De wetenschappelijke kennis over deze relatie neemt op dit ogenblik in zeer snel tempo toe.het onderzoek heeft als finaliteit de positie van de diëtist(e)/voedingsdeskundige in zijn/haar hoedanigheid van verstrekker van voedingsadvies en voedingsvoorschriften op maat van de individuele patiënt of cliënt, uit te breiden en te verstevigen. Het is de bedoeling dit te realiseren via de ontwikkeling van een geïntegreerd instrument dat alle relevante dimensies van een goede dieetkundige praktijk op een gebruiksvriendelijke manier verenigt, dat aangepast is aan de huidige stand van de wetenschappelijke kennis en bovendien de noodzakelijke flexibiliteit vertoont ten aanzien van een snel veranderend en uitbreidend dieetkundig arsenaal. Het globale doel van het project is de ontwikkeling en evaluatie van een conceptueel kader voor een optimale geïntegreerde voedingsbegeleiding en dieetkundige behandeling van de patiënt/cliënt, conform de meest recente op voldoende evidentie gebaseerde wetenschappelijke inzichten en rekening houdende met alle relevante randgegevens van de patiënt/cliënt die nodig zijn voor een holistische benadering van de specifieke voorliggende gezondheidsproblematiek. Een bijkomende doelstelling is de uitvoering van een functionele analyse ter voorbereiding op de ontwikkeling van een software pakket dat de verschillende dimensies van een dergelijk conceptueel kader op een eenvoudige en gebruiksvriendelijke wijze kan integreren en ter beschikking kan stellen als een interactief medium van de diëtist(e)/voedingsdeskundige in zijn/haar dagelijkse praktijkomgeving en voor de studenten gedurende de opleiding. Door de combinatie van hydrometallurgische processen wordt er getracht om een minder tijdrovend proces te bekomen met een hoog rendement dat resulteert in een eindproduct met hoge zuiverheid. Molecular Design and Synthesis Koen Binnemans Clio Deferm Ontwikkeling van een merkerondersteund selectiesysteem voor schottolerantie bij triticale University College Ghent Abstract: Triticale combineert het goede opbrengstpotentieel van tarwe met de goede ziekte- en droogteresistentie en de lage N-behoefte van rogge, waardoor het een duurzaam en waardevol gewas vormt, voornamelijk voor veehouders. Triticale is echter gevoelig voor schot in regenrijke of vochtige oogstperiodes. Het optreden van schot resulteert in o.a. opbrengstverlies en verlies van kwaliteit en nutritionele waarde. Zowel het genotype als omgevingsomstandigheden evenals de combinatie van beide factoren hebben een sterke invloed zodat het probleem enkel via veredeling van schottolerante cultivars kan opgelost worden. Het onderzoeksproject heeft tot hoofddoelstelling een merkertechnologie te ontwikkelen die orgaan-, groeifase- en omgevingsonafhankelijk is om zo tot een efficiëntere selectiemethode in triticale te komen. Speciale aandacht gaat naar het voorkomen van het Vp1-ortholoog, welke een belangrijke rol speelt bij dormantie op transcriptieniveau in verschillende graan- en grassoorten. Een eerste luik van het project draait rond het ontwikkelen van een merker, gerelateerd aan het Vp1-ortholoog, die toelaat een onderscheid te maken tussen schottolerante en -gevoelige triticale-, tarwe- of roggerassen d.m.v. kwantitatieve reverse transcriptase-pcr. Bij deze techniek zal een verband worden opgesteld tussen de mate van expressie van het Vp1-gen en het schottolerantieniveau van triticale. Hierbij dient onderzocht te worden of er voldoende variatie in de expressie van het Vp1-gen bestaat. Na optimalisatie van deze techniek zal van een groot aantal triticalecultivars het schottolerantieniveau bepaald worden. De bekomen resultaten zullen vergeleken worden met resultaten afkomstig van regensimulatietesten en kiemtesten. Een tweede luik omvat het screenen van het totale triticalegenoom naar andere genen die mogelijk betrokken zijn bij schotgevoeligheid/tolerantie. De cdna-aflp techniek, waarbij geen voorafgaande kennis van genoomsequenties vereist is, zal hiervoor gebruikt worden zodat schottolerante triticalerassen op een brede genetische basis kunnen worden geselecteerd.de resultaten zullen aangewend worden om de veredeling naar schottolerante triticalerassen te optimaliseren. 