5 Jochem Otten, Head of Education DESIGNING A NEW WORLD De mens is in staat zijn leefomgeving aan te passen aan de behoeftes en wensen van de tijd. Dat levert resultaten op van decadent tot maatschappelijk zeer relevant, van betreurenswaardig tot zeer smaakvol. We zijn niet overgeleverd aan het lot, maar hebben invloed op mogelijke toekomstscenario s. En daar gaat de studie aan Design Academy Eindhoven over. Design gaat naast tastbare producten ook over zaken als de organisatie van zorg of de routing op Schiphol. Ontwerpen is niet louter een esthetische vaardigheid. Integendeel, een ontwerper gaat op zoek naar het juiste concept binnen een context. Dat betekent goed kijken wat er om je heen gebeurt. Wat leert dat je? Wat zegt je hoofd, je hart en je intuïtie? Kun je middels een andere benadering of experiment tot een vernieuwende oplossing komen? Studeren aan Design Academy Eindhoven betekent je handen uit de mouwen steken, een eigen aanpak ontwikkelen en onderzoeken waar je kracht ligt. De academie zal je begeleiden en uitdagen om dat talent verder uit te bouwen en jezelf te ontwikkelen tot een authentiek professioneel ontwerper. Dit magazine neemt je mee op een soort wandeling door ons onderwijs; van de toelating tot het afstuderen en de beroepsperspectieven. De wereld om ons heen is voortdurend in beweging en in verandering. Het is cruciaal om als ontwerper adequaat te anticiperen, reageren, protesteren of soms zelf veranderingen te initiëren. Design Academy Eindhoven is daarom als opleiding altijd in ontwikkeling. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid is de studie alweer een stap verder in haar evolutie wanneer jij de studie start. Die voortrekkersrol en kwaliteit van het onderwijs zijn niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Design Academy Eindhoven heeft de afgelopen decennia toonaangevende ontwerpers voortgebracht zoals Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius, Maarten Baas en Job Smeets. De academie wordt gezien als één van de meest toonaangevende designinstituten ter wereld. Tijdens de opening van Graduation Show 2008 maakte toenmalig minister Plasterk bekend dat Design Academy Eindhoven een miljoen euro per jaar extra zal ontvangen voor een periode van vier jaar, ter ondersteuning van het verder uitbouwen van haar internationale excellentie. We zijn als academie blij met deze erkenning. Maar we kunnen niet vaak genoeg benadrukken dat we een normale HBOinstelling zijn, met recht op studiefinanciering en waar je met een diploma HAVO/VWO of MBO-4 toelating kunt doen. Dus laat je niet weerhouden, maar geef jezelf juist de kans een plek te verwerven op onze bijzondere school, als je het gevoel hebt dat dit jouw toekomst is. Het is een fantastische plek, een soort eiland, waar studenten uit (momenteel) 62 verschillende landen bijeenkomen om vorm te geven aan stukjes van een nieuwe wereld. Man is able to adjust his environment to the needs and wishes of a certain time. This ability results in various outcomes, ranging from decadent to socially extremely relevant and from unfortunate to very tasteful. Our fate is not in the hands of destiny, we ourselves can affect possible scenarios for the future. And this is exactly what studying at Design Academy Eindhoven is all about. Design does not just involve tangible matters. It also tackles issues such as the organization of health care or the routing at Schiphol Airport. Design is not merely a matter of aesthetics. On the contrary. A designer searches for the right concept within a given context. This implies keeping a close eye on what happens around you. What does it teach you? What do your head, heart and intuition tell you? Can you use a different approach or an experiment to reach a revolutionary solution? Studying at Design Academy Eindhoven means getting some hard work done, developing your own methods, finding out where your strength lies. The academy will guide you through this process and challenge you to build on your talents and develop your personality until you are an authentic and professional designer. This magazine takes you along on a journey through our academy; from application to graduation and job perspectives. The world around us is always moving, always in flux. It is crucial for a designer to anticipate adequately, to respond, to protest, and sometimes to initiate change. This is why Design Academy Eindhoven is always progressing. In all probability, the school will have taken yet another step in its evolution when you start your studies here. This pioneering role and the quality of the education offered at the academy have not gone unnoticed. Over the last decades, Design Academy Eindhoven has brought forth leading designers such as Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius, Maarten Baas and Job Smeets. The academy is considered one of the most prominent design institutes in the world. At the opening of the Graduation Show 2008, the then Minister Plasterk announced that Design Academy Eindhoven was to receive an additional million Euros per year for the next four years. The funds are intended for the further elaboration of the international excellence of our academy. The academy is grateful for the recognition. But we can never stop emphasizing that we are a normal educational institute, where students are entitled to a scholarship and where you can apply with a Dutch HAVO, VWO or MBO-4-diploma or a foreign equivalent. So do not let anything stop you, and take this chance to earn your spot in this special school, if you believe your future lies here. It is a truly great place, almost like an island, where students from currently 62 different countries come together to design small pieces of a new world.

