nergens. Onze tip: de varkenswangetjes bij Zazu. Oogsttijd in Sonoma De druiven voor de schuimwijnen worden doorgaans geplukt in augustus, die voor de rode, witte en rosé wijnen in september. In die periode zijn er tal van festiviteiten gepland in Sonoma County. Tijdig boeken is de boodschap! Het WINE COUNTRY WEEKEND vindt in Sonoma plaats van 4 tot 6 september (sonomawinecountryweekend.com). De TOUR DE FUZZ op 12 september is de meest originele wielerkoers (50km, 100 km of 100 mijl/160km) die we kennen, met gratis wijn en eten inbegrepen ( Tijdens het RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY FES- TIVAL op 12 en 13 september treden onder anderen Buddy Guy en Dave Koz op ( Het SONOMA GRAPE CAMP is het enige wijn-bootcamp in Californië: zelf druiven plukken, wijncursussen volgen en uiteraard veel lekker eten en drinken. Een must voor wie zo n euro per persoon of euro per koppel kan missen. Van 22 tot 24 september ( Sky Pine Vineyards in Cloverdale skypinevineyards.com Op de heuvel, rond een grote dennenboom vandaar de naam, vinden we Tim Ward, de meest eigenzinnige wijnmaker die we tot dusver mochten leren kennen. Hier geen hip logo of fancy tasting room. Voor Tim mag het allemaal wat eenvoudiger en 'back to basics', met een meatball in plaats van prosciutto als hapje tussendoor bijvoorbeeld, maar gegarandeerd leer je hier nog een en ander bij over wijn. De wijngaarden liggen op meer dan 900 meter hoogte, meteen de hoogste van heel Sonoma County. Daardoor leveren ze kleinere druiven, diepere kleuren en rijkere tannines op. Onze favoriet hier: de Old Vine Zinfandel ($19 per fles).

3 weekend 2 en 3 mei in Sonoma County Gloria Ferrer in Sonoma De familie Ferrer was al lang actief in de wijnsector in Spanje toen José Ferrer in 1986 eindelijk de American Dream van zijn vader Pedro verwezenlijkte in Sonoma. Onze tip: de Royal Cuvée, voor het eerst gemaakt ter gelegenheid van een bezoek van de Spaanse koning en koningin aan de VS en sindsdien al een drietal keer geschonken tijdens diners in het Witte Huis. THE GIRL & THE FIG Net als de meeste restaurantjes in de regio wordt hier enkel met biologische, duurzame en/of lokale producten gewerkt. Vraag bij mooi weer een tafeltje op de patio. PRAKTISCH VERVOER Wij huurden een wagen type Compact via en betaalden 161 euro voor vijf dagen. Liever niet zelf achter het suur? Met de Sonoma Wine Trolley boek je een all-intour van zes uur met tastings & lunch. Sportievelingen huren een fiets en luxebeestjes een chauffeur. Info op sonomacounty.com. LOGEREN Wij logeerden op twee verschillende plekken, elk met hun eigen charme: Flamingo Resort in Santa Rosa is een iconisch jarenvijftighotel in motelstijl, waar Jayne Mansfield een graag geziene gaste was aan het zwembad. Zeer vriendelijke service in een ietwat ouderwets maar toch ook hip hotel. Vanaf 150 dollar per kamer per nacht. Auberge on the Vineyard in Cloverdale: Roxanne, de eigenares van deze B&B, komt erg dicht in de buurt van de perfecte gastvrouw. Haar ontbijt is om duimen en vingers bij af te likken en haar B&B is een oase van rust te midden van talloze wijngaarden. Vanaf 145 dollar per kamer per nacht. INFO: Pendroncelli Winery in Geyserville Jim Pedroncelli is 83, maar wij schatten hem hoogstens ergens vooraan in de zeventig. «Dat heb ik allemaal aan deze wijngaarden en de wijn te danken», lacht hij. Zijn vader plantte hier in 1927 de eerste druivenranken en tot op de dag van vandaag zijn Jim en zijn kinderen en kleinkinderen de drijvende krachten. Alexander Valley Vineyards in Healdsburg De ouders van Kristy Wetzel kochten deze wijngaard in de jaren zestig van de kleinkinderen van Cyrus Alexander, de man aan wie deze vallei haar naam dankt. Kristy loopt over van de liefde voor haar vak en familie. De wijnen zijn niet allemaal toppers, maar een bezoek aan het landgoed is een must. BARNDIVA Moderne keuken in een trendy interieur met een goed glas wijn of met één van de overheerlijke cocktails waarvoor ze hier bekendstaan. Tussenstop in San Francisco ERHEEN Vliegen doe je op San Francisco. Wij huurden op de luchthaven een wagen bij Alamo ( en betaalden 161 euro voor een compacte auto voor 5 dagen. Reserveer vanuit België: het is een pak goedkoper en bovendien bespaart het de automatische check-in aan de Alamo-balie, die je heel wat tijd kost. Van San Francisco naar Sonoma neem je Highway 1 met zijn prachtige uitzichten maar ook heerlijke kleine visrestaurantjes en oesterbars (foto rechtsonder). Stop zeker in Bodega Bay bekend van Hitchcock s The Birds of Tomales. LOGEREN Hotel Vertigo: Centraal gelegen boetiekhotel dat ooit te zien was in de gelijknamige Hitchcock-film. ETEN Lekker eten doe je bij 1601 Bar & Kitchen, een recent geopend Sri Lanka meets tapas -restaurant. Eén van mijn absolute favorieten. Wil je het iets traditioneler? Dan is John s Historic Grillde place to be voor een lekkere steak.