2 Ontwikkeling van een optische transistor voor nanosensing bestaande uit één enkel molecule. Abstract: Tijdens dit onderzoek zal de toepassing van reversibel fotoschakelbare eiwitten als moleculaire versterker onderzocht worden. Geëxciteerde toestanden gevormd tijdens enzymatische reacties zullen via FRET fotochemische transities in reversibel fotoschakelbare eiwitten veroorzaken. Door de reversibel fotoschakelbare fluorescent eiwitten te visualiseren kan ereen beeld gevormd worden van individuele reacties die zich in-cellulo voordoen met zeer hoge spatiële en temporale resolutie. Deze techniek zalworden toegepast in een relevant biologisch systeem. Verder zullen er nieuwe reversibel fotoschakelbare eiwitten ontwikkeld worden om deze techniek makkelijk inzetbaar te maken. Molecular Imaging and Photonics Johan Hofkens Wim Vandenberg Ontwikkeling van een superefficiënt materiaal voor Faradayrotatietoepassingen Abstract: Faradayrotatie wordt momenteel gebruikt in verschillende applicaties zoals optische isolatoren, sensoren voor magnetische velden, detectie van biomagnetische velden en kwantum geheugen. In de hedendaagse toepassingen worden vooral anorganische, (super)paramagnetische materialen gebruikt die goede prestaties leveren. Doch hebben ze ook nadelen. Zo lijden zeaan magnetische saturatie bij magnetische velden lager dan 1T en hangt hun prestatie als Faradayroteerder sterk af van de temperatuur. Bovendien zijn deze materialen meestal erg duur en moeilijk te verwerken. Organische diamagnetische materialen daarentegen satureren bij veel sterkere magnetische velden en zijn relatief ongevoelig voor variaties in temperatuur. Verder zijn ze gemakkelijker te verwerken dan hun anorganische tegenhangers. Tegenover deze voordelen staat dat de Verdetconstantes van reeds onderzochte materialen uit deze klasse aanzienlijk lager zijn dan die van de anorganische materialen. Departement of Information technology Raymond Boute Opening up new dimensions in the study of complex nanostructures: revealing 3D atom positions, composition and dynamics. University of Antwerp Abstract: The goal of my proposal is to develop and design a powerful method to reconstruct 3D nanostructures on the atomic scale from single 2D STEM images. Determining the full 3D structure of heterogeneous structures will allow the identification of coreshell structures, impurities and other defect structures. This is highly desirable to understand and adequately tune functional properties. In comparison to other approaches aiming at atomic scale 3D reconstruction techniques, the proposed method relies on a simultaneous acquisition of 2D images each carrying specific information concerning the number and depth location of all atoms present. This so far unique approach of retrieving the 3D atomic structure will considerably reduce beam damage and will even enable me to introduce the fourth dimension of time in electron microscopy. In this way, it becomes possible to reveal atomic scale dynamics allowing, for example, the observation of diffusion processes and the determination of different equilibrium geometries of atomic clusters. Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT) Sandra Van Aert Karel van den Bos Open Semantic Cloud for Brussels Abstract: This project aims to cover Brussels, metaphorically speaking of course, with a cloud of structured and interlinked information elements produced by "atomizing" a collection of relevant databases and other resources. Linked Data is a global initiative to interlink resources on the Web using two "simple" technologies: Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI) for accessing the resources and the Resource Description Framework (RDF) for representing knowledge and annotating those resources. Various governments (UK, US, Germany) are launching initiatives to (a) make public sector data easily available with Linked Data and (b) encourage researchers to analyze the data as well as application developers to build applications around that data, in order to stimulate innovation, business and the general wealth of society. We believe the time and circumstances are right for Brussels to prepare for this evolution. Clearly the meaningful exploitation of such interlinked cloud-type resources requires the adoption of semantic technology, in particular so-called ontologies, that contain computer representations of agreements on concepts, facts and rules. To this end we propose to provide a platform for communities to collaboratively create such ontologies through natural language (NL). Those ontologies can then be used for the publication of annotated information in databases on the Web, and/or assist the automatic annotation of resources such as videos and images. The multilingual nature of Brussels presents an additional challenge to be addressed. Each member of the consortium is leading one of the four interconnected pillars of this project (see below). Members not only are top international-level experts in their domain, but also all have collaborated earlier (usually pairwise) in EU or local projects. The four pillars constituting the whole platform are: Ontology Creation, led by VUB STARLab. Expertise in methods and tools for ontology construction, based upon proven DB modeling techniques partly using NL. Applied to create a framework