2 Handige informatie Parkeren bij de sporthal: Alle leden die met de auto komen kunnen parkeren op het parkeerterein. Er is alleen één beperkin en opnieuw vragen wij uw medewerking om de auto, wanneer je deze niet gebruikt die week, buiten het sportpark te parkeren. Parkeerkaarten voor het sportpark, voor leden die dat willen zijn te verkrijgen op het kantoor. Vraag Herman als je hier meer over wilt weten. Polo Shirts: Voor mensen die na de uiterste datum van aanvragen nog Polo Shirts willen bestellen, deze zijjn nog te verkrijgen in de maten sizes Medium, Large, XLarge and XXLarge. 4 Teaminformatie The following information comes from the Stichting DE 4DAAGSE, Chairman of the Vierdaagse. Dear group leader, You are registered as leader of a group for the 95th Four Days Marches. We are writing to inform you of the procedure for starting and signing off every day, en-route checkpoints and the trial we will be running this year with electronic en-route checks. In 2010, for the first time, our organisation performed electronic en-route checks by scanning a bar code on a wristband. The results were unsatisfactory for various reasons, and so we decided at the end of the second marching day to revert to using the tried-and-tested checkpoint cards. Since the board does recognise the benefits of wristbands and electronic checks, we have decided to continue developing a special wristband with a chip this year on a small scale. A lot of work has gone into this and we would like to test the developments made thus far in practice. This is why we have chosen to perform a small-scale, representative trial this year with all groups (both military and civilian) taking part in the Four Days Marches. How will this decision affect your group's participation? This year, all group participants will be given a wristband with a chip and a lace chip for their shoes. The two chips (in the wristband and on the shoes) will be linked with each other and personalised. The chip in the wristband will be used for the trial, whilst a reserve check will be performed using the lace chip in case anything should go wrong with the wristband. We are aiming to develop a wristband with a chip for all participants, so in principle the lace chip only needs to be worn this year for this trial. It goes without saying that we will do all we can to limit any inconvenience caused to walkers. The en-route check will be performed using mats placed over the entire width of the road. You and your whole group walk over the mat to complete the electronic check. What happens now? You need to report to the registration desk for groups at the Wedren on Sunday 17 July (between and hrs) or Monday 18 July (between and hrs), as stated on the confirmation of your registration. At the registration desk, you will need to present valid proof of your identity and a copy of proof of identity for all of your group members. After the proof of identity has been checked, the desk clerk will take you through the list of participants. Please inform the Central Administration staff of any inaccuracies straight away. If everything is in good order, you will be given an envelope containing a numbered wristband and lace chip for each participant. Please ensure that the correct combination of wristband and lace chip is given to the right person. You will be given a list to help you do this. If anyone is wearing the wrong wristband/lace chip, this will have unpleasant consequences for the correct administrative processing of your group members. Note: participants are obliged to attach the wristbands to their wrists and the lace chips to their shoes. Wristbands and lace chips are inextricably linked to participants registration numbers. Any orderlies in your group will also be given a wristband (but not a lace chip) to show that they are officially registered. However, they will not be scanned at the start and finish, nor will they be checked en route. They will receive the orderly medal at the end of the Four Days Marches. Start During the marching days (Tuesday to Thursday inclusive), your group must be present and complete at the start at the indicated location and the agreed time. All participants in your group will be scanned individually before you can start. Volume 55, Issue 1 Page 4

