4 Music Show Scotland The Music Show Scotland eenmalig in Nederland Door Kees Westerkamp De grootste Schotse indoor muziekshow ter wereld is op zaterdag 23 maart in Apeldoorn. Meer dan 200 pipers, drummers, danseressen, muzikanten en zangeressen bieden een 3 uur durend programma met het speciaal gebouwde Highland Valley Castle als decor. Een must voor iedere liefhebber van Schotse muziek want alle muzikale hoogtepunten uit de Schotse hooglanden zijn tijdens de show te horen. Blikvanger is The Massed Pipes and Drums bestaande uit doedelzakspelers en drummers van 9 pipe bands. Zij begeleiden in Apeldoorn onder andere de bariton Ernst Daniël Smid. Klein begonnen De oorsprong van de show ligt in 2004 toen wij als Borculose doedelzakband ons eerste concert gaven, vertelt Hans Beerten, directeur van Beerten Events, de organisator van The Music Show Scotland. Hij is ook de muzikale gastheer en dirigent van de 3 uur durende show. Dat eerste concert was in de buitenlucht en trok, ondanks de regen, veel bezoekers. We wilde liever onder een dak spelen en zo ontstond in 2006 de eerste indoor show. Door de samenwerking met Celtic Stepfire, een Ierse dansgroep uit Duitsland ontstond het idee om de show ook in Duitsland op te voeren. Aanvankelijk in kleine hallen maar de show werd steeds groter. Er kwam versterking van diverse pipe bands en Schotse dansgroepen uit Duitsland en Nederland. De bezoekersaantallen namen zo sterk toe dat na de zomer van 2010 zalen werd geprogrammeerd met minimaal zitplaatsen. 5 Music Show vervolg Hoogtepunt in Berlijn The Music Show Scotland, of Musikschau Schottland zoals de Duiters de show kennen, trekt al jaren volle zalen in Duitsland en bezorgt menig bezoeker kippevel. Iedere maand is de show in een andere Duitse stad te zien. Het publiek in Trier, Hamburg, Flensburg, Erfurt, Kiel, Stuttgart en Koblenz is enthousiast over de show. En in 2013 en 2014 zal de show nog diverse Duitse steden aandoen waaronder Ulm en Frankfurt am Main. Hoogtepunt voor velen muzikanten was de show in Berlijn in april Toen was de wereldberoemde doedelzak band The Pipes and Drums of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards te gast in de show vanwege het 30 jarige jubileum van het muziekstuk Highland Cathedral, aldus drum major Geertjan van Rooij uit Tilburg. Hij maakt deel uit van het internationale drum major display team dat ook regelmatig te gast is in de show. Hij was er met het team bij in Berlijn. Tevens is hij ook een van de vijf drum majors van The Massed Pipes and Drums. Tijdens die show in Berlijn was de componist van Highland Cathedral, Michael Korb, eregast en dat gaf het optreden een speciaal tintje. Ook in Apeldoorn wordt het wereldberoemde Highland Cathedral gespeeld in een speciaal arrangement. Kippenvel gegarandeerd Als The Massed Pipes and Drums in Full Dress uniform door de kasteelpoort komt marcheren, is kippenvel gegarandeerd. De formatie is samengesteld uit pipers en drummers van negen verschillende pipe bands. Nederlanders, Duitsers, Schotten en Engelsen die speciaal voor The Music Schow Scotland samen Schotse tunes hebben ingestudeerd. Legendarische muziek als Amazing Grace, Conquest of Paradise, When The Pipers Play, Muss I Denn en The Flower of Scotland zijn slechts een klein onderdeel van het 3 uur durende programma. Combinaties van traditionele muziek met moderne pop- en rockmuziek, verzorgd door de eigen Castleband en de nodige Schots/Ierse zang en dans, staan garant voor een 5 Jaargang 7 Nummer 3 februari 2013

6 Music Show vervolg afwisselende avond. De show kent vele muzikale bijzonderheden. Zo is er de drum salute, uitgevoerd door drummers van verschillende pipe bands, die menig bezoeker verbaast. Maar ook het Schotse Highland Dancing en het Ierse Tapdancing, bekend van o.a. Riverdance, ontmoeten elkaar. Dansgroepen voeren begeleid door live-muziek traditionele en moderne dansen op. Dat kasteel is een verhaal op zich, vertelt Benno Beerten. Er zijn zes vrachtwagens nodig om het levensgrote kasteel, bestaande uit onder meer kilo staal en kilo hout, en de spectaculaire licht en geluidsshow te vervoeren. Highland Valley Castle is speciaal ontwikkeld voor de Music Show Scotland en is met zijn 70 meter breed en 12 meter hoog, een unieke setting voor deze showproductie. In Apeldoorn voegen we nieuwe onderdelen toe: twee hoektoren. Tijdens de show wordt het kasteel niet alleen gebruikt als decor en toegangspoort tot de zaal. Op drie niveaus kunnen muzikanten staan en dat geeft de toeschouwers een mooi uitzicht. Vijf touringcars brengen de artiesten van stad naar stad waar eenmaal per maand, op een zaterdag, een of twee shows worden opgevoerd. De bouwploeg begint op de donderdag voor de show met de opbouw van het kasteel, de speciale vloer waarop gemacheerd en gedanst wordt en de licht- en geluidsinstallatie. Als op zaterdagochtend de muzikanten, danseressen en zangeressen arriveren is de zaal helemaal klaar voor de generale repetities die doorgaan tot aan het avondeten, aldus Benno die zich na het opbouwen van het kasteel moet haasten om zich klaar maakt