8 008 study program Jaar 1 (propedeuse) Het eerste jaar is een algemeen vormend basisjaar. Je weekindeling ziet er als volgt uit: Maandag of dinsdag Introductielessen van de acht ontwerpafdelingen (zie pagina 14). Woensdag Vakken als kunstgeschiedenis en Engels. Ook is er een speciaal programma met lezingen en workshops (White Lady s program), afgestemd op de lopende projecten. Donderdag en vrijdag Vakken uit de vier Kompasrichtingen (zie pagina 12), bijvoorbeeld schilderen, vormonderzoek, textiel, (re)search, schrijven, technisch tekenen, materiaalstudies, vormentaal en theater. Aan het einde van dit jaar kies je één van de acht ontwerpafdelingen. 1st year (propaedeuse) The first year is a general foundation for the further years of your education. Mondays or Tuesdays Introductory classes on the eight main subjects (see pages 14). Wednesdays Subjects such as art history and English. The academy also has a special program with lectures and workshops (White Lady s program), is set up around current projects. Thursdays and Fridays Classes in the four Compass directions (see pages 12), for example painting, 2D and 3D studies, tactility, philosophy, writing, technical drawing, material studies, the language of forms, and theatre. Na je stage studeer je af in de door jou gekozen ontwerpafdeling. 4th year The first half of this year consists of an internship. After successfully completing your internship, you will graduate in the design direction of your choice. Veel lessen op de academie worden in het Engels gegeven. Daarom is het belangrijk dat je het Engels goed beheerst (mondeling en schriftelijk). Studenten die het Engels onvoldoende beheersen, zijn verplicht in de propedeuse het vak Engels te volgen. Aan het begin van het eerste studiejaar wordt bij elke student de beheersing van het Engels getest. Many classes at the academy are taught in English. That is why it is vital for you to be fluent in English, both orally and in writing. Students with insufficient knowledge of the English language are obliged to choose it as a subject in their first year. Each student s knowledge of the English language will be tested at the beginning of the first year.

Aan het einde van dit jaar kies je er één. The Kompas departments (outer layer) are attended by all first and second year students. During the third year students will specialise in one of these departments. The inner layer displays the eight design departments. 12 012 COMPASS Het Kompas is in het Bacheloronderwijs het basisprogramma voor iedere student. Het programma is opgezet rondom de acht ontwerpafdelingen en omvat de vier windrichtingen Atelier, Forum, Lab en Markt. Ze bekijken ieder vanuit een ander perspectief de rol van de ontwerper en de betekenis van design in de maatschappij. Met verschillende accenten en oriëntaties vormen ze een basis van kennis en kunde, een voedingsbodem van waaruit de toekomstige ontwerper zijn of haar talent kan blijven ontwikkelen. De verschillende karakteristieke aandachtsgebieden en doelstellingen van de vier Kompasrichtingen vormen samen het volledige beroepskader. Het Kompas richt zich niet zozeer op het ontwerpproces zèlf, maar meer op de daartoe benodigde kennis, vaardigheden en inzichten. Het is bovendien gebaseerd op een wijze van aanpak, een attitude. In de eerste twee studiejaren volgt iedere student een verplicht programma. In het derde studiejaar specialiseer je je in één van de vier richtingen. atelier forum Binnen Atelier staat het leren om handelend te denken centraal. Atelier vraagt studenten stil te staan bij hun proces en ontwikkeling en zich bewust te worden van hun intuïtie, eigenheid en authenticiteit. Door het leren kennen van hun persoonlijke kwaliteiten en het ontwikkelen van hun intuïtie kunnen beiden als kracht worden ingezet in het werkproces. Vanuit het individuele perspectief van iedere student ontstaat een proces van verwondering. Dit proces concentreert zich, vanuit de observatie, op het maken, het werken met de handen en het inzetten van de sensitiviteit in een zoektocht naar nieuwe betekenissen van materiaal, vorm, vaardigheden en context. Within Atelier our focus is on learning to think on your feet. Atelier asks students to give more thought to their process and development, and to develop an awareness of their intuition, uniqueness, and authenticity. By getting to know their personal qualities and developing their intuition, students can start using them as a force in their work process. This will set off a process of wonderment from the individual perspective of each student. A process which, starting out from observation, centres on creating, working with your hands and using