5 Team Information (Continued) Checkpoints A number of electronic checks will be performed en route during the marches. Signs will indicate when you are approaching a checkpoint. As group leader, please take the following into account: follow instructions from the checkpoint staff; ensure that your group is complete. Note: your group will be scanned within a defined period of time. Any member of your group not scanned during this period will be considered to have withdrawn. Finish Each member of your group will be scanned once again upon return to the Wedren. Your group must also be complete at this point. Group members not scanned within the finishing period will be considered to have withdrawn. Please follow the instructions given by the Executive Committee staff. The start procedure for Friday is the same as that for the other days and the en-route checks are also the same. However, in contrast to the other marching days, groups do not finish at the desk at the Wedren, but rather just off the Wedren. Upon arrival at the Wedren, please follow the instructions given by the organisation. It is crucial that all participants are also scanned individually on Friday. Once all participants have been scanned, the group leader will be given the rewards. As group leader, you are responsible for ensuring that all participants continue to wear their wristbands and lace chips until everyone has been scanned. You can then hand in the lace chip. More information about the finishing procedure will be provided during the week of the Four Days Marches. Here is a summary of the most important points: register your group in good time on Sunday/Monday (before hrs); ensure that wristbands/lace chips are given to the correct people; ensure that your group is complete during the marches and at the checkpoints and finish; always follow instructions from Four Days Marches staff; report any inaccuracies to the Central Administration straight away. We trust that this letter has informed you sufficiently. However, if you need any further information, please contact the Central Administration. 12 Blarenpleisters De argumenten voor en tegen blarenpleisters De BDWF first aid is vaak gevraagd waarom wij geen blarenpleisters gebruiken. Er waren geen dingen als blarenpleisters toen wij startten,met de Vierdaagse. Terus in de 1990 s; we waren gevraagd door de PTT (nu KPN) hoe je voeten moet behandelen in Nijmegen. Zij stopten met hun methodologie die jaren oud was. Wij hebben het beste van hun technieken over genomen en hebben wat veranderd en nieuwe producten toegevoegd zodat wij de beste service kunnen geven die kan. Blarenpleisters zijn goed voor korte afstanden en andere sporten. Ze zijn ook handig wanneer je voeten onconfortabel aanvoelen. Ze kunnen gebruikt worden tijdens de laatste dag van de Vierdaagse wanneer je niet zoveel meer hoeft te lopen. Er zijn ook BDWF leden die de pleisters gebruiken zonder problemen en erbij zweren. Wanneer het op een Vierdaagse aankomt kunnen blarenpleisters je grootste nachtmerrie worden. Wanneer je veel blaren hebt kunnen er blaren rondom de pleister ontstaan. Nu heb je een goed klevende pleister die er alleen vanaf komt wanner je de huid mee trekt en dus veel pijn geeft. Dus wat doet het First Aid team? Wij gebruiken zonloxide tape of mefix meteen over de top, of een pad met wondverband of een gel patch en dan tape. Wij kunnen garanderen dat je met de padding confortabel kunt wandelen, maar niet zoveel als dat goede sokken en schoenen nodig zijn. Zo voorkom je de meeste problemen. Wij kunnen je er ook van verzekeren dat tapen de circulatie niet in de weg zit en de flexible kunt bewegen. De stretch in Mefix houdt de circulatie in je voetengoed en de dunne strips Leukoplast (zinc oxide tape) vormen een sterke flexibele huid rondom de voet. We tapen nooit de wreef van de voet in omdat je hier geen blaren krijgt en je je voet dan niet goed kan bewegen. In feite waren het de RTT en de BDWF first aid teams die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de techniek die het Rode Kruis gebruik. Zij plakten tape op de hele voet en gebruiken nu onze techniek. 