Als je antwoord geeft op een vraag, dan is dat makkelijk: in de vraag staat het hulpwerkwoord voor het onderwerp van de zin, zoals in de zinnen hierboven. Do you like wine? No, I do not (don t) like wine. Can she sing? No, she cannot (can t) sing. Have they seen you? No, they have not seen me. Als je van een gewone zin een ontkenning moet maken, is het een beetje lastiger. De vormen van to be (am, are, is, was, were) zijn al hulpwerkwoorden; daar mag je not meteen achter zetten: This pen is made of rubber; the other pen is not made of rubber! Als er twee werkwoorden achter elkaar staan, is het eerste ook een hulpwerkwoord en mag je er not achter zetten: You may use a blue pen; you may not use a red one. Als er maar één werkwoord staat (een ander werkwoord dan to be) moet je zelf een hulpwerkwoord inschakelen. Dat gaat zo: - In de tegenwoordige tijd (present simple) gebruik je do (bij: I, you, we + they) of does (bij: he, she + it). - In de verleden tijd gebruik je altijd did. Let op! Als je do, does of did gebruikt, komt daar het hele werkwoord achter. You always take the bus, you don t take a taxi. He always goes to school by bike, he does not go by bus. In een bevestigende (gewone) zin gebruik je dezelfde werkwoordsvorm voor alle onderwerpen. (er is één uitzondering: to be heeft twee vormen) De onregelmatige werkwoorden leer je uit je hoofd en je gebruikt de 2e vorm. Dus: kiezen = choose - chose - chosen (chose = past simple) De regelmatige werkwoorden krijgen -ed. Dus: walk wordt walked, cook wordt cooked en help wordt bijvoorbeeld helped. Let op bij werkwoorden die eindigen op een -y, het werkwoord study verandert in studied, maar staat er een a, e, o of u voor de -y dan geldt de hoofdregel! Je zegt dus played en destroyed. Daarnaast zijn er de werkwoorden met een korte, beklemtoonde klinker, zoals spot - spotted en plan - planned. 6 More Past Simple Read Past Simple. 8 Comparisons Wanneer je welke trap van vergelijking gebruikt, gaat hetzelfde als in het Nederlands: John is een goede speler. - John is a good player. Is hij te goed voor het team? - Is he too good for this team? Nee, Peter is beter dan John. - No, Peter is better than John. Samen zijn ze het beste team. - Together they are the best team. Bij korte woorden (en woorden op -y) maak je ze ook net zo als in het Nederlands: snel - quick gelukkig - happy sneller - quicker gelukkiger - happier snelst - quickest gelukkigst - happiest Het maken van de vergrotende en de overtreffende trap, bij woorden die langer zijn dan 1 lettergreep, gaat in het Engels meestal wel anders dan in het Nederlands. Dan gebruik je more en most, zonder dat je aan het woord zelf iets verandert. belangrijk = important (3 lettergrepen: im-por-tant) belangrijker = more important belangrijkst = most important Er is een aantal uitzonderingen: good better the best bad worse the worst much more the most (enkelvoud) many more the most (meervoud) little less the least (enkelvoud) few fewer the fewest (meervoud) 12 More Comparisons Read Comparisons. Many and Much Voor het Nederlandse veel kun je in het Engels many en much gebruiken. Welke van de twee je gebruikt, hangt af van het woord waar het bij hoort. Als dat woord in het meervoud staat, gebruik je many. Als het in het enkelvoud staat, gebruik je much. Dus: veel water = much water. (enkelvoud) veel flessen water = many bottles of water.