your sensitivity in a search for new meanings of material, form, skills, and context. HEAD: BERNARDINE WALRECHT Forum is de Kompasrichting waar design en het ontwerpvak in een cultuurmaatschappelijke context worden geplaatst. Welke culturele en maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen zijn van invloed op wat ontwerpers maken en doen? Forum zorgt ervoor dat ontwerpers hun vak kunnen uitvoeren met begrip voor context en vanuit een benadering van onderzoek en reflectie. Forum beschouwt het als haar kernopgave om de tijd waarin we leven te begrijpen en te duiden; om van daaruit te komen tot een positiebepaling van design en de rol van de ontwerper in cultuur en samenleving. Een Forumstudent houdt zich in hoofdzaak bezig met het begeleiden van processen, het opzetten van strategieën of het schrijven van scenario s en minder met het daadwerkelijk ontwerpen van een product. Hij heeft een ruim werkveld en is inzetbaar op alle plaatsen waar creatief denken een rol speelt. Forum is the Compass direction which places design and the profession of designing in a cultural and social context. Which social and cultural developments have an impact on the things designers make and do? Forum enables designers to carry out their profession with an understanding of context and teaches them to base their approach on research and reflection. Forum considers it its most important task to understand and explain the times we live in; to determine the position of design and the role of the designer in our culture and society. Forum students mostly tend to work in process guidance, strategy development and scenario writing rather than actually designing products. They work in a very extensive field and can be of use wherever a creative mind is needed. HEAD: NICOLINE DORSMAN

13 In the Bachelor department, the Compass serves as every student s basic program. It has been set up around the eight design departments and contains the four directions Atelier, Forum, Lab and Market. Each of these directions takes into consideration the designer and the meaning of design in society from its own perspective. Boasting different accents and orientations, they form a basic well of knowledge and skills, a breeding ground allowing the future designer to constantly develop his or her talent. Together, the range of different focuses and goals of the four Compass directions provide a complete professional framework. The Compass is not centred on the design process itself, but rather on the knowledge, skills and insights needed in the process. Moreover, it is based on an approach, an attitude. During the first two years at the academy, students will attend a compulsory program. In the third year, students will specialize and choose one of the four directions. lab market Lab is het laboratorium van de academie. Hier wordt methodisch onderzoek gedaan en in de diepte geëxperimenteerd. Studenten leren abstract te denken en werken analytisch. Ze experimenteren vanuit een persoonlijke onderzoeksmethode die wetenschappelijk of intuïtief is, maar altijd wordt vastgelegd om opnieuw te kunnen worden toegepast. Bij Lab worden nieuwe materialen en technieken beproefd, technologie wordt van haar mystiek ontdaan. Labstudenten houden ervan grenzen te verleggen en verder te kijken dan het bekende. De focus van Lab ligt bij de interactie tussen maker, product en gebruiker. Lab is the academy s laboratory. This is where students conduct their methodical research and where they can perform in-depth experiments. Lab teaches students abstract thinking and encourages an analytical approach. Students perform experiments using their personal research method, which can be scientific as well as intuitive, but which is always recorded to ensure it can be reapplied. They test new materials and techniques; technology is stripped of its mystique. Lab students enjoy pushing the limits and looking beyond the familiar. The focus in Lab is on the interaction between the maker, the product and the user. temporary HEAD: BERNARDINE WALRECHT Markt is de richting voor de ondernemend ontwerper. Hier ligt de focus op de nieuwe markt-eisen van de 21e eeuw: transparantie, gezondheid, verbondenheid, zinvolheid, duurzaamheid, eerlijkheid, kwaliteit en originaliteit. Binnen Markt wordt de student in staat gesteld zijn persoonlijke talent te ontwikkelen tot een bedrijfsmatige inhoud. Met andere woorden: Waar ben je goed in en wat heb je straks te bieden? Leren om vanuit zelfvertrouwen te presenteren, het weten wat je ontwerp waard is, kunnen uitleggen waarom een investering in je idee zinvol is, het ontdekken van een globaliserende wereld en wat dat betekent bijvoorbeeld