13 T-Shirts on Parade The Yorkshire Wolds Way T Shirts on Parade, this time on the Yorkshire Wolds Way. This is an extract from a much longer document as we took many months to complete the walk due to weather and holidays. April Sherburn, Yorks. Once again the weather was glorious albeit with a strong easterly wind. We started with a trip to the post office for a proof of being here stamp. Not that straight forward as no postmaster. We waited a while and then asked the shop keeper to date stamp our books, she agreed even though she hadn t been trained and it was only later that we realised the date was a week earlier. Not much post office business takes places here then. So ten minutes later we were on our way to the first climb of the day up onto the tops and into the fly infested field hedges, not a place for a picnic but David wouldn t let us stop so soon anyway. We soon entered the woods, always welcome on a long walk and soon we were making our way down the hill towards the pigs farms, more flies and smell and a path made of sand just like the seaside. We soon left this all behind to enter the village of Ganton and our first stop in the churchyard. Bathed in sunshine and out of the wind we felt like staying all day but not to be we have more hills to climb so upwards & onwards. Today no-one had forgotten anything so just to make it interesting I decided to lose my flask, it must have been on this section as I swallowed a fly not a small fly but a great big hawthorn fly well I will not go into detail about what happened next but I did take a drink from my flask so I must have had it at this stage but not when we stopped for our next break so if anyone is passing this stretch in the future and finds a shining silver flask it is mine. May It is a good job the end is in sight, a steady walk down the hill to Muston and we met lots of people out walking we must be near civilisation. We reach the village, the last one on our trail and would you believe it there is a pub right in the middle. Well we do need a drink. On leaving the pub we head across the fields for the last time and into Filey, the worst part of the walk was through the back streets but once we crossed the ravine it was pleasant again with lots of trees before we reached the cliff tops and the end. We had a photo shoot at the official start/ end monument and turn down the hill feeling slightly deflated to be finished. A pub meal was called for to lift the spirits where to next? 14 Jullie brieven BDWF bij de Wandel 4 Daagse van Alkmaar, Noord Holland (Deel 1) Dit is het vijfde jaar dat de wandeltocht gehouden wordt in deze historische stad in Noord- Holland, ten noorden van Amsterdam! Ik was uitgenodigd door mijn Caroline Kok, een BDWF lid die ik voor het eerst ontmoette tijdens de Nijmeegse Vierdaagse jarem geleden. Maar Caroline was niet van plan te wandelen. Dit liet zij op tijd weten. Ik zou gaan wandelen met Hans, haar vader. Deze wandeltocht is niet herzelfde als Nijmegen, zoals ik zal vertellen! In het eerste jaar liepen er een paarhonderd mensen mee, nu ongeveer 8,000. We wandelen van woensdag tot en met zondag, met een keuze uit 45, 35, 25km voor ons, 15 en 8.5km, goed georganiseerd, zoals je verwacht van Nederlanders, maar zonder het porachtige festival, geen groot publiek en niet in de vakantieperiode. Dus ik ben er, wandelen naar het westen ag 1. Het is goed dat Hans, Henk (ook Hans wandelparner in Alkmaar) dezelfde leeftijd en hetzelfde wandeltempo hebben! De distinctivie toute brengt ons naar een hotel voor het eerste controlepunt. We passeren een groep zangers, een gaan hierna terug naar het strand en weer terug richting het strand, langs ze zee, acht km lang de Noordzee kust en terug via de zandduinen en bomen. Dag 2 anders dan in Nijmegen: elke dag een ander startpunt. Het regende hard toen wij naar het van het noorden van Alkmaar richting de polder gingen bekend als `thousand islands, te herkennen aan, sloten en kanalen in alle richtingen. Dus overall water de hele dag. Een hoogtepunt die dag was lunchen in een uniek bewaard veilinghuis. Veel houten gebouwen die boven het water gebouwd waren. In de tijd van de oude boeren bouwde de boeren hun huis dicht bij het water voor hun groente, fruit en granen voor henzelf en de verkoop. Zo verdienden zij de kost. Weer een nieuwe startplaats dag 3, Het alkmaarse voetbalstadion, waar AZ speelt. Voetbalfans zullen weten. Wij wandelde naar het zuiden in warm winderig weer, door de open velden van Heilo, bekend om zijn prachtige kerk met heilig water ( t putje), dat een genezende werking heeft. 