om doedelzak te spelen. Militaire operatie, zowel organisatorisch als muzikaal Achter The Music Show Scotland gaat een bijzondere organisatie schuil. Schotland heeft een rijk aanbod aan kwaliteitsproducten; denk aan wild, gevogelte en vis plus paddestoelen en vruchten die hier nog volop in de natuur geplukt kunnen worden. In onze eigen rokerij kunt u leren hoe o.a. vis, kaas en bacon wordt gerookt en het zelf bereiden van pasta, paté, worst en brood behoort eveneens tot de mogelijkheden. De 200 artietsen moeten tijdig van bladmuziek worden voorzien. Voor de meeste muziekstukken worden speciale arrangementen geschreven. En dat zorgt voor de bijzondere uitvoeringen van bijvoorbeeld Highland Cathedral, Scotland The Brave/We Will Rock you en de Millenium Prayer, vertel pipe major Ap Loskamp van The Clan MacBeth Pipe Band uit Groningen. Zijn band doet sinds september 2011 mee aan de show en is een van de vier Nederlandse bands in de show. Naast MacBeth zijn er de bands van het eerste uur, Highland Valley Pipes and Drums uit Borculo en The City of Apeldoorn Pipes and Drums. In Apeldoorn, op 23 maart, doet Pegasus Pipes and Drums uit Barneveld voor de eerste keer mee. En dan zijn er nog de Duitse pipe bands waaronder The Alba Pipes and Drums uit Hildesheim die onder leiding staat van een rasechte Schot, Eion Ashford. Hij is ook de senior piper major van de show en is verantwoordelijk voor de doedelzakmuziek en de repetities van de bands. Vanuit het hoofdkantoor in Borculo wordt de promotie van de show geregeld. Dat gaat dan niet alleen om de website, de pagina op facebook, de flyers/posters en de advertenties en interviews in de kranten. Maar ook de bijdrage aan televisieprogramma s. Zo was de cast van The Music Show Scotland te gast in een grote Duitse televisieshow en was de Berlijnse zender Rbb live te gast toen de productie in Berlijn te was zien. Ook voor de muzikanten is het digitaal goed geregeld. Behalve een forum, waar men kan discussiëren over de muziek en foto s kan uitwisselen, is er ook een apart systeem waar de bandmanagers hun muzikanten kunnen indelen voor de show en de hotels die nodig zijn voor show. Het systeem laat ook zien hoeveel artiesten er precies komen en dat is weer informatie die de keuken nodig heeft. De show heeft een eigen mobiele keuken die gedurende het weekend de maaltijden verzorgt en verantwoordelijk is voor after party. Een belangrijk onderdeel van de show is natuurlijk de catering en de gezelligheid. Een goede sfeer is belangrijk voor de kwaliteit van de show. Ik heb bij de show al vele vrienden gemaakt. Het gehele weekend staat in teken van muziek en dat is super. Ik kijk iedere 7 Jaargang 7 Nummer 3 februari 2013

Apeldoorn: bijzondere show Op zaterdag 23 maart is The Music Show Scotland eenmalig in Nederland en wel in de Omnisporthal in Apeldoorn. Het wordt een bijzondere show, vertrouwt Hans Beerten ons toe. Het is de eerste keer sinds jaren dat de show in de huidige vorm in Nederland is. Er was veel vraag naar twee voorstellingen op eigen bodem. En we hebben niemand minder dan bariton en tv-presentator Ernst Daniël Smid bereid gevonden voor een gastoptreden. Net als The Music Show Scotland begon hij zijn muziale carriëre in de Achterhoek en ook hij behaalde vele successen in Duitsland. Voor beide voorstellingen zijn meer dan kaarten beschikbaar maar de kaartverkoop verloopt zeer goed. Voor de avondvoorstelling zijn nog maar een paar kaarten beschikbaar. Voor de middagvoorstelling zijn er momenteel nog kaarten. Hans Beerten: Maar de kaartverkoop verloopt boven ieders verwachting. He was led to Northampton with his feet tied beneath his horse and imprisoned at Falaise in Normandy. He was released, but under the Treaty of York in 1175 he was forced to accept Henry as overlord of Scotland. English troops were stationed in Scotland at Roxburgh, Berwick and Edinburgh castles, and the Church of Scotland was made subject to the Church of England. 13 kings & queens vervolg Alexander III (Alaxandair mac Alaxandair) was the son of Alexander II and a boy when his father unexpectedly died. He was married to Margaret, daughter of Henry III of England, when he was just 10 years old. His minority years were dominated by infighting between Comyn and Durward families. In 1259 Alexander assumed power and was determined to complete his father s quest to conquer the Western Isles. Sending an army to attack the Norse in the Hebrides he provoked a Norwegian response in 1263 when King Haakon sailed his fleet to the west coast port of Largs. The battle was inconclusive but Haakon died on Orkney. Three years later at the Treaty of Perth Norway ceded control of the Hebrides to Scotland. She was born in Norway and had never set foot in Scotland. A marriage deal was negotiated in 1290 with King Edward I that she would marry his young son the future Edward II. In September she sailed from Norway but never arrived, as she died aged 7 of sea sickness in or near the Orkneys during the voyage. With an area of 432 square kilometres (167 sq mi) it is the seventh largest Scottish island. It is in the unitary council area of North Ayrshire. In the 2001 census it had a resident population of 5,058. Although it is culturally and physically similar to the Hebrides, it is separated from them by the Kintyre peninsula. Arran is mountainous and has been described as a geologist s paradise. Arran has been continuously inhabited since the early Neolithic period, and numerous prehistoric remains have been found. From the 6 th century onwards, Goidelic-speaking peoples from Ireland colonised the island and it became a centre of religious activity. 