voor productie. Het komt allemaal aan bod in Markt. Studenten met de specialisatie Markt verhouden zich economischer en ondernemender tot het designvak. Ze zijn naar buiten gericht en hebben oog voor de wensen en verlangens van mensen of voor de markt in meer algemene zin. Ze zijn relatief makkelijk in staat een verbinding te leggen tussen opdrachtgevers en hun eigen professionele identiteit en weten hierdoor een eigen positie te bepalen in relatie tot de markt. Market is the department for the entrepreneurial designer. The focus here is on the new demands in 21st century markets: transparency, health, connectivity, meaningfulness, sustainability, honesty, quality, and originality. Within Market we enable students to develop their personal talent into a professional content. In other words: what are you good at, and what will you have to offer when you finish here? Learning to make confident presentations, knowing what your design is worth, being able to explain why investing in your idea is worthwhile, exploring the globalising world and the significance this has for things such as production. All these aspects are tackled during Market classes. Students specialising in Market will have a more economic and entrepreneurial approach to the design profession. They will be outgoing and will have a keen eye for people s needs and desires or the demands in the market in a more general sense. They are relatively quick at establishing relationships between commissioners and their own professional identity, which allows them to determine their own position in relation to the markets. 15 Na het eerste jaar aan Design Academy Eindhoven kies je één van de acht ontwerpafdelingen. Aan het hoofd van iedere afdeling staat een ontwerper of kunstenaar met een internationale reputatie. In de ontwerpmodules van deze afdelingen kom je als student voor reële ontwerpvraagstukken te staan. Dit is de proef op de som: ben je in staat verbanden te leggen tussen de verworven kennis, vaardigheden en inzichten uit de Kompasrichtingen en kun je die ook adequaat toepassen bij de totstandkoming van een professioneel ontwerp? De docententeams van de ontwerpafdelingen begeleiden je daarin en stimuleren de ontwikkeling van een persoonlijke ontwerpmethodiek. Uiteindelijk studeer je af in één van de acht ontwerpafdelingen. Je krijgt je lessen van professionele ontwerpers uit binnenen buitenland. Zij geven maximaal één dag per week les en staan verder volop in de praktijk van het ontwerpersvak. Zo staan zij garant voor een continue en actuele verbinding tussen de realiteit in het beroepsveld en de lessen. De namen van de acht ontwerpafdelingen verwijzen naar de context van waaruit deze afdelingen ontwerpvraagstukken benaderen. De mens verlangt van elk product of dienst andere eigenschappen in een andere context. Denk aan een stoel in de openbare ruimte in de vrije tijd of gebruik in een arbeidssituatie. De ontwerpafdelingen hebben echter gemeen dat zij allen de mens centraal stellen. Op de volgende pagina s vind je een korte schets van de acht afdelingen. LEISURE COMMUNICATION MOBILITY IDENTITY?? WELL BEING PUBLIC SPACE ACTIVITY LIVING After your first year at Design Academy Eindhoven, you will choose one of the eight design departments. Each department is headed by a designer or artist of international repute. The design modules of the departments confront you, the student, with realistic design issues. This is the ultimate test: are you capable of making the connection between the knowledge, skills and insights you obtained from the Compass directions, and are you able to adequately put them into practice when creating a professional design? The teaching teams of the design departments will guide you through this process and will stimulate the development of your personal designing method. Eventually, you will graduate in one of the eight design departments. Classes are taught by professional designers from the Netherlands and abroad. They only teach one day a week, and spend the rest of their workweek in the everyday practice of the design industry. A balance which guarantees a continuous and up-to-date connection between design reality and your classes. The names of the eight design departments refer to the context from which these departments consider designing issues. People demand different qualities from products and services in different contexts. Think of a chair in a public space in people s spare time, or a chair in a work situation. The thing the design departments share, however, is that the central focus is always mankind. In the following paragraphs, you will find a short explanation on each of the design departments.