for knowledge management in which communities (stakeholders, adopters and users) play a vital role. This pillar mainly focuses on methodology and technology for guiding the community and its discourse to result in an agreed representation. Automatic Annotation, led by VUB ETRO. Large expertise in image and video analysis and multimedia representation and annotation. Applied to object and event recognition in multimodal databases using the ontologies created in the first pillar. Such annotation would allow language independent queries on those databases, when the ontology will be aligned with a multilingual terminology base created in the third pillar. Image querying to be developed according to the upcoming JPSearch standard, resulting in interoperability between query processor and various

4 (semantically annotated) multimedia repositories. Multilingual Terminology. Erasmushogeschool CVC will construct a multilingual terminology base within a given domain (including the variance between two terms in different languages). Such a terminology base can assist the automatic interlinking of different annotated resources based on their content. Makes navigation possible from one document in a language to a related document in another language. Atomization of Databases. Led by ULB WIT who will investigate how heterogeneous sources or implicit information in large databases may be scalably converted and exposed as RDF triples on the Web. This will in particular be applied to spatio-temporal knowledge, as such type of resource is becoming increasingly important for linking between various domains. The software artifacts of each pillar are also intended to be valorized independently, and potential for use cases of the whole platform is vast. The OSCB platform can drive a wide spectrum of services to be developed for the government, the private sector or the public. Valorization is twotiered: indirectly by the stakeholders (e.g., governments) who will be able provide new "business" services to the public, and directly by software service providers who for this purpose will exploit the linkages created by the semantic cloud of RDF triples. Some motivational proof-of-concept applications are: (1) the linking of CV templates, annotated video courses and vacant positions to allow competency matching, (2) language independent querying on annotated image databases (possibly automatically enriched with user tags, geo-tags, etc.) and (3) publishing public sector data on schools that, e.g., assists parents to locate suitable schools or enable industry/employment agencies to engage productively and proactively with technical schools in discussions about curricula content. Informatics and Applied Informatics Electronics and Informatics ROBERT MEERSMAN Bart JANSEN OPERA4FEV: OPerating RAck For Full-Electric Vehicle Abstract: The OPERA4FEV project aims to develop thermoplastic battery racks on two functional demonstrators: one for a large scale vehicle from FIAT and one for a "niche" car, the F-City from FAM.To improve deployment of electrical vehicles in Europe, large scale production processes for Rack and electrical components need to be developed. The innovative solutions proposed by OPERA4FEV will integrate electrical, hydraulic connections and component housing in a thermoplastic approach to reduce cost, weight and assembly time.in order to show the relevance of the solution and meet strong industrial benefits, the two thermoplastics racks will be manufactured and assembled with industrial means. The whole value chain will be addressed, including the eco-design (dismantling and recycling of critical materials), assembly and integration of cells and electrical components. As safety of the on-board battery in electric, hybrid, and plug-in vehicles is of paramount importance to the international automakers, OPERA4FEV will pay particular attention to evaluate the effects of the rack characteristics regarding vehicle crash safety, and will focus on the potential risks for the vehicle and its occupants in case of failure of one or more batteries. The aim is to increase efficient usage of key hospital resources by supporting human planners at hospital admission offices with automated tools for their daily and weekly decision making. Three planningprocesses concerned with admission scheduling of patients are considered: assignment of admitted patients to hospital rooms, determination of admission dates for elective surgical patients, and scheduling surgical cases in operating rooms.the planning process of assigning patients to hospital rooms and wards is the subject of two studies. Firstly, areactive and an anticipatory decision support model are presented for daily decision making on patient-to-room assignments.