16 isle of arran vervolg land in the 13th century. The 19th century clearances led to significant depopulation and the end of the Gaelic language and way of life. The economy and population have recovered in recent years, the main industry being tourism. There is diversity of wildlife, including three species of tree endemic to the area. Etymology Most of the islands of Scotland have been occupied by the speakers of at least four languages since the Iron Age, and many of the names of these islands have more than one possible meaning as a result. Arran is therefore not unusual in that the derivation of the name is far from clear. Mac an Tàilleir (2003) states that it is said to be unrelated to the name Aran in Ireland (which means kidney shaped, cf Irish ára kidney ). Unusually for a Scottish island, Haswell-Smith (2004) offers a Brythonic derivation and a meaning of high place which at least corresponds with the geography - Arran is significantly loftier than all the land that immediately surrounds it along the shores of the Firth of Clyde. Any other Brythonic place names that may have existed were later replaced on Arran as the Goidelic-speaking Gaels spread from Ireland via their adjacent kingdom of Dál Riata. During the Viking Age the island, along with the vast majority of the Scottish islands, became the property of the Norwegian crown, at which time it may have been known as Herrey or Hersey. As a result of this Norse influence, many current place names on Arran are of Viking origin. Geography and geology The island lies in the Firth of Clyde between Ayr and Kintyre. There are three other Corbetts, all in the north east: Caisteal Abhail, Cìr Mhòr and Beinn Tarsuinn. Beinn Bharrain is the highest peak in the north west at 721 metres (2,365 ft). The largest valley on the island is Glen Iorsa to the west, whilst narrow Glen Sannox (Gaelic: Gleann Shannaig) and Glen Rosa (Gaelic: Gleann Ròsa) to the east surround Goat Fell. The terrain to the south is less mountainous, although a considerable portion of the interior lies above 350 metres (1,150 ft), and A Chruach reaches 512 metres (1,680 ft) at its summit. There are two other Marilyns in the south, Tighvein and Beinn Bhreac. Arran is sometimes referred to as Scotland in miniature, as it is divided into Highland and Lowland areas by the Highland Boundary Fault which runs northeast to southwest across Scotland. Arran is a popular destination for geologists, who come to see intrusive igneous landforms such as sills and dykes as well as sedimentary and metasedimentary rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Mesozoic. Most of the interior of the northern half of the island is taken up by a large granite batholith that was created by substantial volcanic activity around 60 million years ago in the Paleogene period. There is an older outer ring of coarse granites and an inner core of finer grained material. Sedimentary rocks dominate the southern half of the island, especially Old and New Red Sandstone. Some of these sandstones contain fulgurites - pitted marks that may have been created by Permian lightning strikes. Sand dunes are preserved in Permian sandstones near Brodick, there are localised outcrops of Triassic rocks and even a rare example of Cretaceous chalk. Visiting in 1787, the geologist James Hutton found his first example of an unconformity to the north of Newton Point near Lochranza, which provided evidence for his Plutonist theories of uniformitarianism and about the age of the Earth. This spot is one of the most famous places in the study of geology. The Pleistocene glaciations almost entirely covered Scotland in ice, and Arran s highest peaks may have been nunataks at this time. After the last retreat of the ice at the close of the Pleistocene epoch sea levels were up to 70 metres (230 ft) lower than at present and it is likely that circa 14,000 BP the island was connected to mainland Scotland. Sea level changes and the isostatic rise of land makes charting post-glacial coastlines a complex task, but it is evident that the island is ringed by post glacial raised beaches. King s Cave on the south west coast is an example of an emergent landform on such a raised beach. This cave, which is over 30.5 metres (100 ft) long and up to 15.3 metres (50 ft) high, lies well above the present day sea level. There are tall sea cliffs to the north east including large rock slides under the heights of Torr Reamhar and at Scriden (An Scriodan) at the far north end of the island.