16 016 man and leisure Hoe geven wij vorm en betekenis aan onze meest eigen tijd? Kan dat beter, boeiender, schoner, mooier, zinvoller? De afdeling Man and Leisure kijkt met een onbevangen, nieuwsgierige blik naar de (vrije-) tijdsbesteding van mensen. Als Leisure-student ben je je bewust van de veranderende wereld om je heen en zie je jouw toekomstige rol als ontwerper daarin. Je hebt oog voor product en service, maar ook voor complete systemen. Door bestaande vanzelfsprekendheden te analyseren, kun je nieuwe creëren. Elk semester staat een ander thema centraal, dat proefondervindelijk onderzocht wordt. Want om oplossingen te bedenken, moet je eerst de problemen en hun onderlinge samenhang doorgronden. How do we fill in and give meaning to our most personal time? Could we do it better, cleaner, more interestingly, more beautifully, more sensibly? Our Man and Leisure department takes an unprejudiced and interested look into people s leisure time. As a Leisure student, you are well aware of the changing world around you and your future role in it as a designer. You have a sense of product and service, as well as of complete systems. By analysing the things people take for granted, you are able to create new patterns. Every semester will deal with a new theme, which we will look into by trial-and-error. Because in order to find solutions, you must start by understanding the problems and the way they relate to each other. head: Irene Droogleever Fortuyn Alumni: Ingrid Brandth, Maarten Kolk, Simone Kroon, David Luxembourg DUTCH HOMEGROWN EEFJE SANDMANN De muskusrat wordt in Nederland met man en macht bestreden. Eefje Sandmann ziet mogelijkheden voor ecologisch bont: de dieren worden sowieso gedood, gebruik van hun pels zou nertsen kunnen sparen. Ze verwerkte het bont van vier gelooide muskusratten tot een paar warme wanten. The Netherlands is fighting the muskrat with all its might. Eefje Sandmann has spotted opportunities for eco-friendly fur: the animals are killed anyway, and using their fur could save thousands of mink lives. She has used the fur from four tanned muskrats to create a pair of warm mittens.

17 man and communication Het programma van de afdeling Man and Communication is erop gericht studenten een brede, allesomvattende deskundigheid in de visuele communicatie te helpen ontwikkelen. Je wordt uitgedaagd om visuele communicatie niet alleen te gebruiken om te communiceren, maar ook om een persoonlijke, sociale en/of culturele identiteit te ontwikkelen. De opleiding confronteert je met het multidisciplinaire en steeds veranderende karakter van hedendaagse communicatie. Je maakt in deze richting kennis met 2D en 3D design, grafisch ontwerp, illustratie, bewegend beeld en nieuwe media. Daarnaast worden er bijzondere verbindingen gemaakt met bijvoorbeeld culturele antropologie of zelfs performance, die je helpen bij het ontwikkelen van nieuwe manieren om informatie op een doelmatige en prikkelende manier toe te passen, te organiseren, te verpakken en over te brengen. In ieder project staan inhoud en boodschap centraal en de vraag: wat communiceert het? blijft tijdens de hele studie terugkeren. Afgestudeerden van deze afdeling werken meestal op het terrein van grafische vormgeving, reclame, webdesign, illustratie, animatie en zelfs de gamesindustrie of ze werken als autonome creatievelingen met functieomschrijvingen die nog niet eens zijn uitgevonden. BINNENSKAMERS TIM ENTHOVEN Het leven van Tim is niet veel groter dan zijn kamer. Die vier muren vormen de begrenzing waarbinnen hij zoveel mogelijk overzicht probeert te creëren. In de 96 pagina s tellende graphic novel Binnenskamers gaat hij voorbij aan strip- en romanconventies. Een ontroerend, vervreemdend boek in een vrije beeldtaal over het leven van een bange jongen. Tim s life hardly extends beyond his room. Its four walls form the boundaries within which he tries to create as much of a perspective as he can. In the 96-page graphic novel