15 Jullie brieven (Vervolg) De BDWF vertegenwoordiging was verdubbeld toen Caroline erbij kwam op zaterdag. Vanaf de start liepen wij langs de kanalen van de oude stad voor we naar het noorden gingen, weer in de stromende regen. Weer terug in een open gebied langs een schilderachtig Noord Hollands kanaal, kwam een sterke wind ons tegemoet. Dit kanaal is gemaakt in 1820s om Amsterdam en Den Helder en de Noordzee te verbinden. Alle routes kwamen samen in de oude centrum van de stad en de finish was op het Waagplein in Altmaar, bekend van de Edammer en Goudse kaasmarkten. Ik heb weer een nieuw gebied in Nederland leren kennen en was erg blij met gezelschap van Marianne en Hans Kok en hun familie en om hun omgeving te zien en het meest indrukwekkende was hun gastvrijheid. De wandeling was ook goed, zeker aan te bevelen als optie naast Nijmegen. Heel erg bedankt voor de uitnodiging Caroline! John Nicholson Juni 2011 PS: geen wandelgroep in zicht! 16 Jullie brieven (Vervolg) Wandel 4 Daagse, Alkmaar, Noord Holland (Part 2) Het was 6.45 uur toen wij (John, mijn vader en ik) mijn huis in Zaandam verlieten in schemerlicht, op onze weg naar Alkmaar. Het leek of iemand a het water dat hij kon vinden uit de luch liet vallen, maar we zaten toch in de auto maar het werd beter toen wij arriveerden bij de start in Alkmaar voor de laatste wandeldag. Toen Katrina & the Waves: Walking on sunshine zongen, werd het droog. Nou voor korte tijd... Zoals in Nijmegen wandelden we eerst in de stad en de rest van de tocht maakten draaiorgels gezellige muziek. We verlieten de stad voor stormachtige open velden. Dat maakte de buien kort maar ook een kleurrijke lijn van wandelaars met hun kleurrijke regenkleding. Het was verbazingwekkend wat mensen deden om hun voeten droog te houden. Van tape tot plastic zakken. Ik droeg een Union Jack die ik gekregen had van John in mijn rugzak en heel veel menzen zeiden mijn in het Engels gedag terwijl John in zijn beste Nederlands probeerde de praten. Het weer werd beter en wij hoopten genoeg regen voor die dag gehad te hebben. Maar toen wij door recreatiegebied Geestmerambacht liepen, startte het opnieuw en dit keer hard. Mijn regenkleding zat in mijn tas maar voor ik het eruit had was ik zeiknat. Op het einde van Geestmerambacht was er een restauranbtje waar wij gerust hebben. Tijd voor koffie thee en appeltaart. Toen wij weer vertrokken was het droog en dat bleef zo. In Koedijk hadden mensen hun straten versierd met smiley's and vanes, kinderen stonden langs de kant met snoep etc. de eerste overeenkomst met Nijmegen. Het laatste deel liepen wij langs het Noordhollands kanaal, in een rechte lijn tegen de wind in. Veel petten die door de organisatie uitgedeeld warden, vlogen af. Zoals in Nijmegen zie je de toren van de finish ver van te voren, maar voor die tijd loop je in een cirkel naar stad. We wandelde langs een oude stadsmuur, langs " `Windmolen van Piet` Vroeger waren er veel windmolens in de stad, nu nog maar één. Alle wandelaars kregen een zonnebloem, de lkucht wordt blauw en de zon geeft de wandelaars een zomers gevoel. De laatste km was er een rood tapijt voor wandelaars. We liepen naar "De Waag" een oud gebouw waar nog steeds elke ochtend kaas wordt gewogen en verkocht. De enige plaats in Nederland waar het op de oude manier gaat. In een van de cafés op het `De Waagplein`drinken wij wat op de succesvolle wandeling. John, mijn vader en een vriend van mijn vader hebben de vierdaagse uitgelopen en ik 1 dag, maar had het liefst alle dagen gelopen. Voor John en de vriend van mijn vader, die ook in Nijmegen gaan lopen, was dit een goede training voor Nijmegen. Geen grote problemen, dus dat komt goed. Misschien volgend jaar weer en ik hoop dan meer dagen te kunnen wandelen. John het was goed je hier te hebben. Ik hoop dat je de wandeltocht leuk vond en success in Nijmegen. Ik denk dat het goed komt. Ik zal een Nederlandse vlag meenemen en appelstroop voor je sandwich en dat wordt het een makkie voor je.
