3 Introduction Dear Student, This independent study module has been designed especially for you! Through this module you will be able to practice and improve your English, in order to pass the exam. The Exam consists of 5 separate parts: presenting, conversation, writing, reading and Listening. In order to pass the exam, you need to be at a A2/B1 level (CEFR/ERK). The listening and reading exams will be at B1 level and the presenting, conversation and writing exams will be at A2 level. a short description of what is expected of you for every skill. Since you are studying to become a nurse, you will also need to be able to use english in your profession. This means we will not only focus on general english, but also on professional english. This way we hope you will be prepared to use english in your work when necessary. Pagina 2

4 Knowledge tests Before we get started with the lessons it is important that you find out what you already know and what you still need to practice. This will be done by taking several tests. Digital reading test (via TOA) Digital listening test (via TOA) Writing assignment Grammar test (in the Wiki) TOA is an organisation that develops tests and exams. The real exams for English will be from TOA as well, so this will give you an idea of what the exams will look like. For the reading and Listening test you will get login information from your teacher. 8 Lesson 1 Today the teacher will introduce him-or herself and will ask each of you to give a short introduction as well. after the introductions you can hand in the writing assignment, and you will receive the results from the reading and listening test that you've done on toets.nl. the rest of the lesson will be filled with the following topics: - grammar review - speaking assignment English skills - reading - listening English skills In the following assignments we will work with texts and fragments focused on English skills. Please go to the link below and read the text about bullying. answer the multiple choice questions that you can find below the text. discuss your answers with a classmate or the teacher. Speaking Assignment In order to assess your speaking abilities, the teacher needs to hear you speak English. Therefore you have to prepare and produce a speaking assignment. You need to record yourself while speaking English for at least 3 minutes. The following topics need to be mentioned: - Short introduction (name, age, etc) - Why do you want to become a nurse? - Where do you work now (which ward)? - Where have you worked before? - Where do you still want to work? - What are your plan for the future? (after graduation) If these topics don't make a recording of at least 3 minutes, then you need to add some information that you would like to share. When you've finished preparing this assignment you nee dto record yourself and either the recording or hand it in during the next lesson. We verwachten niet dat de situatie zal veranderen. De present continuous wordt gebruikt om aan te geven dat iets tijdelijk is. In het voorbeeld hiernaast verwachten we dat de situatie zal veranderen. They speak Portuguese in Brazil. Een algemene waarheid en permanent feit. past now future A: What language are they speaking? B: They re speaking Portuguese Het gebeurd op dit moment. Ik kan het horen. now Present Perfect Gebruik: Om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden gebeurd is en nu nog steeds bezig is. Of dat het net voor het moment van spreken afgelopen is. Het resultaat daarvan is nog merkbaar. Het tijdstip is onbekend of onbelangrijk. In Amerikaans-Engels wordt vaak de Past Simple gebruikt in plaats van de Present Perfect, vaak samen met yet of already: Amerikaans-Engels Did you eat (yet)? Did you finish (already)? Brits-Engels Have you eaten (yet)? Have you finished (already)? Past Tenses Past Simple Gebruik: Om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden is gebeurd en nu afgelopen is. Vaak komen tijdsaanduidingen als, yesterday, last week, a month ago, voor in de zin. Voorbeeld: Mary had read the book before she watched a film. Uitleg: Mary had een boek gelezen voordat ze een film keek. Het eerste deel van de zin met had read vindt plaats vóór het lezen van een boek. Dit lezen van het boek is ook in het verleden, het ed geeft dit aan (past simple). Nederlands: the a an Engels: de, het een een The: is een bepalend lidwoord en wordt gebruikt bij zowel meervoud als enkelvoud en is hetzelfde voor vrouwelijke en mannelijke woorden. Wordt vaak gebruikt wanneer er maar 1 van bestaat. The president of the United States. (the, want er is er maar 1 van) A: als het woord dat volgt begint met een medeklinkerklank (b, f, j, m, etc.) a book a university An: als het woord dat volgt begint met een klinkerklank (a, e, i, o, u) an orange an hour In de uitleg wordt het woord klank onderstreept. Dit komt omdat je bij het gebruik van a/an moet luisteren naar de klank waarmee het woord dat na a/an komt begint. Dus begint het met een klinkerklank of een medeklinkerklank: university begint met een u, een klinker, maar in de uitspraak hoor je eerst een j, dus moet er a voor. hour begint met een h, een medeklinker, maar in de uitspraak komt die h te vervallen en hoor je een ou-klank, dus moet er an voor. a/an gebruik je als je over een persoon of ding in het algemeen praat. I m looking for a job. (I don t have a specific job in mind) als je voor het eerst over een persoon of ding praat. There s a gentleman to see you. Pagina 12