Binnenskamers Tim leaves all conventions in comic books or novels behind him to create a touching, surrealistic book about the life of a frightened boy in his own liberated imagery. The Man and Communication program is designed to provide students with a broad and holistic literacy in visual communication. Participants are encouraged to employ visual communication as a mode of discourse and a means of developing a personal, social and/or cultural identity. The course reflects the multidisciplinary and ever-changing nature of contemporary communications by covering 2D + 3D design, graphic design, illustration, moving-image and new media. In addition, there are left-field excursions into cultural anthropology and even performance to stimulate new and innovative ways in which information can be effectively and imaginatively applied, organized, packaged and distributed. The pivotal concern in all projects is content and messaging: What s it saying? is the most commonly used phrase in the department. 18 018 man and mobility De afdeling Man and Mobility bestudeert creatieve oplossingen voor producten en services die te maken hebben met de mobiliteit van mensen goederen en data. Je onderzoekt de opportuniteiten die door onze mobiele samenleving, en de huidige en toekomstige stand van de techniek, kunnen worden gerealiseerd. Mobiliteit is jouw inspiratiebron om vernieuwende concepten voor mensen te bedenken. Als student Man and Mobility krijg je prikkelende opdrachten die je oneindig veel mogelijkheden geven tot het ontwikkelen van vernieuwende mobiliteitsconcepten. Recente opdrachten in dit verband waren: het unpluggen van elektrische apparaten of creatief omgaan met verticale mobiliteit. Anderzijds wordt er ook zeer concreet samengewerkt met bedrijven zoals Air France/KLM om nieuwe on-board services of toekomstige luchthavenconcepten te bedenken. Of met het Catharina ziekenhuis in Eindhoven om noodzakelijke mobiliteitsstructuren te bekijken. Je begrijpt de taal van de industrie, zowel op technisch als op commercieel vlak en communiceert zoals de industrie. Je begrijpt materialen en productietechnieken en je zoekt voortdurend de juiste balans op tussen emotie en ratio. The Man and Mobility department studies creative solutions for products and services related to the mobility of people, goods, and data. You will conduct research into the opportunities that can be realised thanks to our mobile society and the current and future state of technology. Mobility is your source of inspiration for creating innovative concepts for people. As a Man and Mobility student you will be faced with a range of stimulating assignments offering you endless possibilities to develop innovative mobility concepts. Recent assignments in this field have included: unplugging electrical appliances or creative ideas for vertical mobility. On the other hand, the department also closely collaborates with businesses such as Air France/KLM to set up new on-board services or concepts for the airport of the future, or with the Catharina hospital in Eindhoven in order to scrutinise its essential mobility structures. You understand the language of the industry, both on a technical and a commercial level, and are able to communicate as the industry does. Ultrasphere is een wasmachine die zo compact van formaat is dat je hem overal mee naar toe kan nemen. Je plaatst hem in een waterdichte tas samen met je vuile was. Ultrasphere gebruikt vervolgens ultrageluid om miljoenen luchtbelletjes in het water te creëren waardoor het vuil opgelost wordt. In the future we will be more mobile than ever before and the appliances we use to make our lives more comfortable will have to be equally adaptable. Ultrasphere is a washing machine that is so compact in size that it can be taken anywhere. Place it an a watertight bag with your dirty linens. Ultrasphere then uses ultrasound to create millions of tiny air bubbles in the water that will dissolve any stains.??

19 man and identity Als Identity-student heb je voelsprieten voor alles wat er broeit onder de oppervlakte van het dagelijks leven. Je bent nieuwsgierig naar al het nieuwe om je heen en voelt goed aan welke invloeden de smaak en stijl van morgen zullen beïnvloeden. Je kunt voorvoelen hoe mensen in de toekomst willen leven en bedenken welke vormen en materialen daarbij van belang zijn. Van nature bezit jij eigentijdsheid, eigenheid en eigenzinnigheid. Waar kom je als student in deze richting terecht? Bijvoorbeeld in de fase waarin merkstrategieën ontwikkeld worden, beeld en stemming van collecties en producten worden bepaald. Als trendvoorspeller inspireer en voed je andere ontwerpers en producenten op het gebied van mode en interieur. Ook kun je als ontwerper mode- en interieurcollecties vormgeven op gebied van kleur, materialen, dessins en accessoires. Tot slot werken Identityontwerpers in het laatste stadium van ontwerpen, daar waar het product image krijgt. Styling, fotografie, film en visual merchandising zijn de meest bekende vakgebieden als je deze richting kiest. ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS NIEK PULLES Functionele, decoratieve panelen voor publieke ruimten. Niek Pulles liet zich inspireren door de geluiddempende functie van klassieke wandtapijten en de vorm van klassieke (deur) omlijstingen in oude herenhuizen. Zijn panelen zijn gemaakt van pyramide foam, een materiaal dat geluid absorbeert. In Architectural Acoustics vormde hij ze tot industriële patronen die samen een wand kunnen bekleden. As an Identity student you possess antennae for signs of activity beneath the surface of everyday life. You are curious about the newness in the world around you, and you learn to spot those influences that will affect impact the tastes and styles of tomorrow. You can sense the way people will want to live in the future and you are able to visualise the shapes and materials needed to achieve it. You have a natural feel for what is in, what is unique and what is outrageous. Where will you, the Man and Identity student, end up as a professional? You will for example become involved in projects at the outset, helping to develop brand strategies and to determine image, style and mood. As a trend forecaster, you will inspire and support other designers and manufacturers in the fields of fashion and interiors. Special areas of interest are colours, materials, patterns and accessories. In the final stages of the design process, Man and Identity designers help craft the image of a product. Niek Pulles has drawn inspiration from the noisereducing function of classical tapestries and the shape of classical (door)frames in old mansions. His panels are made of pyramid foam, a material that will absorb sound. With Architectural Acoustics he has shaped them into industrial patterns that can combine to cover a wall.

20 020 man and well being Hoe zijn we verbonden met onze omgeving? Hoe geven we betekenis aan de dingen, ruimten en diensten die we gebruiken? Man and Well Being legt de link tussen de vorm en onze ervaring van de wereld om ons heen, op wat voor manier dan ook. Als student in deze richting houd je het hoofd koel, maar heb je ook een warm hart. Je mantra is vorm volgt voelen (form follows feeling). Door zo verfijnd mogelijk te ontwerpen, wil je het beste in de mens naar boven brengen. Daarvoor moet je begrijpen hoe een mens dingen ervaart, van proeven tot voelen, van poëzie tot technologie. De afgelopen jaren is er gewerkt aan projecten met betrekking tot water, vloeren, kleuren en bloemen. Productontwerp in deze en andere gebieden heeft te maken met sociaal bewustzijn en relaties tussen mensen. Ook helpt het ons stil te staan bij de waarde van natuurlijke bronnen. Spreekt deze richting je aan, dan zul je interesse hebben in de emotionele waarde van een product, de toepassingen ervan en het effect dat het op de gebruikers heeft. (Wat voelen zij? Is er interactie? Is er een emotioneel aspect aan het gebruik van dit product?) Minstens zo belangrijk in deze richting is een goed gevoel voor sfeer en detail. What connects us to our surroundings? What gives meaning to the things, spaces and services we use? Man and Well Being creates a link between form and our experience of the world around us in whichever shape. As a student in this department, you combine a cool head with a warm heart. Your mantra is form follows feeling. You want to reveal the best in human nature by refining design. This implies that you understand human experience varying from taste to tactility, from poetry to technology. Recent projects have touched on topics such as water awareness, flooring, the human sense of colour, and flowers. Product design in these and other areas relates to social awareness and human relations, and it will encourage us to reflect on sustainability and the value of natural resources. If this main subject appeals to you, you will be fascinated by the emotional value of a product, its applications and its impact on users (What do users feel? Is there an element of interaction? Is there an emotional aspect to using this product?). Voor jongere vruchtjes geldt dit niet. Om ouders van kinderen jonger dan 24 weken de gelegenheid te geven afscheid te nemen, maakte Brigitte Coremans Miscarriage Coffins, zes kistjes met verschillende afmetingen die refereren aan de ontwikkeling van een foetus tot de 24ste week. For stillborn foetuses after 24 or more weeks of pregnancy, there will be an official burial. But for younger embryos a burial is not available. In order to allow the parents of children stillborn before 24 weeks the opportunity of saying goodbye, Brigitte Coremans has created Miscarriage Coffins six little coffins in different sizes, referring to the development, of a foetus up until the 24th week.