14 als je wilt aangeven dat een persoon of ding één uit velen is. He s a director. (There are lots of directors, he s one of them. Mars is a planet in the solar system. (There are lots of planets in the solar system) als je wilt aangeven wat voor een baan iemand heeft. I m a teacher. He s an architect. the gebruik je als je over een specifiek persoon of ding spreekt. the job advertised in the paper. als je verwijst naar een persoon of ding die je al eerder hebt genoemd. It s the man I told you about earlier. om aan te geven dat een persoon of ding de enige is in de context. He s the director (There s only one director in this company) the earth goes around the sun (There is only one earth and only one sun) wanneer het duidelijk uit de context is op te maken over welke persoon of welk ding je spreekt. I ve come about the job. (It s a particular job) bij alle zelfstandig naamwoorden (enkelvoud, meervoud, ontelbaar) the gentleman, the men, the coffee Prepositions (voorzetsels) Voorzetsels Een voorzetsel is een woord waarmee je aangeeft waar iets is/staat/ligt, van wie iets is, in welke richting iets gaat etc. Hieronder vind je de belangrijkste verschillen tussen Engelse en Nederlandse voorzetsels. A. In = in/into They are in the swimming pool. They are jumping into the swimming pool. In geeft plaats aan en into geeft beweging aan. B. Boven = above/over This town is thirty feet above sea level. He lives over his shop. Above betekent hoger dan en over betekent rechtboven. C. Onder = below/under Holland lies below sea level. The dog lies under the table. Below betekent lager dan en under betekent rechtonder. D. Van = from/of We received your letter of 17 May. Pagina 13

15 Let s drink a glass of wine. Where do you come from? Of geeft bezit aan en from geeft een beweging of richting aan. E. Tussen= among/between We are here among all our friends from school. He was sitting between his father and mother. Among betekent tussen meer dan twee personen/dingen en between betekent tussen twee personen/dingen. F. Sinds=since/for I haven t been to Paris since I haven t been to Paris for 15 years. Sinds wordt vertaald met since als vanaf een bepaald tijdstip wordt bedoeld en met for als gedurende een bepaald tijdvak wordt bedoeld. G. Gedurende=for/during She has been here for two months. I did not see him during my visit to France. Gedurende wordt vertaald met for als een tijdvak wordt bedoeld (geeft antwoord op de vraag hoe lang?) en met during als het een tijdstip aangeeft (geeft antwoord op de vraag wanneer?). H. Op, per, met de= on/by Op, per, met de wordt vertaald met on als het bovenop betekent of om aan te geven dat je op een vervoermiddel reist en met by als je met een vervoermiddel reist. The pen is on the table. He went there on bike. You can go there on foot. We always go there by car. Why do you travel by plane? I. Op/om= at/on Op wordt vertaald met at als je aangeeft dat je op een bepaalde plaats of in een bepaald gebouw bent. Als het een tijdsbepaling is, gebruik je at bij een tijdstip en on bij een datum of dag. I ll meet you at the meeting point. You have to be here at ten o clock. (=wat het moet zijn) de woordvolgorde in engelse zinnen ziet er meestal als volgt uit: wie Doet Wat / Wie Waar wanneer onderwerp gezegde/ werkwoorden lijdend/ meewerkend voorwerp plaatsbepaling tijdsbepaling Billy went to his friend next door five minutes ago I drink a glass of soda at school every day een vaste regel is dat de plaats altijd voor de tijd staat, maar er is 1 uitzondering! woorden als: often, never, ever, sometimes, always, usually, normally, hardly, etc. komen NA - am, is, are, was, were = he is always late. TUSSEN - twee werkwoorden = he can never do that alone. VOOR - 1 werkwoord = he Always goes there by bike. Negative sentences Ontkenning in een engelse zin die ontkennend is staat een hulpwerkwoord of een vorm van TO DO. bijvoorbeeld: he can dance - he cannot (can't) dance you will see - you will not (won't) see she is ill - she is not (isn't) ill I walk to the beach - I do not (don't) walk to the beach he walks to the beach - he does not (doesn't) walk to the beach we walk to the beach - we do not (don't) walk to the beach she walked to the beach - she did not (didn't) walk to the beach they walked to the beach - they did not (didn't) walk to the beach Questions Vragen In het Engels kan een vraag beginnen met: een hulpwerkwoord (can, could, am, is, are, was, were, will, would, shall, have, must) een vorm van "to do" (do, does, did) een vraagwoord (where, what, which, why, who, how, when). Als er een hulpwerkwoord in de zin staat, maak je de zin vragend door het hulpwerkwoord aan het Pagina 19

21 begin van de zin te zetten: He can dance - Can he dance? You will see - Will you see? I must go - Must I go? She is ill - Is she ill? They have seen it - Have they seen it? I shall go - Shall I go? Als er geen hulpwerkwoord in de zin staat, moet je gebruik maken van een vorm van het werkwoord to do. Je moet de vorm van to do aanpassen aan de persoon: I walk to the beach - Do I walk to the beach? He walks to the beach - Does he walk to the beach? We walk to the beach - Do we walk to the beach? Er verandert niets aan het hele werkwoord "to walk". De stam+s structuur is dus alleen van toepassing op to do. Je moet de vorm van to do ook aanpassen aan de tijd: She walked to the beach - Did she walk to the beach? They walked to the beach - Did they walk to the beach? Er verandert niets aan het hele werkwoord "to walk". Je zet alleen to do in de verleden tijd. Bij vragen die met een vraagwoord beginnen, is de opbouw van de zin hetzelfde als bij de eerste twee gevallen, maar dan voorafgegaan door een vraagwoord: He went to England - Where did he go? She is his wife - Who is she? He will arrive at noon - When will he arrive? She is reading a book - What is she reading?
